He fell so hard on the ground, like... he fell under the weight of everything what happened to him. He did enough. He could finally rest. Damn I love this movie.
That's how somebody in armour drops. Ridley Scott is a master of this (see also The Last Duel). I love this about this movie. You feel the physical weight of everthing. Every blow, every swing with the sword, the arrows hitting the shields, bodies landing on the ground. All in great contrast with the weightlessness of the dying Maximus.
Props to Russell. That looked like a painful landing. He turned his body slightly so that his arm could cushion it and he didn't bash his skull, but that would have still resulted in a nasty bruise on the arm. You can really feel the weight of how hard he fell.
My father and I watched this when I was younger. It became a thing between us to watch this and spend time together. I don't understand how 10 people can dislike this video... One of the best movies in my opinion too, but i think one point of criticism is that this movie is historically totally incorrect. I guess some people care about that more although the movie makers never said it is historically correct.
The way she took charge is worth seeing. From a mourning lover she affirmed the position of the queen, having owned the power of the man, who was once chosen to be the emperor.
“Go to them. You’re home” and 2:35 gets me everytime This was one of the most incredible and beautiful films ever made truly a masterpiece. The soundtrack, the cinematography, story and acting was perfect
What captivates me in this scene is "Honor". A warriors honor. Someone willing to die to restore hope and faith. Sadly I see a world of leaders who represent the Emperor versus Maximus. A true leader who stands for the people. Someone who truly believes and cannot be swayed by corruption. A rare person indeed.
And not getting any better but now the people don't honor the men and women that put their lives on the line don't look at my jokes because he's children of today have no respect no honor no sense of Duty
Imagine that one guy in the audience who just entered the capital. He buys a ticket to the Colosseum expecting to see the Emperor in a fierce battle, only to have his hopes crushed. And as if that wasn't enough, the guy who just killed the Emperor begins handing out orders and no one bats an eye, he then gets carried out like a hero, while the Emperor is left behind. Marcus Aurelius--greatest Roman emperor,an amazing philosopher and a wise man.His book Meditations is one of my favorite books of all time,I can read it over and over and think about the world in a different way each time.A man who didnt run away from his duties but embraced them like a man a never complained that he had too much work.. Love this movie. Always love how Maximus is well respected that they carry him and leave the emperor there. Also how even while dying how selfless Maximus is to ask “is lucious safe” before going to his version of heaven
i'm 35 yrs old and ex-military and remember seeing this when i was a child and cried. i am now 6ft3 205lbs and i still cry like that little boy when i see this. makes me feel emotions i forgot a movie could produce. amazing.
Just imagine, it really ends like that. You walk through a gate and go "home" and maybe there are already deceased family members or friends waiting there.
This scene shows us the certainty of the future, that there is no death, and that there is always someone on the other side who loves us, and who is waiting for us to continue what we have left pending ...
@The Great Bamboozler you mean war implements?? If actual money, it will in all probability, prove quite worthless...we are programmed to value it, no?
I tear up when Maximus dies, it is that powerful to me. That Lucilla said "He was a soldier of Rome. Honor him" makes the scene so important to make the ending complete. One of the great endings in film.
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.
can't believe after 20 years, i still can't help my tears for this scene... I hope one day, movies can be made like this again, without all the political pushing agendas
this is always gunna be the most saddest ending to any movie for me, it never gets old, its so beautifully thought out, yes i am a 33 year old male and yes i cried like a little baby when i saw this the first time n i will continue to keep crying each time i watch it, the goose bumps i get when he first falls to the floor along with lisa gerrards voice it just sends me to that place i can't explain it, i just really hope that is what happens when you die, living in peace being with your loved ones for enternity, great movie.
No matter of age, geography, religion and all the world's problems, we all feel. We ALL have compassion, empathy and we all LOVE. Just wish we showed these qualities to everyone all of the time.
+Abdulaziz I did too, i'm not ashamed of it :) Great movie, the music was perfect and the end was fitting too, where they left Commodus rot in the sun.
This is 20 years old and I have seen this several times during that time as I've done just now and I'm not ashamed to admit that I still get tears in my eyes everytime I watch this scene again.
The soundtrack to this movie is heart wrenching. It was time for Maximus to join his wife and son. There was nothing left for him to do. That doesn't mean we had to like it.
I think my favorite part of this scene while he is alive is the fact that when he is emperor of the great Roman Empire for all of about 2 minutes, he doesn't ask for help or anything. He only thinks of others. This scene is really powerful. Top 3 movie. Love it.
@@hieloz Appreciate this very quick reply of mine: I'm pretty sure Maximus wouldn't become the Emperor. While Marcus (previous Caesar) wanted him to, he never wrote that request down or anything, it was just words, words that only Maximus had heard. I believe those were just the "request of a dying man". And he was also deeply honoured and respected, and had the loyalty of the senators.
Yes, Maximus was a fearless warrior and leader, but what makes him so powerful is that he actually preferred peace to violence, and men like that are more powerful than any army.
“I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien (Faramir, son of Denethor, Steward of Gondor, in THE TWO TOWERS)
As great as this scene is, its the song that makes it so impactful and brings to "trying my best not to cry" tier. If you remove the song out of this scene, the scene is not as impactful. If you remove the scene out of the song its still very impactful and gives you the chills.
