- This episode I have another vintage digital watch repair and a bit of an iconic digital watch amongst collectors. This is my Seiko Pan Pam M158-5000 World Timer. I bought it online without a description I could understand but knowing the watch was not running. Can I repair this one? well get a cup of tea and relax and watch me attempt this repair.

My father was a flight engineer with Pan Am for 29 years and he wore a Seiko M158-5000. He loved the watch and I loved to see him wear it. Thank you for bringing this precious memory back to folks like me and hopefully many others.

I believe it was named Pan Am because Pan Am gave all of their pilots the watch.

Don't often see digital watch restoration, this is more (micro) electronics repair than watch making, hats off to the stacked skill set.

I remember my dad getting this watch when I was a kid. Blew my mind!
The Seiko machine that you are using to check the accuracy is, in its root form, a frequency counter. It is measuring the frequency of the quartz crystal oscillator inside the watch. It is then comparing it to the ideal frequency (usually around 32 KHz, but it does vary), and then takes the variation between the ideal frequency and what the watch frequency, and calculates the daily variation from the ideal.
The heat you are feeling is probably from an ovenized crystal oven, which creates an extremely stable frequency that is the reference for comparison to the watch’s frequency. Crystals do change their frequency when exposed to temperature variations. Pitting the Seiko timing machine’s crystal reference in an oven reduces the variation significantly. Typically, a frequency counter with a regular crystal will have a variation of 1x10^-6 to 1X10^-7. An ovenized crystal will have a variation of 1 X10^-9 to 1x10^11.
How does it pick up the oscillator in the watch? Inductive?
The frequency of the crystal is 32,768 KHz
Yes it is an integer power of two. Flip flops always divide the frequency by two, so with this frequency you can eventually get an exact 1 Hz... (s^-1)@@allankristiansen8133
i wouldn't know the actual means through which it picks up the crystal oscillations, but the crystal sends out pulses of electricity, this creates a small electric field that's picked-up by the processor to clock itself, a bit like a piston in an engine, it uses the crystal to know it's up, and down states, either way that pulse of electricity is going to be at, or near a specific frequency, and you can pick-up the electromagnetic field from it using the base he put the watch on, so there's a coil in there, i guess it would be inductive, and from the pulses received from the coil, it can count what's happening in the watch... i think, anyway... kinda like how you can charge your phone, or toothbrush without electrical contact, same thing, but really small currents...
Took the words from my mouth. My grandfather founded a crystal oscillator factory. Today the supply OCXO to satellites. The temperature at which the oven heats to, brings the oscilator to a flat point on its cubic frequency response vs temperature graph, that itself is determined by the angle at which the grain is cut in the quartz.

'World Time' watches were in vogue in the 70's The Concorde started service in the 70s and it was the 'Jet Age'. I have a Caravelle (Bulova) world time watch with an AS movement. This is the first digit world time watch I've seen. Learned something today.

What a lovely watch.
I got the jitters watching you put those e-clips back though. I restored a Casio W-726 (buttons;gasket etc) and removing/replacing those clips, I was shaking.
Your Seiko tester is basically a frequency counter with a high precision crystal oven for temperature stability. Crystals do age over time , so it may not be as accurate as it was once was. The ovens usually have an adjustment port on them for the crystal adjustment if you have something to calibrate it against. It usually will tell you the frequency on the top of the oven. A nice piece of old equipment. Thank you for sharing it.

This is the first time I’ve used it properly as I’ve only had it a month.
I’m now electronically minded though but know it’s a good asset to have on the bench.

I have a witschi version and calibrated it using a cheap GPS receiver that outputs the 1 PPS signal derived from the atomic clock on board the satellites. Wiring the pps signal to a piezo sounder (optional - just to hear it) & wired in parallel to a rotor coil from a cheap quartz alarrm clock (for the tester to sense the drive pulses). Works a treat.
@wirdy1 The GPS satellites have their clocks to less than three nano seconds, or 3 billionth of a second. You can 0 beat your receiver to WWV on one of the even frequencies, like on 20 Mhz, or 10 or 15. It should give you a very accurate calibration. I am a ham radio operator and we have been doing this for years. Just an FYI, but I would like to know how to get the GPS. I just have not tried.

