      I felt that way towards the end of Destiny 1 - had been playing fairly consistently with almost no content throughout the lifespan of the game, and after Destiny 2's disastrous launch I asked myself what it was that was keeping me playing. The answer? The friends I'd made. But we all felt the same - so rather than continue to smash our heads against the Destiny wall, we just left together and moved onto another game (WoW) which has an unfathomable amount of content by comparison and a much more rewarding sense of progression.

    • @atomic_wait
      @atomic_wait 3 роки тому +105

      Whatever its true motivations were, sunsetting has effectively depreciated the value of all content in the game. A car that never breaks down is much more valuable than an otherwise identical car that breaks down after exactly one year (see Gnawing Hunger). By making all content in the game transient and temporary they've depreciated the benefit of grinding for gear, getting good with that gear, getting good at any given activity, etc. The impermanence of a raid means you might be motivated to get better at it faster to reap its benefits sooner, but those benefits don't last as long as before. In some sense we get the worst of both worlds: we have to rush more than before to get gear that won't last as long as before, i.e. work harder for less benefit. Bungie's eased the pain here and there by letting us target loot more easily with the new final raid chest design, the Hunt perk targeting system, etc, but sunsetting has created a new FOMO + 'what's the point' dynamic that I find very demotivating.

    • @sladedean8928
      @sladedean8928 3 роки тому +6

      @@atomic_wait I can totally see where you are coming from and your argument was very sound, but your analogy about cars doesn't exactly make sense in this context. New cars come out every year, and more times than not they improve upon the previous design because of the innovation of technology. In destiny, however we get new weapons and armor all the time, but since we already had so many amazing unbeatable weapons, its hard for players to want to use anything else. Therefore, if you have amazing weapons, there is no motivation to get new ones and use new ones as you already have the best. Back when sunsetting was announced, I immediately dropped my mountaintop, put it in the vault, and picked up other weapons. You wanna know why? Because I felt it was necessary to become more skilled with other weapons because of how the meta was going to change, having a constant rotation of weapons creates an artificial motivation to get the newest gear and to use it, which is healthy for the game's meta. I do agree that sometimes I fall into a "What's the point" dynamic, but the ability to create new loadouts and buildcraft has been better than previously in destiny because of the idea of sunsetting. You know, before sunsetting was announced, I never used warmind mods. Never. I was so into using mountaintop and recluse or Gnawing Hunger that I didn't want to slap on my seventh seraph revolver or smg. With how the meta has changed, its broadened my buildcrafting views and let me explore other aspects of the game. Maybe my argument to you is pointless, but maybe it'll change the way you think about sunsetting, even just a little.

Expectations are way to high and another problem is that there is a lot of content in the game but no one wants to do it because it is tedious. Destiny needs something really different to what they've done in the past, transmog is a sort of new thing for destiny but I feel like there needs to be more different stuff. For example I would really like a sort of gunsmith system were you're specifically able to choose between every available perk and available sight on a specific gun, like you go to banshee and basically customize your gun.
      Or be able to upgrade a white, green and blue rarity weapon to purple for more perks and better stats.

      Imo as long as they try to accomodate for everyone (Especially the vocal minority of reddit because a few posts with a few thousand upvotes in a game that's played by hundreds of thousands is def not a majority opinion), they will never get to where they want. There's a lot of people playing the game, with lots of ideas and desires for the game, and every time one of them yells enough, bungie complies. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing at times because there's been instances where it saved the game.
      But when you try to please everyone, you end up disappointing everyone. At some point you have to choose what group to piss off and cut them as losses. And it should def not be the "just more destiny" crowd. Quality over quantity.

