  • Ever wondered about the differences in the Traction Control settings on the 890 & 790 Adventure bikes? (Me too....since 99% of the time I ride everywhere in Rally mode on Slip 3...though I will toggle up and down on the slip settings once in a while.)
    9 Slip settings in Rally mode alone? Then there's Rain mode, Street mode and Off-Road mode - but what does it all mean? 12 options to choose from for traction control - but which one is right for any surface?
    Basically, it's been raining so much that right now the back yard is more or less just mud with some grass on top of it - a very good test track for low traction environments. The grass visually shows the traction differences better than in straight up mud, and it's slightly uphill.
    So, since it's me and I have no adult supervision - I do side by side runs on the grass in my boggy paddock to show you the differences in how it goes in all of the modes....so you get to ride along and see if I can go full throttle, then we look at how much it controlled the back wheelspin, and you can see and hear how fast it will let it go. Excited yet?
    It was hot and muggy work my friends...I sweated through 3 singlets changing rear wheels and doing this video...then raking it over afterwards....whew - the things I do for you guys (and in this case that's a generic 'guys' which includes all pronouns)! Did someone say it was time for a beer? :)

    Wow, thank you for your time and effort you put in this video. I wish you had chance to do a test in deep loose sand in TC1 790vs890.

    Great video. Rally Mode has an aggressive throttle which would be good with more traction to lift the front for obstacles.

    You made a very good job! It also shows quite clearly the difference in torque between 790 and 890: I guess it's more valuable for on-road riding than off-road, where the 790 is more than enough. One should also consider that on your 890 Rally you have much better suspension set than on the 790 R, thus providing more traction: with the same XPLORE on the 890 you would have had even more difficulties in controlling wheel spin.
    FOr off-road riding I still love my 790R definitely!!! :-P

    I like Rally mode TC on 5, with the throttle set on either Off Road or Rally.

      Yep, that works too...on my 790 I used to use Street throttle off-road to make it less jerky, I find off road throttle a bit too laggy feeling. Cheers

    great work ... I was left wondering is the best possible combo might be Rally Mode / Offroad throttle response / and TC adjusted accordingly. I find in very low traction situations, up hills, the more linear / doughy offroad getts better traction than Street / Rally for a given TC level. What are your thoughts ?

      Thanks, yes I agree that the more laggy throttle response in off-road throttle is definitely there for that reason....to lessen the chance of wheelspin. It does feel like it knocks half the horsepower down, but in reality it's just slowing down the throttle bodies from opening. In my video I went with the most aggressive throttle setting when in Rally mode for the demo, to make everything even and make the differences more apparent. Enjoy the ride :)

      @@890RallyAdventureR I was wondering what would be the effect if off-road throttle and manually adjusting TC .. (that is, outside of Rally mode, offroad mode has a preset TC control which appeared not ideally set for the muddy test track). I reckon the fastest drag peformance in these condtions might be using Rally / Offroad at some TC level per trial and error - like maybe TC = 7

      @@sritter A good balance for me is Rally mode with street throttle setting, then TC dialed to suit terrain. Makes it easier to blip the throttle to lighten or lift the front if and when required. Rally throttle is super perky, so street or offroad setting is my preference off the beaten track.
