@@SquallSZ The first game isn’t terrible by any means but “superb”? Come on.. Playing Uncharted 1 back in 2007 was like being from the 1700s and driving the dopest horse carriage possible. I remember back in the day i had never played Uncharted 1 before. But i heard many good things about it, like it was ahead of its time in many ways. I am not surprised it got a sequel. One thing that really blew me away was the reloading. How Nate would pull out one magazine, throw in on the ground and put another one in, and you could still see the magazine on the ground. It was mindblowing.
Uncharted always gets shit over this. But almost any other action game has hundreds of kills in them, usually against other humans or sentient life at least. And the characters in those games just carry on like it was nothing too.
@@abovewater6918 the difference is that the characters in Uncharted are presented as friendly regular people that go on an adventure. They are the kind of people that could be your neighbours. Most other action games present their characters as soldiers or survivors or something like that and therefore we expect them to be fine with killing. It's a big difference in tone and storytelling.
When you think about it, Uncharted is a strange series. I can't decide on whether to fixate on how backwards the first game feels in retrospect, or how insane it is that the sequel surpassed it so effortlessly and quickly, ultimately becoming more timeless than arguably even the other games in the series.

I'm playing through Uncharted one right now, a year later, and I remember seeing this back when it was released and thinking "oh, it can't be THAT bad in terms of clunkiness". It absolutely is. I share Bricky's astonishment that this ever got a sequel.
@Nottheguyyouthinkitis I played on the third highest difficulty setting, you over-aggressive, easily-offended moron. I've 100%'d both Nioh Games, Sekiro, and Sifu. Hard games are not the issue. The issue is that the first Uncharted game has combat controls that are in their infancy compared to what they'd become later. Enemies spawn in massive numbers, are pinpoint-accurate if you're out of cover, the weapons aren't well-balanced, the melee "extra ammo" kills are wonky to execute, and a good bit of the platforming is a trial-and-error chore. The game is clunky. It doesn't mean I didn't enjoy playing it, but it means it's far from a smooth experience.

