- Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) challenges Maximus (Russell Crowe) in combat in the hopes of killing him himself, but Maximus is simply too proficient in battle and ends up killing Commodus.
Gladiator (2000) Commodus takes over power and demotes Maximus, one of the preferred generals of his father, Emperor Marcus Aurelius. As a result, Maximus is relegated to fighting till death as a gladiator.

There are exceptions - joffrey just looked like a *&%# regardless of his acting ability.
Walter White wife is among the best. Damn i hated her (character).
It's not so much the acting, more the deeds the authors and director imagine a villain to commit. Murdering the family of the protagonist or raping his love interest, for example is a common plot device to make the villain extremely dispisable and thus the hero even more tragic and loveable.
“SHEATH YOUR SWORDS!” at that moment I knew it was going to end exactly how it should
Why did he make them sheath there swords and not just give him one ?
@@arbiter9187 because they had no respect for him as king. They knew he was not fit and we’re willing to disobey his order then, they knew he would die and the rightful king would be Maximus.
What’s the point they were all snakes
Took long enough for the commander to get a backbone and defy his orders
@@KreamyButt You're right. But I also think it's because since Commodus challenged Maximus to a gladiator fight, he had to follow the same rules as all other gladiators, meaning no one could help him.
A great detail I noticed - at the start of the fight, Maximus obviously has his left arm pinned to his side where he got stabbed and it really limits his movement. When Maximus overpowers him and Commodus loses his sword, Maximus stops favouring that side and just goes all out. He knows he's bleeding out, but this is the opportunity he cannot miss.
Yeah and he stabbed him in the lung so he wouldn’t be able to catch his breath and he was slowly dying from fluid entering his lung. Commodus wanted a fight but wanted him to die after some time
That's right 👍😁❤️
Wow thats amazingly observant 😮
Adrenaline, and willpower (considering Russell Crowe's portryal of Maximus).
Yup. I noticed that too.
I love how the guards didn't help Commodus when he didn't have a weapon. That's respect for Maximus and the game. One of my favorite movies EVER.
You can even see some praetorian guards amused as Maximus punches Commodus.
All I can is that the favor/advantage slowly went towards Maximus. I highly doubt those guards would have done it if Maximus was slowly losing throughout the battle.
Quintas told them to sheath their swords in payback to Commodus. There's a deleted scene that shows why. ua-cam.com/video/T_6oSjrpxBM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Vudu
I wouldn't be surprised if the guards and their commander hated him Commodus..
The praetorian guard at one point were more powerful than the emperor himself, often being involved in assassination plots of the emperor. They all probably thought he was a spoiled little shit.
I remember seeing this in the theater years ago and everyone in the audience cheered when Maximus pushed the dagger into Commodus. Definitely Joaquin Phoenix did a great job to create one of the more hated villains in movie history.

My parents migrated here from Mexico and I remember my dad always wanting to buy the modern and best things while I was growing up. He purchased a 200 cd changer surround system and huge screen tv with wooden frame that probably weighed about 400 pounds and we would play this movie in the living room and hear the crowd roar on the speakers as the gladiators fought and it was the best! Being able to hear the sand being thrown, swords hitting each other and the crowd cheer on those speakers was amazing. My dad is now 67 years old and this is still his favorite movie.
One choice from Ridley Scott that I highly appreciate is how even though it was clear the whole crowd was rooting for Maximus and against Commodus, they all stay silent when Maximus actually wins. Idk why but that just allows me to feel and appreciate the satisfaction of the moment even more.
The audience in the coliseum was in shock. It reflects how the movie theater audience is feeling in that scene. For that moment we are a spectator in that arena.

