  • After more than 2 and a half years, Jonty finally gets to go into his happy place: the mountains - specifically, Mount Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo. Experience everything Mount Kinabalu has, from summiting 4095m in time for sunrise, hiking through the jungle, sludging through torrential downpours and dangling off the world at 3776m on the world's highest via Ferrata, the Low's Peak circuit!
    Special thanks to CK at X-Trekkers who organised the whole trip! For more information and other trips that X-Trekkers offer, please visit www.x-trekkers.com

    Amazing video! Do you have a fear for heights? Did you feel like you were in danger or could slip and fall? I'm amazed at your ability to hold the camera with one hand while dangling sideways on a rock only holding on to the rope with one hand! By the way what equipment did you use to film while doing the VF? Was it a gopro? Thanks!!!

      Hey, thanks! No fear of heights, and I feel quite comfortable in a harness, trusting that it’ll catch me if I need it 😂 I used a GoPro! Glad you enjoyed the video - are you looking to do Kinabalu too?

    I did this in 2019 and watching your video brings back memories! I didn't manage to do the via ferrata due to some error with the booking so seeing you do it makes me definitely want to go back and do everything!
    Was definitely cheering you on as you were coming down lol. Can't believe how upbeat you are throughout and through the downpour even! 🤣
    Definitely recommend bringing magnesium spray next time for legs when coming down, it helped me with the pain. I also took high altitude medication prior to the journey to help with acclimatisation and didn't suffer to badly from the thinner air.

      Hey there, we have a handheld grip
      for it that had a chord to attach around your wrist should you happen to let go! You can get various mounts for them to attach to your wrist etc that then Velcro around too.

    great overview video, i watched all of it!! I want to ask if it's mandatory for everyone to head out at 2am for the summit? It looks like a horrible traffic jam and the worst way to hike. How long did the via ferrata take you? I'm debating whether to do the full on Low's Peak or the baby Walk the Torq. Was it worth the extra 2 hours or so?

    • @WONDERLUSTworld
      @WONDERLUSTworld  6 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching! I don’t think it is mandatory for the 2am leave for the summit, but in order to complete the Low’s Peak via Ferrata you have to be at the start point at 6am. We were first on the summit that day and it was deathly quiet - a beautiful experience to be honest. I loved the full via Ferrata - the mini one is nowhere near as close to the experience we had. We compared notes with someone else doing it that day. The via Ferrata took us 3 hours and we were told we did it quite quickly. There were a couple of others behind us who were fit and strong and they took over 4 hours. I was chasing CK all the way! Hahah.

    • @WONDERLUSTworld

      Hello! I did get travel insurance, but I’m afraid I can’t remember with whom I did this - my friend is in insurance and he sorted it out for me… I did the advanced one, which lasted about 3 hours - Walk the Torq doesn’t have the views like the on in this video, but I think is good to get to grips with via Ferrata 😊 Do you have a trip coming up?

    What kind of training you did before going for this hike? I’m not an active person, but keep training myself with jogging 7-10km. Occasionally climbing staircase.

    • @WONDERLUSTworld
      @WONDERLUSTworld  Рік тому

      Hello! 7-10km is good, I’d say doing some incline training is helpful. An hour on a step machine every week will be good. It’s just good to know the quad burn feeling! Heheh. Good luck!! When are you going?

    • @baze3SC
      @baze3SC 11 місяців тому

      I was 41 when I made it. Starting 2 months prior to the climb I would climb 1000 staircase steps two times a week. Before that I was moderately active, not overweight but I definitely wouldn't describe myself as an avid hiker. The first part of the climb typically takes around 5 hours, we made in in 3.5 hours. That allowed us to have a bit more rest and even start later for the second part for the climb. It's a slog but definitely doable and worth it. Fitness is only part of the equation because even very fit people can experience the effects of altitude. The way your body reacts will determine your level of comfort. Climbing down nearly killed my knees, I was wasted but happy :) Trekking poles definitely help during descent.
