    This is the best real world test I’ve seen on YT. Nothing compares. It should be compulsory viewing for any prospective buyer who actually rides in moderately tough conditions. Most of the reviews I’ve seen just show owners running around sealed roads. Great observation when stopped in that rut.

      How is that?? He showed Position 1 & 9 on traction control and nothing in between?? Looks like he needed to go through more of the numbers to give a good assessment? Not trying to be negative, I just wish he would have tried a couple other positions besides 1 & 9? Or did I miss something?

    Great review! I found myself use 1-5 at gravel roads. 7 equals to the TC setting in offroad mode. Tried that in deep sand combined with mud and was impressed over how the bike traction itself out of situations. I just have to throttle up. It will take a bit learning going from no TC experience at all. This bike grow's on me at every trip. Happy advriding my friend!

      Definitely test ride one Riley, if you can. Still heavier than your 690, but I think you would find it generations ahead of the old F800.

    Maybe this wheel slip control is more for surfaces that you expect traction on rather than those you don't? Hit a slippery spot on the road and you can get caught out easily yet on a surface where you expect a bit of spin and are standing up ready for it. It's been a long time since I have off roaded and always used to try and modulate the throttle to achieve the best or most suitable drive for the surface. I have a big heavy road bike and still ride the same if I have to get off the tar.

    • @Nerb1
      @Nerb1  5 років тому +1

      Im not going to convince you! What is the disadvantage of the R? None. It can do everything the non-r can do AND its better off-road. I really dont see the disadvantage.
      That said, a non-r can still do anything.... just a bit harder. If you go back to my early videos, you will see Mark on his Honda 600 hornet taking it up crazy tracks.... so even a sport bike can go offroad.... if you abuse it enough ;)

    How much would these help a rider who did not even understand what was happening? I have an older model now with no traction control and mostly I do well with my own brain ...but I am perhaps overly cautious..deep sand stresses the hell out of me and that seems to be the only place I lose it ....just wondering what TC is going to do for the likes of me? BTW I HAVE SEVERAL times stepped out significantly in canyon pavement pushing things ...it's sand on the asphalt mostly....bike simply briefly let's go and hooks back up ...heart stops for a second sometimes

    Nerb.....I’ve heard comment that the motor runs very hot. Supposedly due to fuel tank location “wrapping” around the motor. Have you found this to be a fact?????

    • @Nerb1
      @Nerb1  4 роки тому

      It does get hot very quickly once going slow, but it never overheated. Once the thermo fans started up it seemed to be fine. In comparison, my T7 also gets to the point of the fan coming on very quickly and its motor is very exposed. I think it is a parallel twin thing. I dont think it was something to be concerned about. Just make sure that fan comes on.

    rally mode disables lean angle traction control. not recommended on the street.

  • @BigStrath
    @BigStrath 3 роки тому

    You should do better with a lower slip setting (towards 1) in mud/sand because it won’t cut the motor and cause you to loose momentum. This also takes some rider skill not to wide open the throttle and just spin the rear wheel. However the great thing about the bike is you can set what works for you and change it on the fly.

    What would be AWESOME (if you ask me) would be voice control modes! Including,for instance " LOFT NOW!" where the computer takes instant control of clutch and throttle and performs what is required to LOFT the front end skyward! Or say aloud "DRIFT mode" and every turn the bike adjusts throttle and clutch to step the rear end OUT....How about "HILL mode" where the computer simply does everything possible to support climbing a gnarly hill??

    I think traction control level 7 might be a good number for climbing that hill. I say that because one of the journalist's during the Morocco 790 release tried to climb a rocky hill with no (or maybe level 1) traction control. He failed to get up the hill. Birchy (or whoever was nursing that group) suggested using level 7. He tried that and made it up the hill. I think he was surprised.
    PS Can you please rubbish the 790R more. Stop saying it is so good. I want to buy the cheaper T700 😊

      I think that as an owner gets used to the bike, they will slowly work out which number to use when they see a hill. I now think that all bikes with TCS should be adjustable like this.... its awesome.

      Was a good demonstration.
      Also doing the hill a few times in a row you get to know the track, when and where to put on power, but as you saw from that log cross it still spun up.

    790 has two models S and R. S is good on the road but sucks in the dirt. With R model is the opposite - sucks on the road ( need steering damper ), but it is good on the dirt.
    both models are packed with totally unnecessary complex electronics.....
    They are great to go to nearest caffe or shopping center.......where most of them will be used any way.
    In adventure bike LESS is MORE. You don't want adventure bike packed with sensors and electronics - and being stranded somewhere in the middle of now where because you cant fix the problem by hot wiring without resistor ( like the side stand for example )....and that should be a simple fix.
    COMPLEXITY caused by OVER DESIGNING that can leave you stranded is ENGINEERING FAULT.
