Finally. A professional mech posting valuable accurate instruction. Thank you!!!
I just ordered a kit yesterday and it comes tomorrow. I pray this works for me.
Good man! You save the customer a tidy sum make a decent profit and have both a customer for life and free word of mouth advertising. You rock good sir
Thank You for taking the time out of your busy day to post this. Extremely helpful and you are very thorough at your work.
I don't even own a truck let alone anything with a Triton of any sort, but this was both entertaining and informative!
Haaaaaa Haaaaaa got sucked in that's what a good presentation will do to ya😁🍿
Was doing plugs yesterday on a 2000 4.6 with 175k miles. Engine ran bad, had mixed coils, and a mix of Autolite and Motocraft plugs. Plugs were so worn some had gaps around .090. Had a save-a-thread insert come out with a plug. Now I know what to fix that with. Thanks for the great videos.
just put some good strong lock tight on the thread saver and screw it back into your cylinder head with a new spark plug screwed into it! tighten down to about 20,ft,lbs NO TIGHTER or you may strip it right out!
Did you fix it? I had a save a thread come out
Love your honesty Experience cannot be over valued. As a pro, licensed 1966. Much appreciated Ron
Knowledge gained watching you use the CalVan repair tool. I recently subscribe to your channel after watching BMW K1200LT arm rest installation. Thumbs up on your presentation and explanation
Absolutely awesome and informative video! Just went through this exact same situation. Wish I could find a local mechanic this cool and honest. Thanks!
Oh thank u for blessing us with your UA-cam expertise !
I'm glad to see a honest review of the inserts. I just found out about them last night when I was ordering some spark plugs for my expedition. It was a separate section right under for the regular spark plugs and I believed it said repair threads spark plug. I open that part up and seen what they were selling. Then I googled it to see more about it.
Right off the bat I was trying to figure out if it's using the original threads how is that insert going to stay in there and not pop a plug again. Your review was the first one I found that confirmed what I thought last night.
Good video and if I ever have one pop on me I'm definitely going with this set of tools.
You sir just saved me nearly $1000. I can’t express how grateful I am.
I think you can 😁 send him a cake or something as a mechanic I love when happy customers send goodies
I've been doing spark plug thread repairs since the 1970's and watched video as I've never heard of Cal-Van before.
Glad you found something you have success with and like although the cost seems incredibly high to me. (when I started shop charged £6 - around $10 at the time for a basic Helicoil fitting with no 'special' work needed)
I've made inserts when heads are damaged that badly, 7075 aluminium , bronze and even mild steel, just make a size for a stock tap (inch or metric), just large enough diameter to clear damaged area (I trained as a precision machinist, 5 micron tolerance).
The other alternative is to have plug hole welded up then re-machine it but that is often more expensive than a replacement head
I assumed Cal-Van may be something that prevented galvanic corrosion but look like stock stainless steel (304?, 316?)
One thing you are 100% wrong about is the Helicoil sizes, if that fat insert will fit, a Helicoil will easily fit and they don't come out when fitted properly. (often on motorcycle engines there isn't room for an insert that large a diameter, a 10mm thread plug can sometimes be changed to a 12mm thread plug or Helicoiled)
Do you change heat range of spark plugs to compensate for the much poorer heat transference when JB Weld and/or Loctite is used? (I have a lot of experience with air cooled motorcycle and VW engines which have higher cylinder head temperatures and it can be an issue)
The Cal-Van seems to have a MUCH bigger recess under the flange compared to a Timesert the air-gap or JB Weld won't help
Whoever 'invented' Cal-Van, didn't really do anything new but obviously saw a lot of inserts being fitted badly so came up with a a guide as part of the kit, it was a standard procedure in many industries when doing machining to use drill guide inserts (in the days before CNC when I trained)
What recess under the flange are you talking about?
@@kyletrump8025 Probably recess for thread to 'run out', after 6 months I can't completely remember. I'll have to watch video again
@@kyletrump8025 Stop video at 8 minutes 53 seconds and take a look at the insert.
