This is such a classic show. They would never make a show like this today.
Yeah - cause it was not funny.
@@colincampbell4261 maybe it’s not your type of comedy
@@frozengamer3030 it was not comedy. Really bad example of british tv. Similar with "Love thy neighbour".
Although it did have an American adaptation called “what a country “
@@colincampbell4261maybe not your definition of comedy or funny to you ; but seeing it became one of the most popular comedy series of all time then you’re in the minority.
From what I understand, the show wasn't intended to satirise foreigners but to satirise the English language itself and our culture.
Not really - I watched it when it first aired and it was very much of its time. It wasn't satirising the English language in the slightest it was very much a "how would people relate to each other if national stereotypes were emphasised" (including English stereotypes). It wasn't malicious and made fun of everyone equally but we can't pretend it wasn't what it was.
@@finncullenWhat a time it was.. no cancel culture, soft people suing even when It wasnt insulting them.. now you have to censor word "se× or id!ot" as somebody will feel harrased
@@finncullen
It Was Way Ahead Of Its Time ⏲️
To set the stage, this was a TV Comedy show about teaching the Non Native English residents how to speak English. In the days of None Political Correctness
PC AND WOKE SHITE TODAY.
Connor, delirious with tiredness trying to make sense of a 70s British comedy 😅
My favourite comedy series of all time! stumbled on it 4 years ago and watched the entire series to the end, such clean humour with brilliant word play
I watched this the first time 'aired' (that means 'shown' on TV). FYI: And just in case English is NOT your first language (?) - that is what we call a JOKE!. By the way, if you DON'T get the joke, you are NOT English and must be deported or, as a VERY last resort, SHOT!
By the way; It's usually the YANKS (bloody Americans), that we choose to HANG first - those from NEW England are prime targets... Just saying! 🤔 "Is that some of that British humour and banter I hear about???" - Hell, I'm climbing into my BUNKER and hunkering down!
I loved this show when I was a girl, although this is not the first episode, which might have been a better one to start with as an introduction to the characters. I had a crush on the actor Barry Evans who played the teacher, Jeremy Brown. He's teaching English as a foreign language at night school to immigrants of various nationalities and religions. It pokes fun of racial stereotypes. Many of the actors involved were not the nationalities they were playing, which is a touchy subject in itself these days. Take no notice of those who criticise it. I'm part Swedish and I have no problems with the fact that a real Swedish actress joined the cast for a couple of seasons and played on what was considered a typical Swedish blonde stereotype of the 1970s - because it's a bit of *fun.* The haters have no sense of humour.
P.S. It couldn't have been appendicitis as the character was clutching his lower left side and the appendix is on the lower right. Someone wasn't paying attention in biology lessons! 😁
You are not a girl anymore?
Jolly good
The Indian lady did get the Biblical story of Samson and Delilah more or less right.
A very good sitcom which hasn't been shown on TV in the UK for many years due to its national stereotypes & political incorrectness.
An ironic fact: MYL was heavily criticized in the UK for being racist and culturally insensitive and guilty of making comedy out of the ridicule of people of other nationalities but was extremely popular around he rest of the world.
As a small child in London, I suddenly realised that my Mother and I were sitting opposite the lady who played the French student. I was absolutely mesmerised by her and stared at her for most of our journey. As she got off at her stop, she gave me lovely smile and a kiss on the cheek, I never washed again ;-).
Sir did you and your mother ask about her experiences on set?
This was a very popular sitcom on ITV ( There were three TV channels at the time, in the 70s), BBC1 BBC2 and ITV, Independent TV. It was the only commercial channel. It was about an English Language school, most of it was set in the classroom with this set of stereotypes, and their nice English teacher. It ran to 42 episodes between 1977 and 1985, there were imitations of it in 10 other countries including the US, where it was called What A Country!
I WAS 5 YRS OLD WHEN STARTED 13YRS OLD WHEN ENDED, BUT I THOUGHT IT ENDED IN 1981. CARETAKER OR AKA JANITOR IN AMERICA WAS IN LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR.
ALI WAS IN AINT HALF AS HOT MUM AS PUNK WALLAH.BECAUSE WE DONT SAY GOODER
This was such a great show (which would never be allowed to be made today). But its true British Humour at its finest. As you said, they're so stereotypical it isn't offensive. They were making a family comedy, while poking fun at the small minded few who truly believed this was they way people of the countries represented spoke and acted.
Remember this when it was originally on
A funny show but now tinged with sadness because its star Barry Evans had such a tragic end to his life.
He did have a very tragic end to his life and his life just seemed to fall apart after MYL. He definitely deserved better.
This was back when people could laugh at themselves , unlike today.
I don't know why people so readily point this out as one of the most rasissist shows of all time or other ridiculous slurs. It's so light and silly and the imitations are generally very warm and kind, the only people that come off negatively are usually the Brits. It's just another easy thing to knock, when usually they've never even watched it, lazy and pathetic.
