Indonesia has declare independence in 1945 but the Dutch coming attack and then Dutch surrender in 1949.. so in the Dutch perspective Indonesia's independence is 1949 but for Indonesian is 1945.
Fact till now
That is why there is the term "mempertahankan kemerdekaan"
Yups... The Netherlands is an aggressor...
Dutch not surrender but. We never surrender tho
Dutch has officially recognized Indonesia's independence in 1945 in their parliament recently.
Damn, I have just found the fact that Indonesia is the only ex-colonized nation that refused to use their former colonial master's language. That should explain why neither English or Dutch become first language in Indonesia and I find that cool as hell. I have just found that my country Japan ever colonized Indonesia and I am sorry for that. In Japan, we are never told about atrocities our country has ever done.
Japan then is not like japan now, 3,5 years of japan’s colonialization in indonesia is worse than 350 years of dutch colonialization
@@thebinalz Sadly like other ex-colonizers, Japan refused to openly admit the wrongdoings they did. This is shameful to my country. I am surprised that Indonesia has made a lot of progress like now. Indonesia in my opinion is not a backwater country anymore, with huge over 1 trillion GDP, Indonesia is not a country to push over. If Indonesia can make use its domestic market at maximum, Indonesia can be an economic powerhouse.
It's all good now. We Indonesians dont hate Japan because those who colonized us were just some greedy people and did not represent the majority of Japanese, who are friendly to foreigners.
It's disgusting that Japan government covered up all their crimes in WW2 all over Asia. No wonder so many elderly Asians still hate Japanese so much. Just like my parents.
true 😂😂 we did not speak Dutch nor Japanese not even Portugies.
Indonesia declared its independence in 1945.
Indonesian sees the time between 1945~1949 as *defending* their independence, *not trying to gain* their independence.
Yeah !
Same as US. Although Britain recognized US independence in 1783, the official year of US independence remains 1776.
yesss betul sekali
@@dragonemperor202 what do you mean by lost? there's no such a thing as 100% win in reality. if what you meant by losses was human lives, resources, etc. and you can check every nation that wanted to go into independent path, wouldn't get recognised by their 'supposedly superior'. just a simple google research and you could find dozens of em.
@@theoddplebs its loss of everything... They win because the nuance of the world are against colonization, Indonesia are forced to do the negotiation agreement because they lost the war... Even their president are captured and their capital are moved, in a desperate attempt they sold themselves to the USA by selling the Papua to freeport mcmahon and signed the agreement to pay the war loan almost 1 billion dollar
I really hate this sentence ""In December 27,1949 finally Indonesia gain its independence". . It should be written "In December 27, 1949, the Dutch has no choice and declare to withdraw from Indonesia".
Yeah ! From August 17, 1945 Indonesia fights Dutch as one whole country. That's why

