    1. Dynamite was a worldwide radio hit and used in the advertisement of Samsung phones, so that's probably why you've heard it on the streets. BTS are Samsung ambassadors.
    2. They debuted on June of 2013, so they've been an official group for almost 10 years, but some of them know each other for around 13 years.
    3. They are seven members, not eight. Four vocalists and three rappers. People know who sings or raps what because they have different vocal timbers and different styles and inflections, you learn to recognize it after listening to them for a while... Just like you learn to recognize anyone's voice if you talk to them enough times and pay attention.
I'll give you big tips about their voices (don't know if this helps or not):
    - Vocalists:
    - V: baritone, so a deeper voice than the rest of the singers of the group. Tends to sing with an airy quality, a dropped larynx and a slower delivery, which makes it sounds kinda as if he's singing through a tube. Soulful voice.
    - Jimin: Contratenor, so it's a very boyish voice, with an androgenous and bright quality on the higher range. Light, delicate voice, with a drastic change in quality when it's in a lower key or using rasp. Sometimes does a "crack" or "crying thing" at the end of phrases.
    - Jungkook: main singer, so he has a lot of lines and does a lot of backup vocals. Angelic youthful singing, very warm and smooth, with a soothing/healing effect. Touching. Always sounds relaxed, as if what he's doing is easy (even when it's not).
    - Jin: his timber is also youthful but more nasal and light too, with a warmer tone on lower notes. More legato approach, like a ballad singer. More piercing/bold/powerful approach to belting.
    - Rappers:
    - RM: masculine rich tone with good projection, very pleasant to the ear, makes you think "oohh, that guy should read audiobooks or be a radio host or recite slam poetry". His rap style tends to be more "classic" and sound cool, badass, passionate and commanding. (Like "a boss", although in reality he's a very diplomatic person.) Uses his natural tone the most.
His writing reads like poetry, it's also very introspective, philosophical and empathetic. Recurrent themes of identity, loneliness and duality/paradox. Analysing how the personal experience is influenced by society and vise-versa. Each time you read his lyrics, you take away something knew, you understand a little more. He makes you think a lot.
    - Suga: has a low speaking voice with a lot of vocal fry, but tends to rap in a higher tone. Expressive, emotional, raw sound. Often likes to rap with a fast flow or an agressive tone. Sometimes has a sardonic, mocking tone. Changes his tone a lot.
His writing is like "an arrow straight to the heart", I mean that it's easy to understand the emotion behind the words, even when he uses metaphors, even when you don't know what he's saying. He uses storytelling and personification a lot. Character driven writing. Recurrent themes of overcoming obstacles/criticism, the double-edge sword of ambition, greed and resentment. Has a "darker" style, I suppose.
    - J Hope: Higher timber than the other rappers, a little more nasal too, loud. Great sense of rhythm and spunky versatile flow. His verses usually elevate the energy of the song (he's the hype man), and usually make you wanna dance or move (he was a street dancer, it's on his blood). Tends to use a more rap-singing style, by default. Also changes his tone a lot. Often uses irony, but in a playful way. Not everything that sounds happy has happy lyrics.
His writing is sincere and straightforward, not overly complicated, but clever and thoughtful. Recurrent themes of hope, being an eternal student of life, wanting to bring peace to humanity, being grateful, trusting yourself and making your own decisions. He gives you good vibes.
As writers, they're all pretty self-aware, socially conscious and empathetic.
If I were to use famous western rappers to illustrate: RM's style is more similar to Nas; Suga is more reminiscing of Eminem; and J Hope has been compared to the Migos (I'm not familiar with them, but I've heard this a lot.)
    4. I will forgive you for slandering Carnival and Mariachi music when Reggaeton is the doom of Latin music... Because I have a kind forgiving heart. Salsa is better though.
    5. Most of their songs are co-written, co-composed and co-produced. Number of credits can vary from 2 to 10 people or more per song, singles tend to have more writers than b-sides. BTS main/most consistent contribution to their music is deciding the topics of songs and writing lyrics. (Outside of recording vocals, delivery and performance, of course.) They usually have production credits on their solo songs though. Spring Day was produced by quite a few people, PDogg, Adora, and some foreigners. Lyrics mostly by RM and Suga.
    6. RM and J Hope are fans of Drake, I don't see the appeal, but they really like him. Good for them, they even meet him once lol
    7. Spring Day is a song that was inspired by the experience of "losing friends due separation, missing them and wishing you could reconcile". This meaning can easily be extended, by interpretation, to the painful experience of "losing loved ones, due to different circumstances (including death)". This song is iconic in Korea, they relate it to grief.
    8. That Joe dude is just a fool, I did my research... And apparently he's always saying bad takes. Seems like a petty guy, and an envious person.