I loved this show.
I wish we could have this again. But people of today would be up in arms at the mere thought of a show like this being made.
Was never funny in the first place. Did you like "love thy neighbour" as well?
They guy who played the teacher, Barry Evans, was found dead in suspicious circumstances, presumed murdered but the case was never solved
Wait what?
No, it wasn't offensive and even now things very rarely are. Jumping on the "offended" band wagon is quite a recent phenomenon by people who's craving for celebrity/attention has no other way. Mind you, at the time it was only mildly amusing at best.
Ah! back when no one got offended.
Blimey, you'll be doing Love They Neighbour next.
The 70s had a lot of stuff that would be considered quite problematic now.
Only by the usual bedwetters. The figure of fun in Love Thy Neighbour was the racist white man….to comedy was laughing AT him and his views.
@@Bungle-UK totally agree, same with Alf Garnett. The problem is, people often don't see who the butt of the joke is.
Love international multilingual and multicultural classes. They care so much of each other. Love the episode when each of them is getting the medicine for their teacher, bringing presents and generally their warmth and care.
You should watch the first episode of season 1, where they introduce all the characters and explain the situation.
I recommend you also show called "Allo 'Allo!". Fantastic comedy from 80-ties.
What I love about this show is that its not racist because it makes fun of everyone equally 🗿
As a very little boy at the time, I remember this being on TV on a Saturday teatime
Yes! Yes! Yes! A hidden gem of a Britcom. It was done in the USA in 1986 as WHAT A COUNTRY! as a vehicle for Russian comic Yakov Smirnov
Hilarious show poking fun at everyone’s stereotypes but with no malice or meanness
The stereotypes work because they give each character flare and personality.
A reminder of why ITV comedies were terrible until Rising Damp. Try Rising Damp - A Body like Mine
This show is both educational and funny ❤
I've got every episode a classic piss take.
Celebrates all the things we CAN'T say now !
We only used to have 2 TV channels in the UK, BBC and ITV (Independent TeleVision), until 1964 ,when they introduced BBC2.
We have to pay for a yearly licence (£159.00) to watch TV.
YEAH. Anne Hathaway, the 21st century actress was Shakespeare's wife !! SAME NAME ....DIFFERENT CENTURY !!
You don't know the story of SAMSON from the bible either !? What DO they teach in American schools !?
Gilbert AND Sullivan wrote operas. Gilbert O'Sullivan was a 1970's singer.
This series and fawlty towers best comedy of all time
It was this programme that inspired me to learn other languages. Thanks to the Open University I am now fluent in 7 languages. I am a Cunning Linguist.
Classic comedy and satire of national stereotypes, including the Brit, and the English language.
London Weekend Television, very vintage
At the time that this was screened, it was regarded as being very deliberately liberal, but in retrospect it was obviously quite offensive, albeit innocently. The programme was immensly popular and it brings back many memories. The lead actor Barry Evans came to a very sorry end and this has been well documented on UA-cam.
Oh dear. Even as the child of a traditional British family with liberal leanings, even at the age of seven I found this prime-time weekend program somewhat awkward to view. While its near-contemporaries, " 'Til Death Us Do Part" and 'Love Thy Neighblur', sought cleverly to expose their main characters, 'Alf Garnett' (played by Warren Mitchell, a Jewish British socialist actor, btw) and 'Eddie Booth' (played by Jack Smethurst) respectively, as racists, 'Mind Your Language' was, to me at least and even at the time, less excusable in exploiting the lazy (and offensive) ethnic tropes of 1970s British 'sit-com'.
I remember this 1st time around, it was shite then too
In your opinion!
I’ve recently started this series myself, good watch.
I was a fan of Barry (who was murdered) and in contact with the Sikh in this. His name was Albert Moses and was in 007 Goldfinger. It was a hilarious British comedy but was very politically incorrect in later years and they couldn't continue because the world changed and it became a "no no". Oh well. Albert wanted to produce another series but it never got off the ground. He died in Sri Lanka. Most of them are passed on now.
Wow. That was first transmitted about 40 years ago.
It first aired in 1977, so it was 46 years ago.
@@Inaflap Even longer than I thought!
Some of these lines sound like they were written by a 12 year old. Some are only funny because the actor delivers them well.
You should really watch the first season first episode of this
I remember watching this as a teenager
Oh good grief no! Just no....
Terrible back in the 70's and still dreadful today
No it's great stuff love it. The crap made in the uk now is abysmal!
@@ianpunter4486 This is better than the large majority of panel shows.
