      Austin Trains I was filming a train in downtown Salem Ohio, and as I was turning around I saw the tail of a trucks trailer on the crossing ahead. The engineer was blaring the horn and the trailer was moved out of the way in time. The whole episode is caught on camera I'll have to upload it sometime

    I think we can all agree: that train has bloody amazing brakes.

    • @jovetj
      @jovetj 6 років тому +73

      The ability of a train to stop depends on the type of braking used, and its speed and mass. Heavy trains take longer to stop. They can be heavy because they're longer or because they're full of cargo or both.

      There was a guy that committed suicide on the tracks where I work. The train stopped as quickly if not faster than this one. It took them 3 hours to investigate the accident. CSX railroad police came out and had the engineer test the horns, lights and bell even though they knew it was a suicide. It was terrible, the guy was crossing the tracks with a friend when the train was coming. At the last second he suddenly turned around and ran onto the tracks and was struck.

    • @Ashley_van_Schooneveld
      @Ashley_van_Schooneveld 6 років тому +22

      Train brakes are very effective. A mile long train booking 65mph will take a nearly mile to stop in full emergency, the whole train length. A car travelling on a highway at the same speed could take 12-15 times the length of the car itself. Which has the best braking ability?

      With that tude the super trucker is lucky he's not the sole occupant of a body bag headed to the morgue.
      We've had to go back later to retrieve pieces that were missed in the initial recovery-- parts are parts, whether in the big bag with the zipper or a handy little biohazard bag. Doesn't matter if it's a rice grinder, a low rider, a custom cruiser, big truck, or large car-- train wins. That big hood doesn't reflect intuition, experience, or common sense. Newsflash: just the locomotive sitting still can outweigh your shiny little tractor, trailer, and load's typical max allowable weight by 5 times.

    In the years when I was in law enforcement, I always, always, was told by driver of the vehicle hit, the crossing signals were not operating when the accident occurred. One fool even told me the train crew came to the crossing and turned the signals on! Of course, I always charged the person who was hit by the train. The best one was right after a hurricane, one of the inspectors for an electric company was hit on the tracks at an unguarded crossing. He said the train was not blowing its whistle. Another inspector arrived to say he had been talking to the other inspector, heard a train horn, then the connection was lost.

I seen one truck that was in the area small little single axle day cab about 28-30ft trailer making a local delivery No signal. and NO train horn blowing . problem is there are houses on one side that block your view down the track He got clipped I only know cause i was behind him

      Why would you call this dude names? Just remember something, Austin Trains did what any honorable person would have done. He saved the police & NTSB from many hours of trying to figure out what went wrong. There is a difference between right & wrong & making a mistake & when someone has clear proof of this , it is honorable to let others know of this proof so that we can all learn the truth about how mistakes cause accidents. We can learn from those mistakes. The truck driver make a judgement error & ended up on the tracks while the lights were flashing giving a warning that a train was coming. I do not know what the driver was thinking or doing, but he starts to cross the tracks while the lights are clearly flashing & the bells are sounding & the train s also blasting its horn, stops, & than starts backing up. He just wasn't fast enough in getting off the tracks. He needs to take responsibility for his mistake, learn from it, help pay for any damages, & move on.

      ALWAYS!. barry.
      Even if train derails ( unlikely with these 195t locos) you still can't stop it.
      In Australia a truck went into the side of the 2nd loco ( 130t) of a freight train doing 70 MPH, train derails, & he ended up wearing the 3rd loco + a decent proportion of 40 or 50 odd freight cars.
      Took days to find his body.Train drivers OK, lead loco seperated & did not derail
      & in Melbourne twice at the same crossing a 21t tram & 30t tram collided with trucks that failed to give way. the trams derailed & won't be repaired ( older trams anyway) but no passenger seriously injured & both trucks lost their loads creating a sight to behold. Dozens of beer kegs, everywhere from one truck & soil from an overturned dump truck in the 2nd collision.
      Resault, about = (despite the lost loads dominating the scene) & these were only trams/trollys/streetcars hit by heavy trucks.

      Pennsylvania towns like this are very complicated to drive through. This guy was in a day cab and he should’ve known that area very well. He probably drives it every week or more. I can almost guarantee he was simply in a big hurry and let this situation slip his judgment. I’m a driver of 20 years, it’s not if you fuck up it’s when. The trick is to mitigate the fuck ups and not run into trains.

    I cannot believe that is an unprotected crossing! Like, wut?!? It's in the middle of town, very little not almost no line of sight around the curve for both the semi and the train. Woof! Nice video too. You did the best thing possible on your escape plan, seriously.
    I typically prefer to stand on the closest corner/edge/sidewalk to the approaching train for this exact mistake. At least the struck vehicle will get hit and move past you, not act as a battering ram to you. Good awareness and I respect that you even tried to yell to the truck to stop, most wouldn't have the spatial/situational awareness you showed here.

    Geese, train horn, crossing bell and crossing lights weren't enough for the truck driver?? (It certainly looks like the windows are rolled down on the truck) Nice job on the video. Can you see earlier in your footage when the truck pulled onto the roadway? I liked your reaction when you heard and then panned to the crossing. "No, no, no NO! NO!!" I particularly like the SD70's headlight refection in the trucks paint in the video frames before impact. I genuinely think driver training should once again include "LOOK, LISTEN, LIVE" 'cause if he'd MERELY listened this could have been COMPLETELY avoided..

    • @frank55025
      @frank55025 7 років тому +1

      the top lights weren't on, and trucks are quite insulated from outside noises(if not outright then by the noise of the truck)...on top of that that crossing is pretty tough to verify the tracks are clear. if you've never driven a truck yourself please don't judge

      @jovetj 6 років тому +4

      Crossing bells and train bells are for pedestrians. They aren't intended to warn vehicles, especially at a distance required to be able to stop in time. The lights should have been enough warning for him. Since the video does not show the truck approaching the crossing, I've tried to hear whether the truck stops for the flashing lights. But it's too hard for me to tell.
      *frank55025*
      The cantilever lights were on. The video doesn't show them very brightly because they're not aimed at the camera-they're aimed at the road. And cameras are not perfect, so what the camera sees may not be what the human eye would see.
      If you can't be absolutely sure the tracks are clear and no trains are coming, then don't cross the tracks. If you can't be absolutely sure that your vehicle will completely fit on the other side of the crossing, then don't cross the tracks.
      I also thought, at first, he was looking to make a left turn. But I'm skeptical he needed to pull that far forward to be able to make left turn there.
