Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Silicon Valley) joins us again on the podcast after several years to reflect on his career taking off with The Big Sick, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Welcome to Chippendales - along with the untenable anxiety that came with it. Kumail is really open about how he has misguided priorities after The Big Sick and why he was used to associating work with stress. We also talk about his friendship with Dave Bautista, disappointment with Eternals, and getting back into standup.

Proof That DAVE BAUTISTA is One of the Best in This Business #insideofyou #kumailnanjiani
Bautista is actually a better actor than the Rock
Better actor by miles!!!
1000000%
The Rock has only played one role in all of his films: The Rock. He should take some cues from Bautista and Cena - Acting requires actual range.
Cena is a better actor than the rock. Watch Peacemaker if you don’t believe me.
@@jerryw2460 Yeah. I think he took the Rock's jab bout Cena doing the Marine film personally. But Bautista smokes them both in terms of ability.
My Dave Bautista story is before he was acting and he was wrestling. I saw him get out of a Range Rover in Montreal and there was no mistaking Bautista for anyone else. He was HUGE with tattoos. I was sitting at an outdoor cafe that was side by side with bars, restaurants etc and all of them were separated by the same 4ft wicket type fence. He goes with his friend to sit on the restaurant outdoor patio deck, I'm sitting at the cafe next over. He order food and a young, maybe 18 old girl walks out of a group of 8 or 10 similar age near-by people and says to Bautista in broken English (she is french) "Hey Mister, can I have what you don't finish on your plate?" Bautista gets up goes over and talks to the girl and says: "You are hungry? Are your friends hungry too?" He orders each of them a chicken meal special to go, the waiter is telling him not to, to never mind them, Bautista gets slightly annoyed with the waiter and says "I got this." I guess they were hungry poor street kids. $150 or so for their dinners wasn't much for Bautista then (or now) but most people in his situation would have turned a blind eye. Dave ate, the kids thanked him, he gave a thumbs up and left with his friend in the Range Rover. I honestly don't think the girl knew who Bautista was because she kept calling him "Mister" and she was a lot more interested in the food than him while she was being grateful. Heck of a thing.
Bautista in Bladerunner 2047 was goddamn perfect. "You've never seen a miracle."
The short 'Nowhere to run' prequel to Bladerunner, his performance is fantastic. You can find it on UA-cam if you haven't seen it.
Seriously. I mean the whole movie is very very good, but it gets off to a bang almost entirely because of him. He's not just the latest iteration of the "gentle giant" character, he's a phenomenal actor
This was going to be my comment. Bladerunner 2047 is really good, and Bautista is the biggest reason why.
He had criminally short screen time. Watch the companion short film where he plays the same character, he's phenomenal.
Even though it was a very small part, that was the role where I was like, "oh this guy can do so much more than just be the strong guy type." Obviously, there was still a fight involved, but I could tell he's got more range than I expected. He could 100% star in a drama that doesn't involve any fighting.
Stuber was hilarious! That was the first time I genuinely and constantly laughed out loud in a theater in a while.
Definitely enjoyed Kumail in Obi-Wan… it helped elevate season 1.
Right??? Maybe because I LOVE Dave but I loved that film
bautista is soooo good. any project he is in has been well worth watching
I've been a fan of Dave Bautista since the mid decade of the 2000's and still am following his career, Smallville was his first ever acting role in Season 6 the episode called Static. He came all the way from being the longest reigning World Heavyweight Champion to a successful actor, so proud of him
I love seeing wrestlers in TV shows, always surprised. Watched NCIS LA one week and Shane McMahon was on, then Goldberg the following week. Remember seeing Cena in Psych as well.
Bautista is amazing in blade runner. Tiny role but he maximized his presence on screen.
I have no doubt that is why Villeneuve used him again in the Dune movies.
@@stevenberliner7964 Huge fan of the book series. Read Dune in high school and it blew my mind. Bautista is a perfect Harkonnen.
I kinda wished they spent more time on him as I found his character more compelling than goslings or fords
Dave in Blade Runner was such a short role but so impressive that it convinved me that the guy could actually be at the top of acting with Leo and others it's phenomenal.
Kumail Nanjiani, I would enjoy watching him in more dramatic roles.
me too. just hope it isnt marvel lol
The Big Sick was good
I think Kumail was at WrestleMania 35 near the announce table with a Stuber sign and talked with Dave before his retirement match with Triple H. That's awesome.
Kumail and Dave are Genius! Especially at the end. Frickin Hysterical
Not sure if it's the same level mass and muscle since Eternals, but you still gotta give this guy props for keeping up with his physique since then!
I wanna second Kumail here, Dave Bautista's did great in his small role in Bladerunner. One of those small roles that has a big impact.
Have to agree with Kumail...David Lynch's Dune was 'nuts' but still a hell of a watch. :)
I love it for the costume design.
Lynch's "Dune" made me want to go read the book. I probably wouldn't have if not for him and his team.
Agree.
I still cant get away from Kumail being Director Tann in ME:Å - so each time I hear him its instant flashback to that.
Even though I've seen him in other movies and also animated as voice actor its just instant flashback to it.
He came by the Hertz parking lot where i worked and was super cool with the staff, took photos with my colleagues. Unfortunately i wasn't working that day 😢
I want Stuber 2!!!!
The thing about wrestlers, they *are* actors. Truly, they have to inhabit a character and have to hone their improv skills. Some are even legit comedians. Wrestling is a weird sport in that way. It requires multiple talents to be noticed as a 'good' wrestler. Cena is another multi-talented man and his main ability is being a funny fucker. He's so quick and spontaneous it's ridiculous.