Pretty good, thorough description but I just wanted to push back about j-hope lyrics being "straightforward." I think people who don't dig into them think that but his translations often include paragraphs of elaborations and translators often say he's the most difficult to translate for because he's so referential and often writes really abstractly (like word clouds without a lot of syntactic aid). I spend more time with his lyrics than anyone's. They're very complex. It's just because they read well on their face too, people think that one layer is all there is to it. It's a shame because he tells us that the research part of his writing is the most intensive. I'd love to see him start to get a little credit for that. I'm just constantly blown away by some of the connections he makes.

    • @lobaetoile8440
      @lobaetoile8440 Рік тому +12

@@jhopeur7219 His lyrics are overall pretty straightforward. It doesn't mean he doesn't use figures of speech. It means the message tends to be pretty clear, it's not too obscure or ambiguous. You know what's the core message of each song, or what conclusions he makes, he tells you directly. This is because he writes a lot about his own life experience and has clear beliefs. Regardless of if a song has social commentary or introspection, his stance or his feelings on whatever matter he's bringing up tends to be super straightforward, he makes statements, such as "I want to be a piece of peace, by bringing hope and comfort to everyone I can; I believe it's ok for people to be different and that shouldn't compromise their equality; I remember my struggles and I still have fears, but I decided to live by honoring my own decisions; etc". Straightforward doesn't mean always "literal", and I'm not speaking about complexity, that's another matter, a different criteria. (Of course I'm paraphrasing, and it's also a generalisation of things I've noticed, just a tendency... Blue Side, for example, is rather ambiguous.)
It's hard to explain it without an example of a writer who isn't straightforward but ambiguous or indirect... Namjoon sometimes is direct, sometimes he isn't. Yoongi does tend to be straightforward too, his feelings are delivered very clearly. There's a very famous Cuban singer-songwriter for example, who has lyrics that I would call "not straightforward". The topic of some songs may be explicit, but he often includes descriptions of details that you have no way of knowing exactly what he's referring to, unless he tells you, unless you were there (and no, he usually doesn't explain anything). He has a song for example talking about a blue unicorn. The blue unicorn represents inspiration. I suppose you can interpret that without him telling you, but he never make it explicit, it's abstract. He just sings about the blue unicorn he saw on a dream and how it run away... If you just listen to the song, you could think it's just a children song or that the unicorn is a real dream, the unicorn could be anything. He has a song about women, the chorus says "some women are of fire, some are of snow", the song describes memories and anecdotes of different women who had different roles on his life... But you never know what does he mean with being of fire or of snow, nor which element are the women he mentions. It's all very open to interpretation, despite how many details/descriptions he brings up.
Idk if I am making sense. Hopefully I was able to explain what I meant.
*I also distinguish "complex" from "complicated" or convoluted". Something can be more complex if it has more content or more layers, but it's different than being complicated as being contradictory or overdone or difficult to follow... These terms are different, although not mutually exclusive.
PD: I do understand what you're saying, I do agree that J Hope uses a lot of references and figures of speech, that's why I said his lyrics are clever and thoughtful: smart and well thought out. He does his research, he has recurrent themes... For example, the recurrent use of metaphors about flora and water. He has an excellent use of onomatopoeias. He does this thing of making a twist on a popular saying, it's one of my favorite resources he uses. And did an amazing job at connecting the narrative of the whole album with JITB. The tracklist order made sense, he even payed attention to thematic details with the stage, the performance choices, everything. Because he's a diligent planner and a talented artist. Also, he can do anything, he has versatility. I was only attempting to describe the tendencies on their styles, in order to differentiate them, it doesn't mean they only do what I described.