Astonishing how much mechanical gubbins was in this digital watch. I do love the Panaplex display in the Seiko Quartz tester it has to be said.
I had one of those watches, I absolutely loved it, I miss it terribly, and I've never wanted a watch, or a guitar or anything else, as much as much as I want that watch now I see it.

I enjoyed the digital repair of this watch! I have a Bulova Quartz from ( I think 1980) that needs repairing and looking at what needs to be done. I think my issue is a capacitor problem but not sure. Appreciated the troubleshooting you went through and was happy to see it work for you!
My gosh. As an American who discovered British panel shows several years ago when I was struggling with taking care of my parents with cancer..... They have been such a lifesaver for me to unwind and always get a good laugh. Everything here is always so serious and life or death..... We just don't have television like you all do over there!
I was literally just watching wilty and hignfy earlier this evening. And specifically remember perking up when I first heard the bit about Lee Mack being an apprentice watchmaker! I was an apprentice watchmaker for a few years right after high school, until I realized im not cut out for it.
So my ears really perked up at that wilty bit..... And that's so cool to know that he was your apprentice!
Now I specialize in metrology equipment and test gear evaluation, calibration, and repair.
And not too dissimilar from the circuitry found in digital watches. So I find that bit fascinating..... And would love the chance to characterize some of those components, and even decapsulate, x-ray, and reverse engineer some of the ic's and components.
Yes we have many great TV comedy shows. Not all Americans get our humour but some do. Actually plenty of Americans doing reactions to UK TV shows on here like King Boomer or After work reactions channels. Might give you inspiration to see more things you may have not known about.
Very interesting topic here. I've never watched a digital time piece restoration and found this to be very interesting. I enjoy watching tools and equipment of all shapes, sizes and purposes being used to diagnose and repair things.

Never seen that quartz tester, would be very interested to learn more about it. Those old quartz watches from 70s were really stylish and I admire your bravery in tackling such old electronics! I had a Casiotron on a mesh bracelet from 1978, from new, that I literally wore out after 15 years!

I would love to see more of your collection, I still have a early Seiko Kinetic watch that stopped working and probably needs a capacitor replacement.

This is the first vintage digital Seiko I have seen with the battery "screw out area" (whatever it is called) in quite good condition. As is the rest of this watch. 😊 Thank you for your restoration of this beauty.

Typical quartz watches do not compensate for temperature, so it is important to take note of the temperature at the moment that you are regulating it. Worn on the wrist, the watch will get warm from contact with your skin so it will be warmer than the ambient temperature of the room. That temperature is roughly 30ºC, while the temperature the watch will be stored at may be considerably less. If you like to have your watch be accurate when you need to grab it and go, you will consider its storage temperature and regulate it around that temperature. Even if you wore it every day, it still will be off overnight most likely, so somewhere between storage temperature and wearing temperature would be a good spot to shoot for. The Seiko Superior and others that had twin quartz oscillators did do some temperature compensation. Those watches can only be regulated with the QT-99 (good choice of machine Michael!) or QT-2100 or later quartz testers or by using an adapter, called QT-Adapter, which was made to use with the QT-77, QT-100, and QT-200 testers. Lots of modern quartz watches are not even adjustable so this whole subject of regulating is moot and a quartz tester just tells you the rate it is running at. You will find most of those movements run fast a few seconds per day. High end quartz movements are thermally compensating and accurate to within seconds per year or month. Most (all?) vintage Seiko quartz movements had trimmer capacitors for regulating them, but the run of the mill ones today do not.
Thank you for your comprehensive reply. Yes I am aware temperature is a big factor and testing this watch at 10c was not a good working temperature but its where the machine is housed for now. Its only been used in anger once so far. I bought it from Japan and had it just over a month. Plan to do a video on it but as I am no expert on the machine or electronics I can only show how I use it really and I want to find out for myself how much adjustment a trimmer can give on a watch.
Are you suggesting that even if I have the ideal temperatures that "regulating" the trimmer would not really improve anything? I have a Seiko 0634-5019 which runs at least 1 second a day fast on the machine and was going to adjust this one.

