    Engaging overview. Thank you! The Hongdian people are imaginative, and produce a consistently good pen.

    Hi Chris! Thanks for the booklet, very important for such a significant fountain pen. I also added the Hong Dian D5 to my collection and at the moment it looks excellent. The Hong Dian production is truly remarkable, both in style and performance. Majohn is responding with the T6...

      I have not ordered a T6, not that interested. Unique metal overlay on some is all that it has different. But the D5, that is interesting.

    Nice coincidence, when I received my 8041 I used Brilliant Mint from Teranishi, which looks very similar to your Turquoise, that's a very nice fit for that pen.
    As for the pronunciation, the Q in chinese sounds like a CH, for a recent example you may watch the movie Meg 2, the name of the meg that they have captive is chinese and has a Q in it.

    We are so different (country boy v. City; engineering-challenged law/finance v. Production/engineer-minded, etc.); however, when it comes to fountain pens, we think so much alike. If you go back to the literature regarding the training in schools (including colleges, where “penmanship” (with fountain pens, of course) was taught to college students, especially in so-called “normal” schools, which were chartered to teach young students (sometimes right out of the 8th grade and from a one-room country school), they, they, of course, were taught the absolutely correct way to write! I still cannot match those flairs and loops the way my dad wrote, which he rarely did, so we would encourage him just to show us how he learned t write with such style. (He had an 8th grade, one-room country school education (+ part of a year at Southern Illinois “Normal,” forced to leave after a term when his father’s serious health forced him to return home at age nearing 15 but the oldest male child, because he would have to run the family farm. My I point in all this verbose background is that he, like all those students, was taught to take the cap off and hold it in his off-hand (left for him). I still write that way most of the time. BUT I NEVER POST ANYTHING EXCEPT MY BARSS POCKET PEN! Why on earth should I ever post a Montblanc, a Pilot 845 Urushi, or any of my Jinhao 100 Centennials (etc.)? Virtually every one of my fountain pens I have purchased new still look new! There are no cap marks! I will not even post the pens that have some kind of cushion in the cap. I have never broken any of the acrylic sometimes extending beyond the cap band, something I have seen in posted-pens. I acknowledge that some may fear knocking a cap off the desk and breaking it when it collides with furniture and/or floor; however, (so far) I have not done that. My office at work has hard floors (and the kitchen area at home does), but I have been lucky so far. Point: whether at home or work or just old & clumsy, I do not think posting does all that much to protect the cap. :)

    Thanks for the link to the Qin Dynasty pamphlet. Mine is finally on the way and should arrive in Canada tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to this one. I'm just a bit disappointed that it is only available in EF and F. I'm going to try it but I'm pretty sure that I will get tired of it quickly. Do any of your nib units fit it? Douglas did a video about Hongdian nibs a year or so ago and they're not universal.

    Thank you! Awesome and informative review. Great share of the download. Your review of the D5 is the only review I can find. It feels a little cheaper to me than the 100, but I really like the artistic/historic features. My best writing Chinese pens are my Hongdians!

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  10 місяців тому +1

      I would never say cheaper. For one the adjective is too subjective. It feels as good if not better than the 100. The details are more precise than the 100. Weight does not equate to value.

    • @Mikey-ii8ef
      @Mikey-ii8ef 10 місяців тому +1

      @chrisrap52 I totally agree about the subjectivity. I just think the 100 feels and functions better. The piston knob on the D5 feels like plastic, and the piston travel is very short. I like the crisp ornate design and appearance of the D5 better, though. All that said, I have only one 100 and two D5s - lol!

    As you know, I am one of the ancients, but can you tell me why the Chinese can have some great piston-filling mechanisms (I have a Montblanc Writer’s Edition (Charles Dickens) that has a terrible piston-filling mechanism…I don’t even think it is metal (but it could be…doubted). I do like the one on my 1992-gifted 149, but the one on the special edition (which could probably still sell for a hefty, hefty price) is so soft and sticky that I do not use the pen very often for fear it would give out. (I do not know if Montblanc would fix it if it broke, do you? U do not have any original purchase materials, because I was not smart enough to keep them early in the hobby! Well, truth is, I have not gotten any smarter! :) I am getting to the age that I fear flunking that 3-word shot-term short-term recall test the Medicare physical calls for ! :). (2 smilies! Wow!)

      Chinese pens are made with state of the art machines, computer controlled. Made for the masses, more than a billion. These pens won't sell if they don't work. They need to sell many as profit margins are small. Some makers sell whatever they make because of their name, spend more on marketing that these pens cost. Nice that we can experience and enjoy both for what they are. I've been retired for many years. I take many tests & exams that tell me what an old #*&% I am. Thanks for watching.
