Great haul we mash carrot and parsnip together ( carrots and it’s cousin mum used to call it ) also good in curries or curried snags soups ( a bit hot at the moment )
Hey Rachel😊 Thanks so much. Ooh yum, that's a great idea! They would be very tasty with carrots like that and perfect in a curry or soup when the weather cools off.
I very happy for you to get the Food bank Food is very expensive everywhere I don’t know how People can afford Food for there God bless You sweet Friends Cathy from America 🇺🇸 🙏🏻✝️☮️🌹💐🌺🍀🙏🏻✝️☮️🌹
I wish there were stores in my area that had discounted produce. Occasionally Save a Lot will have a few items discounted, but not many. And that is a very low end store to begin with. There is no reason why all stores cannot severely discount older produce or meats, canned goods or other things that they are going to chuck into the dumpster. In the back of most stores, where the dumpster is, you can find truck loads of perfectly edible foods of all kinds, refrigerated, canned, boxed, etc. and expiration date is not even here yet. It makes me sick to know that people must go piling through a dumpster to get enough to eat, and they aren't even homeless. At the very least they could be donated to a food bank. I know a lot of it is, but a lot of it isn't, and there doesn't seem to be a reason why. I do know that people will put refrigerated items on a shelf rather than take it back to the refrigerated section, and by the time store workers find it, it may be warm, so they chuck it. But not everything falls under that criteria.
This!! My biggest bug bear is that some supermarkets decently reduce but others don't. Eg I've got 2 woolies close to me, one starts markdowns 2 days before, the day before they do it twice more, and donate to local pantries that night so it's 'in date' for them to distribute the next day or freeze. The other one starts the night before at about 10-15% off, the day of use by a little bit more and by 6pm (stores close at 9pm where I am) you are lucky if you find 50% off. They then have to throw all of it out because they can't freeze to donate and its too late for pantries to pick up and freeze within legal guidelines. It absolutely blows my mind. Also, I've been to more wealthy suburbs who have huge discounts and really low wealth suburbs and minute discounts. It should be standard across the board or chains to follow the same discount protocol's and times
Yes I wish that happened more too. After all the time, effort and money farmers invest growing or producing the food, the transportation (and shipping costs) not to mention store and staff expenses involved to stock an item on the shelf... only then to send it to landfill and nobody get to eat the food makes no sense and is absolutely ridiculous!! The way things are managed by some stores would make a big difference breaking this cycle. I couldn't agree more, sending perfectly good food to landfill when so many people are struggling and hungry is unacceptable.
Thanks so much for watching and for the suggestions, hopefully I'll share more in future😊 In case you haven't seen already here's a link to some cooking videos I've posted already: ua-cam.com/play/PLFF3_95ikoljo3aAnJ1ymNHVnJbUEWFEN.html
Thanks so much Kathleen😊 Yes it was a lovely selection in the fruit and veggie box this time. The watermelon was especially appreciated! Stay warm over there💕
Hey Suzzie😊 Thanks so much, yes we were very blessed indeed. I love the mystery bags or boxes too! It makes things heaps of fun doesn't it?! Love getting different foods that I wouldn't ordinarily get the chance to try!
I too love roasted parsnips, or cooking them in a winter veggie soup, but not a great option when the weather is so hot. To avoid turning the oven on, you could try making a parsnip mash, or I did see a recipe for parsnip and carrot fritters. Grate equal quantities of parsnip and carrot, combine with egg, flour, salt and a little milk to form a batter. Shallow fry until golden and crisp. Apparently works best if you make small thin fritters.
Hey Judy😊 Thanks, that's a great idea to grate them and make fritters with them. It's definitely too hot to put the oven on if I can avoid it! That sounds like the way to go!
Watermelon 🍉 is a pricey treat in WA😊 , enjoy yours🎉 Over here we have just slipped into another heatwave 😮, so also very hot and very sticky. Lovely haul to help fill the pantry 👍
Awesome value! We are shopping at a co-op now. We only go to supermarkets to buy things we can't get at food co-op. Times are tough atm. Take care and stay safe and dry.
Wow a great fruit and vegetable box and your cold items was amazing too. You got your $$10.00 worth and more. Parsnips in my house are put in stews, chicken or beef. Cabbage and corned beef. Oven dinners or just mashed with butter. I like them roasted too Enjoy and keep cool 💕
It's winter here, I like to put parsnips in my sausage soup with tortellini. It gives a nice sweetness. I will have to try roasting them, I have never had them that way.
We’re expecting snow tomorrow here in Virginia. Really interesting to see what you get especially in the cold bags. And the fruit looks delicious. We have winter things here now and they are definitely not as sweet as summer fruit. Thanks for sharing and have a great week.
Hey Elizabeth😊 Thanks so much. Yes the cold bags I find usually are always great value and heaps of fun to open! That sounds cold over there. Hope you have a fantastic week too. Stay warm in that snow💕
I've never bought or cooked with parsnips, I wonder how it would be grated and put in with cabbage for coleslaw? The advent kits I think are great, chocolates are a treat anytime...those chicken patties would be good to cut into nuggets and bake with red sauce and parmesan for chicken parm...tyfs....
Hi Thelma😊 You can eat them raw, (though I always tend to cook them) so that could work. They would be interesting to try in coleslaw. Yes my kids love the chocolates because it's still a surprise each one you open! Doesn't matter if it's past Christmas. That's a great suggestion with the chicken pieces too, thanks!
A useful haul this weekm The fruit will be nice in the heat. I think the cold bag for $5 was even better. It may not be your favorite but I am pleased when you get a bag of chicken/ham/potato mash-up. I am surprised that Australia doesn't have a school lunch program but you deal with what's available. Hope you have a good week.
I love adding parsnips (or sweede or turnip or sad radishes) to soups and casseroles, adds so much depth and flavour!! Parsnips also are great roasted or in mash potatoes! For something a bit different, you can sub parsnips for carrot in carrot cake (or use half half)!! Top with a peanut butter icing, it's absolutely delicious!!! Enjoy the melons xx
Hey Ali😊 Thanks for the ideas. Parsnips are perfect in soups aren't they?! I've never considered them for adding to carrot type cakes but that could work! Thanks, those melons have long been devoured in this heat hehe! They were so good😋
@@makingendsmeet I can imagine!! It's been soooo hot here in SA, but a different heat, ours is a lot drier, us down here don't understand how you guy's up there deal with humidity lol. Anything more than 30-40% and we are down lol

Thanks Mary, that's so kind of you to say. Yes we've received some massive storms and rainfall in the last few of weeks and the humidity (and heat) has been quite extreme, but we're all okay, thanks for asking and watching😊💕
Very nice haul! I might make skewers to cook on the grill to keep heat out of the house. Potato, parsnips, onion and if you have any pepper and some cherry tomatoes from your garden. Brush with olive oil or margarine or butter and sprinkle with Italian herbs. Put foil on grill grate and watch them as they cook to make sure they don't burn.
Hey Gloria😊 Thanks so much. That's a tasty and smart idea! It's definitely a great time of year over here to cook food outside on the BBQ grill, veggie skewers sound delicious, yum!
Thanks so much my friend🥰 The garden is going okay despite the heat.
