When this came out in 89/90 it ruled the world. She held her own and didn’t need her brother. The younger generation doesn’t seem to know about her because they start and stop with her brother. Her catalog runs parallel to his and she deserves much more respect.

This dance is Iconic!!! The choreography is so hard to do. Her voice, her moves and her messages always command. Love her!
When this came out, this album inspired two sisters to go back to school instead of staying high school dropouts. They presented Janet with a humanitarian of the year award. It was a very touching moment. I think it's even on UA-cam too.

Awww Jay... I loved the smile. You just couldn't stop grinning. Janet is the baby of the family. Before she started singing she was on television as Penny on the show Good Times. She was also in the TV series Fame about the performing arts high school and also on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air as a love interest for Will...

Good Times is my show! Janet is a little older than me, so I really admired her character. Sad backstory, though. "Penny" was the "Oliver" (from Brady Bunch) on that show - that young kid brought in to reinvigorate a older, good show with an aging cast. Really cute and funny, though.

Had the pleasure of seeing this concert. Was standing about 20 feet from her. She was so beautiful, with her shiny blue/black hair, various costumes, and of course incredible dance routines. For her entrance, she came up in a glass elevator from the front middle of the crowd and rose above us. Such a professional production. Her roadies/setup crew were staying at the hotel I was working at as a bartender. They were telling me how the stages, bridges, and equipment for this concert took 18 transport trucks to haul.
I had great seats too but i was so excited because i got within touching distance of jimmy jam

@@elizabeththomas6571 that was intentional & publicized. She talks about her admiration for MJ. She even said that Destiny's Child auditioned for their record deal by singing "where you are". I like that she gives him his credit. The same way MJ gave James Brown his due.
I love the relationship she and Michael had. He was going to use the costume concepts and choreography in this for one of his videos and she asked if she could "steal" them. And as you see... He said yes. Their collabs made them both so great

Everytime that I see Jay or another 'Video Reactor' on UA-cam* react to seeing a famous Music Artist for the first time, all that I can think about is 'This is the result of what happens when MTV*, VH1* and other Music Video Channels on T.V. are not playing Music Videos every Hour of the Day! They also foolishly assumed that since We now have the Internet, that Everyone was watching Music Videos like We used to. They were proven wrong on that assumption! (Here's where I Rant on something that's been going on for a while: The disappearance of Music Video T.V. Networks in the U.S. kind of resembles what happens when Schools have to cut Their Funding for certain Courses, and the first Courses that They always consider to put on the 'Chopping Block' to take away from Students are the Music and Art Courses, but strangely Sports aways winds up receiving Eternal Funding from both the Government and Corporate Sponsers. It should never have to come down to this! Hey, Corporations and Government, join together and stop removing Funding from other School Courses just because it does not fall into the category of making You a Profit, or in other words, They cannot make an quick Profit off of those going into Music and the Arts, unlike those going into Sports). There needs to be a Equal Balance of Courses that Students, especially in the U.S., should be taking to receive a True, Well-Rounded Education!

I had a roommate for a while in school, a trained dancer, who would never stop raving about the choreography in this video. You know how the dancers in chorus lines and ballet troupes all kind of look alike? It's deliberate, because apparently it's incredibly hard to get choreography to look tight for dancers with different body types (different heights, builds, musculature, male/female, etc.). To quote said roommate, _ad nauseum_ , the choreography in this video alone is a work of art. The song's pretty good too. :-D
Music-wise, you can’t go wrong with anything in her discography. Choreography-wise, I recommend Nasty / Miss You Much / Escapade / If / Alright.

During this part of Janet's career, I was in elementary school and I wanted to dress like her, all in black. I even had a black blazer. She looked SO cool.

Janet has such an extensive catalogue of great music to choose from. Even though Michael was technically a bigger star, for me Janet has been more consistent musically throughout her career. She's never released a bad album.

There was actually an urban myth that she and Michael WERE the same person (yes people actually believed that lol). On an awards show, Janet presented Michael with a lifetime legend award of some kind and he made a joke out it and made her come back and stand next to him and said something like "We can finally put one crazy rumor to rest" She was the only other Jackson that made it out of Michael's shadow and they were very close because of it. She never wanted anything from him. If you haven't seen their duet "Scream," you should! At that point it was the most expensive video ever made.

When I was 10 and this album was HUGE, she seemed larger than life. She brought such an important message to this album as well! If you want to see a bad ass chair dance, check out “Miss You Much”!
I remember driving to "Sam Goody" and buying this CD and picking up my buddy from work, and listening to this album in it's entirety in my car with him, and both of us being soooo blown away by how great this album was. "Rhythm Nation," "Black Cat," "Miss You Much," "Escapade," "Come Back to Me," "State of the World." I also must add, that this was a concept album. The interludes before each song helped tell the story and concept she was trying to convey. At one point, you should really experience it as a whole from the beginning, without videos. The music itself, will provide the images to your mind. As far as her slower songs, "Let's Wait Awhile," from her "Control" album is her best, in my opinion.

Everyone one the Planet knows Janet ! She started her career at age 7 in Las Vegas with her brothers and sisters. She is one of only 2 other artists to have a # 1 album in each of the last 4 decades. Barbara Streisand and Bruce Springsteen are the other 2

I still remember when this album came out....it had so many big hits. She showed she was top-notch. I so enjoyed going to her shows, and once even was 2nd row right in the center, so I saw most of her performance just from a few yards away. Looking in her eyes....no surprise I had a big crush on her! :-)

And Justin’s career took off. Justin said year’s later that it shows how we treat women of color here. He was 50% responsible and took 0% of the blame and he should have spoken out rather than listening to his PR firm. But he was young and took their advice.

@@richerDiLefto yea it was bad judgement really. But we shouldn’t be such prudes. I think the malfunction was she was supposed to have a nipple pasty and it fell off? Or you couldn’t see that it was there? But people complain over the Super Bowl content not being family friendly every single year. It should not have been a career ending mistake. That’s why I’m glad they’re looking into Nickelodeon airing it next year. The playoff game they did was a huge hit so they think they’re moving forward with Super Bowl next year.

I saw her at the Forum in Los Angeles in the early 90's doing the Rhythm Nation Tour. Dead center seats 6 rows from the stage. What an experience. She really put on a show. I gotta admit Black Cat was my favorite song in the show and still is one of my favorites.

She was always in the shadow of Michael as nobody can come close to MJ, he was just in rare air, but she was massive in her own right in the 90s and had her own legion of fans worldwide. People dont realise she sold over 100 million records and who can forget hits like 'Thats the way Love goes' and her dancing and choreography was always bringing something new. She was big though.

Just imagine how much work went into this 5 minute music video: months of choreography and rehearsal plus possibly weeks of shooting not to mention she has to perform this dance in every concert, she absolutely earned every dollar in her pocket. I have nothing but the utmost respect for her.
