Hey everyone, I've recently been dealing with health issues which unfortunately forced me to take a break from uploading. That being said, it's great to be back and I look forward to bringing you videos on a consistent basis again! I thought this would make for a very interesting video, diving a little bit deeper for once into how Naughty Dog thinks about level design of their games. I hope you'll enjoy the video, and of course you can help support me at www.Patreon.com/RobinGaming if you'd like to see me continue bringing you content like this. In return, you get early access to all my scripts and videos. Stay safe in these uncertain times!
RobinGaming Hope You’re Feeling Amazing. Love your videos. Despite of I agree or disagree at times, Your effort is amazing. Thanks for the high Tier content 👌🏾
The best things those misguided path create is the side stories you discover along the way.. especially in the last of us series.. all the journal entries and notes left behind and then the dead end and the way the level was design all tells the stories of other survivors.. in the last of us 2, there was a part where you read up on 4 runaways from the WLF, and later you enter a room, and then you think, wtf this room looks neat and tidy, and then you go up to use the work bench in that room, and the 4 runaways attack you, they’re alive, and open up other rooms to explore after killing them.. the crazier thing is you read all their names and know they’re running away from the same faction Ellie is hating. They attacked you thinking you were WLF trying to take them back.. little details like that just gives me a much deeper feeling for the world and the people in that game.. and druckman said that it wasn’t going to be a fun game, and he’s right, because then I start to actually feel bad about killing people who don’t even deserve to die, or at least die at ellies hand.. in a different cutscene, teenagers who ran away from their own town in Jackson later found in another room. Mirroring the perspective of Ellie’s town and Abby’s city.. TLoU2 did a lot of that very well.. so that’s why I never felt like I was forced to like Abby, butt it gave you more than enough evidence to empathize with the others. Naughty Dogs is the best.
I must say that this video was a hell of a lot interesting, and I'm surprised yet again with how you come up with such a brilliant topic to make a video on. With that being said, great video bro. I haven't had anything to watch on this site for a long minute and this definitely quenched my thirst. This was 100% worth the wait :)
Remember when in TLOU2 you were forced to go turn on the power in the theatre to turn on the radio, and all it was for was to get you to slap the radio and find keys underneath it, lmao.
well, i remember being forced to play a character i hated, and by the end being forced to go and kill her. After being forced to kill some dogs just to be forced to spare her. A game about moral choices where we can't choose. They could have gone for a "Detroit become human branched style" i guess. If you kill a dog = bad ending
After finding out the devastating news about the game due to the leaks, I just don’t know how to feel about NaughtyDog or Neil anymore. For 7 years, I have been invested in The Last of Us franchise, loving the story, characters, and gameplay. I have have praised Neil and everyone on the NaughtyDog team on what is said to be one of the greatest narrative based games of all time. When the sequel announcement was released, I’m not going to lie, I was a little bit skeptical. I thought the first should have been it, there was no need for a second. But as time went on and more trailers, pictures, and theories were put out, I felt confident that this game would live up to the first. I would honestly do anything to take it back. I had so much faith that this would live up to the first, and possibly make it better, if that’s somehow possible. I feel sick to my stomach; never in a million years would I think this story would go this that way. This is like a shot to the stomach not only to us supporters of this game/game developer, but to the gaming community as a whole. This had the potential to be one of the greatest games of this decade, and instead we’re getting something that is possibly the worst outcome that could ever be thought of. There is no point of getting angry about it, the damage is already done. But it’s ok to be upset and disappointed. I’m not saying the fans were expecting heartfelt moments or a happy ending, it’s an apocalyptic game for god sakes. There wasn’t a happy ending in the first. But I can vouch for more than half the fan base on this one: we wanted a story that is Ellie and Joel. Obviously other characters can be introduced and it still be a great game, but the whole premise of ‘THE LAST OF US’ is about the story between Ellie and Joel, and their father-daughter relationship. THAT is what we fell in love with. THAT is what we were looking forward to. And instead we get this? I want to apologize for saying that the people who originally said that the game did not need a sequel and that it would only ruin in the long run back in 2016 needed to be optimistic and stop being negative about a great thing. I also want to apologize to Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker. I bet when they were reading the scripts that thought it was some kind of sick joke. They really put their heart and soul into these roles, and they most likely did in this game also. Like I said last year about Emilia Clarke, they did the best with what they were given. Speaking of Emilia Clarke, I also want to apologize to the GOT fans that I made fun of for being upset about the ending, this is my karma. Oh, and the employees working at NaughtyDog. They more than likely had no say in the story at all, they were just doing there jobs. I’m not goin to get into the whole ‘crunching’ situation, but it must suck to have something you have been working on for years be leaked to the public like that. Well, I already typed to much and you probably stopped reading by now, but a few more things. 