Bricky's shift into a narrative/gaming variety channel is one of the greatest things I've witnessed with a channel on UA-cam. Hope to see you explore more things you're interested in my guy.
The best thing I can give the combat is the divine gift of shoulder swapping, the sheer number of games that would be improved if I could switch my bloody shoulder are just... it's a game play feature that more 3rd person shooters need. I only know if two with it, uncharted as a whole, and the Transformers war for cybertron series.
Raiders of the Lost Ark came out when I was in high school and it became my favorite movie of all time. When I saw Uncharted was coming out, I bought a PS3 "for my kids". I loved everything about it because it showcased the last revolutionary jump in console performance - PS2 to PS3. And I was playing Raiders! Flaws? Sure, but for the most part, it was everything I wanted in a game. I've replayed U1 many times. I forgive all the faults because of how much I loved it when I played it the first time. Except when they killed Eddy and his sorry mob.
@@tigerbytegames bro i had someone play it for me cause i was scared i was so young 😭😭 but i re played the game and was like bruh i was really scared of this but ngl i was still shitting myself 😭😭😭
man I loved the jetsky segment as a kid, having infinite ammo with a grenade launcher with the caveat of the difficulty of controlling the jetsky without dying, man I just cant help myself, I love uncharted one since I was a kid in 2007
Even after 15 years, I’ll still love the existence and the experience Uncharted gave me. I was crazy enough to beat the first three games on Crushing difficulty on both the PS3 and PS4, and decided to just finish it on normal in the fourth installment. The games have their flaws, like that teeth grinding jet ski segment or the big, burly Shambala guardians in 2, but that still won’t stop me from loving them.
I played this game for the first time in 2020. I had actually played Uncharted 4 already, so I thought I knew what to expect, and I was so wrong. Uncharted 1 is now one of only two games I’ve played where j can remember finishing it and thinking “I never want to play that again” (the other was AC Odyssey lol). Part of it was the freaky zombie things. They honestly gave me nightmares. But mostly it was the absolutely infuriating combat and jet ski sequences that made me want to jump off my apartment building
I found it enjoyable even after all these years. Even the gun play wasn't that bad for me personally. I even beat it on brutal, which I suggest not doing unless you love to spawn and die in one spot for an hour then maybe dead eye dick misses his shot giving you the chance to shoot him first. My biggest gripe is the melee combat and of course the jet ski parts. The zombies is the best part and in my opinion the best supernatural part in the entire series. UN2 guardians were cool but they didn't give me the feeling that the zombies did and the UN3 hallusionan was weak in my opinion. I am surprised you didn't mention how the MP40 has 35 rounds in the mag instead of 32.
I wouldn't put myself through that but I do agree that the combat honestly was decent in this. Getting accurate with the gun wasn't really difficult and I usually am not the greatest when it comes to gunplay. Usually average
Yeah the guns are how i remember each game has its own feel and it still felt comfortable for me after not playing it for years. The first one opened my young mind up, love this game.
Uncharted 1 to the rest of the series is like when you buy a new mattress and pillows, and the first night or so it's super uncomfortable because the memory foam hasn't expanded out from being frozen and compressed from being delivered, but by the end of the week you see why you got it and no longer question your purchase.
I’m about 60% of the way through the game, and the combat is killing my will to finish the game. I’ve had these games digitally for a few years now, and I’m finally giving them a shot. This game is lucky that it’s relatively short.
I remember watching my dad play this when I was about 7 and he kicked me out cuz it "wasn't for me". But now about 7 years later I've played almost all of the uncharted series. Really great video, thx 4 the nostalgia.
I just started Uncharted 1 this morning and finishing up now. This dude is 100% spot on, he has me laughing everytime he talks too. New sub you’re a classic.
We need a prequel with sir Francis drake that ends with a difficult section of him having to wipe out his crew and have it end with a cliff hanger where he accepts the duty of protecting the cursed treasure.
yeah i agree uncharted 1 kinda sucks compared to 2, 3 and 4, however without it we wouldnt have these in the first place so im glad uncharted 1 exists.
Playing 1 made me angry sometimes, but playing 3 was just sad all the way through. My disc was damaged I guess and the game froze right near the final boss. Couldn't be bothered to even watch the ending on UA-cam
@@Bodwaizer play it again. My only problem with it is that it's story was so similar to uncharted 2. Other than that it's great and my favorite in the series
It wasn't a curse, it was a mind affecting fungus. The Last of Us is the alternate timeline where Nate Fails to keep the sarcophagus from leaving the island. So it was kind of an extended demo.
Except the el Dorado curse doesnt create the type of fungal cordyceps infection you see in the last of us. It's just a rancid mummy stench that makes anyone who smells it go mad XD
I 100% agree. I have a lot of Nostalgia for Uncharted 1 cause I played it back in 2009/2010 when I was very young. But after playing the sequels when the collection came out, playing Uncharted 1 again feels so bad
I have played Uncharted 2 and 3 DOZENS of times and have memorized the games front to back. Some of my favorite games from my childhood. I have played Uncharted 1 once. Never again.
It’s actually a good game. At the time of its release I’d never experienced anything like it before. The vibrant colors and beautiful visuals were in complete opposition to what games looked like then. The characters were filled with such personality, and Drake voicing what the audience was thinking in scenes was very special. It was the kind of game you wished would gain the attention to further expand its world for a sequel. I often replay this game for the memories, and often consider this a major transition point in narrative games. It’s still special as a work of art, be it dated or not
It’s interesting to hear someone who’s opinions on Uncharted 1 are so different to mine. I have to say I have always, and will always love Drake’s Fortune with all my heart. I have never found myself having any problems with the shooting, that being said, the jet ski is… yep it’s bad, but generally I enjoy the gameplay. I’ve beaten Drake’s Fortune more times than any other Uncharted game due to its short length and nostalgia factor, even beating it on crushing. While Drake’s Fortune isn’t my fav Uncharted game, I still prefer it to Uncharted 3, a game which I don’t enjoy that much. I look forward to the rest of your Uncharted reviews!
The gameplay is dated and is janky today, but this guy really is just extra shit at the game. He’s having trouble shooting? I can land headshots for fun in this game and I still play the PS3 version lol. The remaster (the one he’s playing) has improved controls!
@@unr8ted77 yeah honestly, i can think of some games with extra janky controls and uncharted definitely doesnt come to mind. Deadzone and sensitivity is pretty solid so i can pretty easily land headshots. Unlike resident evil revelations where the deadzones are terrible and the sensitivity is too linear. Still land a decent amount of headshots tho lol
If you compare this game with Number 4, they are so different. Like Nate goes from curses and zombies to just regular treasure hunting with basic people.
This entries combat does appear difficult but i retried it after a couple years and after running through this on crushing and a couple of speed-runs later you learn the quarks of it. For example run-and-gun has god tier levels of aim assist to the point where i found myself using it in tight space instead of melee (especially with the shotgun). Melee and bullets multiply damage so blasting 2 enemies from far away then running up and finishing em off with a punch works surprisingly well. You can stun enemies for a brief second with one shot and use that time to fight them then move to a new bit of cover. Dodge rolling works for every enemy type not just the laser ones. IDK Maybe I just do well inspite of the bad combat.