@@MyRetroWatches you can find articles on temperature compensation and estimate where the watch will run at the temperature you are aiming for, then regulate it at its actual current temperature to hit a specific target you estimated. Or, just shoot for perfect and then come back later after seeing the watch’s actual rate average over time and then speed it up or slow it down accordingly. But honestly, with a watch that doesn’t do temp compensation, there isn’t much point in being too exact, so I shoot for being on the plus side always because it’s easy to hack the watch when I go to use it and the rate difference over the course of a few days is negligible. I just had my 0439 on the tester the other day. I had it on my wrist for a long time. Put it on the mic and got a reading of +.015 (3 digits on a QT-2100). I left it there and watched it go all the way up to +.250 as it cooled down to room temperature, which I think was 23°, so about a 7° delta. But wearing the watch all day, it held within a second every time I checked.
Had a lovely spot of tea while watching, here in the colonies. 🤗

Brilliant. You're very brave to dismantle that to that degree. I received a new Sekonda LCD that has a bezel thats sort of a panam homage without the functionality, but the Seiko has a much better case.

Cool old watch.
All oscillators are affected by temperature. Super accurate quartz oscillators have a "crystal oven" that keeps the reference at a fixed temperature, at which it is calibrated. That temperature is maintained in future measurements to ensure maximum accuracy. Back in the day it was easier to heat up something to a target temperature then maintain it at an arbitrary temperature.

It's still done that way. For both time and voltage standards at least ovenised crystals and references are how it's done.

I've been an electronic engineer for over 45 years.. I have had a collection of LED watches, and bought my first in 1976! A cheap Texas Instruments watch. I love watches, cameras, HiFi and ..and... My fave watch is my Speedmaster Albino.
I mainly wanted to say I was blown away when the circuit board was revealed. A thing of beauty. What a surprise that was. (I thought I had seen everything..)

I have some Casiotron (first ever Casio watches) from 1974/5 and they were on ceramic boards with the traces within the board. They look like drawn on from a pencil if that makes sense. Amazing for such early beginnings.

Thank you for this video .. I got a M158-5009. You have three time zones GMT (fixed as far as I now), hometown time and destination time. Works perfect for a 45 year old LCD watch and the Japanese were at this time outstanding in such technology. Years are ending with 2009 but I put year 1996 as it matches the year 2024.

Enjoyed the vid, never thought digital watches get restored! I always liked the Red LED/LCD? Ones from late 70’s when I was a youngster. I kinda kept an eye out for one for nostalgia & chanced upon one at a car boot - but was more upmarket than the plastic jobbies/straps ones I remembered. Very stylish / thick heavy steel strap, very nice imho. I bought without testing just for the look. My surprise when I pushed the buttons a few hours later - it worked! I discovered it again only last week - & it still works!!!! Not changed the battery in all that time - no idea when the battery installed.
It’s not massively bright - the segments look underpowered - but thought I’d leave it until it doesn’t work. Tempted now to replace battery….
Maybe I’ll find out what make it is as there’s no writing on it. Thanks again for your channel.
Great video Michael! I’ve repaired and restored several of the Seiko Pan Am’s (M158-5009) and they are a very intricate and interesting timepiece. I wish I had this video as a reference, it would’ve saved me a lot of trial and error. It’s always nice to see another piece of history brought back to life. Well done!

I hunt all over the world for watches . This one actually came from Japan. Only place I don’t buy from is your country because post to UK is on another level of expense and then I get taxed on receipt too..

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. I think you've spawned some digital and electric interest with this one and your older Timex Electric/Dynabeat video. I bought a watch lot that arrived Saturday and in it I found almost a cosmetic pristine 79 Timex Electric (not running) and a Timex Quartz Lithium Digital Chronograph, so I'm going to rehab them. Actually, the chronograph runs flawless, but it's got some black dots on the clear top layer. I'm not sure if that is the LCD, maybe so.

I had, until recently, a Seiko LC Quartz 0124 and the screen would fade out if left in my watch box. Left it in the sun a few days and it seemed to ‘charge’ the LC Display for a while….
Awesome Pan Am and great video! Seiko technology was amazing in the 70s! I’m a Seikopath but don’t usually go in for digital. However just scored a NOS boxed UC-3000 with its keyboard. Cant wait to get a battery in it
