  • A friend gave me a jar of Testors paint from 1971 and that gave me an idea to see if it still airbrushes like new. I test it against a new jar of Testors of the same color.

I'm 50 now and am getting back into models/painting etc. and somehow managed to hold-on to my Testor's paints from when I was a kid. All of my round and square Testor's are still in excellent shape and they're 45+ yrs old - love em. Thank you again for your vid's - they've been of great help!

You can't beat Testors. It upsets that they will never be around anymore. I'm 54, and remember riding my bike to the local hobby shop to buy a new model kit and Testors paints needed, in the mid-70s through early 80s. That was the good old days. After that I fell in love with the Model Masters in both enamel and acrylic. I'm going to try and buy as much Testors paint as I can find. I've been out of model building for many years now, but recently decided to get back into it. Anyway, I've always been a huge fan of Testors paints and products. They used to make really nice kits also. Take care.

I STILL have a few paint jars in my old stuff that has 25 cents stamped on the top! Testors, Pactra, Revell and Tamiya all had those 1/4 fl oz jars at the time and I think Humbrel always came in those tins back in those days. For the record, I have been painting models, dioramas and minis since 1967 (I was six going on seven and was copying my three older brothers). Now, I am getting my wife involved with D&D while I wish to get back into painting minis, making dungeons, terrain, modules and adventures.
I like your stuff as it is so thorough and well presented.
Once again, thanks for taking the time. It's really helping me 'get the rust' out of my skills.

Great test on 50 year old testors paint. The paint still paint like the new one. I know they made a bunch of different colors back then for painting car models that I have good memories of building them..I still have my old badger air brush from that time period and it still works great. Things back then were made to last the test of time. It will be interesting to see if the new paints can stand up to 50 years. Thanks for sharing. Be safe and see you in your next video.👍🚢🚂⛵🚚

True confessions. I am 61 and still have several bottles and tins of Testors and Humbrol paints that I bought in the early 70's, mostly colours I bought for one off kits i.e. I have that same 1154 green here I used for a Revell Austin Healey 100-6(still have that model too, I'm a bit of a pack rat...). Great video! Cheers.

I never expected the Testors enamel to hold up that well. Just last summer I went through all of my old paints and found that several of my old Testors paints (both the sqaure bottle and the old Model Master round bottle) had dried out. I must not have cleaned the threads on the jars or the caps well enough the last time I used them. I do still have a few that are usable though. Thanks for doing this one, it was very enlightening!

Getting back into scale model building after an extended sabbatical from it and I have found your videos to be an excellent source of information and insight. I have watched a significant portion of your library over the past couple months and it has helped me a lot in getting back into the hobby. Definitely saves us a lot of the trial and error in figuring out what works best in what situation. Regarding old paints whether its enamel or acrylic, I had good results with several brands of paint. I stopped model building for about 20 years. I had shipped my paints, supplies, models, etc... from Hawaii to Arizona and upon breaking out the different types of paints either enamel, acrylic, most of them even some of the used bottles were still good and able to airbrush. Love your expertise and the way you do things. I appreciate all the info and showing the modeling world the things you can use for anything in regards to model building.

  • @Mr.redacted.
    @Mr.redacted. 2 роки тому +2

Wow, you really tagged a memory for me. It was '64 or '65 and that was the second paint I put through my first airbrush, a new Wen extermal mix. The first paint however was the flat black I was putting the green over on a brand new Revell Corvette Stingray. I later did the same with the Testors red metalic on a '32 Crown Victoria. Testors no. 7 red was my favorite. Tip: don't try sanding the metalic. Get it on really smooth so you don't have to. Then a couple coats of clear.
That silver in the bottle is the way they always came off the rack back then, not because it's old.
For cleaning the brush: Testors is enamel so you should use mineral spirits or turpentine.
I thought they outlawed lacquer and lacquer thinner because it had Toluene in it. (VOC)

That's crazy longevity. I have a bunch of Mr color that's just a couple years old that all have to be rescued with lacquer thinner and tons of stirring any time I want to use them. The majority have very, very clean threads and haven't been open since shortly after I got them ( took a break for a year or so and just getting back into the habit of building now).

I use the extreme patriot. I switched out the high trigger and put it on my sotar. It’s a more exact trigger. It’s great. Only downside to the extreme is the mac valve doesn’t work. I just opened it all the way up and glued it there. So I don’t lose the pin. Is a great airbrush though. Not as good as the sotar. But still good.

I inherited my Dad's Testors paints and I think they are even older. The bottles are taller and the caps are smaller. Still, they are just as fresh now as they were back then. One thing about metallics - you need to paint them over a silver or gold base instead of grey primer. Metallics are translucent, so they will show the base color through it. Refraction of the light from below.

Wow! Cool! That's almost as old as the stuff I used to use. Regarding price: i remember paying 15 cents for Testors in the 60s. Back in the 60s I was in my teens and built all kinds of models, but I didn't know diddly about paints. The local drug store carried a lot of models and a full rack of Testors paints - mostly the gloss enamels. Lots of memories from those little square bottles!

I really enjoy your videos. I’m getting back into modeling after 20+ years. I’m learning stuff about painting that I never knew back when I was in the hobby. And thanks for sharing your testors storage. I’ve been looking for a good storage solution for testors paint.

I use a small wood case for my Testors. it also annoy me that I can't easily see the color by the cap and the names are written so small. The solution I found is to just paint the top of the cap the first time I use a new bottle. Not only do I see the color but I can also see the difference right away between a gloss and a matte.

Amazing. Watching the 50 year old paint apply to the spoons was crazy! I think I actually prefer the old color over the new one!
The amount of knowledge you have, and are willing to share with the community is staggering. Your videos really pack a lot of entertainment and education into every thorough piece of content you produce.
Can’t wait to see the next set in your Mecha Empire paints! I love that Mamba Green, lime/neon green is one of my favorites, so I’m glad to hear you’re looking at something similar.
Oh man, and that Xtreme Badger brush looks absolutely sick! Can’t wait for that review.
    Thanks!!!

Okay I gonna have to raid my dads old stash of testors paint he has, when he used to paint his football teams for his Tudor electric football game. Those paint jars are definitely from the 70’s I loved to see hm paint those little plastic football figures.

It's hilarious how he accidentally put the wrong lid on the 50 year old paint and the new lid still fits.

I am new to airbrushing. I enjoyed viewing your instructive demonstrations and feel encouraged to get the paint flowing. I was leaning towards acrylic paints for many model railroading projects, but now I can begin to see several applications where enamel will be a better option. I have a collection of testers paints that is at around 25 years old - so definitely will not toss those. Thanks so much for sharing and teaching a newcomer to the hobby. BTW - off subject but I loved Camp Yawgoog in Rockville, RI when I was a scout leader back in the day! Cheers!

I never would have guessed a jar that old would still work, but then again the deal with storing upside down also explains why some of my older jars went south. Another great video!

Imagine my disappointment when looking for chrome silver in a tinlette ,not the same these days. I remember the old Airfix as I opened the tin and it was like molten metal inside . Also I love that colour over black the flakes really pop.

    Delighted, BUT, not surprised :)
I found a handful of 80's humbrol enamels in an old chest, a few years back and they too worked, after some vigorous stirring.
Keep up the good work. Your vids are truly appreciated.
