I ran a 200DSM to 2 Orion XTR 12's in a bandpass box back in the day, a 60ix for my dash/deck. I could pull up to my high school (1994) and playing my Techmaster PEB CD rattle the ceiling in the gymnasium. It was glorious.

Love to see these tests on the gear I grew up with. I was saving for my car audio gear 2-3 years before I even had a license or car to install it in! I picked up a Punch 200x2 trans-ana from a guy in the parking lot of a pawn shop as we were both on our way in. As a 17 year old, this was the holy grail of amps to me, and I think I paid under $200. Before being stolen along with my ride a few years later, it was powering a pair of bridged Premier TS-1240s and a single Orion XTR 15" bridged along with them for something like 1.3 ohms! The amp never complained or shut down, but ran hot unsurprisingly. Chewed up a few alternators along the way, but it would flip quarters on the roof all day long. Way underrated!
My favorite amp of all time. back in 93 all you needed was one of these and 2 JL 12s and you were pretty much the baddest on the block at 17 years old lol. Cool to see you got one of the amp dynos!
I have a punch 150,a punch 45 ,and a power 300 in my boneyard loved all of them.right now I have the 200 ix running a jl audio 12w3v3 bridged and it sounds good,t600 running front and rears ,morels up front and focal cc’d 6.5 in doors it’s a nice 2 amp system.
@@seanhower5130 nice buddy, I have 2) 200s, 2) 100s, 1) 40 and 1) 60 old schools just like this. I think mid 90s waffle grill. I had one 200ix powering a jl 12w6 v2. It was loud until the surround blew out on the woofer. Have to repair the surround.
cool review! i used to love the Rockford ads in car stereo review. the ones with the blazer windows rippling beneath peoples fingers as they press on the glass while its playing....memories awwwww ;)
I had that amp pushing 2 kicker comp 15s back in the day. No one would ever believe me that the amp was pushing them speakers like it was. I have always owned Rockford fosgate amps and I have never be disappointed
I said it from the day I got mine in 1994 Best amp ever made . I miss it so much , lost it to an accident . Kicked ass had it running 4 12inch Pro punch subs ..
Thanks for the link on the caps for the amp, however I would like you to do a Dino test on a old rockford fosgate amp for me PUNCH 55.2, I would like to see that video for that particular amp, my father give it to me about 17 years ago
Thank You! Have been running this one for a year at about 80-90% max power, mono into 3 ohms, so far reliable! Hate the style of them crazy end caps but I keep them on for perhaps better heat dissipation.
Been running 2x200ix and 4080dsm linked with punch links for over 15 years. On 2x punch hx2 12s they have followed me through 4 vehicles so far and still slam.

I Had the 200 in the 90s and I ran 2 fosgste power 15s and it was very stable at 2 ohm!! It handled every thing a gave it. I still have the Amp and most of all of my stuff from that last Build..... I think I took everything out in about 96 and sold the Car.
Thanks for your test results! Awsome , I have 2 punch 200’s and a punch 500 so by the looks of it I should run my subs at a 2 ohm load off one the punch 200’s at 2ohms bridged mono instead of using the punch 500 to power the subs would this be right based on you Dyno tests? Which makes me wonder what to do with the punch 500 when the 200 outperforms it! I’m loving your channel from Australia and You have inspired me to fire these old skool amps up again! Great show ! I’m loving it 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽💯 if you can give me some ideas I’m going to resurrect those old skool days! 😆
I Ran 2 rockford 12inch pro series in my 1990 Mustang on one of these 200dsm Amps. It was great. I also had a 40dsm and and 40ix for the mids and highs.
An ol' friend of mine had his hoopride done at the sound shop when we were in high school.. All Alpine, head unit, alarm, highs and mid speskers/and amps and for thee trunk he got 4 punch classic 12's , flush paneled in with a single punch 200x2 trans anna, pushin them , with a 3 way Fosgate active crossover .. Man it sounded fn great .. The whole shebang with the car alarm was like $1,200.00 retail. 1995 a.d. 😂
As usual, an excellent piece. This was probably the best thing that Rockford ever produced. Not necessarily in how much it cheated or how good the quality was. Mostly just that it was the right price, the right size, & looked mean (oh and the punch links were an incredible idea).