    All of this talk reminds me of the classic existential question: “why am I pursuing money?” People will practically dedicate their lives to making money; people will make money to make more money. Once they’ve made enough to ensure a stable life and continue to pursue money, there comes to a point where they look back and ask why? What was this all for? There are many takes on this, but in my opinion the value was never in the money, the value was in how you spent your time.
    How this equate to destiny, we are basically the rich man with an existential crisis right now. We have all the powerful loot we could ever possibly need. Bungie can keep rolling out more loot every season so players can pursue it, but a month or two in players are left asking what is this all for? I wish there was more content in the game that was fun to do. I feel like taking crucible playlists out was a terrible idea. I feel like leaving the strike playlist as it’s been for the past 6 years is a terrible idea. I feel like taking activities like the menagerie (I personally enjoyed playing it) was one of the worst ideas they’ve had. Make these activities fun. Personally I feel like a hoard mode would really satisfy many players. I don’t get on destiny to pursue more loot at this point, I want to get on to have fun.

    • @peter2kx
      @peter2kx 3 роки тому +4

      @@milzhere I think how they execute it is crucial. A hoard mode similar to zombies where every level it gets increasingly difficult to the point where it’s impossible to complete. Make it so that after a certain number of levels there is a reward that’s worthwhile, increasing in rarity/value/quantity. This would be a good place to farm loot for casual players, and a good challenge for those who who want to break records. It would give reason to use the insanely powerful builds we have. I feel like I’m all of the attempted hoard modes Bungie has done, they’ve only taken half measures, too afraid to go all in.

    • @milzhere
      @milzhere 3 роки тому +1

      @@peter2kx I loved zombies, and while that sounds fun on its face, i can't help but think about after 3-6 months of that, when it'll be abandoned/monotonous. Since bungie doesn't update existing content frequently, they'd probably just recreate it in a slightly different way every 6-12 months and it would be in the exact same place the core playlists are now, until they abandon it as well. I'm clamoring for a place to use builds as much as you, but this concept just doesn't address any of the issues with the core game. I don't think going "all in" on a mindless killfest will make players feel more rewarded for the time sink that is Destiny.

      What's your idea of "non-artificial difficulty" besides tweaking the rate at which we deal and take damage? Like Datto mentioned, most enemies in the game aren't really a threat for most content. So do we just need more enemies? They honestly aren't that big of a challenge with today's builds that feed off of multikills. Do we need more special units? People complain endlessly about snipers, champions, etc. already. Do we need more mechanics? I actually agree on this front but it's clear that making pug-friendly mechanics is a very delicate tightrope between "inconsequential" and "people are rage-quitting this activity because of randos". I've seen all of these things and more also described as "artificial" difficulty, to the point where I don't think that word really means anything anymore beyond "I don't like this".
      Like yes making enemies higher level isn't exciting on its own, but it does at least force us to actually engage with the systems for increasing our damage and survivability, and to play in a more careful/considered way instead of just speedrunning everything.

    The one big thing I like about Europa is the weather system, though it doesn’t build up to the hype I feel like Bungie tried to make about it. It would be nice to see other planets get their own weather systems and maybe build events around that.
    Like the Exo training where we have to run to the fires to stay warm while taking on Vex. But add a leaderboard and goal to complete them in, if you’re able to beat the goal score or time wise you get something nice, preferably armor or mod wise related to the event you just completed.
    Heck it’d be amazing if we somehow got a mini forge mode and can create variants of pvp maps or missions. Create some awards for those people like “have 100 people play on your map/mode”. We’ll at least have more content while Bungie cooks up the story and larger scale missions and raids.
    I know people, myself included sometimes compare Destiny to Halo but I think community wise there’d be some benefits from it

Destiny's combat is designed in a similar way but somehow it just doesn't seem to work as well. I can dodge a few projectiles, sure, I can disarm dreg grenades by shooting them, but it feels like there isn't any counterplay most of the time. Enemies are way too quick to spam ridiculous shots with perfect aim that knock out your entire shield. One dreg grenade is easy enough to destroy but dregs almost always come in packs of 3 or more. Even with good aim, you're fighting a losing battle against dreg grenades when trying to recover shields. All the tools to make good encounters are there, but the enemies just don't stick around long enough to make any of that feel meaningful.