Got a lot of inspiration from this video to go back in time and dust off the ps3 to play uncharted 1 and... oh my god just like bricky said it isnt what i remembered! But the sense of achievement i got after finishing it on crushing for the first time mind you was amazing! Reminded of the ps2 days where the harder the game was in terms of mechanics and gunplay etc rewarded me with more satisfaction than a game that holds your hand the whole way through, Keep bringing the videos Bricky! Sending love from the UK ❤
17:06 I love this whole previous minute where he's making this jogging motion while criticizing this section of the game. It's so fucking funny, I love it.
Uncharted 4 being above the others is especially apparent in that a casual audience who hasn't heard of Uncharted can enjoy the fourth entry in isolation without knowing the characters before. It's that well-written and self-contained that you just click with it. You don't really have to experience the other games to get invested in Nate and friends. Any exposition from prior games, they still tell you in an unintrusive way in 4. Neat, writers. You did well.
I love how things are working out for ya man, I sincerely hope the trend continues. I'd be stoked to see a Metal Gear essay, or, like, some other series I personally like that you'll have to develop mind reading powers to know about, then play the whole series and agree with everything I agree with..so..yeah man awesome video!
I'm rarely so impressed after a single video, but I'm so glad I came across your channel: your humour and comedic timing alongside the editing is top-notch. I already look forward to seeing the rest of your stuff! That aside, it's an apt retrospective of 1. I haven't played it since I've first done so, and you highlight its main problems rather well. The absence of Sully for most of the game hurts, and after having played 3 first, I'm to this surprised they did it again in 2. So in retrospect, I suppose that, at the end of the day, I'm just glad this one exists lol
Don't forget to note that Gabriel Roman is voiced by Simon Templeman, a huge veteran in the industry that voice Raziel in the Legacy of Kain (Soul Reaver) series. A series that was directed and designed by Amy Hennig, who also directed the uncharted series. Nice video! I played this game first hand this past year (got a lot of homework to do, yeah) and I agree with you: the shooting parts suck 70% of the time. They didn't really invest that much in polishing those mechanics as in face expression (that is, still today, brutal)
I love the Uncharted games, actually played them before I touched anything Tomb Raider but the weird thing I got to say too is that I played them backwards for most of the series. I got 3 first and then played 2 and one after I loved 3. It was interesting seeing the game regress but still understanding how it started out and while 1 is maybe not that awesome today I got a huge weak spot for 2. That damn train, man.
OMG I haven't played this game in over two years, and I played the first 4 by order mind you, and I STILL instantly remembered that Jet Ski section you showed. Truly traumatic
I remember laughing my ass off at Drake saying "this time *I'll* drive" to Elena. Like bro she was driving full speed while near a legion of cliffs in a jungle and under the machine gun fire from multiple foes, and she did great. And the motivation and courage of characters in Uncharted 1 just flips constantly honestly
its funny that was exactly my thought after finishing that game, I had played the rest first so it was clear this was just a meh thing that needed to happen so we can get the actual good games
i always find realy coool how uncharted made sir francis drake a man who had a moral compass, and would rather save the world rather than be famous, and they did it twice! they raly made sir francis drake an unsong hero and i love it
I think most of these problems stem from the fact that you don't enjoy the game's combat system. I personally enjoyed it and maybe that's why I actually liked the 1st entry more than the 3rd one. That being said game II and IV are much better.
Agreed. Uncharted 3 is the worse game in the series imo and people think I'm insane when I say that. I just find it so forgettable and a step down from Uncharted 2. If I was to rank the main entries it'd be 1.Among Thieves 2.A Thief's End 3.Drakes Fortune 4.Drakes Deception
Guess for 2007 it's so good, especially when you're a child 😂 Kinda sad that we probably will never get game like Uncharted ever again. Especially seeing Naughty Dog like this nowadays
I did remember both the names of Roman and Navarro, quite liked them as villains myself despite them being on the shallow end (granted, Roman's first name eluded me) though Eddie was clearly the best villain in the first game. Shame that he (most likely) died to never return. Not really enough villains of that archetype anymore.
Great video. Interesting take. I love the Uncharted series and I'm definitely in the minority but the first one is my favourite. I personally feel the sense of mystery and history was bigger here.
This review is very on point. Your biggest enemy in this game aren't the guys shooting at you. But dealing with the awful controls. And yeah, this game has no balance. But the biggest insult of all is that this doesn't even feel like a proper introduction to the series. You can completely skip this game lore wise because It feels like another generic Nathan Drake adventure.
This series was one of my autistic brother's fixations for years and sadly I never got to enjoy the series. However, I can enjoy your thoughts on the series instead cause damn your content is wonderful :D
Also can we talk about how when Nate finds Frances body, he drops the ring, which is rlly funny considering the plot of the 3rd game cause it’s like the most important thing ever lol
I have always been the weirdo guy that hold my controller with a claw grip. I've never had problems with uncharted 1 when it comes to moving and shooting at the same time, though I do agree it does feel clunky. But, I got used to it pretty quickly personally.
21:30 i always love how drake tries to save eddie, and like, one thing i LOVE about the uncharted universe, is this feeling off "tried to kill this guy today, tomorrow were cool" is like the meaning of "its just business" troughout all of the unchated series we see a lot of backstabbing and turnarounds, but also the characters usuly have some respect for one another, like, if both of them survived this and saw each other 5 years latter it woud just be like seeing an old friend, even tough you tried to kill each other, it reminds me a lot of pirates of the caribean, jack and barbosa are always backstabbing each other, but at the end of the day, like it or not, they are friends, friends who kinda hate each other, but still friends
I play the Uncharted series at least once a year because they are my all-time favorite games by miles. Of course you can't beat the first time experience of a good story game but every time i play them i get blown away because it speaks to me in a way i can't really describe. But i see your and other peoples point. For me It's like having an old protection dog, for other people he might seem weak now but i still see the beast in him like he was in his prime
I'm excited to see your vids on the whole series. Being someone who only recently also got a PS5 and played through all mainline games for the first time, this videohelps broaden my perspective on the games. I'm interested to see how my blind playthroughs and first time experiences stack up to someone who's played them before and is now revisiting them.
I absolutely love the Uncharted games, even now. They are my favourite games, and I think UC1 hold a strong place in my heart because it was the first game I ever played on console.
I’m sorry to say this like this but did you write your scripts while watching Joseph Anderson’s video I decided to rewatch them and this feels criminal
My first time playing the series was the PS4 remasters so I never got to enjoy the game when it first released and I can imagine at the time it would have been mind blowing. I just replayed it and found it so frustrating this time... I couldn’t count the amount of times I missed a ledge and jumped to my death, got killed because the cover controls were are so off, and accidentally rolled off a cliff. And I played on easy mode… My feeling is it’s a GREAT game that has not aged well. The jump in quality in Uncharted 2 is huge.
Guys I think my game is glitched instead of the enemies saying “shoot to kill” they yell “Skyrim belongs to the Nords!” And run at me with a sword anyone know how to fix this?
Played for the first time ever on ps plus, and boy was it tedious. The enemies have auto lock-on aim to hit you no matter what, the same generic gun battles over and over was exasperating and clonky mechanicshere and there😂. I finished the 1st game just to say i did it, but I couldn't play the other 2 in the trilogy. Playing on hard difficulty was just murder and too time consuming to progress and finish the game.