You need see the first episode
The Chinese woman here plays the killer cleaning lady in Johnny English 2
The actor who played Max was in the movies Midnight Express and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Funny thing is mate, you would be sitting there as the American student, hilarious reaction, this is a learn English school, three cheers to you thanks that was great
In the Mickley flanagan bit about being an adult, when he says in some mind your language corridor, this is the show he is talking about
I recommend you watch episode 1 for a better feel for the show.😂
I am sure we would use a word known as "better" instead of "gooder"
Thank you for my friend. When we took the piss out of each other as friends. Brothers and sisters as they are in my own image. X
The word "better" originates from the superlative of the Old English word bōt, meaning "remedy, reparation" (later becoming the Middle English word bote, meaning "advantage, help, profit"). It is a word that now survives in its simple form only in the expression "to boot".
'Su-lee would you nip down.....'
He then corrects himself.
Even though Su-lee is Chinese, not Japanese. 😅
I love ur reactions....😂🤣...(.this was very British humour in the 70's lol )...esp to British Comedy...ur face id a picture when confused initially!
PLEASE LOOK AT "PHOENIX NIGHTS" ...unless ive missed some of ur videos that have this in!?😬 I think you will defo appreciate the humour...."BENIDORM" is another...the early seasons. Thankyou for a great channel 👍
This is the best comedi ever I nerve get tired watching it.
Not really my thing. I prefer the TV show Rising Damp from that time as it’s still relevant todays & so funny.
Surley you know sansom hair was his strength from bible love this man god bless xx
You wrong it yo much taco 😂😂😂😂
this is a comedy your meant to laugh not just do the quiz !!!! omg !!!!
"Can you nip down" to the Chinese girl 😂😂😂 subtle.
That’s what it was like in the 70s
It was ITV sitcoms like this that made me glad for the BBC in the 70s
Great video 👍 This was a stereotype of all nations held by a lot of British people,it was a great program never to be repeated.
You do realise that was only end of part one, only half the programme reacted to so far.
As to what it is. Pretty obvious, a situation comedy from the 1970s before everyone lost their minds about racism. They tried to revive it later, in the 1990s iirc, didn't last long.
To me, this reminded me of my Spanish class.
Great, greater, greatest. Good, better, best.
ITV - Independent Television
Used to love this show - was Nice to see the LWT logo too - used to see it a lot living in London Area
It is in no way offensive, back in the day people knew how to laugh at themselves.
This is very old sketch
It's a sitcom.
Mind your Language could not be shown on UK telly now; even at the time it seemed to be a little racist/sexist, with laughs generated from crude stereotypes, and today is considered one of the most dire tv comedies not to have the plug pulled on it
This show would not be allowed in these politically correct times lol
Classic series..u will love it
1970,s comedy about eveningschool for immigrants to improve there english , , full of laughs, never affensive , just honest humour
Francois Pascal was every guys dream.
Have you reacted to Still Gsme yet?
Those who finds that show offensive were actually racists.
Yes. Story true about Solomon
14:58
The second part was funnier
The clue is really in the title Mind your Language. It is about how ridiculous the English language can be.
not many funny moments in this but you muttered over them anyway
It's not surprising that it wasn't repeated on television after initial run. Too politically incorrect today.
I'm learning too. 😮😂🇬🇧
And the word was?
Although the characters are interesting and likable, the show has not aged well.
Meh. I think these accents were way funnier back when we didn't hear them on a daily basis. Just kind of normal now 😂
I remember watching this in the '70s. Definitely stereotypes, but it was normal then, and so was the racism unfortunately. But it was funny then
Not much. I never drink the stuff😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This could help you Connor to get a grasp of the most beautiful language in the world, if you don't want to learn go to the back of the class 😜🏴🤪👍
BACK LATE 70S EARLY 80S WHEN DANIELLE WENT GUTTED EVEN ALTHOUGH I WAS 9 YRS OLD WHEN IT FINISHED, CLASSED AS RACIST NOW IN UK. SORRY PLEASE ONLY 3 CHANNELS BBC BBC 2 ITV THEN WAS QUEEN THEN PRINCE CHARLES NOW KING CHARLES. YES BOSS ASSO
Even if you ignore the offensiveness of this it is still awful stuff.
I don't find it offensive.
How so The acting is good & it's well-written.
It isn’t offensive in the slightest
One of the WORST pieces of British 70's tv comedy.
I'm not saying it's devoid of comedy but it's very dated and patronising to ethnic minorities.
Oh look the PC police!
@@philiposbourne3038 hardly but it's not that funny
It's stupid need TV licence even if not watch BBC and as TV licence pay to BBC
Work? Don't vape x lol x
this show was terrible.please don't waste your time on it .there are many better sitcoms than this garbage
Oh look another one of the PC police telling people what to watch and like!
There is an American remake of this show called What a Country! This version shows foreign students working towards their citizenship test.
Mind Your Language has been used as a resource to teach English as a Second Language in various countries as it shows the idiosyncrasies and pitfalls of British idioms for those for whom English is not their first language.
I don't remember this one mate. 🤔??
