Homemade Digging Chain Mechanism

- The mechanism will be used to build a chain excavator. The length of the mechanism is over 120 cm measured from the axis of the drive, which should give about 100 cm of effective digging after deducting the height of the device. Auger to the ground away from the chain than it should be, but in the machine I'm building at the moment there will be a supported mechanism right behind the chain, and there will be a second auger to the ground behind the chain

Cool project, the points to think about
1 Need to be able to change the end bearing real easy, because the seals only last the first 100 meters, bearings don't last long.
2 The teeth need to be balanced, ie 2 teeth side by side, you'll have to limit the number to suit horsepower
3 You'll need removable wear plates on the top and bottom of the boom, the steel hardness to be slightly less than the chain.
4 The chain may not be heavy enough to last a long time.
5 You'll need a cleaning spade to trail the trencher.
Have a few more ideas but they are my own preferences. My trencher dug about 6 kilometers per day, and smashed itself regularly.

6. Next time drive the bearings in with a piece of alu or bronze pipe that DOES NOT touch the inner ring of the bearing, but only drives the outer ring. Like we've been taught to do it in industry. Because the way it's done here, you're pounding on the inner ring and the bearing balls are driving the outer ring. And yes Paulman, If I look at the leverage of the teeth vs the links of the chain, it looks a bit flimsy.
Thank you for the hints :) It is very important to me, especially if you are a person who uses such a machine, we'll see how it will work in the final stage, I'm sure I need to think about a few things :)
Paulman50 I was thinking the same thing about the teeth, needing 2 on each sled to pull straight on the chain, instead of cocking it side to side. 1 offset like that puts the entire load on 1 side link of the chain. Granted, 2 teeth would increase the load, but it would be more of an even pull. I would consider cutting rubber inserts to bolt onto the spare tabs that tuck behind the sleds (or a continuous band) to help keep debris from the chain.
Lovely build!👌🏻 A suggestion tough, a support to keep the toothplates level right before they’re moving on to the idling wheel. It will help against derailment headaches😅

Awesome build you are very skilled. I hate to be that guy but 8:02 those seals are the wrong way round. The way you have them, is if the bearing had a grease nipple and was backed with grease from the inside. Unless I am mistaken the bearing housing can not be pumped full of grease. The purpose of the seal, appears to be in stopping dust and dirt from damaging the bearing. In which case the seal should be flipped. In this way as dirt packs and applies pressure to the seal in will close. The way it is orientated now, pressure will cause it to open.

I think all of the videos are great I am trying to put something together that will give me 40gpm to the attachment lines of a telehandler so I can run a forestry mulcher have you ever built anything like that

Who taught you to install bearings?? Outer race is the one to tap in, not the inner. But other than that, nice work
I love watching all of your videos. In the USA, we call those "Trenchers". I've rented a few of them installing water, gas, and electrical lines. I can't wait for part two to see if this is a walk behind or ride on version. :)
I was going to call it that, but I also want it to dig trenches wider than for cables, e.g. for a concrete foundation and in this project I want to experiment a bit with hydraulic motors because I have never used them before :)

It's beautifully made, but are you sure that chain will take the torsional loading when those plates with the teeth right at the sides hit resistance?
It's too late to change it now, but I'd have thought twin chains might have been a better way to go......... Though I'm still not sure exactly what it's going to be digging in. I'm picturing the stony dirt we have around here, so if it's going to be going into something less difficult to dig, the single chain could be fine.
I hope it will last, if something needs improvement, I will definitely show it in the next video, let's hold off on the assessment for the test 😁
@@WorkshopFromScratch fair enough. I just know the "Soil" in my garden would give it trouble. It's like quarry waste mixed with clay once you get down more than 15cm.
I can still remember when I dug out fence post holes down there about 15 years back. I rented one of those petrol post augers, and the furthest it got was about 30cm before skipping around on a layer of half brick sized lumps of rock. That turned into a back breaking job REALLY quickly. 😕

Just curious - why do you use washers when attaching to the chain @13:00? I'd like to learn more - can you help me understand why a washer is needed here? Thanks!
In order to increase the clamping volume of the screw to the plate from which I made the knives, it is 6mm thick, which can cause deformations during work and making it from thicker plate will significantly increase the weight, now I am wondering whether to give even wider washers

Teeth bought ready for welding, the seller in the product description mentioned cooling the place where the widia is soldered right after welding :)

Hey dude, nice project going on and looking forward to see the whole chain excavator! But I have to point out a problem at the tip pulley you have. These bushings (spacers) you put to limit the sideways motion of the pulley go directly into the seals. But then the shaft going through doesn't have a seal with neither the holes on the welded plates nor with the bushings. If the tip pulley is going to be close to the business end of this tool it could leak...
I know there is a problem with this, but it will definitely limit the amount of earth getting into the bearing, so I won't have to change the bearings too often :)

RIP bearings! You should never hit the bearing on the inner ring when fitted on the outer. Always hit on both rings. The best is to heat up the peace and cool down the bearing.

Those bearings are weeping. You never install a bearing by hammering on the unsupported portion. E.g for these internal races you hammer on the outer portion only.
Great video but driving bearings in by the center race is really not good @ all for bearings, you really need to drive thm in with the outer race, the bearings will last longer and thank you in the end!!!

You definitely shouldn't hit the bearings in by hitting against the inner race because it puts strain on the whole inner race and all the balls.
You should rather hit bearings home against the outer race, this way none of the inner shell gets any undue shock or violence against them.🙂
You should have hammered the outer ring of the ballbearing at 4.45 otherwise the balls can get damaged. Great video.
