    12:48 it’s not explained in the movie but one of the writers said that the backstory is that when Marty was 13 he snuck into Doc’s lab. Doc had a reputation for being a weird hermit. Upon seeing Doc’s inventions, Marty was genuinely impressed and Doc was happy that someone in town actually saw him as an inventor and not some crazy guy. Marty becomes his assistant. I don’t remember if they mention it in the movies at any point but Doc pays Marty for his services so it’s a part time job, proving that when Strickland calls him a slacker it’s because he doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about. Marty is 17 in this movie so he has been working for Doc for 4 years.

    I like that Meg picked up on the finer elements of this movie--it is first-and-foremost a comedy, but it actually does do a lot of great stuff in the background--character work, explorations of kids and their parents and even a finer point about being careful about how you live your life, for your kids... or even enjoying what you have while you have it.
    Marty hated/was disappointed with his father at the beginning of the movie, but meeting him at his own age and seeing what his father was struggling with made Marty finally connect with/understand his father. And then Marty's desperate attempt to save his best friend's life with a warning--how many of us wish we had the exact same chance with someone we lost?
    Based on everything I've seen over the years, I'm pretty confident in saying that I believe BTTF is the most popular movie of all time--the only people who don't like BTTF, it seems, are people who haven't seen it yet. It's just a masterclass of filmmaking.

      I never got how it was called a comedy. It has a lot of funny moments, sure, but that's not the point of the movie at all.

    • @DocLathropBrown
      @DocLathropBrown 2 місяці тому +4

      @@TerribleEnglish Actually, it is. It's categorized as a comedy officially and everyone involved were intending to make a comedy. Eric Stoltz was fired as Marty specifically for playing it too straight.
      The thing is that not all comedies have to be completely unserious or wacky/goofy. BTTF understands this and it walks a fine line, because everyone involved in the production were firing on all cylinders.

    • @TerribleEnglish
      @TerribleEnglish 2 місяці тому

      @@DocLathropBrown I don't agree that it's a comedy, or that it should be categorized that way. I guess it doesn't fit into the basic genres of comedy, sci-fi, action, etc. Ghostbusters, Star Wars and Indiana Jones have lots of funny character moments too, but they're not comedies just because they're fun, you know.
      I mean, if someone said they wanted to put on a comedy movie, no one would suggest Back To The Future.

    Everything that happened in the beginning of the movie actually happened. There is no "time-loop" where Doc never died. He dies in the mall parking lot, and then Marty goes back in time to change everything.
    Time travel has to "start" somewhere, and the very first time that time travel happened was in the Twin Pines mall parking lot.

    • @bdc1117
      @bdc1117 2 місяці тому +4

      Time travel has to start somewhere, but it still creates unresolvable paradoxes once it occurs, certainly if you're allowed to go back and then return. Marty's impact on the future of his family would have been much greater than the movie assumes, and the new future would have been less predictable overall (if nothing else because physical interactions in nature are to a large extent effectively random and unpredictable, gene mutations for example, so a replay of the same time period starting from the exact same place would never yield the same results twice even without Marty's interference). Why would Marty's 2.0 parents not remember their encounter with him in 1955? Why would they be in the same house even? He and Doc should not have been able to assume that, once having altered future events, he could still expect Doc to be in the same parking lot at the same time by fast-forwarding there. If you can change the future by traveling to the past, then you can't also return to the original future, before time travel happened, and have it all be as though the time travel didn't happen yet, give or take a few details -- that's more like an ability to hop between parallel universes, for which you need more than a flux capacitor my friend.

      Yes, what actually happened is Marty creates a new "skewed" timeline ( like discussed in part II ) where magically his parents are very cool and understanding, Biff is 180 deg. from being the creep he was, and Marty gets his dream car, though everything else ( the story assumes ) is pretty close to his original life.
      This is when we mention this is just a comedy for fun, not a "what would time travel actually do to alter reality" type story.

