  • Is it "merci de ..." or "merci pour"? How do you thank someone for something in French? Join Mark from Coffee Break in this Walk, Talk and Learn French video and learn exactly when to use "merci de" and when to use "merci pour".
This video was based on the phrase "Roland Garros vous remercie d'avoir utilisé les transports en commun", meaning "Roland Garros thanks you for using public transport. In the video Mark explains that you can, in fact, use both prepositions "de" and "pour" with the word "merci", or the verb "remercier", but they are used in specific situations. You need to understand what it is you're thanking someone for in order to know when to use which expression.

Why not try to use "remercier quelqu'un DE faire / d'avoir fait quelque chose" or "remercier quelqu'un POUR quelque chose" in the comments. We're looking forward to your posts!

I love this series and the great explanations that accompany them. When I visited Paris last year, I was constantly taking pictures of signs and things just so I could take them home and try to translate them. It's nice to see videos explaining real world signs and situations. Thanks Mark!

Hello, Mark! Thank you for your lessons, which help me to learn French and Italian. I also watch your UA-cam channel.( Wish there would be more lessons here on these languages too!)
I would want to ask you a question on French: how to say because of in French, like in the example : " Because of rain your shirt is wet." Thank you in advance and keep up a good job!

These videos are filling in a lot of gaps for me. I'm also benefitting from the listening practice with the interview style videos.

Je vous remercie de produire un autre excellent leçon. J'aime bien Coffee Break French!
(I'm not convinced my use of 'produire' is correct, nor my use of 'un autre' but at least I'm trying!)

Bravo Angela ! Produire is ok, but perhaps if you're thanking us for publishing a new lesson, you could say "je vous remercie d'avoir publié encore une excellente leçon" (or "un excellent épisode"). But we totally understood what you said! C'est ça l'important !

I find understanding French way easier than constructing it myself. Will keep up my daily practice!

Great video, Mark! Will there be another season of the Verb fix at all? I have them on repeat!

Merci Julzableful ! Out of interest, what did you enjoy about the Verbfix? It's something we're considering, but we'd be really interested to know more about what you enjoyed about this course.

Je vous remercie d'avoir fait les épisodes! J'aime la structure et la répétition, et la musique m'aide à me souvenir... (I hope I said that well enough to understand!). The examples are fantastic too! They help me to understand the different contexts relevant for each verb. Thanks again for such valuable language-learning tools!