There is a huge area not in contact with cylinder head so it cannot transfer heat properly from spark plug.
'Timeserts' (from Wurth in Germany) actually have different finishes 'black' for cast iron heads and a coppery finish for aluminium heads
(I don't think it's copper as that will have galvanic corrosion, even if it's lower than stainless steel in aluminium)
Cal Van is a company that makes oddball tools kinda like Lisle only a much smaller company. They have been in business at least 50 years. Usually tools that art on the cheap side but sometimes the only company that has an unusual tool for oddball applicators.
Seriously, Ford should have recalled every one of those trucks!
Bought the kit from Wise Tool as recommended. Repaired three blown plugs in my son's Mercury. Kit works great. Car now runs great. Ron: your instructions and suggestions are top notch and helped us do the job right. Thank you.
I'm glad it helped. If you feel so inclined please use the donation link. It helps
@@SandCarServices You still in business? I'm in Menifee and I had one of these blow out. Guess which cylinder. Yup. Number 3.
I had my 350 for sale until I researched this. I couldn't figure out why it still idled so well if there may be major damage. So, using these tools and techniques we got it done cheap and its purring like a little kitty cat again. The only problem I ran into was the cylinder was very wet from fuel/oil residue as a result of the length it was driven without a plug but still getting fuel that was not combusted. This created a problem with expelling the shavings. But shes got 250K miles and that little bit wont end her.
I have (3) 5.4 engines to service in my fleet. So, I would imagine I will see this again.
Thanks again!
I sent this to my friend Joe,he's been having a problem with his f150 ,he ordered the kit
Thank you so much
Great job going over these thread inserts and showing all the issues.

Hi.this is the first one of your videos that I have seen and I think I have picked a great one. Well done .Cheers from Tassie Australia..
Thanks for your time & knowledge, I'm repairing a 4.6 in a 2004 Crown Vic, cheap repair was done lasted about 7 months, now I have the Cal-Van kit
Awesome man! I'm glad I saw this before I went to NAPA. My truck blew the spark plug out of the same hole as the one you showed here. Thank you so much!
Thanks for your experience and I value an intelligent technician. I am where I am today because I go the extra mile to make sure any repairs I make are done right the first time.
Thanks for posting this video. I’m going to have to do this to my Ford E250 van. Tight space to work in. I bought the cheap inserts but I think I will order the Cal-van kit. Thanks for the video.
i just wonted to say a big thank you for this video you made,, my very old Johnson 140,hp outboard boat engine decided to "spit out a spark plug",, and it had only just been serviced as well?, my guess is who ever serviced it over tightened my plug's!,, anyhow it popped a plug out stripping out the thread,, i asked some boat engineers if it could be fixed but most so called outboard engineers told me to use the engine as an anchor!,, or change the cylinder head! and that was far to pricy for an old fart like me,, but after watching your video, i got me a spark plug thread kit and did the job myself,, however, i am no engineer, but even i found it easy to fix my outboard engine,, lets hope it stay's fixed!,, but for all them who never say,, thank you,, i will say it,, thank you, thank you, thank you, and thank you,,,
Man This Video is Better Than A Auto Mechanic Class, Keep Up The Good Work!!!!
Dude ,45 years general mechanic. Just installed the autozone part unsuccessfully and was pretty sure i was pulling the motor on my expedition. Googled problem and are 1st video . You saved this truck . ! Thank You
Thank you so much for such a detail information. I have a 2010 F150 that it has been a nightmare to me, watching your video, made me confident enough to work on it and get it done, very much appreciate it.
I’m definitely replacing that auto parts set with calvan on my excursion ASAP thank you 👍
I used the cal van kit on my 2004 ford explorer v8 may 2023. It works perfectly to date. This video made me get it. Got to stop by and give my thanks.
I own a 99 F-350, V10 that I bought, new, back in 98. 128,000 miles later, I’ve had all plugs blown out and I’ve used the heliCoil on them. Going to purchase the Cal-Van kit. Thanks
Watched this video and bought this kit. Worked wonderful. Thanks
My spark plug just did this to my f150. Thanks for the info.
am planning on buying a 1999 v-10 & this was one of my main concerns. Thank you very much for calming some of my concerns. I may just go ahead purchase this ford pickup.