I agree thinking these were light years ahead of the "sticker" HD series with the molex plugs. They definitely got it right with these. I know you like them and have quite a collection of the DSM's
The new tests are awesome. Get that Soundstream Reference 300 tested. I'm curious to see the differences in power compared to the old resistor bank method,
Joe Rico I sold the SS Ref 300 a while back, but have a Ref 500 I'm going to test soon. I think you'll see the "certified" tests using the Amp Dyno are very similar to my old test methods. This mode tests the amp with a sine wave up to 1% THD. It is fun to see the uncertified (up to clipping) and dynamic burst RMS tests the AD-1 provides. Some amps have a TON of headroom...a good example is the Punch 200 DSM shown above!
Awesome. I have 2 mint original boxed Reference 500 and it's probably my favorite amp of all time. Hits the sweet spot for anything you need to run on it. CSR rated rated it for 598 watts into a bridge 2 ohm load/ 144 x 2 @ 4 ohms back in a 93 or 94 issue. After that review I bought both my units. I also have a closet full of Rubicon amps I want to send you for testing.
I still have the issue along with all the car audio rags from the 90's. Missing the first few years of Car but have everything from mid 90 until the end. I really want to see how the D'amore compares to the testing methods of the 90's. That way we can look at the old tests and fill in the blanks to amps that don't get tested with the new methods.
Joe Rico I'm curious to see how it performs as well. I'll look for that article, but I bet they used 1kHz tone and measured THD at 1% for the power output. If this is the case, I should be able to do the same test! Could I trouble you in scanning or taking pics of the SS Ref 500 review? I'm sure I have the magazine, but it's in storage and not easily accessible now. I scanned a few things from CSR in 1993/94, but didn't see the Ref 500 review
Wow that blows away any expectations I had of that amp. I'll be running a rockford bd1000a1 any chance ud have one kicking around u could test for me eventually? Thanks for posting all the amp dyno vids!
hi Dereck! very nice video. Ho have a question for you, i got a Rockford Fosgate Punch 200ix and a Precision Power 2150M, now i have buy from a friend a JL Audio 12w6v2 D4, than i need use one of this amp on this subwoofer, its better use the RF Punch 200ix at 8 ohm mono o PPi2150M ?
I agree. I'm using the little Punch PBR amps in one of my cars as a simple system upgrade with a JL Stealthbox and 6.5 components in the doors and they provide respectable amplification in a TINY package! 100% stealth upgrade and 1000x better than stock sound
Lots of info, great video, thx for sharing, but I am a dummy & don't understand half of these numbers. I will spend time to learn more about this but my reason for posting is that I still own a 200 dsm ix. Its been sitting in my garage & now I plan on installing it. It will be powering a simple system (one 8" or 10" sub in an enclosure in a '05 Tacoma with factory door speakers for starters). I believe I gotta match the subwoofer to ohms setting I choose on the amp right? What setting is the most reliable & recommended? thx in advance, any help would be appreciated
I currently own a punch 200x2 DSM, punch 400 x2 DSM t Punch 40x2 dsm And finally a punch 100 ox DSM. I have owned maybe 20 dsm amps over the last 25 years and maybe don’t know the answer to this question Will all of them run 2 ohm mono? Or does it vary from amp to amp? I did have a punch power 50x2 that I ran 2.6 mono (1.3 ohm) and it would run, get hot and turn off
I have a punch 200x2 trans ana can you tell me what the difference is between it and 200ix dsm. i used to run a 200ix back then in my hay day lol and found this one a couple yrs ago just wondering if output is same or not thanks big D i like all your videos
Hey D nice man. Really good video. I wonder if it would push even more with a recap? How hot did it get at the end of the run? Thanks and have a good day sir... Steven
It's cool, I'm not trying to change your opinion, everyone is entitled to that. My 2003 RF Power 550 has been a great amp I've used in 3ch mode (mids/highs on 2 channels and sub bridged on other two channels). It's not going to blow anyone's hat off, but it's been a great amp I've used in 3 cars over a 10yr period. Very compact, powerful and clean sounding.