That door was Death's Door. I'm cannot really remember the full belief, but dying was as easy as stepping through a door. Maximus Orrileas's wife and child were waiting just beyond that door. Maximus's was at the point of death, and was fighting even at that point for the justice he deserved after the Emporer had his wife and child killed.
Maximus was everything the Emporer was not. Loved by his wife and child, his men would follow him to death's door and beyond, skilled in both war and politics, and a servant of the people. He went from flailing at Maximus in desperation and denial to clinging to him in disbelief, as he realized Maximus was the last human he’d be connected with in any way, ever again.
As a kid we nicknamed Commodus “the puke” because of his behavior but as an adult we see he’s actually a victim of pride who never “measured up” and it turned him into something pitiful - only validating his insecurities.
The knife in his throat by his “own hand” is a symbol of how he killed himself trying to prove it all wrong.
You can see in his eyes by the time he realized how far it had all gone, the knife was already in his throat and he knew it was too late.

Part of the beauty of this movie, and others that have similarly great fight scenes, is the amount of blocks. Hans Zimmer's magnificent score gives me goosebumps every time as the shields rise up into the middle of the arena.
It is insane how good the score is
I hate to be that guy again (second time today) but Zimmer is a fraud who plagiarizes and steals from other composers. He runs a company, Remote Control Productions, in which he hires other composers to score his films (sometimes multiple per film) and then he takes all the credit under the "Hans Zimmer" label. This soundtrack was very likely to have been composed by additional composers.
This specific track is great but it's ironically also plagiarizing Wagner's style and the part where the shields raise is taken heavily from Henryk Górecki´s Third Symphony
I always liked the idea that as he dropped his sword, Maximus was in fact dead in that moment. It wasn't just that first time either. Near the beginning of this clip Quintas tosses Maximus's sword in the dirt and makes him fetch it (probably instructed to do so). It's like during that very fight his loyalty was won back by Maximus. Had Commodus won the fight, Quintas (and probably all of the Praetorian present that sheathed their swords as ordered) would surely be executed for betraying the emperor.

