- On today’s episode of Homeworthy, we’re taking you inside AphroChic founders Jeanine Hays and Bryan Mason’s lovely 100 year-old farmhouse in upstate New York. Jeanine and Bryan’s approach to designing their home was greatly inspired by African diaspora culture. Structural decorative pieces, artwork, literature and generational heirlooms are thoughtfully peppered throughout each space as a means of celebrating and connecting with their ancestors. Enjoy!

FINALLY!!!! This is a long overdue feature. So glad to see Jeanine and Bryan featured since they have been featuring homes through an African diasporic lens for over 15 years.
I really appreciated Bryan Mason's description of how his & Jeanine Hays' book, AphroChic, was sort of an ode to the "missing character in the narrative of American history" explaining the solid truth of the matter, that within our American culture "we tend to narrow our concept of what the African American experience can be" only showcasing homes of celebrity or poverty & no in between. Growing up on tv we saw the Huxtable's home where some African art & sculpture could be gleaned...However, nowhere has there been true representation of homes with African diaspora culture! Thank you Bryan & Jeanine for sharing your beautiful home & Homeworthy for bringing it to us!

Representation and visibility is so important. As a person of the African Diaspora I just totally fell in love with this couple and their home. Thoroughly enjoyed this. First time I’m hearing about Aphrochic. I totally agree with him too….the middle ground is largely absent….it’s the same for gardening which frustrates me since I love gardening.
The part about long COVID oh no….😢😢 bless her. Love the conversion guest bed feature ….clever.
This existed for a long time always gotta be a black Person especially in this woke generation to act like blacks don’t have or live a certain way 🤣🤣🤣

I think a lot of the homes featured are based on who the producers know. If you've noticed, a lot of homeowners featured are designers, including the black folks featured.
There've been close to 10 black homeowners being featured on this channel. And if they're looking for more fabulous black people, they can always come to my house. 😊

I like how they kept some of the original wood features, especially in the kitchen. Just proves you don’t have to update everything single thing in a home!

I agree with you. My neighbor did a 50K renovation of their kitchen and then sold their home. The new neighbors renovated the kitchen again immediately after moving in. They did donate the cabinets and counters that they were able to remove withou damage but they could have just kept what was there. Kitchens have become status symbols.
why should I be miserable? I love my kitchen. It's super beautiful! Also I feel free to not post my home but to just enjoy it with my family and friends. I think that you @jtucker9576 must be really miserabe to get so aggressive about somebody (me) stating my opinion.

Love the fact that they combined their passion for Afrocentric art and the historical character of the house.
I love the choice of the blue. And then I love how the blue monochromatic scheme allows all the colors in the room to be on full pop-power.
Bryan and Jeanine are very interesting people. They are a beautiful couple and their home is amazing! Their thoughtful design that incorporates culture is stunning! I appreciate their willingness to share their home with us and I am excited to see their online store.

This was the best episode, hands down, of a home that I have, including LA mansions & rustic European getaways. Why? The achievement here is historical, personal, & inspiring. The concept of Legacy (& what else is a home?) has been redefined in this couple’s home & work. I thank them & wish them well. 🙏🏽

I Love how the Farm House was modernized with the colors, pictures, stone surfaces, inherited pieces and African wooden statues amongst other materials.

I was delighted to see this episode with the founders of AfroChic and their beautiful home. I purchased a throw pillow from the company years ago that is one of my favorites. Included with the pillow was a gorgeous business card I saved which features the same yellow-and-white design used on their ‘Remix’ book cover. Jeanine and Bryan’s incorporation of Black history and culture in interior design is inspiring.
This is very lovely and I wish it gets wide distribution. Their home is beautiful and filled with great inspiration but the best part is the loving, supportive and fun relationship they have.

So happy Jeanine is doing better. I remember seeing various people from the design community posting about her. Their home is beautiful. It represents them fully and gives others who may not have an opportunity to enjoy the vastness of creativity within the African diaspora. The monochromatic library is my fav space. The artwork throughout is chef's kiss. So happy AphroChic is selling artwork so others can start or expand their collections. Well done home and space for continued healing and restoration.

Like the living room the rest of the house seems a little basic (need to sort that kitchen) and I hate Murphy beds. They’re a nice couple though.

Jeanine Hays and Bryan Mason have a beautiful home. Thank you Bryan for telling us about your book and reminding us that the black diasporic American culture is part of the American culture. I love all the African art in their home. I love libraries and I love their big reference table. In my home library we have lots of book cases. (I see a lot of books on a shelf. ) I did not see a lot of book cases in their library. Fascinating. They have a wonderful library with lots of seating and places to work or read. I love to play chess, and they have a beautiful chess set on their coffee table. (They should learn to play chess.) I loved her great-grandmother story on the doll and got her college degree while in her 70s. Love it. The bubble chandelier was too cute. I had never seen a chandelier like that. I like the pillow they designed- their very first design. Love all the stories. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home.

I really enjoyed this! They had so many interesting sculpture pieces that I am really interested in acquiring myself! I absolutely love their library and living room. The soap bubble chandelier is my fave. Congrats to them on their new home and their book! I am also interested in getting that afro surf book😍also so sorry they had such a horrible experience with covid but so happy they are getting better❤
