Honourable Sir,
Another fascinating review backed by the immaculate skill of your expertise.
The fresco on the barrel of this masterpiece is the painting brushed by Gu Kaizhi (345AD-406A) where we see poet Qu Yuan (339BC-278BC) is reading to his community of friends before asking for a final farewell from them in his journey to eternity.
Qu Yuan was a statesman and poet during the Warring State period. He was attributed to the first seven poems of the 'Chu Ci'(Songs of Chu). He was a foreign service officer of esteem in the court of Emperor Huai but came under the disdainful royal frowning for composing the poem titled 'Li Sao'(Encountering Sorrow) which criticized the court for it's refusal to listen to his advice. He was banished and later saught his refuge under the shady haunt of death by throwing himself in to the lap of river Huang He. Probably the Chinese characters inscripted on the barrel are the excerpts of few lines of the poetry once composed by Yuan.
Let our hearts not forget him and his unalloyed loyalty to truth.
Thanks again for your contribution. Very much appreciated.
That was fascinating my friend. Now I must buy the pen.
It's barrel looks like an ink painting ❤.
I'm a fan of Hongdian's extra-fine nibs in all their metal pens I own (about 10). After getting used to spending less than $20 on some pretty decent pens, though, I'm not sure one of these is going to wind up on my wish list.
Here's the video I've been waiting for, mine 231 is on the way. Good to see before it reaches my hand. Thanks for your sharings 👍
Thank you for your honest appraisal of the pen. Metal sections can be slippery but if it is made correctly, there should be no problem with it.
I would certainly consider the pen. I like EF nibs and usually use them whenever possible. Being left handed has caused this to happen, I believe. I am glad there is better performance of the is size nib form the past.
The design of the "painting" on the body is classic for the Chinese. Very traditional and I haven't seen an example on a pen in a long while.
As always, a great review.
Hongdian make nice pens, no doubt. I am not certain that I would be comfortable posting the cap, for fear of wearing out the enamel painting. For that matter, I might wonder if it would wear off with repeated pocket carry. But, at the price! Nice review as always, Chris. Carry on in good health!
I like Hongdian pens and this is no exception. Good looking pen with my favorite EF nib. Put it on my wish list.
Great review and excellent ink choice. Thank you, Chris.
Thanks for watching!
A bit small. They make beautiful caps & barrels. The N1S has the best orange I've seen.
Such a beautiful pen for only 28 bucks thats a bargain - the metal grip section :)
Hi Friend, will there be a video on the fountain pen AIHAO MOUSE, blue color?
No.
Thank you for the review.... Isn't Hongdian 231 essentially the same pen as Hongdian 1837 ???
Somewhat similar. The design on barrel is different also clip, no metal cap finial, section. But to a quick look, seem more similar than different.
Most people seem to like Hongdian pens with EF nibs. How about their F nibs?
Both are smooth, wet & generous writers.
I'm interested to see if anyone can translate the writing.
YES. He wrote “MICE writer”.