It broke my heart to a million pieces. No wonder she's called "The Queen" and miraculously has never left the chart since she was released. When he thought it was a regular song about romantic relationships and joked "that's a good line to tell a girl 'how many sleepless nights should I go through to see you", I mumbled to myself, "If only he knew... he would be bawling instead of chuckling".

People new to Kpop (especially BTS) do this a lot. I’m sure that is cultural. It takes a bit of time to NOT assume that all songs about love and longing are about romantic love. Spring Day can sound like a romance song but that’s a shallow interpretation. Same when someone just hears Fake Love in Korean with no subtitles. A lot of assumptions are made while the lyrics are very deep and aren’t blaming the other person. Most English based pop music is extremely shallow and if there’s anything deep about it, listeners don’t notice. Also, Western adult men often have trouble reconciling that they enjoyed BTS while also holding onto what they perceive as masculine and liking a boyband is considered childish and feminine.

Your comment about 17 yo feelings during the Spring Day is accidentally very insensitive (accidentally of course, but still quite rude for the fan base), because the music video for this song is about national tragedy where 300 children about 16-17 years old died horrible death. And song itself about pain, grief, loss and hope. When I first heard this song without context I interpreted it's lyrics about losing someone because of death and MV made me think that it's about losing someone because of suicide. She is The Queen of BTS discography, still on Korean charts after all these years.

Thanks for reacting to Tiny Desk Concert with BTS. We really appreciate your honest response.
You have over 500 comments already so you may never get round to reading mine, but there were a few things that occurred to me while watching and hearing your thoughts and your own questions ...
You asked why you did not know that Dynamite ... well, I don't know. But, it is a simple fact that BTS - efven for their few English songs - do not get a fair amount of coverage on US radio. I've heard authoritative analysis which indicates that this is because their company refuses to bribe radio stations and hosts to play their tracks, which, while it is now "illegal" is still common across US media. I prefer BTS' way of doing this.
Yes there are 7 members, 3 rappers, 4 vocalists (although they can all sing). They all dance. This sing and dance live in live performances. Concerts are amazing, earth-bending experiences, and truly magical. You'll find dance practices online sowing them in the final stages of practicing in the studio - unbelievable...
The audience is fully engaged in performance, and the music is designed so that ARMY has its own part to play - in Spring Day, you might have noticed the humming Woo-oo-oo ... in Concert ARMY sing along for that, but for the final part, BTS hold their mikes up to the audience, and just listen. This song has a very deep history since it is linked with a Korean national tragedy: it has not left the Korean music chart since it was released in 2017.
BTS started training in 2010 (with members joining until 2011) and debuted in 2013. They all lived together for most of the time since then, only moving into their own houses this year. Initially they had a tiny flat with all 7 sharing one room, though they did move into larger houses eventually. They are currently taking a break from group activities to work on solo projects - J-hope headlined Lollapaloosa and released his solo album Jack-in-the-Box in July - I think you would love it.
Yes they are very Korean - I like that about them, because they are very sincere and very personal. They write all their own music, with a range of staff experts from their company, but all their songs reflect their own lives, thoughts and feelings. I love that their music is Korean - some songs - even with subs - have too much wordplay or cultural references for us to ever understand - there are brilliant "explained" videos - always check them out!
They regularly and frequently go "live" to talk with fans, sharing their process for writing, their hard times and their good times and celebrations live online with ARMY. There is a wealth of other content of them just being themselves on holidays etc - too much for them to hide even a wrinkle, so we know they are genuine real and loving people.
Kpop is thought of a genre in the USA, but all it means is "Korean pop". Suga, asked about whether Kpop would be an accurate definition of BTS' genre, said
‘I’m a little bit wary of that but I think rather than approach Kpop as a genre, a better approach would be “integrated content”.’ …
‘Kpop includes not just the music, but the clothes, the makeup, the choreography…all these elements I think sort of amalgamate together in a visual and auditory content package, that I think sets it apart from other music or maybe other genres so again, as I said, rather than approach Kpop as it’s own genre I think approaching it as this integration of different content would be better.’ Metro 28 10 2919 ... BTS performance really does fit into that integrated all-encompassing media, but the range of "genres" that BTS inhabit is wider than for any US artist I can think of. And, yes, they kill them all.
At some point I recommend you look at any one of several "Intro to BTS" films - the most up to date is by Taylor Nakamoto, but Xceleste and others are also great.
But take your time. I'll not point you at one track over another, lots of others have probably done that! But I will mention www.doolsetbangtan.wordpress.com - excellent translations including short notes on wordplay and special cultural references - it has link to the music track so you can listen and follow along...