No, clearly they(Dutch) did, this is not about perspective, stop hypocrisy statement about "perspective", that's such a bullcrap
This is basically how it’s seen from the Dutch’s point of view, Indonesia has its own version. Thank you for the effort, but you’ve made some mistakes, including mistaking Suharto for Sukarno, and calling Sukarno ‘Achmed Sukarno’ which was never his name.
Sukarno was just Sukarno, he didn’t have the usual Western ‘first name-family name’ naming pattern. He was born Kusno Sosrodiharjo, son of Raden Sukemi Sosrodiharjo and Ida Ayu Nyoman Rai, but he never did use his father’s surname of Sosrodiharjo and went by a single name, Sukarno.
"Achmed Sukarno" is never his name indeed. But he used it when it comes to international delegacy, let's say it's for the purpose on his pasport. Since I doubt people use single name at those times.
As for his name, indeed his birth name is Kusno Sorodiharjo. But there's story when he still young, he often get sick. Thus his father changed his name to "Soekarno" since birth certificate isn't a thing way back then. "Soe" means good, while there's several interpretation behind the meaning of "Karno".
@@spacetator69 he never used the name ‘Achmed’ as such. Whenever asked whether ‘Achmed’ was his name, he pointed out that the only name he had was the name given to him by his parents, Sukarno. But he didn’t mind it either, as the name أحمد has a good meaning in Arabic (‘praised’).
As for the origin of the name ‘Achmed’ we don’t know for sure, but the most popular theory that it came from Indonesian students in Egypt. According to historian Rushdie Hoesein, Indonesian students actively campaigned for Indonesia’s independence within the years 1946-1947 using Islam as the main sentiment to gain Egyptian support. When asked whether the president was a Muslim, a prominent student from Indonesia named Zein Hasan claimed that the president’s name was Ahmad Soekarno to prove that he was indeed a Muslim.
That was how he was known as Ahmad Soekarno in Middle Eastern countries. The theory was, the Western media picked it up from there, and as they’re not used to the idea of having a single name, they happily accepted it as the truth. The name ‘Achmed’ is specifically popular in German and Dutch where it fits their orthography.
Birth certificate has always been a thing even since colonial time, known as ‘geboorteakte’ then. Going by only one single name is normal in Indonesia, it’s not until recently that the government changed the regulation for passports to have at least two names on them. सु- (su-) indeed means ‘good’ or ‘pure’ while ‘कर्ण (karna) is a character from Mahabharata, his name bears the meaning of ‘ear’ in Sanskrit. In common Javanese dialect ‘karna’ becomes ‘karnå’ but transliterated as ‘karno’ due to limitation in standard Latin alphabet.
Hence ‘Sukarno’ means ‘good Karna’ (Karna was loyal to the antagonistic Kauravas in Mahabharata) or ‘good ear’ or maybe a ‘good listener’ if that sounds better.
@@kilanspeaks this is great explaination, I have lack of knowledge about his delegacy toward middle easts and the birth certificate during the VoC/dutch era. Thank you kilan

One of critical reasons why the US retreaded its support for the netherland was because the republic although crushed, in fact it was not completely eradicated, and by that period many republican leaders who tended toward the left started to seek armed support from the soviet and china. Now imagine what would happen if a spark that the netherland failed to extinguish, was instead refuled by the east bloc. Indonesia will become the first pandemonium of the 3th WW. Especially when the netherland stubbornly tried to hold new guinea. You can see how seriously indonesian was in matters regarding their independece, adding fact that soviet was also known to generously shares their nukes like they are sharing som kind of biscuits to their allies
Make sense, remembering they have the manniest nukes in the world
Yes, and Soviet had full support to Indonesia during conflict with the Dutch on New Guinea, Indonesia military become the largest in the region during the conflict, due to soviet military equipment flooded Indonesia and big war after WW II would be started and escalated immediately. USA know this and withdrawed their support on the Dutch, this made the Dutch under power against Indonesia Military, then they're retreated.

That's the western version of Indonesia especially from dutch perspective.
In Indonesian perspective, the discussion of united Indonesia already started in 1928, as Indonesian called as youth pledge where many scholar from different part of dutch-indies make a convention
The japan and dutch military aggression basically the same
But one element that completely cut off from that story is the Indonesian diplomacy that convince many kingdoms in java, Sumatra, birneo, bali, sulawesi, etc to united under one flag which is Indonesia
They support indonesian independence movement by donating their gold and money, giving their army and also their land even authority as a king to join Indonesia

One thing to underline is with every agreement, the one who break them first was always Dutch. And even at the end, in the round table agreement Dutch only recognize United State of Indonesia under Sovereign of The Netherlands. So up until recently they still don't recognize Republic of Indonesia as its own country.

Indonesia declared itself independent on 17 August 1945, however the Dutch didn't recognize it and tried to come back with force. In december 1949 the Federal Republic of Indonesia was created and this time with Dutch cooperation. After 8 months this F.R. of Indonesia was disbanded and became part of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia. Until now the Dutch has refused to recognize the date of Indonesian Independence in August 1945.

You should emphasize that Soekarno was basically forced to declare independence by the young revolutionaries. They literally kidnap him and Hatta(who soon to be the forst vice president ) and pressure them to proclaim independence at 17th of August. Soekarno was notoriously known as japanese collaborator. And he initially wanted to delay the proclamation to avoid Japan's harsh reaction. While the young revolutionaries convinced that it needs to be done ASAP after japans surrender to the allies.

Indonesia adalah satu-satunya negara yg berdiri atas perjuangan. Yg belum ada menjadi ada. Itulah Indonesia.

