that face she made in the manga was just as impactful, despite the fact that by nature of a manga, it wasn't able to flicker for a split second. it was just such a haunting drawing, i stared at it for ike 3 minutes
That face for one split second , such Hyper concentrated piercing hatred mixed with a sence of high alert and a Lust for trageted violence, all in one facial expression that looked like a horror movie jumpscare. Dude got the message real quick
"I've never seen her make a face like that. And I never want to see it again." The man was shook to his core with just that brief glimpse into how she really feels about her situation with Lakan.
Getting pregnant and losing a high Courtesans status, then having to serve lowly customers, only to catch syphilis and turn into a living corpse eating away at her body and brain. It's a fate worse than death to be honest. Maomao's mother had a right to be angry, but as you see in this episode, she isn't even there anymore.
I knew she would love that scene like I do it’s like so visceral and it’s a really fantastic scene cinematic wise so I was super excited to see her reaction to this episode
I don't think she's taking about having no emotions, just not having the capacity to feel love specifically. Or even not being able to feel specifically romantic love.
8:30 Listening to the Japanese, you can hear “koi” for “love”, which specifically means romantic love. So my reading of this line isn’t that she doesn’t feel capable of bonding to people - it’s that she’s aroace, or close to it, in a world where so much of womanhood is about bonds of sex, love, marriage. Courtesans whose job is to appeal to men, concubines whose job is to appeal to one man. Pairin’s love of muscles, Fuyou’s feelings for that military officer, the courtesan with the wheat stalks who got sweet-talked by that merchant’s son, 70% of the rear palace going gaga over Jinshi. And her sisters have probably assured her she’d feel that way someday, but she’s 18 already (the new year having come in winter) and the only thing that sparks any kind of passion in her is drugs.
The fact that the scene from MaoMao's mom in bed in this episode was made lighter in the anime compared to the manga and it still hits that hard is crazy. For those that don't know, in the manga, that strand of hair covering her nose... wasn't there...
This is the point the show starts to make the viewer start to see why maomao always says to not jump to conclusions without solid evidence, and do not speak on conjecture and guesses alone.
I had the replay it in slow-mo to catch the look on Maomao's face. It was sooooo good I just had to study it. Also watched it several times because, wow.
I'm gonna start sharing this now: She should react to Ascendance of a Bookworm or Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense. Those anime are 100% for her, someone from Patreon please suggest those please
+1, Ascendance of a Bookworm is amazing, even the truncated anime version (the light novel is simply fantastic, I've read through the whole series at least twice and bought hard copies of the books)

Yea both mediums are doing a good job of sticking to their own style. The manga lets you fully grasp the sheer weight of that emotion. The anime lets you understand how quickly she throws her barriers up, she only lets you see a peek of her emotional state. Both have their own impact~
@@ArlanKelsThe anime really sells Jinshi's perspective especially. Watching Alicia make the connections is a wonder. Most of them, I either didn't make at all, or it took me a long time to do. This series is genius, everything has a reason if you can make the connections like Maomao or Luomen. It's a real shame people keep spoiling things for Alicia in the comments. What matters most to Maomao is she was raised by Luomen and her big sisters at Verdigris.
28 minutes ago? Well looks like I picked a good time to binge your reactions. Sorry to hear people keep trying to spoil you, Alicia. I can understand if you don't want to check out comments now on any series. 😢
Finally I have caught up, at least to this episode. I saw that face and I was like "I gotta see the reaction to that face". When monocle is on the screen it's definitely a high level of creep. Hopefully Suirei? isn't getting manipulated.
I think that this episode showed us some of the reasons why Maomao has to keep on paying money at Verdigris House and why the Madam wanted her to be a courtesan. Please anyone correct me if I'm wrong, about that or anything else. Even if I am wrong, I love how this series doesn't show or tell us everything at first. Like what's all the money Maomao makes is used for, besides supporting her adopted father, (she may be indebted for that solider spending a night with 1 of the 3 princesses). I had wondered but never considered that there may have been more reasons why she needed more money despite her being fired or relieved of debt despite Jinshi buying out her contract earlier, granting her freedom.
I'm gonna say it now, I think Laken is my favourite character, not because of his actual character, but because of how his story in particular messed with me while reading the manga.
Well we have the answer, and the reason it was asked... mostly... There's still some key details that prevent me from talking about that or Surei. So many aspects of this episode are key to future episodes. I can't even talk about the morning glories either. So for those curious: Syphilis. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease, as shown, but we should be glad that Maomao's mother didn't contract it whilst pregnant with Maomao as it can pass from mother to child. Which can be lethal to the unborn child, or without fast treatment, disfiguring, and lethal to the new-born. The disease comes in stages, but some symptoms may show in different orders. The disease is a difficult one for medical professionals, not for the difficulty of treatment; penicillin is highly effective, but for it's ability to resemble other medical issues. First stage is a non-painful sore that forms where the bacteria entered the body, this stage is often missed as the sore can form inside the vagina or rectum, and thus is hard to see. Second stage is where the rashes form, usually around the trunk (the chest, stomach area, pelvis and back. In time, it also could appear on the limbs, the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet). The rash is often not itchy, and reddish brown. It can also be quite faint. Other symptoms of this stage include: Wartlike sores in the mouth or genital area, Hair loss, Muscle aches, Fever, Sore throat, Tiredness/fatigue, Weight loss, and Swollen lymph nodes. All of the above can come and go and should be treated quickly. In the older periods, such as the period we can conclude the story takes place, mercury was used as a treatment; it was somewhat effective, but in later stages the required dose would also kill the patient. This is where the latent stage would be, but it's more that the symptoms come and go during this stage. Then we have the tertiary stage. This is where Syphilis' most infamous symptom can emerge, as it can alter bone structure, which includes the nasal bridge. To be clear the patients nose doesn't just fall off, instead it collapses as the bone the cartilage is connected to is consumed by the disease, causing the nose to collapse into the face. Other symptoms include damage to the Brain, Nerves, Eyes, Heart, Blood vessels, Liver, Bones and joints. Bear in mind that it's about 30-40% of infected individuals that reach this stage without treatment. From Wikipedia here is a somewhat concerning statistic that Syphilis is making a comeback as in 2015, about 45.4 million people had syphilis infections, of which six million were new cases. During 2015, it caused about 107,000 deaths, down from 202,000 in 1990. After decreasing dramatically with the availability of penicillin in the 1940s, rates of infection have increased since the turn of the millennium in many countries, often in combination with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This is believed to be partly due to increased sexual activity, increased prostitution, and decreased use of condoms. And the final fun piece of information? We still don't have a vaccine for the disease.
I think the manga did the face Maomao made better. It was a face that was a combination of disgust, anger, and despair. I think because Maomao is pretty loyal and doesn't try to get around Jinshi or his orders. But that's an order she absolutely doesn't want to follow so it finally showed on her face. The Herb lady at the end has a few 4Koma style panels of her interactions with Maomao which I enjoyed. But I'll day it again that I personally really like this arc and how the characters stories sufficiently subverted my expectations. I'm actually really looking forward to your reaction to it considering how you reacted in this episode which didn't disappoint.
I was so excited for Alicia to get to this point and her reaction to the old man does not disappoint. Even with the most recent episodes I still wanna beat the shit outta the old geezer.