1. NEIL WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!!!!???? What in your right mind would have possessed you to write a narrative like this? What in your right mind would have you think the fans would enjoy this? I truly want to know. I have been reading about the SJW/feminist things about him for years, but I would have never thought he would go THIS far. I’m a young woman and I’m all for women empowerment, but this is fucking ridiculous. After this game releases to the public fully, I’m curious to know what will happen to Neil. Will he be fired (probably not)? Will he quit because of the immense hate this game will surely get? Will he move to mars? I don’t know, but I am worried for the future of NaughtyDog. 2. I will not likely not play the game, or watch someone play. I don’t physically think I can take it, I feel sick to my stomach already. I know I will see clips and pictures but I honestly will scroll right past them. I just can’t believe it. I have never had a game that I was looking forward to be completely outed like this. This honestly feels like a nightmare. At first I felt bad that someone leaked this game, but now that i’m typing this, I realize this was probably for the best. I hate to say it but it’s true. Maybe we’ll be surprised and not think this is a dumpster fire of game. Maybe we will be pleased (somewhat). All I know for sure is: I am disappointed beyond measure. In my book, at least so far, The Last of Us 2 does not exist. Thank you for listening to my TED talk.
@CYYLEE No one has even played the game. It's fine to form an opinion by reading something...but no one knows how the game plays, the scene that haven't leaked or what this video talks about, level design. Yes, it looks like the game has an agenda but we still don't know everything.
Anthony McNeil You’re right. When I was typing this, I was highly pissed off and very annoyed, so my thoughts are the result of that. I guess we all shouldn’t state an opinion before playing the game, but it just seems like the narrative presented from the leaks gives a great prospect to what the game will be about. At the end of the day, you are right. I guess I shouldn’t judge a book by its leaks. Thank you for your response, stay safe out there.
Neil Druckmann already indicated that they would incorporate some open world / side quests into Part II. I hope they ditch the idea -- I think it would harm the formula and atmosphere of The Last of Us
I want to like your comment and bring it to a round 100... But I got 99 problems and your like ain't one Edit: shit someone liked your comment and made it have 100 likes...
Darius Gross I disagree, I think evolution is necessary in a series. Just look at the Uncharted Series. A semi-open world would be pretty goddamn amazing imo
"There are no coincidences, only the illusion of coincidences." - V for Vendetta Great video as usual Robin. A subtle yet crucial aspect of game design explored well with an interesting perspective.
Your illustration over this video was nothing short of absolute perfection. Just listening to you describe the settings with such accurate syncronisation as the video was playing along with your choice of words and sentences being easy to understand and at the same time, fully encompasing the scene was incredibly satisfying. In the first 30 seconds of the video I was locked in because of how little of my time you wasted (if at all) and the sheer amount of information you let me process efficiently. Thank you so much for making this video.
This is an excellent video. First time finding your channel. High effort, very informative. Way to suck me into a 20 minute video on older games that I've played all the way through multiple times. Truly enjoy and appreciate different perspectives like this. Earned my sub without a doubt.
Olivier Pineau red dead is great, a far funner and narratively superior game to some of naughty dogs games like the last of us and uncharted:drakes fortune. Uncharted 2 and 3 are great though and funner for me to play.
Uncharted 4 still is the most beautiful game iv ever played. It still amazes me every time I look at the gameplay. The visual is on another level and no other PS4 games can match.
The writing in these videos is simply amazing. Gets the point across while still sounding like a human being and not a someone that feels they need to sound as smart as possible by using words no one normally uses in their daily lives. You’re the best Robin!
you should make a video about how you were right about naughty dogs agenda and about the recent leaks. just saw that comment about your health, get well soon.
I come back to these games at least once a year. I recently bought a Vita just to play Golden Abyss. I love gaming and will never love any series more than Uncharted.