I got my 200 DSM back in 96-97 and it was driving 4 jBL 12" subs at 2 ohms mono and that thing never got hot. I still have it with my alpine 7618. I'm going to the grave with them. Lol!
i have 2 200x2 punch amps. i had a 60x2, sold that. then bought a 100x2 that i had powering a pair of vega 124s at 2 ohms. nothing in my area was as loud. the best amps rockford fosgate ever made. except the power 1000
hey, can you dyno a old school rockford fosgate 250M for the world to see? i have one powering an american bass XD1044. the subwooofer is rated at 450 RMS and it stretches the surround.
Can you PLEASE DO A TEST OF THE PUNCH 250X2 IT HAS TO BE A BEAST IT HITS HARDER THAN MY OLD SCHOOL HIFONICS ZEUS Vll ...it has to do at least 1200 watts mono at 2 ohms
I have a 1998 model punch 225.2 I'm curious what it does? Does not sound like a '112.5 watt per channel' amp to me. It pushes 15" kickers easy. Maybe 900 watts? Good stuff BigD
If you are referring to dynamic RMS power, I have no doubt it would do 900W (simulating music). The certified and uncertified modes are 10 seconds of a continuous sine wave and good to show a constant power output of an amp, but the dynamic mode better displays how it performs playing back dynamic music
Is that a RMS reading!?!? If not what was the RMS on that thing @ 4ohm 12.5v? I just sold my 200 dsm ix to a good friend for $100 and was gonna help him set the gain...
Hello friend, how are you? Congratulations on the videos, could you help me? What is the difference between the fosgate puch 200 x2 transana dsm and the 200 dsm punch of this video? Was it the same amplifier?
Not much difference. The 200ix and 200x2 both have provisions for crossovers (via x-cards). I'm working on a video to compare the 3 different Punch 200 DSM models
Hey man I sent you a message on UA-cam but haven't heard back and needed some help with setting gains on my amp. I purchased a DD-1 on Amazon and I am confused on setting the gains on my old school Fosgate Punch 100ix amp. It has 2 gain set screws for each channel. I figure I should place the positive probe on the DD-1 to the left positive on the amp and set the left gain, and then go to the right side. But, what if I'm running the amp bridged on one 4 ohm woofer? Would I still do it that way or would I need to hook the negative probe to the amps right negative terminal and the positive probe to the left positive? I could really use some help here and hope it's not such a dumb question.
***** you should set the gains for each channel individually since you have two dials for gain. Then if you bridge the amp for the woofer, both gains should be set in the same place.
Dereck BigDWiz Thanks man, sorry for flooding you on YT and FB with the same question but I couldn't figure it out. So I could basically set each channel with the DD-1 and then go back with a DMM and make sure the voltage is equal on both channels?
Hey. I just bought a pair of Dynaudio Esotec 242 GT speakers. I will use a separate amplified sub woofer. What would be the best to channel amplifier for these speakers?
Dereck BigDWiz Thank you. My first amp was a Fosgate back in 1977. I think for nostalgia, I will go with Rockford Fosgate. Not to mention, your reviews seem to be glowing for them...
+Roy Lange wow, 1977? Do you recall the model? Prior to 1980, it was Fosgate, Rockford didn't join until 1980. I have a mid 70's "PowerPunch" PR-7000, they also had a smaller version PR-3500
Dereck BigDWiz Yes...it was a fosgate amp. Did you ever see one? As I recall, it had a seperate unit that went along with the amp--I think an equalizer of some kind....I remember the power button made a huge scratchy noise when I turned it on and off. I put 12 inch woofers in the rear seat panels and used a Nakamichi 250 Cassette player. That was the best stuff at that time. Also, I remember a couple of year later I drove up to Hollywood to buy an amp that was the same model that Joe Walsh chose for his car. I blew that amp...but because the idiots made the positive power terminal black and the Negative Red!!! What were they thinking???
I have a 500m which was '95 and the 250m was '96. I'm pretty sure I don't have a 250m, but the results of the 500m should be virtually identical (video to come later)
Mother of God. I forgot that these were not even rated for sub 4ohm use. Lol. I ran mine at 2 ohms for years, though it did go into protect a couple times after some 3 hour torture sessions. Always came right back after it cooled though and I had TERRIBLE ventilation. Favorite amp of all time bar none. Any plans to strap the DSM 500 on?