Thanks Boss!
I have a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis with 4.6 engine. Spark plug hasn't blown out on me (yet). But I sure learned exactly how to fix it, if it does.
Thanks for all your teachings !!!
you are the Man
I trust the common advice that claims to absolutely eliminate chance of blowout by tightening this style plug to 22 - 25 ft/lbs (28 max) ignoring specification which is only 13 ft/lbs.
I have a 4.6L I’ve had two blown and had to be replaced. Thanks for the video I’m buying this kit for the other 6.
I have 3” body lift kit on ‘99 5.4 - gives extra room to get to #4 & 8..... going out NOW to check
plugs. Thanks for all this info. New subscriber
Just ordered a calvan kit for my 2valve 97 cylinder 4 wish me luck Ron. Thank you so much
Hows it been running???
@@mercedesbenzs600bash been running good! Been about 8,000 miles since I put the insert in and you’d never know! The install was easy if you get the right tools like the borescope and the calvan insert kit on Amazon. It was like 250 but it’s way cheaper then replacing the headers, and there is no difference. I stand by it.
@@zackmarshall8268 Really good to hear, much appreciated...
This guy is the Shit very straight forward . My mustang 2002 gt was stuck in my garage thoughtid have to get a new head even thought maybe another engine because of a blown spark plug. He saved my ass. Can't thank him enough. Had my car done within 2 hrs. I was driving my pony again. Fuck Yeah !!!! And Thank You again..
Replaced 3 failed spark plugs now on a Triton V10 with the Cal Van inserts. First one in 2008 before all the informational video's. The head was previously repaired with a helicoil style repair from the previous owner or car dealership where purchased. The helicoil blew out 1 week after purchasing and the dealer said oh well, but they did offer to fix it with a new head and install at $2500.00. Since then I have discovered that prior to blowing the spark plug you can hear a ticking like an exhaust leak before the spark pug fails. I was wondering why people are not informed of this? A loose spark plug does not send a check engine light. Unfortunately I was on a road trip when the 3rd one went. Great video for us home mechanics. None of the Cal Van inserts have failed. I just started hearing the infamous ticking. Time to fix another one or tighten a spark plug. Thanks for the video's.
Mainly because not all make the ticking noise before they blow out. I know it seems like it should.
TheStringRider if I ever hear that ticking noise again in my car, I’m going to check the plugs
@@psyker4321 I complained of the ticking to different mechanics and they just shrugged their shoulders at me. Blew out #7 last week and had it fixed. Guess what, no more ticking sound in the engine compartment.
The more of these videos I watch about the Triton engine the more I wished I would have bought something else. Just wanted to add that.
Why,there really that bad???
*You and me both!!!* Although, I have to say, I've put 150,000+ miles on it without a hiccup... until now. My fuel pump stopped working!! And thanks to Ford's infinite wisdom, I have to drop the tank just to get at the pump, *which is inside!!!* It's gonna be a pain in the rump!!
@@iamnotpaulavery I don't know of any manufacturer that doesn't have an "in-tank" fuel pump in the last 20 years. Basically anything with EFI will have a pump that requires the tank to be dropped to replace. There are some exceptions I'm sure, but the vast majority of vehicles on the road today will have that.
The triton motor was one of the most reliable motors produced. Easily 200k plus miles from a engine. Most issues arise from people either over torqued or under torqued the plugs. You literally put 250 bucks in a insert kit and will get a Permanent fix. Other brands and models have issues too, just don't hear about it. Check the comments above
@@mercedesbenzs600bash the 3v are that bad
I just bought a kit , awesome video. Thanks
I have to do one next week ... I will take your advice on what you are telling me ... Thanks for the information ... Ordering the Calvin kit tomorrow ...
thanks for the encouraging words.
Thanks Ron!
I shot you a donation and encourage others to recognize the value of your advice.