    Just to answer your questions.
BTS has been a group since June 12th, 2013. However the members were trainees in their company Bighit Entertainment between 2010 - 2013 (thereabouts). They all entered at different times. Also Bighit in short expanded, had subsidiaries, acquired other companies and is now known as Hybe Labels. However Bighit Music exists under the Hybe Label.
7 members - 3 rappers, 4 vocalists. So how do they know who sings which part. Okay just by knowing who are the rappers and vocalists you can tell in general which parts they would take. But it's not that simple right. So to understand the positions you need to know that there's main, lead and sub under the positions - dancer, rapper and vocalist. So there can be main rapper, lead rapper, sub rapper (although not everyone would like to use the word 'sub' because they would just say rapper). Also one of the rappers has sung in their songs and one of their vocalists has rapped in earlier songs. Sometimes for fun they do rap and vocal lines switches. One main way in which they distribute lines is basically who sings that part the best and they all discuss this among themselves.
Yes, BTS takes part in the writing and production of their music along with an in-house team as well as working with people on the outside. Their discography is very extensive (like hundreds of songs) and while they have group songs and solo songs within the groups, they also have solo songs outside of the group as well. Also their youngest member directed their music video Life Goes On for the album Be.
For the Be album "Jimin was responsible for A&R, acting as a link between the group and their management label. Suga, V, and J-Hope handled the production together with Jin and Jungkook; the latter was also responsible for directing the music video. V and RM supervised the graphics and design of the album." (source: Be (BTS album) - wikipedia)

Spring Day is refered to in our fandom as the Queen. She entered the charts 5,5 years ago and still hasn't left. This song means a GREAT DEAL to a lot of people, myself included in my own way. You would have to react to Italian ARMYs explanation video (technically a fan theory) to be able to understand it's impact and significance. It's THAT important. For me, this is what made BTS go from a great group to a group I will always respect and carry with me. This song is THE song.

Btw. Dynamite was a chart topper - 3 weeks at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot100. And it was used in heaps of commercials (e.g. Samsung). It was used during the Super Bowl when they recap the players best moments. It' was HUUUUUUUGE and everywhere! Grammy-nominated song. It broke records over and over again. To think they mrely made Dynamite to cheer ARMYs up during the pandemic, taking a break from the heavy lyrics and just making a bop, so we'd feel better - and then it went on to become a legend.

Much of BTS's work is not about romantic love. While they do have some songs like that, they speak more on social commentary, self-love/self-improvement, and reflection.
They're also in their mid to late twenties (the oldest will be 30 and likely have to enlist in mandatory military service at the end of the year).

