How to run a doorbell camera wire (no existing wire, on siding)(Nest Hello, Arlo, Vivint, Ring)

Want a doorbell camera but don’t have an existing wire? Don’t want to mess with batteries dying on you? Here is a simple way to run a wire so you can use your doorbell camera. Siding makes it super easy. If you notice there was an outlet on the outside of the home, I always like to plug them in on the inside so then it’s not exposed to the weather or having people unplug it. It also makes a clean professional look. Feel free to comment any questions, I’d love to help!

pretty simple stuff but finding a video that confirms what I thought is great. Wish there were more videos that showed installation with no existing wiring
I know what you mean. I'm on the west coast where houses made with siding are pretty much extinct and obsolete.
My frustration is trying to fish the stupid piece of shit wire. I've been trying for 3 days and I'm irritated and frustrated beyond any word known to man kind . I'm getting to the point where I think I'm going crazy and the walls that I'm trying to navigate the wire through are laughing at me, well I'm starting to get to the point where I am going to pick up a sledge hammer and smash through the stucco to connect the ring doorbell to the transformer
I would have sealed the hole before snapping the siding back on but still a nice easy demonstration of how to get power for a doorbell.
Exactly, bugs work 24/7 to find new routes into your walls for nesting, then on into the home!!!!
I love this alternative for installing a door bell camera. I do have existing wires, but, I am not getting the display of power to the system and the existing doorbell system. You provided much insight to fix my issue. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! And I’m glad it helped!
Wow You just saved probably a few hundred to have an electrician hard wire for a doorbell for me for my doorbell camera. I even have an outdoor outlet near by. Sweet!
Awesome! Glad this helped! Just make sure that the transformer you buy is weather rated or that your outlet outside is covered.
Personally I would still drill and plug it inside. But as long as your outlet is covered from the exposed weather you should be fine.
Also one thing to consider is if you do plug it in outside. Make sure the camera can see if anyone walks up to the outlet. That way if anyone try’s to unplug it you’ll have a recorded clip of them doing it!
Thanks again for your comment and for watching! Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions
Dang, never thought of this option. Nice work, sir!
Hey thanks Paul! Hopefully it helps. Thanks for watching!
Wow!! Call me slow or whatever I thought one would have to remove every piece of vinyl off to get to the desired height. Keep up the good work it’s needed and informative.
Haha glad I could help!
Excellent video..the most comprehensive on UA-cam by far! Subscribed
Thanks for the information and I ordering the power supply you said and I can’t wait to have my doorbell camera again
Glad to hear! Thanks for watching and keep me posted on how it goes! Would love to help if you have any questions
Great video thanks. Now I can use this method instead of replacing batteries when needed. Also I had one question. What type of adapter do you recommend when using indoor outlets?
Nice video... quick, to the point and informative. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! Hopefully it helps!
You just helped me so much Thanks!
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
This is a great idea and I found a plug to do this, but 2 questions, shouldn't you put some kind of caulk to stop bugs and the very minor draft? Second what do you do on the inside what do you do on the inside with the wire, do you just wire it up and the put the faceplate on?
I just watched a video of a guy wiring it all the way to the panel lol ! This is the video I’m looking for .
Lol right! So much easier! Thanks for watching! Hopefully it helps
@@tannerthetechnician5252 hello...what is the name of the plug in extension you order from Amazon
Great video! Thank you for sharing, very easy to follow.
Thanks for watching! Hopefully it helps
Interesting, but I think my outlet is closer, how you drill through the installation and the wall out side, how did you seal hole from bugs always seeking a way indoors?
Yes I should have gone over that better. Once the wire is through. It’s good to use a silicone to help fill around the hole.
Thank you for demonstrating the installation. Not sure if it is too late but can you please show us how it looked from inside? Just a picture and you can add that as part of the description too. Thank you for your time.
Hi! Yes sorry I forgot to add that part! And I’m not sure how to add photos now that this has been posted. But basically if you leave a little wire out the corner of the whole on the inside and just let the transformer hang once you screw back in the outlet plate you can then plug it in with seeing very little wire on the inside of your home. Does that help?
@@tannerthetechnician5252 so I have the ring doorbell with the wireless chime. I dont have any transformer. My system need to be hardwired. I assume I can run a wire from the doorbell to the existing light switch on the inside? I'm curious about that and I'm wondering what gauge wire I should use to hard wire the doorbell?
Great simple video thanks.
Thanks for watching! Hopefully that helps!
Awesome demonstration. Thank you much.
You snipped off the Transformer that supposed to plug into the wall, but where did you connect the two wires? Do you have to connect both of the wires to a hot part of the outlet or 1 to the hot and 1 to the cold parts of the outlet ?
Hi, yes I didn’t show that very well in this video. You just plug the transformer into the outlet. You don’t actually wire anything to the outlet. Doorbells are low voltage so that’s why you have to use the transformer. Does that answer your question?
This is so helpful! Really glad I found your video, I just bought the Unifi G4 door and realized that we had a contractor remove our doorbell and chime because it was originally stuck in the corner and no one ever used it. Plus, it was broken and just looked like trash.
I was looking all over at how to install a new transformer and I came across this! One question, what size/length drill bit are you using there? I'm pretty sure I don't have anything that long (sadly, that's what she said) so I'll need to go out and get something
Hahah! That’s the best comment I’ve had lol. I like to use 1/4 size drill bit and one that’s at least 12 inches long. I like the 1/4 in drill bit because it makes the hole big enough to easily get your wire through without making a big hole that you’ll have to silicone or clean up later. Hopefully that helps!
Yeah it’s a lot more common than you think. A lot of people don’t thing about the doorbell wires while remodeling and or just don’t know what the chime box is so they just cut it and cover it.
If your home has siding this is the best way to run a wire without exposing wire on the inside or outside of the home. And it’s honestly pretty simple. (Beats having to cut drywall and have to patch and paint if you ask me!)
Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions.
@@tannerthetechnician5252 12” 🧐 that’s what she said… 😂 Thanks for the video. Just installed ours on siding but using battery. What plug was that and is it safe with ring 2nd gen