My comment in the video about 2 ohms was referring to 2 ohms mono....hope this didn't cause confusion? I always ran my RF's at 2 ohms mono all the way back to a 1st gen Punch 150! They got hot, but never gave up! Yes, the 500m has already been tested and don't want to give anything away...but only 3 letters describe it...W O W
my friend ran a punch 60 dsm bridged 2 ohms mono to to orion cobalt subs in a voodoo box and it was enough bass to tickle your voicebox when you spoke.
Think I still have my 200, used to have it pounding out 4 - 12 in pioneer subs in a thunderbird. Yeah I blew a ear drum 🤣 Now I might have to install it to push 2 - 12 in punch subs, & just run my new 1000.5 punch amp to mids & highs only 👍🏾
Hmmm, I could fit 3 of those on my amp rack. I only have room for 2 of my Pioneers running 360Wrms. :) Ew, lets see. 1 running 2 channels of mid bass into a pair of sealed 10s and 2 driving separate voice coils on my sub. Nice.
I ran a 200DSM to 2 Orion XTR 12's in a bandpass box back in the day, a 60ix for my dash/deck. I could pull up to my high school (1994) and playing my Techmaster PEB CD rattle the ceiling in the gymnasium. It was glorious.
Absolutely the best amp I have ever owned. Wished I had a 500dsm. Old School Baby!!!!
I got the 500 :p and others with 3 amp connectors

Had these Rockford amps for a short while, borrowed. Loved them, one of my many favorites. I was more of a Linear Power guy myself.
We ran the punch 200ix at 1ohm mono fanned in late 90s and got great power as long as we fed them enough voltage!!! Freaking love those amps
In my tests, the ix had a protection circuit where the non ix model just kept going
@@wal we never had any issues out of either as long as the supply power was enough.
Awesome, I had 2 200s on 8 RF audiophile 12s back in those days loved those amps we ran them @ 2ohm all day
I would love to see what this amp would do on 14.4-15 volts
+1.1kw @14,4volts
Hell yeah retest let's go! Please

Now that's some old school power
I currently own a punch 200x2 DSM, punch 400 x2 DSM t
Punch 40x2 dsm
And finally a punch 100 ox DSM.
I have owned maybe 20 dsm amps over the last 25 years and maybe don’t know the answer to this question
Will all of them run 2 ohm mono? Or does it vary from amp to amp?
I did have a punch power 50x2 that I ran 2.6 mono (1.3 ohm) and it would run, get hot and turn off
I subbed, great channel. Can you repair the old school punch series amps from the 90s?
I’m not a tech. Check with Freeman’s Car Stereo in Hickory, NC
@@wal ok, thank you.
Can you test a punch 250x2 i dont see alot of them around
I have a punch 200x2 trans ana can you tell me what the difference is between it and 200ix dsm. i used to run a 200ix back then in my hay day lol and found this one a couple yrs ago just wondering if output is same or not thanks big D i like all your videos
Hey D nice man. Really good video. I wonder if it would push even more with a recap? How hot did it get at the end of the run? Thanks and have a good day sir... Steven
Can you put a JL slash amp on there or New HD amps??
Hey friend. You can test Fosgate 200x2 and fosgate 4.6x? Thanks.
Although I could be wrong on them selling the company but one thing for sure is that their products went downhill big time after this series 2?
Lol!
Hey Dereck, do you own the lil' 2600x? I just bought one for $22 and I would love to know how it does on the Dyno.
I loved mine!!! I had four of them.
👌😬👍
i have 2 200x2 punch amps. i had a 60x2, sold that. then bought a 100x2 that i had powering a pair of vega 124s at 2 ohms. nothing in my area was as loud. the best amps rockford fosgate ever made. except the power 1000
The best I think.
Is the 200 dsm direct from the 200ix? Or is it the same amp?
That amp can still run with the best of them..
You said it! These days it would be labeled "1500W" if rated by many of the lesser brands
Hell yes I have the gray punch 250x2 and it hit way harder ..