Just wanted to say that I'm really thankful you actually paid attention to the lyrics. BTS's lyricism is one of the things they are widely know for, and they write them themselves (and yes, they're involved in the production and general process. They have credits in all of their songs). Spring Day (and its *MV*), specifically, has a deep meaning and it would be amazing if you reacted to some explanation videos, if you're interested of course (the Italian ARMY one is great).
If you'd like to see more live/medley videos, I would recommend their BTS ROOM LIVE (from the 2021 Festa)... they sing some of their hits from the earliest years (BTS debuted on 2013! so they have a huge discography) to present ones. It's a fan-favorite!
If you wanted to react to some MVs, I'd recommend "recent" tracks like Black Swan and ON (Kinetic manifesto film), both from 2020. The 7 members also have solo works, if you'd like to react to them in the future, when you know them better.
If you'd like to know them better, you can check some fan-made videos like "Who is BTS" by xCeleste (she has amazing introductory videos) or "A Guide to BTS Members: The Bangtan 7" by Taylor.
Great reaction! Looking forward for more BTS videos!

RM (blue hair) is my bias, simply due to the way he writes but in all honesty I find something to be admired in every single one of them. BTS are definitely not what the media has made them out to be. They write and produce all their own stuff. Suga (orange glasses) is a highly sought after producer in his own right as well. I would recommend checking out the "Italian Army Spring Day Explanation" but it really does require a warning as the song pays tribute to the victims (mostly children) of the Sewol ferry tragedy .

Their 300+ catalog of music is extensive and varied and usually have a blend of styles and genres and they write, compose, produce, and more. Their live performance are fire and their dancing and interactions with each other and ARMY are beyond imagination, esp. coming from the US where many artists are more about sales and fame and less about connecting with people. You may get some attitude because of a few comments you made LOL but just know that these are some of the hardest working more humble young men you will ever find and ARMY will protect them in part because of this but also in part because of some of the cr@p that people have done to them over the years. The 3rd song spring day is a very sentimental song for the group and the fandom it’s been given different meaning through the years. Like for Covid wishing for the pandemic to end the spring day to come. The music video though has references to the sewol ferry tragedy that took the lives of many students on a school trip and the shadiness the went into making it happen. Along with missing loved ones ect ect ect. Thank you for reacting, I hope there is more to come 💜💜

i am BTS Army since 2018 and i am now 38y/o. not really into kpop before i met them. but now all my playlist has a full BTS DISCOGRAPHY in them with 2% of other artist title tracks. their music since 2013 as a group and as a solo they do it with purpose with meaning and made with high quality. i can guarantee say that they are one of those artists who made music without a skip on their full discography. especially if you like a lot of genre of music they cater to it all. PLUS they are all GOOD HUMAN BEINGS.. that's my cementing factor why i love them so much. i love their personalities each of them i love their chemistry and brotherly love that rarely find in music groups that has egos and personal hatred to their own team. they love and respect each other and their are also their biggest fan and critic. they are one in a decade kind of artists.

I am 71. You will find that they have fans of all ages. They are my favorites of all time. Live performances are the best. They haven't won a grammy, but they have been nominated twice. They have tons of rap/vocals. Plus songs just by the rap line and songs by the vocal line as well as solos. They cover it all.

Bts debuted on 2013 but they've been together for more time before. They are like brothers, love, care and respect each other. We have the rapine( 3 members) and the vocal Line (4 members). They have all kinds of music and what I like the most of them is that most of their songs are written, composed, produced by them. Their lyrics are very deep and they advocate for peace and love among everyone. They have the love yourself camping with Unicef and promote self love and self-esteem among teenagers. BTS is in Korean BangTan Soyondan which means BulletProof boyscoutts and in English it means beyond the scene, being bulletproof against steroptypes, criticisms, hate, anger, etc.

Every song they sing or rp has a story of experience - Spring Day has a south Korean story of loss. It's kinda like an anthem, and although you may not understand the words you can feel the passion, warmth, and feel like crying. This is a deep songs, not to be messed with. It has a broad meaning.