Wow this actually was a revealing video for me. I guess naturally I was going the way the color told me to go, but never realized it. You really did well covering every point of level design man. Naughty dog never fails to blow my mind haha. I think the reason I love uncharted 4 so much was because it felt so natural and I really felt like I was on a true adventure. I hope the ps5 offers a 60fps single player option. Good job
What puzzles me about this TLOU2 mess, is how they can think we'd WANT a game that they admitted isn't "fun". Reality is bleak enough these days because of the pandemic. Fun is what most of us really need right now, not the abysmal and depressing mess they've created.
Wow I’ve never really thought about the level design on games in general. We just go toward pathways instinctively, and it’s cool showing how naughty dog and others show us our way on the games.
I have ocd and i have this problem of scanning every single inch of the map in linear games, as games are becoming more open ended these days, its more difficult for me to enjoy them. The first part you talked about in the video, i skipped the obvious staircase as i thought its the progression path and i scanned the room and entered the door in search for treasure. Watching people play video games makes me realise how an average person plays linear games and it reminds me of how i used to play video games before ocd. Thanks for making this video !
This trick can be used in communication too. I purposefully make calculated statements in my presentations that do make sense but raise more questions than they answer; just so that my audience would ask the questions I want them to ask.
I love how naughty dog never tells you exactly where to go if you don't use hints, sometimes they give you a long term destination like in the last of us
Bro at one point I started crying because I remembered all the memories of all the games that I have played and started remembering all the good moment's the beautiful places games lead u to with your favorite character and everything. Like some ppl will just ''speedrun'' a game without noticing all the work and effort devs put in a game or even a level, ppl should really like go back to a game and replay it and they'll see what I'm talking about and maybe even enjoy the game more than the first playthrough. And now that COVID-19 is here you have a chance to replay some of your favorite games. Anyway Robin please keep up the good work as always and stay safe friend.
Yes, they are so good at deciding your decisions, in fact, that they now have moved on from merely leading you inconspicuously through their game levels, to steering you in the direction of becoming a better, more accepting person, in real life. The only thing you need to do, apparently, after having paid the price of admission, of course, is to bludgeon a couple of characters you care deeply about. Pure genius.
They're trying to sneak a sermon into a game: _"Greetings Fellow Gamers! Today we're going to learn why hate is bad. . . "_ (Then they make a game that would've made me hate Naughty Dog if I hadn't seen the links and cancelled.)
I always rotate my camera 360 degress and find whatever way possible in order to proceed to next path, to find secret collectibles or to find consumable in any RPG games I have played. I have intensively played games like RE4, God of War 1 to 3, DMC 3 in my childhood so they just taught me to do that and that habit gotten into with me ever since. When I find two or multiple paths I could go, I always follow my intuition and proceed, if the chosen path seems and feels like the right path to forward the game I back up and go to the other paths that I left. I advise you keep this as a habit when you play games, it will always reward you.
This is one of the only UA-cam videos where the adverts are actually placed in natural pauses in your narration and don’t completely break up the flow of the video
U4 still beyond a lot of recent games in every aspect. I should get around getting the Platinum but I was waiting to see if it would ever come with a 60fps patch
And even players who noticed the opening before going up the stairs might tend to go up each side of the staircase before going through the opening because the opening is clearly to a different room. Players, particularly of games like Uncharted that sometimes like to deliberately disorient or momentarily annoy you, often know that one-way routes are often included - e.g. some debris will fall behind you or the floor will collapse. Some of that is for cinematic purpose, some for story purpose (the game makers wouldn't necessarily want you to ALWAYS be able to backtrack an ENTIRE massive level, breaking up flow), and sometimes perhaps for memory/performance reasons. You learn from this to explore everything in the immediate vicinity before moving on, if seeing every nook and cranny and treasure is important to you (it is to me).
Man, I remember watching your videos on the Uncharted 3 TV when in a lobby. I'm glad youtube recommended me this video as I would always skip through to see your videos back on U3
A-1 ANGEL Uncharted is great, but the last of us has to be the most overrated game I’ve ever played(I like it) and I don’t really understand the excitement for the second game.
Hey Robin, this is the first video of yours I've watched in YEARS. back when I used to watch your videos, they weren't the best quality. I just wanted to commend you, this video is pure GOLD. Top tier quality content. THANK YOU
Truly insightful. I did notice some of these techniques in later NaughtyDog games, but some I really missed thinking I was stupid, like some exits I never see.