Same. I didn’t try the first game until I was older just to try and beat heart of the vault, the bunker, and unwanted guests.
Coincidentally, I just picked up the Nathan Drake collection the other day on the PS4 and playing the first one I have to agree with everything you say, especially the combat and I played on easy difficulty. Don't think I'll try again on explorer or anything harder. But, It's a small price to play to get to Uncharted 2.
Going from uncharted 1 to 2 is like going from a fiat to a Ferrari
No. Its like going from a vanilla ferrari to a super customized and calibered ferrari. The first game was superb
@@SquallSZ The first game isn’t terrible by any means but “superb”? Come on..
Playing Uncharted 1 back in 2007 was like being from the 1700s and driving the dopest horse carriage possible. Then Uncharted 2 came along and it was like being transported into the modern times and given a free Lambo for life.
Lol had to play the game on the hardest difficulty for platinum. Was not a fun time, ended up learning speedrun strats just to skip annoying parts.
@@sexylightskinboah I learned how to shoot through walls almost near the end of the game
It’s incredibly questionable how Elena and other causal characters take so easy to murdering tens to hundreds of people 😂
In the first section alone you must kill at least 70 guys. It’s kind of immersion breaking how crazy it is.
There is an achievement in U4 called Narative Dissonance so they know
Uncharted always gets shit over this.
@@pianospawn1 ah yes, uncharted and its never ending devotion to.. immersion?
When you think about it, Uncharted is a strange series. I can't decide on whether to fixate on how backwards the first game feels in retrospect, or how insane it is that the sequel surpassed it so effortlessly and quickly, ultimately becoming more timeless than arguably even the other games in the series.
I mean that happens with films, Albums etc. aswell.
Uncharted 4 is definitely the best
@@johnnyflannigan136 I can't decided between 3 and 4 for favorite. I bounce between the two when I just need a break from the world without really having to really focus on puzzles that demand full attention and you still have fun.
@@johnnyflannigan136 4 is definitely better but 2 is a lot more iconic because it has been out so much longer
@@johnnyflannigan136 Uncharted 4 is a climbing simulator with barely any combat or puzzles. It forces you to drive a boat and listen to dialogue, drive a car and listen to dialogue, climb copious amounts of surfaces and listen to dialogue. How do people think it is the best in the series when only 10% of the gameplay is anything close to the previous titles? The story is no better than 3’s and the opening forces you to play Crash Bandicoot to show you how meta Naughty Dog can be. It’s the worst (critically praised) game I’ve played, ever