Hey! Always glad to welcome a new fan of BTS! BTS are a 7 member group (3 rappers and 4 vocalists) currently between the ages of 25 and 29. They started in June of 2013 and all 7 members take part in the production process from writing lyrics, composing, and/or producing. If you want some more info on them, I strongly suggest you watch an introduction video. There are a lot of them out there, but one of the best and most recent is "A Guide to BTS Members: The Bangtan 7". It's a long video but ARMY (BTS fandom) will watch with you! Also, for more music, I recommend you watch a video called "BTS Room Live 2021 Festa" in which they sing a medley of 9 of their songs in a chill live setting. Looking forward to more reactions from you!

14:00 yes they absolutely write and produce their own songs. If you check out the credits you'll see some members are always credited. Also background info: There was a ferry accident which killed many school children. The song spring day was made to honour the children who died

BTS is a 7-membered group from South Korea with members aging from 24 to 29 years old. They have been around for almost 9 years now and they usually sing in Korean/Konglish and only have 3 songs fully in English in their whole discography of 200+ songs. They are one, if not, the most versatile artists I’ve ever heard (in my opinion). From hiphop to rnb to pop, name any genre, most likely, they have it. They produce and write their own music, incorporate a storyline in their discography as well as different themes such as philosophy, psychology, politics, women empowerment, anti-bullying, mental health, and many more. This is why they have such an impact to the world which brought them to the UN 3 times and gave speeches as well. I can’t reiterate any more coz this might be an essay hehe. They mean a lot to me, coz they changed my life (mental health-wise).
+ I highly recommend reacting to their MV’s (music videos) and these videos if you want to get to know them more:
    - xCeleste’s “This Is BTS: Introduction to BTS” video 👉 ua-cam.com/video/3cESARetI9U/v-deo.html (the shortest and contains general information about the group however it’s from 2020)
    - Taylor Nakamoto’s “An Introduction to the 7 members of BTS” 👉 ua-cam.com/video/huV_yIdxZPY/v-deo.html (the best one so far, about the members, a bit lengthy but the most updated version)
    - Rice Squad’s “The Most Beautiful Life Goes On: A Story of BTS” (2022 update) 👉 ua-cam.com/video/0KonKFssKnM/v-deo.html (lengthy as well but talks about the background of the group like how they were formed)
+ Imma just flex my boys right now and say some of their recent achievements that makes me so proud.
    - They are Grammy nominees for 2 times in a row (2021 and 2022) 🏆
    - They topped billboard hot 100 with 3 songs last 2020 and 2 songs in 2021 (all debuted at the top) 🔥
    - Their latest #1 on the billboard hot 100 were the songs “Butter” & “Permission to Dance”. Butter topped the charts for 10 weeks and stayed on the top 10 for 15 weeks 🧈
    - They have 5 #1 albums (Billboard) for 3 consecutive years. 💪
    - They are UNICEF Goodwill ambassadors and gave a speech in the United Nations General Assembly THRICE now and currently renewed their UNICEF project 🇺🇳
    - They are Korea’s pride to the point their president appointed them as Special Presidential Envoys for Future Generations and Culture and are considered as diplomats as well (they even have the exclusive diplomatic passports) 🇰🇷

BTS writes lyrics that can put a teenager in their moody feels but also Spring Day is about loss so the whole “I love you but I hate you it’s easier to blame you” is actually survivors guilt when someone you love has passed. The love hurts so much & you’re angry they left you even though it’s irrational & you know death is a part of life. What they write applies to many different situations in life that everyone can relate to.

Fun fact about the last song and the guy rapping that you really liked at 16:28 (his name is Yoongi):
Spring Day can be interpreted in many different ways (romantic, familial, platonic, etc.), but a lot of fans believe that in Yoongi's verse, he was specifically referencing a friend of his that he lost due to certain decisions the friend made when they were younger, because Yoongi made a song about him in 2020 called Dear My Friend, and some of the lines from that song match his verse in Spring Day almost verbatim:
"Would it be that you’ve changed, or I’ve changed, uh
I hate even the time that is passing right now, I guess it’s us that have changed
Hey, I hate you, hey, I hate you
Hey, even at this moment as I say this, I miss you"