I saw you had a 250m2 is it the same as the 250x2 ?
hey, can you dyno a old school rockford fosgate 250M for the world to see? i have one powering an american bass XD1044. the subwooofer is rated at 450 RMS and it stretches the surround.
Big D I have a question do have a guy who can fix these old school amps
GS amp repair. He worked at RF back in the day. You can look him up on Facebook
Can you PLEASE DO A TEST OF THE PUNCH 250X2 IT HAS TO BE A BEAST IT HITS HARDER THAN MY OLD SCHOOL HIFONICS ZEUS Vll ...it has to do at least 1200 watts mono at 2 ohms
So what amp is considered a good amp by your standards today? Very interested in knowing......
I have the 200 trans ana whats the big difference>?
I can get a punch power 200m it says 500x1 at 2 ohm I wonder what it do wired to 1 ohm these an handle low impedence also I thought.
Big d I have a ppi pro mos 25 can u hook urs up I know it will run 1 ohm mono bridged just wanna know the rms
***** You can do it that way, but just using the DD-1 should get you close enough (on each channel)
The old beast
Hey. I just bought a pair of Dynaudio Esotec 242 GT speakers. I will use a separate amplified sub woofer. What would be the best to channel amplifier for these speakers?
+Roy Lange these questions are impossible to answer. Budget, size, personal preferences are all taken into account when deciding on an amplifier
Hey can u do a dyno test on a punch 700s
Had 2 of these hooked up to 2 Punch DVC power 10s. Used these for Years running them 2 ohm. Wish I never sold them.
I just got mine out of the basement from 1998 Its punch 200 with 2 Punch Power DVC 15s Can wait to hook them back up.
I wish you had a 250m too test. I had two of these ran 1 ohm on 8 15's and it used to push 152's all day. That was back in 1996-97
I have a 500m which was '95 and the 250m was '96. I'm pretty sure I don't have a 250m, but the results of the 500m should be virtually identical (video to come later)
Are you going to do a test at 1 ohm bridged? Is this where I put in my request? lol
MullinPerformance Yes, I will try 1 ohm mono and 0.5 ohm mono in burst mode and will make a quick video update
thank you sir
whats the difference between this and the ix version? And will this really run at 2 ohms mono all day? jezus those numbers are insane!
Ix and x2 models incorporate more protection and provide less output at 2 ohms mono
Ever tested a punch 30DSMiX?
Any chance you are going to test this amplifier again with your new power supply?
Hey Big D what’s a good estimated power output of the punch 100 dsm? Do you think it’s close to half of what the 200 dsm does?or more.
The Punch 100 puts out MORE than half of what the 200 does.
when you ganna test a punch 225.2 is the grey one from year 97 ore 98. and thanks for having a minute to answer us.
So many amps, so little extra time to test...I’m sure I’ll try one eventually
One of the first amps I got was a Punch 40 DSM of the same generation.
test the RF punch 225.2 please 🤙
my friend ran a punch 60 dsm bridged 2 ohms mono to to orion cobalt subs in a voodoo box and it was enough bass to tickle your voicebox when you spoke.
I wounder how long can it handle the 2ohm load bridge
I used mine this way for many years with no issues
Think I still have my 200, used to have it pounding out 4 - 12 in pioneer subs in a thunderbird. Yeah I blew a ear drum 🤣 Now I might have to install it to push 2 - 12 in punch subs, & just run my new 1000.5 punch amp to mids & highs only 👍🏾
Can you run it and not blow the amp up at 2 ohms
Do a test on a punch 360.2 I got one an I wanna see wat she could do plzzzz
Pretty impressive! Dereck, That amp also seems to be fairly compact. What are the outside dimensions?
9 5/8" x 12 5/8" x 2 5/8"
Hmmm, I could fit 3 of those on my amp rack. I only have room for 2 of my Pioneers running 360Wrms. :) Ew, lets see. 1 running 2 channels of mid bass into a pair of sealed 10s and 2 driving separate voice coils on my sub. Nice.
I had 2 punch 75 and 2 punch 150 running Boston acoustics mids and tweets and 2 10 inch Boston subs and then a 12 inch sub Rockford Fosgate pro