Proud to be Indonesian. Thanks for the review. ❤
The Dutch refuses to recognize 1945 as the independence of Indonesia, because otherwise they have to pay the compensation of invading a sovereign country between 1945-1949.
The decolonization process internationally continued into the 1970s, which in retrospect is an amazingly lengthy period.
What do you mean?
@@hebneh Which one? Indonesia one?
@@hebneh Then it last until 21st century. Indonesian colony of East Timor became independent in 2002. Come to think of it, there is another Indonesian colony of West Papua that has not been liberated.
@@boulderbash19700209As an Indonesian, I acknowledge that East Timor (Timor Leste) is not part of Indonesia, this is evidenced by that East Timor is not a Dutch colony, while all parts of Indonesia must be former Dutch colonies. Indonesia did make a mistake by invading East Timor, although in fact it recruited East Timor into a special province, and prospered it. However, due to different historical backgrounds, we (Indonesia) had to conduct a referendum so that there would be no bloodshed. Meanwhile, for Papua and Aceh, it is still historically bound to be part of the Dutch colony. If all Austronesian peoples were united, then this country could stretch from the Philippines, but all of them have different histories.
It is hard when Europe & even America are colonists
what makes me really hurt is how they say Indonesia has to pay for all the facilities that the Dutch made in Indonesia, it's very, very sad that we are in debt, from 1960 to 2002 Indonesia was struggling to pay debts to the Dutch, but the Dutch forgot how the VOC greedily extracted resources. Indonesia's power, and making it the richest company ever, surpassing the wealth of the Mark Zuckerberg Tesla company and the 10 richest companies in the world will not be able to match the VOC's wealth, but if in the past Indonesia had the power and collected Indonesia's wealth which was stolen by the VOC for 350 years, the Netherlands I won't be able to pay it any time.. sometimes I think thanks to Germany after invading the Netherlands which made the Dutch internal and military weak in their government, and at that time almost at the same time as Japan's expansion into Indonesia which made the Dutch military weak inside and outside, the momentum was very right for Indonesia to achieve independence and against the Dutch
During 1948 phase Indonesian army had to deal Communist and Islamist uprising in west java and east java but can quelled. This make USA strongly favor Indonesia over Dutch because seeing the Indonesian government is anti communist

Indonesians took their Independence chance after USA dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as it weakened Japan's Army in Indonesia after they took it from Dutch.
After the Allied won the war, Dutch came back and annulled the Independence of Indonesia. Indonesians tried to fight back the Dutch through diplomacy. After years and years finally Dutch recognized the Independence of Indonesia.
I'm really grateful for All the Unsung Heroes who fought for Indonesia's Independence. Can't imagine how it feels born in the war. Mengheningkan Cipta😔

I got goosebumps when Soekarno-Hatta declared war, they're not afraid and just being adamant to defend our independence declaration in 1945.
At that time, we literally have nothing against the Dutch and British.
Japan really helped Indonesia achieve independence, even though the Japanese tortured it more cruelly than the Dutch.
Because japanese realized that they would lost in WW II. So japanese promised independence for indonesians. It was atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki that changed all. Japanese surrendered to allied. So there was a vacuum administration in Indonesia. The Independence was declared as soon as possible. So our independence was not japanese giving.

Awalnya Belanda hanya buka kota perdagangan.
Bukan Negara..
Nama Negara itu milik Bangsawan Jawa artinya Kerajaan..
Jadi Negara itu artinya Kerajaan nama Negara sudah lama ada sekitar 500; Tahun..
Contoh: Bojo negoro dsb nya...
Jadi siapa sebenarnya yang menjajah??
Kerajaan..
Negara itu ya Kerajaan.
Sedangkan VOC cuma kota perdagangan, jualan.
Ibarat Buka Mall.. . dilain sisi Saham VOC juga bukan milik Belanda sendiri semua Raja kampung ditawarkan beli saham VOC.. itu Abad 16-17...
Jadi bukan penjajahan

Wow, you're so informed about this, I'm touched. But, let me correcting some little things:
- 1811 - British occupied Indonesia by force from Netherland, end by British got Malaca, the Malaysia, Indonesia was still by the hand of Netherland and some to Portuguese.
- 1945 - Indonesia gained independent from Japan, not Netherland, it was when Hiroshima(Aug 6) and Nagasaki(Aug 9) got bombed. Netherland couldn't occupy Indonesia at that time cz war with Germany
- 1945,1946 - British army came to Indonesia to take control of the situation but in actuality they came with Netherland army and wanted to occupy Indonesia and it soon cause war again.
Nederlands-Indonesische rondetafelconferentie was the negotiation name that finally make Netherland back down. (There's 1 last thing after that, war for West New Guinea, end in 1969).
The Dec 27th 1949 peace agreement did not include west papua and east timor.