Haha thanks for the laugh and thanks for watching. Hopefully that video helped. Battery is great but I’m always a big fan of not relying on battery when it comes to cameras. It’s more work up front to run a wire but in the long run it’s super nice cause then you don’t have to worry about batteries dying.
safe to assume it works for blink as well?
Yes, it will work for any doorbell camera. Just make sure the transformer has the same voltage for the blink camera
Thank you. This was great help!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for watching Ron! Glad to hear it helped!
Thank you!👍
thank you for this video. it helped me so much.
Can you do new install of wired doorbell, running C wire on a brick siding plz.
Hi George! Yes, I have been needing to make a video of ways to run wire when there is brick. They can be a little more tricky at times but very doable! Thanks for your comment. Hopefully here soon I can get that done!
Excellent video brother. Thanks so much for the help!
Will this transformer work for a Blink doorbell. Thank you for this video.
Hi! In the discretion. I just attached the transformers I recommend and yes they will work with Blink.
What does this look like on the inside when you're finished? How does the faceplate go back on if the wire is there?
exactly what i was thinking!!!! WTF
Ya. Would be nice to see how you ran the wire under the outlet cover
Lol I’m sorry! I’ll have to edit a picture in there. If you drill the hole just outside the box. Once you put the plate on it will cover it all up. So you should see little to no wire.
@@tannerthetechnician5252 all good. Just upload a photo to Imgur and drop link in the comments and description. Thanks!!!