    7:33 I guess I'll be the first of many to tell you that the judge at the beginning of the movie saying Marty was "too darn loud" was Huey Lewis- the Writer and Singer of the two songs in the film (the #1 Billboard chart topper at the time of the movie's release "The Power of Love," the song Marty's band was playing, and its flip-side which also did well on the charts, "Back In Time" despite not officially being released as the B side-back when records sold was how Billboard ranked songs as opposed to the streaming methods they have today. 33:16 Marty accidentally ran over one of the two pine trees at the entrance to Peabody’s farm while driving the DeLorean which is what Peabody yelled at Marty as he was shooting when he knocked out his own mailbox. I love Meg's brilliant analysis, taking the classic's premise to another level.

    5:11 think the name you're looking for is Rube Goldberg machine.
    6:20 I wanna know what in the hell was Doc actually doing here. We never come back to this once, but all the clocks are late 25 minutes. How? Why? We know the DeLorean is the time machine and he seemingly hasn't even tested it at this point and yet these clocks are some experiment too that isn't even monitoring?
    7:48 This would be Huey Lewis of Huey Lewis and the News who composed "Power of Love", the song Marty is playing. So he's saying his own song is too loud.
    19:37 Well, time travel isn't real (as far as we know), so we can only guess if there'd be two of him and nothing happens or the whole universe collapses from the time paradox alone.
    20:30 No, the house is gone. He said the time machine took his family's fortune and the very first panning shot shows he's got newspaper clippings of how his house was sold and then destroyed (more of tiny details that don't go to waste).

    So here's the details on the casting of Marty McFly. The director, Robert Zemeckis, wanted Michael J Fox for the role from the get go but Fox was on a sitcom called Family Ties and they couldnt work out scheduling so they had to look elsewhere. They got Eric Stolz. Now Stolz wasn't a bad guy or mean to the rest of the cast. He was a method actor who had just come off of an Oscar nominated drama called Mask where he played the lead role. As a method actor, Eric had to get into the character and in action scenes he had to go more real. Like he'd asked for real punches and basically treat it like a real fight. He also asked to be referred to as Marty on set. Most importantly Zemeckis just felt like Stolz wasn't landing the comedic tone the way he wanted. They shot the scene where Biff and Marty pick a fight in the school cafeteria and pretty much the beginning of the movie up until the scene at the mall. During filming of the mall scene was when Zemeckis decided to fire Stolz and at that point they went to work ironing out a schedule for Michael J Fox and they got him. They had to reshoot everything with Fox but rumor has it that they kept some shots with Stolz in the film.

    7:28 he was filming “Family Ties” when he made this movie. During the week he would go from “Family Ties” in the day then he’d be driven over to the “Back to the Future” set to film night scenes then on the weekends he’d film the day scenes. 9:00 actually only 72cents. 15:32 when I had to collect for the paper subscriptions I delivered I always enjoyed sitting with the older customers that lived in the area before most of the houses were built. 17:45 that’s Billy Zane behind Biff. 30:23 it’s interesting that they waited until their third kid to use the name Marty. 32:53 the drunk was the mayor from 1955. 33:26 cause Marty ran over a pine when leaving the farm in 1955 and for some reason he didn’t replant it. 34:06 it would’ve been just like Einstein earlier in the car. Marty just brought himself back a little earlier. 37:31 there will never be a remake or any other versions of it while Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis is alive. They’ve shot down so many scripts. I love how all three movies are so focused on the set looking very similar and in different eras the same business but different name. 40:03 I’d love to be able to go back and see my parents younger. My dad had a brain tumor before I was born and most my life he was disabled and not his strong self. He was still determined to do things but my three brothers each had a different father cause of our age difference we got him at a different point. My oldest brother got him before his tumor. My life would be drastically different if he was healthier cause he had so many plans.

However, when Stoltz didn’t work out, they managed to get Fox and work around his busy schedule to make these films, but Michael J. Fox was always their first choice to play Marty.
