- During the Indonesian War of Independence (1945 - 1949) / Politionele Acties the Dutch did commit war crimes against the Indonesians where the tried to keep Indonesia as a colony of the Netherlands: the Dutch East Indies (Nederlands-Indië), sometimes known as "De oost" (The East). In this video I present an overview of the biggest crimes. The most infamous was the South Celebes Affair (Zuid-Celebes-Affaire) where Dutch commandos led by captain Raymond Westerling shot and killed many people of the region. Then there was also the Rawagede Massacre.

Essentially, you are right (one could speak also of Portugal in Africa during the 70's ; and one cannot skip the enormity of "neo"-colonial crimes perpetrated by America, in Indochina, Iraq...).
But, structurally, you may be wrong : colonial or neocolonial powers didn't wage their wars with genocidal intentions in the first place. Germany did and committed crimes on an unprecedented scale (by the millions) with clear and clearly stated genocidal intentions (of the Jews, of the Polish People, of the Russians, of the Gypsies, etc.). There is an order of magnitude and intention different there and they built a huge apparatus for systematic mass murders, implying almost all their soldiers and large parts of their population, too (most of Germans somewhat knew their country was committing indicible acts !).

The Dutch suffered for 5 years under German occupation, only to go to war against a country that doesnt want to be ruled by the Dutch. After the war its military did horrible things.
Its because the country didn't exist. It would basically be if people in Zeeland started killing everyone they didn't like and then claimed to be another people, but it making even less sense.

There could have also not been war if the indonesians decided to do it diplomatic. Its not all that black and white as if the dutch were evil villians and the indonesians were heroes. Indonesians helped japanese put dutch in camps and treated them horribly. Now i won’t say that the dutch were the good guys. Certainly not. But most men probably did not even wan’t to fight that war
The Dutch government decided to wage a war in a foreign country to reestablish a colonial empire. It didnt notice that all colonial empires were about to end. In this war there were no heroes.

Even though the Indonesian independence war is handled in detail including all the horrible things that happened, when i was in school(13+ years ago) they were still called politionele acties, aka police actions. I hope thats different now since they were simply brutal suppression campaigns. Most Dutch people are aware of the crimes of our country there. But there is the Bersiap...

@Sahib maybe,When in 1949, maybe his family decided to stay in Indonesia (become residents there) instead of returning to the Netherlands, in my area there are still Dutch descendants from before 1949 who cannot return to the Netherlands, because their documents are incomplete so they cannot return to the country origin

One of my uncles was sent to fight in Indonesia. I discovered this kind of by accident because the family never talks about it. My father, fortunately, didn't have to go because of health reasons. His military time was all spent in the Netherlands. Brother Andrew in his book "God's Smuggler" discusses his experience during the conflict. It wasn't very positive. Thanks for not sugar-coating it.

There is not much to be found about Poncke Princen.
He was a Dutch soldier who defected to Indonesia.
After the war he was exiled from the Netherlands.
I think that the Moluccan population in the Netherlands in particular would not accept it if he were rehabilitated.
My stepfather was Dr. G.L. Cleintuar and a good friend of Tjalie Robinson. They wrote about the feeling of displacement being Indonesians transferred to The Netherlands after the atrocities the Dutch committed after 45 in Indonesia. The Dutch acted like the Nazis did in Europe. Many Indonesians were killed, tortured, raped, and children also mistreated. It is often denied, but those Dutch never showed any mercy.

Thank you for this piece of history. I'm a Dutch Indo (from my mother) born in the US. My mother and grandparents left Indonesia in the mid 1950s for Holland and eventually immigrated to the US. My grandfather passed before I was born and my grandmother was very secretive about her past. But I do know she loved and missed Indonesia.

But one thing that i found interesting is, my grandpa never held grudge against Dutch because even though he fought against Netherland Empire, he was once saved by them when my grandpa was under Japanese custody, and we're all know how Japanese treated prisoner back then

Very well presented . Most people would think the Dutch would want to rebuild their country , after more than 4 years of German occupation and massive bombing raids . Obviously , oil and natural products from the East Indies , played a part in the Dutch decision to re occupy this land . Even so , the time and effort , must have been horrific and in the end , proved futile .

