IF your tomato seedlings get too leggy, plant them deeper when you repot them into larger containers, and add soil up to the first set of leaves. All those hairs on the stems of the plants are actually root hairs, and when you cover them with soil, they will develop a healthier root system, making them much stronger plants, much more stabilized, as you have a stronger root ball from which they can pull their nutrients from the soil. So, that'll eliminate the leggy issue, making it beneficial to have them initially leggy.

The British garden UA-camrs call this step "pricking out" the seedlings. I did it today with some parsley, cilantro, marigolds, fennel. Did brassicas last weekend. The fennel seedings were weak and didn't take it well, I lost a few and will need to plant more. But overall so far so good.
Thank you for showing us that tomato seedlings are strong enough for this treatment.

I do love tomatoes. I’ve broken the top off a leggy tomato start on way home from the garden centre before now, and ended up with the original plant growing back from the roots, plus the top of the plant that broke off grew roots after I set it in soil. So grateful I’d seen your videos or I’d have probably thought it was hopeless and binned it.

Last autumn I had a broccoli seedling break off above the roots while carrying the pots to the garden to plant them. I thought I'd bung it in the garden anyway to see if it grew, and to my shock it did! Then I had one break in the wind after planting so I replanted it and that grew too! I've taken to starting almost everything this way. We have very little room inside to start seeds right now, so "mass seeding" is the way to go for us. Of course, I have the luxury of 6 helpers to separate seedlings, pot-up, etc throughout the spring. One thing I do in the course of things is rest the seedlings in a shallow bowl of superthrive water before putting them in their new cups. This makes a huge difference in their strength going forward and almost completely eliminates transplant shock.

I laughed so hard after the start of this video as I've just spent the latter part of the afternoon and most evening separating out and "repotting/transplanting" my tomatoe seedlings. I had 3 little "trays" of tomatoes and now have almost 90 seedlings. Because I'm in Northern Ontario Canada I will end up "repotting" them once more before they go into my garden or are given to family/friends or sold. Our last frost date is the end of May so I like to make sure that each "repotting" they are deeper and have really strong roots so they don't have to worry about setting down a more extensive root system when they finally make it to our gardens here. I also like to "repot" them in deep paper pots that I make using a wine bottle, so they are pretty big and the roots are nice and deep by June 1st. when most people put them in their gardens.

I then put in soil start mix in starter trays 1 plant per cell until they are ready for up putting. I do the same with all my peppers. When I up pot, I hydroponic at least 1 of each variety. I transplanted some bunching onions just this way last week! Being fairly new to gardening I didn’t know if what I was doing was right, so I’m happy it seems I have a little intuition. I had planted them in a small pot last fall. They made it through the winter that way but their roots were fairly bound up and intertwined. I teased them apart as best I could in a bowl of water but had to cut the roots where they had gotten too tangled. I was as gentle as I could be but was sure they wouldn’t survive the treatment. I’m pleased to say they tolerated it just fine and are growing nicely!

I saw you do this a year or two ago, and it has worked really well for me so far this year. My mistake was starting them too early, though... I’ve got 8-10” tomatoes that probably shouldn’t be planted out in the tunnel, yet, but might just go ahead and be ready to cover them in case of a cold snap. 😇

Holy Moly that's a lot of Tomato plants! So interested to see how you move forward with these as you clearly know what you're doing. I was hoping to start SIX plants of all the SAME variety of tomato, and I was feelin pretty good about myself, til now, LOL! Well, great video, and may I say you are one ambitious gardener! This was very helpful, and I think the reasoning behind your many starts per pot makes great sense. Thanks for sharing!

I just did this with several plugs of Romas and Beefsteaks! Probably 18-20 plants put in their own bigger pots, I only need about 12 so I'll sell the extras. Love this tutorial!

I seperate seedlings by putting them into a bowl of water. The dirt sinks to the bottom and the roots stay in tact, and you can seperate them easy! Maybe a tip for you too. Greetz from Holland, Hester

I'm doing the same thing this year! I am having a plant sale so I'll up-pot to paper or solo cups for those. This makes it so much easier in my opinion.

This video was very helpful to know that you start your tomatoes indoors. I just got a small greenhouse and I have to run a heater at night and a fan during the day. Let's see if I can germinate tomatoes and peppers out there.

I like this idea - I have been learning and finding starting and dividing them makes for good strong plants - I used to think you had to start them all separate. Because I have an issue to sometimes pull them and breaking roots or tearing stems- I use a fork or chop stick to help tease them apart and I haven’t lost many at all anymore. Had a million cilantro not too long ago and had done the same - and they ALL survived so I gifted a lot of people!! Thank you for adding to my education. Love your book too - I got it when they released!!

I was always told that the roots would be disturbed too much to separate them this way and it never made sense to me! Good to know my instinct was right 😄 Excited to try this method!