I've been replaying Uncharted 4 recently, and noticed a lot of the things you so perfectly point out in this video. Excellent analysis. It's telling how they never give you objective markers in the UI, instead the environment itself acts like a kind of diegetic UI of its own. It feels like you're being inventive in how you move through the space, when in reality ND are carefully constructing that experience for you, like the Wizard behind the curtain. I noticed it a lot in the rooftop segment of the Italian heist level. The rooftops seem labyrinthine at first glance, but if you just stop and look around for a few seconds, it's simple enough to intuit where you need to go. It was especially smart how enemy flash lights almost "point" you towards the optimal path, while also giving you an in-game "vision cone" to make the rules of stealth easily understood.
That said, it would be interesting to see how a non-gamer reacts to an Uncharted 4 playthrough. A lot of environmental cues make sense to gamers who have an in-built understanding of the "visual grammar" of video games. But someone without that implicit knowledge of "videogame logic" might find the lack of UI pointers to be discomfiting. Or maybe they would step up to the task and respond to the environmental challenges in a more "human" way, using their own intuition to figure out that "pipes are for climbing and ledges are for shimmying", etc. Rather than doing those things just because years of videogame logic dictated that it should be thus.
I have been watching this guy since uncharted 2 multiplayer why does he only have 161k subs this shows the man is so underrated people need to notice him
Awesome video. Naughty dawg are extremely gifted in story telling. Hearing you say "spend a few more hours with characters you love" hit me hard. I grew up with this franchise and it will always be very special to me. I am excited for TLOU2 and the journey that awaits.
Tabbarn solid 30fps, yeah. The graphics are impressive though, can’t wait to see what there games look like on the ps5. I’m not a fan of linear story games that are what naughty dog is putting out and other exclusives are copying(god of war, death stranding) but goddamn they make some very visually impressive games.
I get really sad when I remember that they're not real people and they're fiction and that the drake story will never come back it's just so nostalgic it makes you wish to have a memory wipe and experience it again.
Fr. RDR2 is the only game where I had the same feeling about the characters and story as I did when playing Uncharted. Also I didn't notice your name until after I typed this
Super video! I first played The Last Of Us, then Uncharted 4 then finished Uncharted 3 a couple of days ago. I have come to the conclusion that whatever Naughty Dog make is absolute gold! I couldn't put my finger on why I felt this way but the games are so immersive. Uncharted 4 is like going on holiday several times around the world!
I have gotten the platinum for every Uncharted game but everytime I watch a video of yours and it shows Uncharted and you talk about it, it makes me go back and play all the games again lol I really hope this series never ends, unfortunately I know it has to end at some point. This will forever be my all time favorite series because it connects with me on a whole different level
Wow, I don't think I ever put much thought into the actual level design. Amazing video. Especially had a good laugh at the first example you gave, as I still remember it when I played it myself. I'm very excited for Naughty Dogs future.
Great video, Robin! I prefer these higher quality, well written videos to more frequent videos of lower quality. You made the right choice with your channel.
Edd BOI I mean it’s an ND game😂it’s a linear game and also that’s the point that doctor wouldn’t move so you’re only choice was to kill him it is what it is🤷🏻♂️
Hi Robin, I know it's been a while since you're back, but I want to say a huge thank you for your incredible hard work and one of the highest gaming 'documentarys' i've ever seen. I watch your videos for a couple of years now, and it's a pleasure every time. Keep up the great work man and stay healthy. Greetings to you!
Hey, hopefully you are not affected by spoilers like me. But having seen it now, and unfortunately if you have too, I would love to hear your take on this issue. It absolutely breaks my heart💔
me too man.....me too.......i waited so long for the game...i originally didnt have the ps4..but when i found out that they were doing a sequel..and judging how good it was watching pewdiepie play the original one...i straight away bought one...but instead of a great sequal..im introduced to this shit show
I saw 90 minutes of spoilers and it's an absolute shit show. The first two hours of the game decide whether I'll play it or not and so far it looks lame.
I've always said that Naughty Dog's level design was a step ahead of most, i never used the map once in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy despite the fairly open ended world, i always felt guided the right way without feeling like my hand was being held.
@@CorwinTheOneAndOnly yeah i'm afraid tlou2 and naughtydogg are both a lost cause aswell. I don't ever think of soneone as being worth less than any other person. But for sjw's i'm willing to make an exception. They are honestly the real human garbage. Ruining literally everything

