Yeah, I'm sitting with a bunch of polished turds. I can do all this editing - but I have a cheap condenser mic, I record in a completely untreated room room and I am not a good singer 😂

It all depends on the song. If it's a very open beat then the reverb can add a dynamic sound (especially a reverb that moves) which fills out the song and adds a depth to it. I agree that too much reverb in a very busy beat can complicate the mix and distort the overall perspective, but as art is subjective; one must follow their intuition and personal taste.

Why compare the reverb at 100% wet on the vocal track with the return at a way lower level? I get the practical reason why one should use returns but at a same percentage or level, would there be an actual difference between the return and the effect directly on the track?

I think what he means is that you lose volume from the dry signal by adding the reverb to the track, and if you already like where it is sitting in the mix, you would then have to add gain the the signal chain. Easier sometimes to think of the reverb as a different track, another instrument if you will.

I'm not sure all of what audacity has stock, but Valhalla has a free reverb called supermassive that I use all the time. Just dial the mix down a little if it gets to crazy which it does sometimes :) valhalladsp.com/shop/reverb/valhalla-supermassive/