At least watch Bautista's scene in Blade Runner 2049, Michael. It's not long. If you don't want to continue the movie, fine, but if you actually like the guy you owe it to yourself to see how much he's grown as an actor.
Stuber was unexpectedly hilarious. The whole premise of his eyes being screwed up was unexpected and made for incredible physical comedy.
TBF Lynch didn't made up the concept of the guild navigators (that's what that creature was) but he certainly adapted in a very interesting way.
The brain fish is a guild navigator, they do exist in the novels but you are not supposed to see them. David Lynch didn't make it up it's just something that wasn't supposed to be seen.
I liked stuber
Stuber was great! I'd love to see you two in an action comedy again.
I was at sxsw for stuber . Loved it
I’m not a blade runner fan. Watch blade runner 2. It’s really cool.
News flash - The 'Navigators' were in the Dune books and the David Lynch movie and limited HBO series and now the new Dune movies. They're a critical element to the whole spice economy and political intrigue of the Dune universe. Read the book Kumail - you can thank me later.
You're right!!, I was going to say it... What does he means with "Is not in the book?" It is!.
The original Dune movie from David Lynch is the full book, Villeneuve's is just half the book, you will most likely see the navigators in Dune part 2.
Except the books described them as being more merman like, humanoid shaped but with fins for hands and feet. Lynch's Dune turned them into more large, floating slug creatures.
The scenes in which they appear in the Lynch Dune are made up though.
Ahhh Dave is where the introduction to gear came from...
Stuber is a very underrated comedy I would recommend to a lot of people
I'm the type of guy who pauses a video, comments in disapproval, and close it out when someone who doesn't appreciate Bladerunner talks about bladerunner
Hotel Artemis is one of my favorite movies.
What I like about this is that I'm on the "I love boring movies" side of the spectrum with Kumail, but I appreciate, like they do, that its fine not to be that kind of nerd, too.
I need to watch this show more. It is weird to see Michael Rosenbaum being so serious - not that he doesn't play serious roles, but I have seen him do satire/comedy before and I swear it was some of the most hilariously deadpan absurdist genius I have ever seen
Oh nevermind I got to the part of the clip where he says he doesn't like Blade Runner or Dune. Freaaak
Him saying hi like that is a wrestling thing. It’s about respect and didn’t want to have you think he didn’t respect you.
If you're a successful actor I guess you're making two or possibly 3 moves a year, depending on the size of role, therefor in your 'busy' years you may get make 20-30 films if you're lucky. So picking a winner every time is probably impossible, as you're under pressure from studios and agents to appear in projects that maybe don't excite you personally. In that case, say 50% of the films you make are your choice, you just have to make those 10-12 movies count, as they are the ones that people will remember you for. No one went into making The Eternals thinking 'lets make a bad, boring and confusing movie' but that's what they got and I think Kumail seems to have a good takeaway that even a bad movie can lead to a good personal experience. Eternals is still crap though.
Stuber was a good movie.
If you haven’t seen Stuber, I highly recommend it. I laughed so hard!
This guy now has a permanent giga chad jaw
Dave should’ve made movies much earlier in his career
Such a well rounded actor
The navigators are in the books.
I liked Stuber 😂😂😂😂
Stuber deserves a sequel ❤
Ya and Dave had an MMA fight and shocking development he won 🥸 imagine if that was his career instead of acting , that would be sad.
The Stargazer Lounge
The HGH man cometh.
I'll never forgive Dave for betraying Ray Mysterio.
Michael, can you please please please have the Undertaker Mark Calloway on your show or the controversial David Schultz. The wrestler who slapped John Stossel twice on 20/20 then became a bounty hunter because of what happened?
❤❤❤ I absolutely adore Stuber ❤❤❤
Stuber was great
He should play in James Gunns DC movies, or at least be in a Else world with him.
Why is the third guy there
Someone needs to finish the sponsored chips and drinks😀
Stuber didn't do well?
Baustista IS better actor than the rock
Its funny you mentioned the Big Fish looking Space Guild thing in Dune, I was literally thinking about that the other day. I feel like they dropped the ball by not doing something similar in the Dune TV-show and the New Dune movie.
The big fish thing is a guild navigator in the books and they ate pretty important as they control all galactic travel
They did show a Guild Navigator in the Mini Series but they made them look like they were actually described in the book, a merman type creature not a giant slug like Lynch did.
@@mrquirky3626
I know what you mean but I feel lynch was done dirty by the exec's
Lordy - in 5 minutes I heard Bladerunner was boring enough to not watch the sequel, the First Dune was "Meh" and the Navigators referred to as "Brain fish"....Yikes.
The original Dune is way better than the new one.
❤
He is a prime example of Hollywood sucking the life force out of human’s. He use to be funny, I still remember one of his bits from years ago.
Good to see he's not a political commentator anymore😂😂😂
Huh ? Dave or Michael ?
@@ChaosKingable definitely Dave.
What political commentary did he make ?
What do you mean?
@PrisonMike117 I mean the monologs like so many of those clowns made before Biden took office...now they're quiet as a church mouse. With all the stupid shit going down they got NOTHING to say that's what I mean.
This dude is roided to the gills lmfao bro these celebs just need to be honest and say they take PEDs
😂😂 oh man.... just when i thought i could not like Michael anymore....i always felt the same about the original Blade Runner and Dune...nice to look at but boring as hell.
Always interrupting his guests just so he can tell his own stories, what a complete narcissist!
Kumail always striked me as someone who desperately wants to be famous. It's hard to put my finger on but there is something off about the dude, like a palpable emptiness.
He is famous, is he a superstar..no he's not, but he has a level of fame.
Dave said it best...he wants to be an actor and not a movie star. The Rock is a movie star and Dave is an actor for example. No disrespect to movie stars