Obviously there are some quality of life changes in D2 that are better cause of the engine like the whole orbit thing but I'm sure they could've updated that on D1 if they focused on it and updated with the new hardware released. It feels a little too late now unless they make massive changes before Witch Queen but I doubt that by seeing how Beyond Light and this season were handled. Beyond Light by itself is pretty good but since its an expansion and nothing added to crucible, vanguard, and gambit(minor changes but again not enough) it really showed the barebone of everything else. I had issues in Shadowkeep with the lack of vendor refresh but with the launch of Beyond Light it really showed. Also the loot pool is extremely boring and nothing feels unique and it's more infuriating when you look at old weapon models THAT ARENT EVEN USED! WHERE ARE THE OMOLON PULSES, SUROS SNIPERS, VEIST SIDEARMS, AND MORE. Like seriously its not that hard, slap cruciblelike skin on an omolon pulse and boom a weapon there. I defend bungie alot and stasis isn't that bad the REAL issue is the core of the game and what keeps people playing and none of that was introduced in Beyond Light or this Season.

    Have you got some suggestions for bungie, I’d love to see what “dattos destiny” would play like. I think you streamers and content creators to get together and brainstorm what fixes/ improvements/ innovations you guys would do.

    Whoa, last time I was this early we were still using double primaries

  • @BloodKaez
    @BloodKaez 3 роки тому +17

    Anyone remember when the enemies were a higher level than the player, even when the player was capped..... Prepridge Farms remembers . Seriously, if Bungie wants to challenge players, THIS would be a great first step. Also, maybe we don't need so many buffs/debuffs in D2. Champions are "fine" but honestly really just annoying monsters and it forces players to use specific weapons over freedom of weapon choices.
    For strikes, I think we need to look backwards to go forwards. You know what I enjoyed about grinding strikes in D1, hunting for cool weapons and cosmetic armors (this wouldn't solve anything major, but would bring more people into the playlist). Do the same for crucible, though they sorta did this with Stars in Shadow, but I would like MULTIPLE NEW crucible armor/weapons to hunt for. Maybe even new game modes.... I LIKED rift, it had problems, but I still liked it.
    Nightfalls are okay the way they are I guess, though I used to love doing Nightfalls in D1 because they were a challenge (in some cases cheesable, I'm looking at you Icebreaker). It forced you to play well, if your team (or you if you solo'd it) wiped, that's it. Go to start. I just don't have an incentive to care about NF's in D2.
    Raids, Hard Mode (for one). For the same reason as NF's. Hard Mode and being unable to revive mattered in D1, it forced you and your team to know the mechanics and play well. Not being able to revive also allowed for some "Hero Moments". I just feel like we lost too much for "casual play"

    • @sladedean8928

      I mean... raids now have revive tokens, so its just a mix of normal and hard mode?

    • @BloodKaez
      @BloodKaez 3 роки тому

      @@sladedean8928 Revive tokens are great for normal, I see your point. But D1 Hard Mode was literally "You died, welp you either succeed with 5 or less or wipe". I get Bungie didn't like some groups only wiping as point to try again, and it made encounters artificially longer in some groups. But it FELT better to finally succeed when you failed a few (or a lot) of attempts before.
      Take DSC for example, outside of a few factors like rubberbanding hp on Atraks or some other glitchy behavior there is literally no challenge to DSC (and a couple of the "challenge modes" of DSC actually just slow the encounter down ...). Original VoG or King's Fall or WotM had actual points you could fail because of enemy damage, enemy positioning, mechanics (even glitchy ones like Aegis in VoG). I MIGHT have some rose tinited goggles about D1 but you can't tell me it was technically a harder game, even with weapons like Ghorn and Icebreaker.
      I also forgot to mention a couple things in my original post. First, we are still paying for the sins of the double primary system. Adept weapons in D1 were a pvp specific way to get elemental primaries outside of raiding (well... until TTK). In addition to some of these guns being exceptional pvp weapons and okayish pve weapons they were something to hunt for. In D2, the main reason "adept" weapons aren't anything to write home about is that elemental primaries are just not that important in D2.
      Also, lets say adept weapons had extra perks IN addition to the normal perks and mod slot. Well then they are strictly better than ANY gun you could get because Bungie just power creeped the hell out of those guns. Guns that probably 95% of the player base couldn't even obtain. And yeah we're getting adept weapons next seasons from other sources, but those ToO adept weapons would ruin the pvp scene even more.
      Sorry for the wall of text, but that's how I see some of the issues, right or wrong :P