In the Director's cut there is a scene that didn't make it into the movie. Commodus has two of the Praetorians executed for not informing him that Maximus was still alive. 1. They clearly didn't understand how adrenaline can make you ignore pain. Maximum in-lore likely used it in combination with his rage to at least ignore the pain, even the slash wound he received.
2. Commodus was likely never injured before. Ever. Being slashed like that must have felt traumatizing, made him feel mortal for the first time.
3. Similar to #2, Commodus likely never "lost" a fight before. That means no one ever tried to fight him seriously, ever. This prevented him from learning basic CQC and wee the difference the moment they decide to throw hands.
The first time I ever saw this movie I was a kid, hanging out at my best friend's house. His father was blind and had a huge theater room, this was one of his favorites. I remember him lighting up with joy when this scene came on. Great movie.
When Maximus said "It's gladdinatin time" i came to tears
I never noticed that when Maximus is dying, there was a little mound of dirt "built" for him to lay his head on at the end. I read that the camera angle wouldn't capture the scene right if his head were flat on the ground. It is amazing what filmmakers do so sneakily that you don't realize it until it is pointed out. It's neat.
Quite possibly one of the most satisfying killings in cinema history.
This scene has it all, tragedy, bravery, cheating, love, fearless, honesty, code of honor, and finally there are two - performed by two great actors..
Can't believe this movie came out 212 years ago still going strong to this day. A true masterpiece
Unbelievable great acting from both !!!
This movie is in the history books forever 🙏🏼
This is way more exciting than how the real Commodus died: strangled in his bathtub by his wrestling coach.
Wait what
*goes to google*
And his death brought centuries of crisis in Roman Empire
@@fleur_de_lis1236 Rome was already doomed after Trajan died
Guess he should have had a lifeguard at his bathtub.
@@jacobnewcombe5367 False, Hadrian, Antoninius Pius & Marcus Aurelius all did just as good as Trajan as they all part of the *5 Good Emperors* Era
The fact that he thought even for a moment that he could take one of the greatest generals of his time is a testament to the arrogance of the emperor.
Well, emperor's sons in general, have tendency to be arrogant sobs, don't they? But then again, he crippled him before the duel remember? Not so arrogant after all, ha.
All that aside, main motive here is unimaginable blinding jealousy. His own father picked a total stranger, a low life, over him!! Over Crown prince!
I don't think that any of as regular Joes can even start to comprehend how humiliating and degrading for young prince that was.
3:49 At this frame you can see the dagger did not go into the neck lol.
I mean, to be fair, they would not just stick a real dagger in Joaquin Phoenix's throat and call it a day, would they?
This is a masterpiece! No ancient history movies came close to this.
Imagine calling yourself an Emperor but still cheats in a 1v1 in order to win. The funny part isn't even him cheating, but him losing even when he did xD
And the fight wasn't even close 😂 😂
Don't all rulers cheat? Constantly lying to other rulers, to the court, to the people? Stealing a little bit from everyone (or a lot, in some cases) to stay rich and powerful? Who is a bigger cheater then rulers, politicians and bosses of all kinds?
@@KameronDAaron That's the point which is also portrayed by the movie, where the grand and righteous emperor is but the image the ruler upholds; there's no heroes in the political game I guess
@@KameronDAaron the Emperor is adept but his opponent defeated three tigers and an undefeated champion simultaneously. Don't wound what you cannot kill.....in time.
@@ncrranger6327 its ironic because Commodus' father was probably the most honorable of the Roman emperors
“It’s only a flesh wound.”-Black Knight , Monty Python
"JUST a flesh wound"
@@regislourenso TY I stand corrected!
Did you know the actor who played Joffrey said he took inspiration from Phoenix as the emperor? It totally makes sense.
The death silence from the crowd in the end is what makes this scene so memorable. You can only hear the sound of the howling wind, agonising Commodus and Maximus heavy breathing.
Watched this movie when I was young, only now am I realizing why everyone hated Commodus. Challenging a mortally wounded man while you’re at full strength and health, Max dropping his sword to match Com in a fair hand to hand, only for Com to cheat once again and pull a knife. AND STILL LOSE
Credit where credits due, Commodus wasn’t totally devoid of skill.
I would say so. He poisoned maximus. It's like having a sparring Match with a sleepy or drunk partner.
He was skilled in the arts of cheating, without stabbing and poisoning Maximus, he'd be dead in 5 seconds.
He was a decent swordsman. Most likely, in spite of his training, he probably never fought a real life or death battle. Going up against someone that had fought countless times and been injured, that experience certainly makes a difference.
He was actually supposed to be very skilled with a sword, taught by the best... but the heart of a cowardly weasel and psychically not the strongest.
He was skilled. He just never fought any real battles and had no experience. If only he wasn't so cowardly and treacherous he could've redeemed himself as a tragic villain
The sound effects for the hits are hilarious. BOOM, POW, BANG!! xD
Sound engineering on this scene was fantastic. How the crowd went completely silent as he finished off Commodus... (3:35)
This has to be one of the best movies I've ever seen
Commodus ain't a half bad swordsman, but you don't become the commander of a Legion by being rubbish at hand-to-hand combat.
Commodus fought to flashy like watching a theatre peformance.
While Maximus fought practicaly, skilled and expirienced.
Commodus wanted to look good, Maximus wanted to be good.
In the end the truth won and the lie died.
Commodus had training, but they were probably all yes men who wanted to make him look good and wouldn't dare hurt him, Maximus was not only a General but the most trusted general of the previous Emperor, probably as high as you can go in the military. Decades fighting with his sword, Commodus stood no chance.
@@francargeric1 Thats the point. Commodus never faced a seasoned warrior eager to kill him. Thought he could duel the most trusted General who fought his way up from the lowest point to utmost prrstige as a lowborn foreigner who is not of Rome.
His version of war and fighting is philosophical and theatrical like people now a days who romantasize thoose matters.
While all who have been to war pray no other ever has to again.
Well at that point being commander of a legion depended on you being from the right (meaning leading rich) families. Less on being a competent soldier. The era of soldier generals and emperors was still to come and for a reason known as the crisis of the 3rd century.
Excellent summation!@@TrafalgarWaterDLaw-dl5cm