Uncharted 1 will always have a place in my heart, despite any of its problems

I'm playing through Uncharted one right now, a year later, and I remember seeing this back when it was released and thinking "oh, it can't be THAT bad in terms of clunkiness". It absolutely is. I share Bricky's astonishment that this ever got a sequel.
It got a sequel due to how popular it was, players at the time never played anything like it before
@Nottheguyyouthinkitis I played on the third highest difficulty setting, you over-aggressive, easily-offended moron.
@Nottheguyyouthinkitisbro it is clunky as fuck, idk where u got the idea he found it difficult from
The actress for Elena is one of my faves. Before I really got into Vidya games, I was seeing her in the TV show Haven and she was awesome in kt

The best thing I can give the combat is the divine gift of shoulder swapping, the sheer number of games that would be improved if I could switch my bloody shoulder are just... it's a game play feature that more 3rd person shooters need. I only know if two with it, uncharted as a whole, and the Transformers war for cybertron series.
every single third person shooter needs shoulder swapping no matter what
Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2 let you should swap
Raiders of the Lost Ark came out when I was in high school and it became my favorite movie of all time. When I saw Uncharted was coming out, I bought a PS3 "for my kids". I loved everything about it because it showcased the last revolutionary jump in console performance - PS2 to PS3. And I was playing Raiders! Flaws? Sure, but for the most part, it was everything I wanted in a game. I've replayed U1 many times. I forgive all the faults because of how much I loved it when I played it the first time.
Except when they killed Eddy and his sorry mob.
I forgot there where literally zombies in this game. Although, to be fair, everything had zombies back then.
Everything still has Zombies.