    • @sladedean8928
      @sladedean8928 3 роки тому

      @@BloodKaez I see your point. Destiny 1 in some cases, specifically raiding due to core system mechanics and the option of hard mode/ prestige versions of raids is harder. The raids in destiny 2 for the most part are more intuitive and build upon themselves better than the raids in D1 do. D2 is a more polished game with ~slightly~ more distinct roles for classes that lead to an easier time preparing and executing activities like raids. Your point about the original double primary system (which absolutely sucked) is 100% valid. The game due to these differences is ultimately easier in that aspect. I will say, the addition of Grandmaster Nightfalls back in (season 10?) Has been a nice return to the harder destiny experience. The return of VoG with the new destiny 2 changes, and increased difficulty will ultimately make it a better experience in my opinion. VoG being one of the favorite raids in Destiny, the development team is having to scale the raid differently, because as standing with how classes work and how the raiding system functions, the raid would be too easy if they just directly ported it. With the Sunsetting system now in place in D2, many of the previous weapons we would consider (overpowered) are now not viable for doing endgame content, effectively making the game a little harder. With the addition of new perks and exotics, we as a community have found ways around the power vacuum left by guns such as mountain top. With the current system however, and the extra ~class distinction~ it would be a challenge to make all activities at the same level of difficulty that Destiny 1 is. The only way I could see that happen, is by removing a leveling system altogether (besides season pass), and making the grind entirely about personal arsenal. Scale the enemy factions to do more damage and receive less, as we have actually seen this season with the engine update. Crucible in d2 is nothing compared to crucible in d1 because of the ttk on primaries and how they aren't "as relevant" in d2 pvp. In d1, you would rarely find apes as prevalent as you would in d2 simply because primary ttk is so much worse than in the previous game. The reason I highlight ~class distinction~ like so, is that neutral game classes are easier to distinguish than in d1, however, super game classes are harder to distinguish in d2 because most supers relatively do the same thing in d2 rather than having niche specific jobs like in d1, making the use of supers in d2 pvp almost like a game of pick your favorite color. We are in agreement on most of these topics I believe and I think that a look to the past idea might be a good solution to some problems, but a lot of improvements have been made between 1 -> 2. And we should definitely make sure those improvements stay.

    • @BloodKaez
      @BloodKaez 3 роки тому

      @@sladedean8928 Yeah, I like your point of veiw on this. I think your absolutely correct that D2 made many great strides to improve, but basically lost some things along the way. If we could combine old with the new, D2 would be better for it.
      As for VoG, I'm concerned that the loot will be seen by many as "bleh". Obviously we'll know more in the future, but are they bringing back old fan favorites (both armor and weapons). If so? Like they were in D1, because Fatebringer/VoC/Atheon's will basically be ignored in favor of Reload/Damage perks. And if they make them random rolled, they lose what was special, but more likely to be used not many people really wants outlaw dragonfly in our current weapon meta :P

