He is such a pro vocalist and he has something in his soul that transcends being professional; It is that something that, in my opinion, elevates his music into Art.
My career is Radio. I have worked all formats: Rock, AC, Smooth Jazz, Urban Jazz and Nostalgia...my listeners knew I loved the Man and playing his tunes over the airwaves. Gotta say when I played this one on KBLX the Quiet Storm in the 90's, the studio speakers were cranked and I was in the best mood ever! This is a gem, thanks for the post.
I used to see him & his big band a lot in the early 70's. He was playing a lot. Van Morrison lived in Marin in the 70's was playing a lot . Asleep At The Wheel staying in Oakland before moving to TX. The concert club scene was really jumping. Boz was married to a society woman and would be on the society page all the time. Been to his club a lot. Never made it to his restaurant. Now he owns The Great American Music Hall.
he probably was hiring for a local band for the show and said "must know how to play "I'll be the one" And so they applied, thinking he meant THIS version LOL ua-cam.com/video/OrmfT-jkRvU/v-deo.html
the man needs a black band. period. that band sounds like they just got done playing a song for Elton John. None of them have swing time AT ALL. and the bassist isnt even swinging the bass line. Its like horrible. And the lead guitarist sounds like he couldnt get the timing of the real song, so skaggs was like just DO THIS... and thats what he did through the whole song.. LOL And then he had the nerve to put wah wah on it. LOL down beat wah wah... this was horrid. the keyboardist.. NO swagger at all. he played the mallet effect, with DOWNBEAT LOL no upbeat swing at all LOL I bet you skaggs was like... Oh forget it, just play Freebird. LOL

A Chicago Steppers Classic! They could have jammed on it a little longer.