I am in need of immediate repair and was hopeful you might be avail for a plug repair. Ah,,, you returned my call . We will see ya saturday!
EXCELLENT VIDEO RON! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!
I've been using TIME-SERTS for over 40 years and never have had any problems with their products. The Triton kit I purchased has been a really good kit for not only the Triton, but Toyotas, when other --in a hurry-- mechanics try to zip the plugs in with an air ratchet and get them crooked. The only thing you mentioned about the CAL-VAN kit i would be apprehensive about is the insert being able to come back out when removing the spark plug. Time-Serts (as you probably know) lock themselves into the head upon install. If they come out, you've got other problems a lot worse than a blown spark plug. Other than that, the CAL-VAN inserts look pretty beef.
You should call the guy with the limo bus I just responded to. I guess I'll tell him his insert isn't broken
I use the time serts too I seem to have good service, I installed one on my 04 lightning about 40k miles back and no problems year, and I push it a bit, I do take my good ole time when I do this kind of job, you need to be careful👍🏻
Use red locktite and that won't happen.
The timeserts are the best out there. They are used a lot in high boost modular race engines.
From looking at the video the Cal Trans version of that has deeper threads which means at least in my honest observation it's going to bite harder into the adjacent metal vs sav-a-thread and I agree with you it's going to do it do it right the first time and my other favorite phrase if you don't know what in the world you're doing don't do it because it will cost you more when a mechanic has to go back in and attempt to fix your mess ups I'm not saying yours because you are the mechanic
I love your videos. You do an awesome job, explaining everything that you've done or are about to do. Thanks.
🙏 thank you all the way from Yorkshire England. Great advice
I was confused at first because you said 2001 F150 Triton but I saw the 3-valve plug. After re-watching, I do realize that this is indeed a 2-valve Triton and the customer used a 3-valve plug with that self-threading adapter. I knew that some of the 2-valve 5.4's had issues with the plugs blowing out but I didn't realize it was such a common issue. I always figured the 3-valve 5.4's were more problematic with the plugs breaking off. Anyway, great video. Thanks for the good explanation.
Excellent video! Helped me greatly👍
thank you so much and i am going take the time to thank you for all them people that cant say thanks
Very well done video. Thank you!
I ALWAYS LEARN FROM YOUR VIDEO'S KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK... I AM A MOBILE MECHANIC AND I 2 CAN'T LEARN ENOUGH .TKS ...

You are working very nice and carefully thanks for you sr this video
Good advice, I went ahead and did all 8 on my 97' F150, 5.4 Triton. It went great thanks!
Could you reach all the ports? Or did you have to pull the motor? Thanks.
Thank you for this Video, I feel I have learnt something here to day as I've always wonted to know how to do that, thank you.
Thank you for this informative video!
Just used a Calvan kit that I bought from Wise Auto tools for my 2008 Crown Vic and it's running great.
Very good video, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Rocky
Holy crap get this...
A little over a month ago, I was driving along and then POP POP POP PFF PFF POP PFFF... lol

Thank you very much...very informative
Thank you for this great video. You are amazing sir.
Thank you for this video, have had helicoils come loose in the past (aluminium head - "professionally" installed) and this is a much superior repair.
Just bought a 99 f150 from a customer that blew a plug and dosent wann deal with it anymore, just bought the cal-van kit to repair the hole today!!
This video gives me hope 😂 I’m going to have to give it a shot ! Thank you
thank you sir. extremely helpful
I used these on my 5.4 triton and was about a 20 minute job. Simple and fool proof. I can’t see how you could mess it up. Changed all my plugs and put new coil packs (off eBay set of 8 for $30). They work better than than I could ever expected. Engine runs better than it ever has. Only use these inserts and tools. You won’t regret it.
My followers please remember you get what you pay for! If anyone thinks that getting all 8 coils for the price of one is a good idea then good luck to you. I spend way to much time changing the cheap coils when they misfire. It's your choice.
@@SandCarServices You are so right about that..Ford coils are the only ones I will use..
