How to stop your micro leader from sticking in the rain

- We've received several questions recently about thin micro leaders sticking to the rod blank when wet. This is an extremely annoying phenomenon when it occurs, and just a little sprinkle of rain can suddenly make casting properly exasperating.

Old dominion trout bum, on UA-cam, has a video on this. This is where I got the idea from. It actually works really really well !! I use Yozori braided line in a 0.006” diameter, 10 lb test. I leave it on the rods so when it’s wet or raining I don’t have to deal with a sticking mono on the blank. Thanks!!! Using plumbers double sided black tape works well to attach the tippet or braid to the rod blank.

Very handy tip and good demonstration. Rain is the most common one but also great for when your rod gets wet from those times where your rod ends up in the water by your own mess ups. For example if my leader wraps itself around the tip and I'm mid river in swiftish current i often have to awkwardly hold my rod 2/3rds of the way up while I unwrap it, meanwhile the rest of the blank is in the water getting wet. And on an overcast winter day it can take an age to dry.
The only real problem that existed for me wenn using a micro leader. Now, there's something to try. Thanks Devin.

Great idea! If you dip your rod in the water for any reason, you get the same sticking issue, so this is a good year round fix.

Great tip. I plan to do this to my nymphing rods as well as my 3 wt conventional rods. Line stick has always been a problem for me with UL fly rods.

Thanks, nice idea. Any suggestions for avoiding the other problem I have with a micro leader - getting it wrapped around the tip of the rod a lot?
That’s usually a casting issue. 1. Maintain an oval cast with a lot of energy on the back cast. 2. Wait until your back cast is fully turned over before making your forward cast. 3. Keep your false casts short and shoot the last cast if you need extra length.
Also, if you are rigging, keep the leader in the water so the current holds it away from the rod.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 Yes, it is usually when I am mucking about getting stuff out of my pack or changing flies with no tension in the system, and I look up to find a couple of wraps of leader around the rod tip. They are much harder to flip out than with a thicker stiffer leader. Thanks again for sharing your experience
How do you keep your loc tite brushes so nice? Mine always look like an old wicker broom after about 3 times taking the cap off. Great tip btw!

Great tip, Devin! Thank you. I never really had this problem before I moved to Oregon… and it’s been bugging the crap out of me lately. I will try it soon. I think I will try putting that final loop in place before I start wrapping the tippet material. Any reason not to? Merry Christmas.
If you put too many wraps over the loop you won’t be able to get the thread back through. You can also use a bobbin threader and it’s a little easier to hold in place while you make the final wraps.
My micro leader sticks to the rod all the time, rain or shine. It keeps the mono from shooting most of the time once it’s wet. Your method sounds permanent with the glue. I’m going to try it with tape first. I hope this works.

Yes. I just leave them there myself.
Does it help as well in dry conditions?

It doesn’t do much in dry conditions.
Interesting idea to do it semi-permanently. Though it looks like it takes quiet a while to do though. When I see it’s going to rain I just use duct-tape and tape in the tippet at the tip and then wind down my whole rod and tape in the tippet at the but section again. Takes about a minute to do. Have you ever done it like that?
I'd be a bit worried trying to get the duct tape off myself so I haven't used it that way. When I'm not doing it for the camera, it takes me about 5-10 minutes per rod and then it's pretty much always there in case of unexpected rain.
For a very temporary fix could you just wrap the rod and secure the end wraps with plumbers tape? I thought I may have seen that somewhere.

Honestly there are so few rod manufacturers who have micro leaders on their minds that I think it’s not really on their radar. Unsanded rod blanks help but there are definitely still improvements to be made in this arena.
Have you used the Hardy Ultralite LL rod? It looks like it has some texture that mimics the tippet wraps, but that might be purely a design coincidence.
@@patrickdwyer433 I have. It doesn’t fix the issue since the ridges aren’t large enough.
