Another Realistic Sculpin Pattern | Low Fat Sculpin | Fly Tying Tutorial

- In this fly tying tutorial, Cheech ties the Low Fat Sculpin
This pattern is a product of always tinkering with sculpin patterns. I love how the sculpin toad swims but I wish it were a bit simpler to tie. I literally had this idea come to me in the middle of the night and I rushed to work, ran upstairs to my vise, and cranked a few out as concepts. After a bit of tweaking, this is a super simple pattern that will swim just like a sculpin. I also tie these in tan, but I bet it would be good in many colors and sizes.

I've been searching for the right sculpin pattern to imitate the gobies that the big smallmouths on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence gulp down like candy. I think this is exactly what I'm looking for! It's durable, nails the profile, rides hook point up, doesn't nosedive on the fall, and utilizes synthetic to create the head. Of course, I'm not fly fishing in 15-40’ of water there and with all that current, but this, especially if I can work a looped wire on the underside to connect a leader and weight, may be a perfect dropshot bait. Of course, I'll tie some up for use as streamers in manageable rivers that I fish as well, but this video has me really excited to tie some of these beauties up.
I used to catch huge smallmouth when I lived in Northern NY. Grasse River in Madrid NY. It's a tributary to the St. Lawrence. Learned to fly fish there. Cool little place
@@joeg5414 Thanks for the info. I'll check into it the next time I'm up there. I don't apologize for enjoying fishing with gear, but I'd love to tangle with some of those jumbo smallies on the fly. Thanks again.
I'd be remiss if I failed to celebrate the sweet flow Cheech is rockin. Glad you don't have Curtis cut your hair anymore and you can pursue the social media fame you deserve.
Cheech great creation looks amazing!!! Love the hair with the beard stepping it up!!!! You look like you should be buying hot rods!!! Lol
That'll hunt. Gonna make me some stoneroller patterns for my waters. Great idea.
That’s a wicked tie!
love, Love, LOVE!!! Can't wait to spin some of these up and take em for a swim!
Thanks big Steve.
That’s a sweet pattern Cheech, thanks for your channel!
Happy little sculpin! Lol Pretty sick patern.
Thanks!
Looks to be a great one. This is on my list to tie!
Really cool fly!
Sweet bro 🎣🏴🇬🇧
Tungsten dumbells and rabbit on the hide. An absolute pleasure to cast. 5X is the way to go.
Well done
I think this could be a good frog imitation also. If you can get it to float and add a second tail for legs
A resin wizard.
Dang, that fly would fool me.
I bet this would work well in the salt
That sculpin pattern is scary. Lol.
😢 I have not ventured into UV Glues and Resins. I am still on super glue and sally hansen. I may try a sculpin head with a lighter barbell a little farther back on the hook
Glad you brought up the resin allergy issue. I’ve been rash and exema issues the last year. Sounds like it doesn’t affect everyone? I’m using solarez lately. Loon before. Is it common?
Not super common but there are people who it definitely affects.
At about 4:30, a debate about what is a fin and what is not?
Ok, been through the Fly Fish Food tool dropdown and I cannot find Renamint (?) scissors. They look like I need them and I ask where do I find them? Thanx amigo.
Here you go. www.flyfishfood.com/search?q=Renomed
Cool fly! If we don’t want to use resin for the reasons you mentioned would deer hair be a good substitute?
Deer hair would be way too buoyant. Check out the Sculpin Toad for a fly that will swim the same without much resin.
Do these work on the provo? are there sculpin on the provo?
Yes and yes
Could you use silicone instead of resin and get same profile?
that should work well, i have done this before on other flys i have tied
What hook is that
Hey Cheech, does the Solarez Flex work better for forming the head?
It’s good, but most of their resins stay pretty flexible if they are thin.

😂 Cheech what's up with the hair my guy ? Looks like you need a little haircut. Lol
Yup. Just got er trimmed up last Friday 😂😂