I'm glad someone spoke up about this, as someone who lives in indonesia Sumatra, so much happened during the 20th century. Japan and Netherlands both invaded us, the Japan one was more brutal though since my ancestors' ears were being chopped off then forcing them to eat the ears and raped infront of each other, they were not making us independant, they were torturing us. Netherlands mostly inavded us, stole recourses and lived there alongside with terrorizing us but it wasn't as brutal as Japan's, Theres still many buildings from Netherlands here in Indonesia. Sorry if this is wrong, these are my ancestors' experiences.
This is important video, as most Indonesian believe that we won the war purely by our own. When in fact, the international community both Arab and the US played a crucial role in securing Indonesian status. Without them, specially the US, we probably still under the Dutch crown.
I think it would only have postponed it for 20 years. Indonesia was one of the first colonies who became independent, but in the next 30 years all colonies became independent. I think it would have been too difficult for the Dutch to hold Indonesia.

Good outline of the Indonesian Revolution. It could have talked a bit more about the Battle of Surabaya, which is regarded as the starting point of the conflict. The Dutch also retained West New Guinea until 1962, which led to a dispute with Indonesia. That could be covered in another video.
How do you find these footages? 9 years of school in Indonesia and i've never seen so much old footage of Indonesian before proclamation was announced in 10 minutes. Best we had at a presentations were just pictures and the teacher would explain what happened here and there.

Majority of Indonesian thinks we won our independence by battle and diplomacy but it is not actually correct. Indonesia has to pay huge amount of money to the Dutch in order for them to acknowlegde Indonesia's Sovereignty. It was for compensation of the cost that the Dutch spent in waging war against Indonesia from 1945-1949 appx 4.5 Billion Dutch Gulden. We managed to pay it fully in 2003. I heard the money was borrowed by Dutch from *USA* . So basically Indonesian funded USA + Dutch to invade Indonesian teritory. Thats the weirdest part of this story 😂
It has cost Indonesia a lot of blood, sweat, tears and money to become independent. Without struggle and diplomacy, Indonesia could not become independent.
are you kidding? where are you from, you make arguments like that are you originally from Indonesia? My only thought is that if the country is independent, you have to pay better if we go to war again. understand it in your mind
@@harryblack7323 if my country was formed without war then why did the westerners conspire to bring down my country? my country for the sake of independence is willing to fight against anyone, my country last fought against the British allies even though by ganging up solo vs squad.🤣🤣🤣🤣

I still don't get why the majority of Indonesian people don't hate their colonialists, especially the Dutch. China and Korea even to this day really hate Japan. But why do Indonesians, especially the younger generation, really love Japan and everything about Japan?
Bcoz of Japan soft power supremacy
you don't understand our history, japan empire were founded by the netherland to international in 16 century, while malay kingdom were sabotage from international in 16 century, for example denmark-uk-bantam sultanate relationship just because of catholic war, indonesia is not recognize until 19 centuries, netherland become the international leader which is a form of corruption they don't want to look not nice, when japan attack, indonesian is happy not because we like japan but because we got out of "isolation, prison and free from 300 years iliteration and no education" we feel something finally changed, but they gave us different suffering mostly physical tho, white ppl interacialism with indonesian is a form of socialist propaganda we don't find it ethical because asutronesian study are not yet happen we will lost our authenticity, also east-asian immigrant hate for being left alone with no documentation no interacialism and batavia massacre in 17 centuries done by malay protestant and european.
due to this we don't hate japan because dutch-east indies is dutch republic of asia not malay republic so it is netherland-japan problem/war not us and it already done with philip-sony relationship, while the netherland left us with communist republic and no international relationship but none-sense discrimination about little things like humanitarian issue that mostly misunderstood and some shit, even tho netherland should be the one who introduce us to the world.
we choose who to hate and we wise about it, our problem is within the republic we simply not yet have any history with the emperor.
