1:03:38 Truer words were never spoken! Please do go back to Season 1. An education inspector visits them in Episode 2 and you’ll see what their opinion is regarding Mr. Brown’s teaching methods. It’s hard to get a lot of teaching done on the very first class, especially with a bunch of students like this lot. I assure you that you’ll have a lot more sympathy for him if you see the kind of things he’s had to deal with in this classroom. He was also very lenient with them last term and too accommodating with their shenanigans, and that’s why he thinks he’s failed - he’s not been professional enough and working them hard enough (that’s not to say he’ll succeed in his goal this time). Certainly not all, and perhaps it’s debatable whether most, but I’d say more than just a few students have learned and improved quite a bit from where they began. Professionally speaking, he’s not the best, or even very good, but I think he’s competent, when evaluated in context and not just by whether his students passed a standardized exam. Personally, he’s so endearing, maybe a bit too endearing, and I love him!

      Great comment!
I completely agree that the first class, especially with a diverse group of learners like Mr. Brown's, presents significant challenges. It's not just about teaching the curriculum; it's about managing personalities, cultural differences, and language barriers, all of which add layers of complexity to the teaching process. Your observation about Mr. Brown's leniency and accommodation of the students' shenanigans is particularly thought-provoking. It highlights the delicate balance teachers must strike between being authoritative and approachable.
The point about Mr. Brown feeling like he's failed because he hasn't been professional or strict enough is intriguing. It brings up the larger question of what constitutes success in a classroom setting. Is it just about passing exams, or is it about personal and linguistic growth? As you rightly noted, more than a few students have shown significant improvement, which is a testament to some degree of success in his teaching methods.
Your comment about Mr. Brown being competent, especially when evaluated in the context of his unique classroom, is an important one. It speaks to the idea that teaching effectiveness can't always be measured by conventional standards like standardized exams. The personal connection and endearment that Mr. Brown fosters with his students are crucial elements of his teaching style, even if they might not align with traditional views of professionalism.
If this comment, gets a 100 likes then we'll revisit the Mind Your Language and look at the episode you mention.

@@ELTUnderTheCovers Wow, thank you for replying so thoughtfully to my comment - I’ve rarely had anyone take my comments so seriously and respond in such a thorough manner! I highly doubt that your reply will get 100 likes any time in the near future, so I guess that’s the end of exploring this series for a serious/critical purpose; but do keep it in mind for recreational viewing (I mean just on your own in your own time, not for the channel). Good luck!

We strive to engage with comments and feedback in a thorough and meaningful manner, so I'm delighted to hear that it resonated with you.
While it's true that exploring certain topics for serious or critical purposes may not always garner as much attention as more lighthearted content, I believe that every thoughtful conversation and exploration adds value to our understanding and appreciation of the subject matter.
I will certainly keep your suggestion in mind for recreational viewing, as it's important to strike a balance between educational content and personal enjoyment. And who knows, perhaps there are others out there who share a similar interest in exploring this series from a serious and critical perspective!

0:47 Cultural appropriation, is when people embrace aspects of a different culture without mentioning what that culture is.
Acting like they've invented the beautiful aspects of that culture.
Cultural inspiration, is when someone embraces things from a different culture, and tells people which culture its from. This ISN'T stealing, and everyone appreciates this.

She wore a Christian Cross around her neck in a few episodes.
Some people have Muslim names, because their parents found it pretty.
But their parents are non Muslims.
For example the rapper Wiz Khalifa, has said his grandfather is Muslim but he isn't.
Lastly the name "Jamila", isn't specific to Islam/Muslim.
It is an Arabic word, which means "beautiful".
They're also non Muslim Arabs who have Arabic names.