Amazed that Indonesian war of independece was relatively unknown outside of Indonesian and the Dutch people. If i'm not mistaken this was the very first war of independence against western colonialist after WW2 with many participants (Indonesian, Dutch, Brits, Gurkha, Japanese) involved and the scale was quite massive too, from Sumatera to Java to Bali to Sulawesi were engulfed with battles, also the war crimes commited by parties, and the communist attempt to take control of Indonesia. So complicated.
Indeed, it was massive and you're right: when users ask me to recommend English books on this war I dunno any. Only Dutch books.
All Indonesian students are taught Indonesian war of independence. But it's the dumbed-down, sanitized version of it.
The worst is our history book always said the dutch always the first to provoke the conflict.

I think that any Country that had an "Empire" would have been guilty of War Crimes at any time and anywhere. In South East Asia though, the collapse/surrender of the Imperial Japanese forces, as stated in the video, provided a vacum for power. Most of South East Asia had been occupied by the Japanese...When invaded, these Countries looked to thier "Imperial Masters" for support......None came. No wonder the people of those Countries thought..."If our Imperial overlords cannot protect us, we will protect ourselves". Now the biggest "Can of Worms" starts to open in South East Asia that will continue untill 1975. Great video, the information was inteligently and thoughtfully explained. Well done sir.
I agree. Every country that once ruled another country must've had these things. Yet, some occupiers were worse than others. I think that the average Asian was better off under British, than under Japanese rule in the 1930s for example. Thank you for replying!

Underlining this content, Raymond Westerling are one of the most notorious killing machine from Dutch red beret army (DST) and sadly he never got convicted over the war crimes he committed.

if you know that the Dutch don't have manners because after the Japanese occupied Indo-Malay they agreed to the proposal for the union of the two countries. the problem was that after the departure of the Japanese from Indonesia, the Dutch returned to Indonesia using a strong military, they used money from Marshall plan assistance from the USA, and Indonesia, which was still weak, had to face the giant Dutch military to death until finally there was no other choice for Indonesia to ask for Soviet assistance. At that time Nasution had asked for help from the USA but was refused because the Netherlands was their ally in Europe to defeat the Nazis (Germany) and fortunately for Malaysia they had been promised British independence but were still waiting for Indonesia and the unfortunate thing was that at that time the Indonesian president Soekarno was close to the Soviet Union (communists) then at that time Britain did not agree to merge Malaysia and Indonesia because there was a cold war going on. that's why Soekarno, who was angry at that time, carried out an operation to attack Malaysia because Indo-Malay should have become one. that's why the Netherlands didn't have adap and if at that time there was no European colonization I'm sure Nusantara will unite because they are indeed one and separated because of the interests of westerners

The kingdom in Indonesia occupied many places whose territory should not have been this small because of the Dutch. the Indonesian empire defeated the Mongolian invasion and defeated the Portuguese and expelled them and even those cunning Dutchmen would never have been able to conquer the great kingdoms of Indonesia were it not for their cunning mind. How could this small country from faraway Europe, which at that time was also being controlled by the Spanish Empire, be able to control trade in Indonesia if it were not for their barbaric nature and rotten brains to dominate Indonesia, meaning that we could defeat Portugal, it was impossible for the small Netherlands. we can't beat

But after the second world war, my country was very poor because of the occupation by Germany.
That is why we needed loans from Uncle Sam with was only possible if we withdraw from the east indies giving the Javanese Soekarno free play to colonize the other islands of the Archipel.

Dutch warcrimes in Indonesia are well documented. You can read about it if you are willing to search for it.Even captain Westerlng wrote in his bio with pride about his methods of contraterreur. During my youth uncles told about gevechtspatrouilles (eq.LRRP) in which they shot prisoners after an action (to big a nuisance to take them with them during patrol). We, the dutch did not want to read or discuss about such warcrimes. We protested against the US about My Lai while we had our own massacre in Rawagede. I am glad that this recent history is getting in the dutch mainstream/canon and that we can have a better and more open understanding of what happened in the former Dutch East Indies.