I like using these cause it’s a lot cheaper than hiring an electrician to come wire up a transformer in the house. Hopefully this helps!
Where do you install the chime connector for the Nest?
Great question. The doorbell will chime with Google speakers if you have them
@@tannerthetechnician5252, thanks!
What should i ask for when getting the wireless transmitter ? Is there certain brand size ?
Question....can you just run wire off of the plug? Instead of having a bulky plug thats always plugged in?
Great question. So most household outlets put off 120v and most doorbell cameras require 16-20volts. So if you didn’t use the thing that plugs into the outlet it would fry your doorbell camera. The plug (transformer) that I show in the video brings the voltage down from 120 to 16 volts so that way it doesn’t fry the doorbell camera. Does that make sense? Hopefully that helps
@@tannerthetechnician5252 Yes! I wasn't paying attention when you said transformer in the video 😅 That was a dumb question. Sorry bout that lol. I think ima order me one! A lot easier than running all new wire for a doorbell since I don't have one at all
Not dumb at all! Glad you asked! Thanks for watching and let me know if you have other questions. I’d love to help!
@@tannerthetechnician5252 Great response, I was about to ask the same thing, I was not sure about the wire sizes and capacity.
Thank you Soo much ! My husband passed away and I had most of our stuff in my carport of a house we rented. Someone stole everything. I'm hoping to get this set up so I can tell the people to bring my kids stuff back or I'm calling the police. It probably won't work out but im praying it does. My kids are so upset. They loose their dad now everything they got for Christmas and birthdays. I was fortunate that a friend give me the doorbell camera. Hope I can install it right. Wish me luck !!!!
How much voltage dose the blink door bell can use 18v or 12v
Hey I have the Vivint doorbell and my existing doorbell doesn’t work and I don’t have a chime. But have the panel that came with the doorbell. Will this wiring work? Please help
Hi! Yes if you have a vivint doorbell camera it will chime on your phone and on the alarm panel. There is also a setting you can turn on if you have indoor/ outdoor cameras to chime as well if the doorbell is rang. Super cool feature Vivint has.
This is what I'm going to do👍. I'm looking at the transformer you have a link to. Does the wire from the transformer to the door bell have a hot and neutral or doesn't it matter?
Hi sorry for the late response! Most doorbells are AC power so it doesn’t matter. Just make sure you check the box. What model of doorbell cam are you wanting to do?
Or u can just use the outdoor outlet if u have one... Make sure it's waterseal... Lmao
Will this work for a wired ring camera door bell? Hopefully you can answer my question. Thanks 🙏
Yes.
are these transformers compatible with roku cameras?
Yes
Looks like Roku wired doorbell requires 16-24v so you should be good!
NICE!
Thanks!
Should the power to that outlet be shut off when drilling by the box ?
As long as you go on the outside of the box and opposite side of the stud you shouldn’t have to worry about flipping the breaker. I’ve done hundreds of installs like this all over the country and have never had a problem. But it never hurts to be to cautious!
Can this work for my google nest hello?? Or is another easy way?? Thanks
Hi! Yes this will work great for your Google nest doorbell. For homes that don’t have existing wires and that have siding on the outside of your home this is a very simple and clean way to run your wire.
There are easier ways but not the cleanest or most secure. If you have more questions/ concerns let me know and I’d love to help! I’ve installed cameras all over the country so there is a good chance I’m familiar with what you might be facing.
Yo, that's bad ass!
Haha thanks! Thanks for watching. Hopefully it helped
Does this work with the ring wired that came out in 2021?
Following
Yes it looks like the ring doorbell requires 16-24 volts. Which is super common. So just make sure that the transformer you get is 16-24 volt output snd you’ll be good to go!
@@tannerthetechnician5252 I just got the ring wired and am having to do this. I plan on buying the ring plug in adapter 2nd gen. I don't need a resistor though right? And if this is all I need is it okay to plug it into an extension cord?

What is that power block with the wire to power bell called
Hi! Yes little new to the whole UA-cam thing. I just attached the links in the description. Let me know if you have any other questions
Is a window easier, since it does seem less than 10 feet, no drilling would be required, only a small exit hole in the screen corner, and window should close completely onto the wire and still lock? I will go check
I’ve done something similar once on a brick house where I went out the corner of the window. Brick can make it hard to run wires and make it look good at times. But if you have siding. It’s honestly pretty simple to pop it off and on. I like it cause it’s easy to hide the wire and make it look professional
@@tannerthetechnician5252 i have a window near the door, but 2 obstacles: window shutters and a deck not making it easy to pop the siding, will look at other wire running options.
Oh yes that can make it tricky. Sometimes what I’ll do is just run it down on the outside tucked under the siding edge piece and then at the bottom drill straight through into the house right above the baseboard on the inside and then tack the wire along the top of the baseboard and then over to an outlet. You would see a little wire on the inside which might not be ideal but if you tack it right or get hide a wire casing it can look good. I dunno. Hard to tell without seeing it but hopefully this can help get you some ideas! Lol I’m curious how it goes!
Couldn’t you have just hard wired it to the outside outlet right under the doorbell??
Hi, good question. It’s best to plug it inside since the transformer isn’t rated for outdoors.
Thanks for the great tutorial. What size drill bit do you recommend ?
I like 1/4 in and it’s 12 inches long I believe. I like 1/4 because it’s not to big so it’s easy to silicone the hole and it’s not to small so it’s easy to fish the wire through the wall. Make sure you buy one that’s long enough so you can go all the way through the wall.
Hopefully this helps!
I installed my Nest hello yesterday using your method. Looks incredible and was easy to do. Thanks again!!
Haha I love that! Thanks for following up.
1/8 is used for chime wire