@@eyas6943 we're not saying that we decide what's in a game. We're saying we decide if we buy a game based on what's in it, and if the devs understand why we choose not to buy it, maybe they'll make a game that isn't so disrespectful next time.
Honestly and I say this without a shadow of a doubt, the content you produce makes you the best youtuber. Pure passion, elegance and grace. This video had me hooked. Ladies and gentlemen, we have found our Christopher Nolan of video games. Naughty Dog should definitely hire you, as I'm sure you'll give Neil Druckmann a run for his money.
Another thing I noticed while playing uncharted was how the game actually loads and unloads different sections of an episode. Either a huge rock falls down behind you blocking the entrance you've just entered, or Nathan falls down from a ledge giving you an impression of cinematic action. You could jump out of a one way window, making it impossible to go back. Meanwhile the game actually unloads the previous section and loads the next. Quite clever!
Thank you for the amazing video! I have just picked up the game again two weeks ago, after not playing it for several years. It's been the first time, that I have been stunned over and over again while playing, by a game, that I have already played through before and was released several years back. A true masterpiece! Usually when you play a video game you(your brain) start unconsciously or consciously finding the flaws of the game, so you can start ignoring/accepting them. Like in Assassin's Creed when it just looks unnatural/weird when you ride the horse over uneven terrain. You only really care in the beginning, but then your brain accepts it and you forget about it. But the flaw is still there! What keeps stunning me in Uncharted 4, is that my brain constantly looks for these flaws, as it usually does when playing a video game, but it just can't find them. It's incredible! I've never had this experience before. It's like: "That waterfall will surely look ugly from close distance - oh no, it looks great", "oh that's surely gonna be a boring cut scene - oh no it isn't, it's not even a cut scene!", "with that car I'm surely gonna be weirdly stuck in some rocks sometime - oh no, never was the case", "now the story is gonna be boring - oh no, it was actually better than in many movies", "now I'm just gonna pull that guy from the cliff like I've done it several times before - oh sh**! He's holding on to my foot! What to do?!" Often games have good stories, but then just ok graphics, or amazing graphics, but lack good mechanics. Uncharted 4 was the first game where I really have a hard time finding any flaws in any category. (surely there are a few minor ones, but minor...) Graphics - stunning, revolutionary! Story - a game never made tears running from my eyes before! Mechanics - Many of them, many variations of them and very well executed! level design - So interestingly designed you don't even realise you're in a level(as seen in this video)! Animations - fluent, dynamic! Camera movement - revolutionary! And all of it just combined perfectly! And the craziest thing: It was released 4 years ago. Wow! that's a long text! Sorry if that comment is not directly about the video. But your video just made me love the game even more and triggered all my thoughts that have piled up in the last two weeks to come out. :)) Thank you for the video!
Uncharted 4 is my favorite game of all time, I have played it so many times that I don't even know how many times I have actually played it. I do hope that they make a game with Nate's daughter and maybe make another game that is a bit longer with Chloe and Nadine
I had this in my watch later for 2 days so i could watch this with my full attention all at once and after seeing in the comments you've been sick and that caused your break I want to say, Robin you came back with what i think is your best video!! I am a huge fan of what you do and one day I wish I could make content as well thought out as you. Good job, great vid!
Another awesome video. This is why i love Robin , he does upload lesser videos compared to other UA-camrs but whenever he does he delivers . Many people after a certain amount of time run out of ideas and start to upload vids which are repetitive , but not Robin. His videos are based on a simple topic and yet they turn out to be so interesting. Keep it up man 👍
@@Jho1 uncharted 3 is my personal favourite I like the sense of going on an adventure to me. Id say 1 is the worst because of the outdated shooting plus I uh have the platinum trophy for all five games and played all the games multiple times lmao I'd say I'm quite the """""real fan"""""
Ah, good old Naughty Dog Yellow! But really, I have rewatched GMT's video on level design countless times because I love these specific things ND does to guide players. This is my favorite kind of video. Thanks, Robin.
I've been conflicted for a while about making content about games that I love. But when I see how u create videos like this, it gives me some hope for my ideas. Keep up the great work 👍
You reminded me why the Uncharted series was and will for ever be my favourite ever. The moment Nate's daughter opened the shelf I re-lived all of the stories by looking at those artifacts and it brought tears to my eyes, again. Uncharted 4 is the only game in the series i played only once, because it made me cry because it was over. Hopefully we'll get some prequels with sam or sully or sequels with her daughter because such an amazing series cannot be lost for ever.
It's simple, really. If at any point, a part of the plot can be swapped out for more progressive stuff without damaging the overarching story, Naughty Dog will take that path and make you walk it. I mean, why else would they shoehorn a cringeworthy long kiss in the trailer, if it wasn't specifically for brownie points from The Media™?