Very interesting and brave video. It's important to know the facts, regardless of how we judge them, reasons, extenuating circumstances, what the other side did, what the consequences should be, etc. A war crime is a war crime regardless, and only honesty can bring about progress.
This part of history (everything related to the East Indies I mean, not just the crimes) is heavily underrepresented in history, although the interest and awareness is increasing in these last years when there are still some people alive who witnessed it. Lots of books, from critical investigations to family histories.

wow! thank you for the video! i come from South Celebes and actually as far as i recall correctly, i never learned anything about the south sulawesi campaign of 1946-1947 at school until i watched this! (or i mightve slept during my history classes or missed it while reading idk,, usually history class subject only revolve around java and sumatra island so im convinced i wouldve remembered it if i really have seen it before). my grandparents are only like 4 y.o when the tragedy occured so i cant really question them that much. but for pointing out in this video, it was already so helpful. still not sure how to feel abt this westerling dude though for now ugh.., but ill keep on doing my research more in the future.

Thank you very much about this episode of our history in Indonesia many facts I didn't k now or have ever heard and even no lessons at school in the 60's.
All the western powers with colony's have a history with black pages in it and also our country the Netherlands.
I think the violence in this episode came from both sites, but war crimes are made in every war or conflict and are even made nowadays.
I know my uncle has been in Indonesia, but he never told me about it, saw his coffin with military registration number once.
So many thanks for this historical review as a part of our own Dutch history.

Thanks for this video (series). My grandfather (rest in peace) was a conscript and was there for 2 years.
I was also not in the Dutch education system after elementary school, so I never got to learn this chapter of Dutch history.
I never got to ask him about his time, but my father told me he tried asking the same when he was younger and my grandfather didn't want to talk about it. I would like to believe he hasn't done anything bad. After all, he was never racist against Indonesians (4 of his 7 kids ended up marrying/having kids with people with Indonesian background, my father and uncle also married Asian women). My Dutch side, as funny as it sounds, is majority (part) Asian.
He apparently mentioned he has discharged his rifle on some occasions, but said he never knew whether he had actually shot anyone. The chaos of war, I guess.
A half century after he was deployed there, he went back to visit together with my grandmother, whom he left behind for the war. He seemed to have had a great time, although was hesitant to go at first. I suppose he's always felt guilt for having been there and being associated with KNIL.

The funniest thing about the Dutch and Belgians, that they flex their muscles and bully weaker defenseless nations, but when they get against real warriors of the German army, they get their asses kicked in few weeks. Hahaha.

Dutch army had still equipment from the days of ww1, the german army had tanks airplanes, fallschirmjäger and waffen ss and more soldiers plus modern equipment, still they had much trouble to win the fight thanks to the Dutch army of that time, in my eyes heroes that would have fought longer if Rotterdam wasn't bombed. So looks like you win the darwin award, congratulations.

Good morning... I live in the village of Suro Baru, Province of Bengkulu, Sumatera... I read a bit about Indonesian History and through my readings I came across differents facts... for example when the Japanse army arrived in Indonesia a lot of Indonesian people welcomed them as liberators from the Dutch colonials... is that really what happened ?

I would answer that it is true.
However, Westerners find this fact unpleasant and ignore it.
Good coverage of such a sensitive topic. I agree, both sides must have committed warcrimes one way or another, it was a lawless mess back then. From what I've heard, my paternal grandfather's unit did guerilla shenanigans in the East Java region at the time. I can imagine they may have faced unsavory situations much like what the Dutch side were facing, the war wasn't all roses and rainbows afterall. Looking forward to your Indonesian side of the story!

As always a joy to watch and learn. I remember some stories of soldiers that served there. There were the ones that didn’t want to tell much. Some that only told the happy parts of their stay. But almost none that told about combat. That makes me think… I am looking forward when you cover the period directly after the japanese lost power and before Dutch soldiers arrived. I heared it was really bad.

During that interim period there was heavy fighting between the British and the Indonesians due to the murder of the British commanding officer whilst negotiating a non-violence treaty.

