When most people use audio compression in music production, they tend to throw it on everything, crank up the output, and call it a day. This is not how compression was meant to be used. In this video, we learn how to use compression properly, the difference between different kinds of compressors, and how to not make your compressors totally suck.
    Compressors used in this video:
    Waves C1 graphic compressor
    LA2A Compressor
    Universal Audio (UAD) 1176

As someone who's watched a lot of explainer videos on basic principles like EQ, compression, etc., you consistently get more information across in fewer words than others.
As an amateur home musician, these are invalvuable resources.

I am neither an audio engineer nor a musician, but a mere hobbyist streamer, who is invested in audio engineering. But this was so easy to understand and down to the point, that I will point people towards your video as a reference for people who ask me about compression!

I'm trying to improve at recording vocal covers and this was easy to understand. If you made a beginner/intro to mixing vocals vid I would give it a serious listen. Thank you!

@@AudioHaze please! I would also appreciate a beginner tutorial for mixing vocals from start to end (especially hip-hop vocals). Thanks for your educational videos, they're really interesting to watch! I actually understand and remember most of the stuff after watching:)

Notably, there IS actually a place for smashing with a compressor, and that is on the room when mixing drums for some genres.

This video is helpful in giving understanding of compression. I noticed that while you were setting the threshhold you kept calling it ratio.

You have a great way of teaching and explaining. And I great voice, too! Have you thought of making ASMR? 😃 I'm slowly trying to learn what I can to improve my audio and your videos are helping me so much! Thanks!

I'm glad I could help! haha I've never though about it no, who knows :) If you're interested in audio and ASMR I've seen some cool ones that use two microphones panned to stereo to represent the human ear, could be cool!

@@AudioHaze yes! That's my next purchase plan. I found your channel researching microphones. A lot of ASMR channels use two NT1s to get binaural audio.

@@ASMRSoundWaves Ah I didn't know that! Thats perfect then, you could also use something like DearVR (which is free!) to get into spatial audio, which would realllyyyy make the whole experience feel like a 3D environment.

I think at 6:30 you meant to say "if I take my THRESHOLD down to really low like this..." Not Ratio...? I mean, you're pulling the ratio down with the threshold (that's my understanding, at least), so I guess what you said kind of makes sense?? It's just that you see the actually threshold meter change when you move it down and you don't see the ratio change, so yeah... It was a little confusing to me -Wording it that way...