I didn’t think this game would be as good as the original, but damn I didn’t know it could be this bad.
CYYLEE you’re right
Sep 0704 exactly
Can’t wait for The Last of Us Part 2 and how the narrative expands the level design
yeah!!!
Neil Druckmann already indicated that they would incorporate some open world / side quests into Part II. I hope they ditch the idea -- I think it would harm the formula and atmosphere of The Last of Us
Darius Gross it’s always good to have a change of pacing and atmosphere so the player doesn’t get bored

Darius Gross I disagree, I think evolution is necessary in a series. Just look at the Uncharted Series. A semi-open world would be pretty goddamn amazing imo

Great video as usual Robin.

The writing in these videos is simply amazing. Gets the point across while still sounding like a human being and not a someone that feels they need to sound as smart as possible by using words no one normally uses in their daily lives. You’re the best Robin!

THE NAUGHTY DOG AGENDA.
Your PROPHECY hath come TRUE.
Naughty Dog indeed has an inclination to making you think a certain way in their games. Sadly, not always with the best of intentions...

I love how naughty dog never tells you exactly where to go if you don't use hints, sometimes they give you a long term destination like in the last of us
I'm eagerly waiting for the TLoU Part II review. It's gonna be brutally honest and I'm 100% here for it.

Today we're going to learn why hate is bad. . . "_
(Then they make a game that would've made me hate Naughty Dog if I hadn't seen the links and cancelled.)
Welcome Back Robin!! Also stay safe!
Thanks man, you too!
Very interesting, I've played through every Uncharted at least 4 times and didn't realize some of these techniques to tell me where to go
I always rotate my camera 360 degress and find whatever way possible in order to proceed to next path, to find secret collectibles or to find consumable in any RPG games I have played. I advise you keep this as a habit when you play games, it will always reward you.

you actually might be in luck with ps5!
I‘ve been in your Uncharted 3 Montages and its great to see that you are still making videos and how greatly the quality has improved

what an ironic time to pop up in my feed
A coinciddence
I'm watching this today and can't count how many times I missed exploring the areas in tlou2 because I keep triggering the cutscenes on accident
Really well-made video once again! The quality is something you rarely see on UA-cam.

Tabbarn solid 30fps, yeah. The graphics are impressive though, can’t wait to see what there games look like on the ps5.
Another of Robin's video that aged very well after the ending of TLOU2 lol
What to do?!"
Often games have good stories, but then just ok graphics, or amazing graphics, but lack good mechanics.