man I loved the jetsky segment as a kid, having infinite ammo with a grenade launcher with the caveat of the difficulty of controlling the jetsky without dying, man I just cant help myself, I love uncharted one since I was a kid in 2007
Even after 15 years, I’ll still love the existence and the experience Uncharted gave me.
I love all the games except for 3. I will never play that game again because its just bad all around.
@@Evilshtt353 I actually rlly liked 3. I agree with almost everything said abt it in this channel’s video on it tbh
@@Evilshtt353 Same, I plan on replaying 1 and 2, but I'll never touch 3 again
Yea totally agree it's clunky but for some reason I still enjoy it except for some areas.
It's actually my favorite one. And beat it no problem and loved gameplay. Had 100s of headshots
Holy shit how did you beat it on brutal lol
Uncharted 1 to the rest of the series is like when you buy a new mattress and pillows, and the first night or so it's super uncomfortable because the memory foam hasn't expanded out from being frozen and compressed from being delivered, but by the end of the week you see why you got it and no longer question your purchase.
I’m about 60% of the way through the game, and the combat is killing my will to finish the game. I’ve had these games digitally for a few years now, and I’m finally giving them a shot. This game is lucky that it’s relatively short.
It really isn’t that bad lol
It gets better with the sequels in my opinion
I remember watching my dad play this when I was about 7 and he kicked me out cuz it "wasn't for me". But now about 7 years later I've played almost all of the uncharted series. Really great video, thx 4 the nostalgia.
I bet you’ve never played Golden Abyss
Uncharted 3 fking sucks and I don't even remember why.

It wasn't a curse, it was a mind affecting fungus. The Last of Us is the alternate timeline where Nate Fails to keep the sarcophagus from leaving the island.
So it was kind of an extended demo.

Actually the ocean Nate dumps it is just so happens to be the same location where the CBI originates according to last of us lore.
I 100% agree. I have a lot of Nostalgia for Uncharted 1 cause I played it back in 2009/2010 when I was very young. But after playing the sequels when the collection came out, playing Uncharted 1 again feels so bad

Like Nate goes from curses and zombies to just regular treasure hunting with basic people.
Thank God. The curses and paranormal stuff was always bad.
10:08 the game grumps reference sold me, take my sub

Ladies and gentlemen do not play this game on the hardest difficulty if you really want to at this point testicular destruction might be more plasent

The gameplay is what I'd expect off of a video game journalist, so you made it Bricky!
i LOVE that you used Crash Twinsanity music for this video, what a throwback
Its a crime that you still haven't made a Deep Rock Galactic video

I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt this way
its funny that was exactly my thought after finishing that game, I had played the rest first so it was clear this was just a meh thing that needed to happen so we can get the actual good games
i always find realy coool how uncharted made sir francis drake a man who had a moral compass, and would rather save the world rather than be famous, and they did it twice! they raly made sir francis drake an unsong hero and i love it
I think most of these problems stem from the fact that you don't enjoy the game's combat system.
If I was to rank the main entries it'd be
1.Among Thieves
2.A Thief's End
3.Drakes Fortune
4.Drakes Deception
Fun fact: Elana can hipfire on the jetski, not sure about the grenade launcher, but she auto aims to barrels
Guess for 2007 it's so good, especially when you're a child 😂
Kinda sad that we probably will never get game like Uncharted ever again. Especially seeing Naughty Dog like this nowadays
Honestly I could listen to bricky talking about anything. Your channel is amazing, keep it up!
Uncharted 1 is my second favourite after number 4
Great video. Interesting take. I love the Uncharted series and I'm definitely in the minority but the first one is my favourite. I personally feel the sense of mystery and history was bigger here.
I liked the editing here at this very moment 8:02 where the gun is pointed at bricky's head. Mwaah chefs kiss
When you had to shoot a single enemy almost 10 times just to kill them. And with a freaking rifle. Good times.
And so you're always calculating whether it's better to have a pistol with 100 bullets or a Magnum with 8 bullets lolol good times ...
Elena picked it up for him at the end and then he's reminded of the expedition
I have always been the weirdo guy that hold my controller with a claw grip. I've never had problems with uncharted 1 when it comes to moving and shooting at the same time, though I do agree it does feel clunky. But, I got used to it pretty quickly personally.

I know the first one didn't age well, but if it wasn't for this, we wouldn't have all the other great uncharted games
Yikes calling him out huh
I completely forgot I played this game like 5 years ago and seeing you play it brought back my PTSD
Played for the first time ever on ps plus, and boy was it tedious. The enemies have auto lock-on aim to hit you no matter what, the same generic gun battles over and over was exasperating and clonky mechanicshere and there😂.