I really love your videos and learning about the history of Indonesia during the Second World War and after it hits home for me in a big way my grandfather was born in Surabaya 1931 and was made a Japanese pow in 1942 after his father was killed and his mother taken to a different pow camp his siblings were in The Hague during the Nazi occupation. My grandfather spent his early teenage years in the pow camp until liberation in 1945 unfortunately soon after he was put in an Indonesian prison due to his family’s wealth and influence he’d eventually be released in 1951. Unsure of the fate of his parents and siblings he was fortunate to be reunited with his mother relocating to the Netherlands shortly after by this time however his siblings had left going to other European countries or to Australia and New Zealand where my grandfather would travel to eventually and coincidentally be informed his oldest brother had brought wife and for young boys to start a new life in Christchurch New Zealand where he remained starting a family of his own. We never got many stories from my grandfather due to the onset of alzheimers at a young age due to ptsd and the plethora of other illnesses he was subjected during the war but thanks to my grandfather I have learnt allot about struggle and resilience. A war I didn't hear of. Thank you for bring light to this none Dutchman. As an American I know of our own conflicts against colonial assets like the Filipino Insurrection. But I never heard of the Indonesian War of Independence.

after WW2 until 1960's, there were hundred thousends of dutch people still living in Indonesia, many of them had opted indonesia nationality.
but not many of indonesians at the time were not well educated. they thought all dutch people are evil. the dutch and indo people were suffering from hostility and prejudice towards them.
And many came back afterwards.
And many were forced to leave indonesia in mid 50's and Indonesia suffered massive brain drain ever since.

@@aghileshemdani3144 The brain drain at that time seriously affecting our country especially in terms of architectures and urban plannings, two major studies that were excelled/well known most by the Dutch since the time when the Dutch start to do exodus back to Netherlands is also coincidented with the times when major cities in Indonesia (especially Jakarta) experiencing its first wave of massive population boom/urbanization. Had that brain drain did not happened then surely we would not have to study again from zero learning why buildings/infrastructures build during colonial era had better resistance against earthquakes compared with most buildings we had today. Also there's a very obvious reasons why Dutch era buildings had better air circulations compared with most buildings we had today.

Well, it was a while. One of my mother's ancestors was the head of the VOC in the Coromandel and Ceylon (Eastern India and Sri Lanka) for a few years. I think it was in the 18th century. It would be interesting to know more of it. I only know he was sent there to clear the diplomatic mess his predecessor caused by having an intimate relation with a daughter of a sultan or something.

My father was in the British Army at the time of the Japanese Surrender. Whilst he was in the Dutch East Indies 1945/6 the British re-armed some Japanese to guard Dutch nationals imprisoned to keep them safe from reprisals by the local populace...

WW2 , Korea and Vietnam I knew but combat action in the Philippines , Surinam and civilian actions in Indonesia were surprising . I only know he never spoke of them . These were post ww2 pre korea

Sensitive topic Stefan. I too have family serving in the politionele acties, they never spoke about it. The stories about the Bersiap are dreadful. The government did not want to give up the colony 'indie verloren, rampspoed geboren' but want way too far in defending it. The DST actions were all covered and known by Gen Spoor but are a black page in dutch history....
But I do have a double feeling when I read the comments here on 'Dutch soldier overseas=war criminal'. There is more to that. As you mention Stefan, most conscripts were just sent while the motherland was in ruins. They never went abroad and were badly lead on an impossible mission. The one and only thing my uncle always said: 'it was he or me.....'

People must be informed about all its aspects, including also the atrocities committed by the Indonesian side (I am going to be accused again of discrediting the liberation movement of the colonized nations... I just want the whole picture.)

Yeah, the British committed many atrocities in Kenya as did the French in Algeria, no one let go of their colonies easily.

My step opa fought as a conscript. He told me that some former Japanese imperial soldiers fought along side the Indonesian freedom fighters. Is there any evidence of that?
There are examples of this yes. There is actually also cases some Japanese fought on the side of the British in and around Surabaya.