    Probably a wasted comment typing this all out - considering its a UA-cam comment section and it's just my opinion, which is probably pretty niche, but here goes nothing...
    I once watched a stream about - the head developer (CEO?) spoke about how the game was designed to be extremely difficult and have too many options available to players in order to withhold a sense of longevity. The idea was that - if a player simply cant comprehend the options available to them - they must keep trying new combinations, ultimately discovering new techniques and playstyles for new events. This created a game where the content is extraordinarily repetitive, but loses no fun factor or power fantasy; people play the same story every season, and repeat the same maps as "endgame". Why is no love lost? Repeating the same content? Because the versatility and build depth, item depth, and min-maxing is almost technically endless (and sure feels legitimately endless). It never feels the same, it never feels repetitive, its always a chase or a discovery. When it's all said and done - you can say to yourself as you chew threw hordes of enemies. Maybe the enemies are the same, but your pathway was truly yours...or at least it felt it.
    The same was said about during development - it is intentionally hard to grasp...it's basically like learning another language. Forget trying to remember what every item does, or the combinations of items, or where to get them until you are hundreds and hundreds of hours into the game. Even considering that the MAIN story of the game is behind a very long playtime - with only a small % of players reaching it. This was designed to create variation in repetitive content. A mantra of "if you're going to do the same thing over and over, you may as well have fun doing it over and over". (which you've spoken about a lot). I'm assuming this rings true in other MMO RPG's like or , although I have not played either enough to make a comment.
    I think for most people, this doesn't effect them - but I have a sense with anyone who is feeling dry or burnt out on , like me, they also crave that depth and variation in a loot based RPG game. I'm personally glad that Destiny was a gateway drug for irrefutable and truly deep RPG/ARPG games - but I'm saddened that the problem feels obvious to me. Of course you have some variety - but it never feels , the customization has always been minimal, and purely gun based; "". Perhaps we're seeing hints of depth with the new Stasis artifacts, and things like Necrotic Thorn builds. However, they act as a nice page turners and time wasters but don't fully fulfill the power fantasy.
    It still doesn't feel like
    I think over time, unless true depth is added to Destiny (2) - the players that crave this will begin to fall away more and more. As you mentioned - they simply just wont come back again. I'm sure this is only a small part of the population - but repetitive content alongside a limited arsenal of both weapons and customization will drain the well. We need to inject OUR decision making as players into the game, with all of those decisions feeling valid and empowered. I, and perhaps other folks, want to watch a "build guide" that truly blows me away and shows something they never could have dreamed of being possible in this game. I want to use the thing I've created (look up the concept of Ikea) and use it to achieve something great.
    Not sure why I typed this out, maybe to find solace or peace with a conclusion of my time in Destiny.
    I appreciate you sharing your thoughts Datto.

      I've generally been in this middle ground in terms of what a community wants with depth. The last time I have seen a focused call for depth was D2 launch. Since then the vocal community has been split on being for and against it especially when it means changing what is familiar to them and what play "their" way means.

    • @beardedbozo
      @beardedbozo 3 роки тому

      @@evaangelofdeath my guess (based on player counts) is that bungie has it nailed with depth for allowing the highest base that still satiates players wanting some depth. My opinion, as mentioned is most likely very niche (when comparing warframe and poe numbers to d2)

    Have the same issue. When I load up destiny after I finished playing the beyond light content, did a couple wrathborn hunts, got my hawkmoon, and now I just don't even care anymore. I could go on and do the pinnacles, but why? Do do the gm nightfall? But even then, what is the point of it if the goal is to just "get better" gear wise.
    I know Datto isn't in the club of, "D1 is better than D2", but personally, where D1 excelled was at making the base content not super easy. What I mean is strikes were harder, raids were hard outside of the first 24 hours, it just felt like there was more meaning, even when there wasn't.

    I miss the black armory if they brought that back and did some sort of rework. Like master forges where it has a small raid/dungeon feel to it. For example each forge has its own mechanic system have like some champions in it as some “seasoning” and have the regular forges be like a way to prep for the master ones. A good loot system for master would be you being able to chose the perks you would want on a weapon like pick a set and it will roll you a random of the set. Same with the armor, but on armor pick 3 attributes you would like the highest and it will randomly choose 2 . This way you still have that rng without having it be too much rng especially with how sunsetting is. Each master forge can easily be tuned for play styles like one can be long range an other short and what have you so having different weapons and builds will kinda mean something. Idk man I just really miss the black armory.