What gauge wire do I need to wire my ring exactly like this?
18 gage is preferred.
Will it work for simply safe doorbell camera?
Yes just make sure that when you buy the transformer (plug in part) that it matches the specs for that camera. Most doorbell cameras require 16-24v
Hopefully that helps answer your question!
Do you have a better recommendation for plugs? The one you listed seems to have no short protection and Im reading reviews of them overloading camera

Great question. It depends on the doorbell camera you get. A lot of them have the option to buy chime extenders that you can just plug in anywhere in the home. Like the Google doorbell camera can chime through the Google mini speakers.
What kind of supply is it
Hi! Yes little new to the whole UA-cam thing. I just attached the links in the description. Let me know if you have any other questions

What type of wire should I use for the transformer without the existing wire? (The cordless one)
18/2 wire is typically the best. Depending on your model it could be different. I have used smaller like 22 gage or even cat 5 and that worked just fine. But 18 gage is the most common and the most recommended

I wanted to see you mount that wired doorbell ring. Will those little included screws mount the ring to that siding?
Is there a way you can directly wire the wires to an outlet terminals outside and just run it through the wall to the point where you want it installed?
Unfortunately no. The voltage coming off the outlet is very different that what you get coming off a transformer. You need to use the transformer or else you will blow your doorbell camera every time.

So no pro here, but couldnt you have just wired a transformer into that exterior outlet and ran up to the ring?
Also not a pro, but do you think you could explain how to do this? Or link to a video that does? I’d rather hardwire to a transformer, than run a wire to an inside outlet. (Although I do appreciate that option!)
Great question! Most transformers aren’t weather resistant and it also exposes the risk of someone unplugging it. I always try and plug them inside if possible even if it means a little extra work to pop it inside :)
Help! I ran the wire through the trim and up to the door bells location, but now everytime someone rings the door bell my wife runs out of the house and jumps into Ryan's car and they are out all night.
Would it like to see the rest of the installation until the ring is ser completely, too bad you just showed the wiring placement.
dude why didnt you use the existing out door plug thats like right there, right next to the door. YES, just a "few moments after" i thought about that, that it is exactly like putting a door knob backwards by having the lock on the exterior side of the house lol or like installing a door with the hinges on the outer side of the house lol. not safe at all cuz any one can come and pull the 3 hinges out and walk right in...
ORRRR anyone can just come and that someone happens to be that 1 out of 10 awaken mind that knows such things like "common sense" and realize that the camera bell installer is a dum-dum ring bell installer for FKN-UP on security lol..
But, me as a magiver dude and understand electricity well enough, have an idea, well more of a question,
"could the door bell be connected to the 1st closes outer receptacle by hard wiring it and pig tailing power to door bell? i dont see why not and also people wont have easy access to it, i mean how are they even going to know the ring bell power source is that plug if wires be hidden
Lol loved your comment. Yes plug it inside, not only for security purposes but also to keep it safe from the rain/weather. It also makes it look more professional than having it plugged in outside where anyone can see it.
Unfortunately you need to use the plug in transformer so then you get the right voltage. If you try and hardwire it directly in you’ll blow your doorbell.
This looks like a very unsafe way to install as the wire is accessible from the outside of the house still. Meh.
How do you install the chime?
Great question. Most doorbell cameras have wireless chimes you can plug into the house. For example the Google nest doorbell camera can chime through the Google mini speaker.