Fantastic informative video, thanks señor 👍
Great video , God bless you sir! Saved three engines from your advice!
I just bought the oreilies cheapo helicoils. They are the self tapper variety. I'm sooooo glad I saw this video before putting it in. You've saved me. Ty

As they say, "you get what you pay for" , great show- replacing my plug tomorrow, got my kit today.
Great video. Thank you!
This is the most comprehensive instruction on this type of repair. I have a 1999 6.8 with 125k. Never a blown plug, thank God! I appreciate your knowledge!!!
I sold Cal-Van tools in the 80’s and 90’s. Don’t remember anything like this. Most of their products were bubble wrapped on a cardboard back. Most of their products were good quality but I always thought Lisle tools were better back in that era. Interesting to know that they are still going strong.
Thanks for the info very helpful
Great video, well done
Yea imbue the kit next month ive seen the video an thats the best one I've seen to use cost more but worth it
Awsome stuff Ron. I discovered your vids a little over a year ago. I own a 2001 Ford Excursion Limited with Triton V10, 6.8L gas engine. It has 250k plus miles on it and runs great! This vehicle is very special to me so im slowly doing wut i can to restore and maintain it. You seem to be more knowledgeable on the Tritons than any other mechanic i've listened to. Hopefully, i can get my vehicle to yor shop one day to get a number of things done to it. Bcuz i kno that if i take it to you, it will be done RIGHT! Keep the vids flowing👍
good job! thanks for the vid

Wish you where in VA I'm thinking about buying an excursion V10 and have been doing research so there is that and the manifold bolts that worry me I'll just have to be extra careful to who I do the work out too. Thank you so much for this segment it speaks on everything in great detail🥳🥳🥳🍿🍿🍿
I have a machine shop and build my own equipment I do aircraft and oilfield work primarily and have built every machine I have ever put inti service. The factory has tolerances, I get rid of that all that I can. In the past, around automotive machine shops, well, they're just hard to take seriously from the industrial world of machining. On the rare occasion I bump into someone with an eye for detail, in the automotive world, I appreciate that so much because I am not a mechanic and I need you guys. You might imagine how hard it is, for anyone, not just me, to find a mechanic with an eye for detail. in any business there are only a few, maybe two doing professional good business. You are an outstanding one and its awesome to see. I have a humvee im trying to build I wish I could have you do the engine you would be the only one I would trust. good info. here thanks for that. let me know if I can send you an engine or buy one from you. maybe a duramax or whatever you suggest
Noticed several comments concerning using vacuum vs. air hose... Anyway, vacuuming can remove a lot of the debris, BUT the vacuum wand MUST be in close proximity to each chip to capture it... And any oil residue on the cylinder wall exacerbates the problem! Try holding a vacuum nozzle 4-5 inches from a few metal chips...likely few if any will be collected. Do the same with an air hose nozzle and the positive pressure will send them flying...even at pretty low air pressure. In essence... Vacuum is probably ok for chips that end up on the piston face, but you really can't expect to get good results trapping oily chips or those adhering to the cylinder wall higher up! You stand a much better chance dislodging chips with pressurized air... enabling them to be expelled from the sparkplug hole along with the forcefully expelled air.
Hey I’m glad I ran across your video
Thank You For your info on the cal van 38900 i bought mine off of wise auto tools
I had one of the save a thread inserts in, but it kept failing (I have been suffering with this issue on and off for several years since it first blew out-) and this last time I bought the CalVan kit to fix it well... Anyway, I was trying to decide how to get the save a thread insert out- What I found to work was simple! I used a long, narrow scraper with a handle and hammer strike area on the end which was about the same with as the threads on the spark plug... I hammered it into the save a thread insert, and simply backed it out... I was happily surprised it worked so well, as I had been contemplating the options, and none looked good... Then I was very happy to see the CalVan insert is a lot thicker than the save a thread one, so that the threading for the save a thread will be removed by the reamer, and still plenty of meat for the tap to cut into...
U the man on the 5.4 Triton saved me some Doe thanjs