A man dying after being betrayed and taking his revenge and STILL saying " THERE WAS A DREAM THAT WAS ROME .... SHALL BE REALISED" only a true man who has real respect to his dreams and duty would utter those words
One of my all time favorite movies. Even though I've seen it hundreds of times, this scene still makes me cry. He finally gets to go home to his family, he's truly free.

A saint, a philosopher, a warrior & the last true Emperor of Rome, Marcus Aurelius. Richard Harris played him so well.
Iulius Ceasar and Traian are bigest
God dammit who left these cut onions next to me?
fucking ninjas...
dunno man, they did the same shit to me..
Every time she says "he was a soldier of Rome " the way she speaks it gives me goose bumps...best movie ever made
Love this movie. Always love how Maximus is well respected that they carry him and leave the emperor there. Also how even while dying how selfless Maximus is to ask “is lucious safe” before going to his version of heaven
No, he said "Lucious is safe".
@@GeckoForReal exactly, now that Commodus was dead. 👍
One the most beauty death scenes in history of cinema!! 😢😢😭😭
The best movie I have seen and will ever see. I watched this with my parents when it came out 20 years ago.
من أجمل الافلام على مر التاريخ روووووعة
If the ending of this movie doesn't move you, you have issues. Gets me every freaking time.
So true.
The soundtrack is incredible that could make you to feel every moment spent with loved ones was worthwhile in the end..
i'm 35 yrs old and ex-military and remember seeing this when i was a child and cried. i am now 6ft3 205lbs and i still cry like that little boy when i see this. makes me feel emotions i forgot a movie could produce. amazing.
This film will always be regarded in my mind as a timeless masterpiece.
Just imagine, it really ends like that. You walk through a gate and go "home" and maybe there are already deceased family members or friends waiting there.
That would be a nice way to depart from this earth-realm to that kind of Place.
Live the life to the fullest - and depart with no regrets.
This scene shows us the certainty of the future, that there is no death, and that there is always someone on the other side who loves us, and who is waiting for us to continue what we have left pending ...
"Is Rome worth one good man's life, we believe it once, make us believe it again "one of my favourite quote from my favourite movie ever...
This movie thought me frm young what a TRUE man/ warrior is about! Shout out to ALL my Gladiators striving evryday✊🏾.
3:51 I love how everyone in the stadium stands unanimously as they carry Maximus away. *I'm not crying I just have some onion in my eye*
Should the aliens ever come to Earth and ask to understand humanity, show them this movie.
no.... show them "Earth Girls are Easy".
Show them hentai.
humans in general can never live up these expectations
@@beastinsight9825 show them...the money
@The Great Bamboozler you mean war implements?? If actual money, it will in all probability, prove quite worthless...we are programmed to value it, no?
Russell Crowe is such an amazing actor
Including in Max Payne movie?I liked this movie don't understand the hate!
American gangster!!!
This movie is so special. The substance is so universal. We all want to go back home. Every single person.
I tear up when Maximus dies, it is that powerful to me. That Lucilla said "He was a soldier of Rome. Honor him" makes the scene so important to make the ending complete. One of the great endings in film.
After Commodus’ death, it was decreed that all toilets in Rome would be referred to as “commodes”...😛
When the camera cuts to maximus face before he falls, the music the expression oh man it’s amazing
Brave heart and gladiator are identical in history . 1000 years apart . Both will always be remembered.... And never forgotten.....📜🙏🏴🇧🇬....
this is always gunna be the most saddest ending to any movie for me, it never gets old, its so beautifully thought out, yes i am a 33 year old male and yes i cried like a little baby when i saw this the first time n i will continue to keep crying each time i watch it, the goose bumps i get when he first falls to the floor along with lisa gerrards voice it just sends me to that place i can't explain it, i just really hope that is what happens when you die, living in peace being with your loved ones for enternity, great movie.
"Hey, I'm dead over here! Somebody get me to my funeral?" - Commodus
"Did you guys hear something?" - Quintus
"Even the buzzard's gotta eat.... same as the coyote and the worm." Josey Wales :)
A movie, a class of its own. The music and the ending that makes so many cried, including me.
No matter of age, geography, religion and all the world's problems, we all feel. We ALL have compassion, empathy and we all LOVE. Just wish we showed these qualities to everyone all of the time.
Elmo. " We are all one "
is what you truly meant
24 Yes, we all come frm Star dust matters.
Elmo. It’s hard to show love to everyone, especially your enemies, like comudas he needed to go away, a very evil man.
I wish I could have seen him leading his army back to Rome like the original plan. Would have loved to see the soldiers' reactions to him being alive.
Amazing,,just amazing, especially when Connie Nielsen speaks those final dialogues..❤
who didn't cry at this scene, ain't a man
Best movie .. I cry in the end
+Abdulaziz I do too, like a small child.
Jimmy Pop t.v.
xD
Right when his body is taken away...
+Abdulaziz I did too, i'm not ashamed of it :) Great movie, the music was perfect and the end was fitting too, where they left Commodus rot in the sun.
+Abdulaziz
me too
This is 20 years old and I have seen this several times during that time as I've done just now and I'm not ashamed to admit that I still get tears in my eyes everytime I watch this scene again.
Very emotional scene and then all of the sudden you hear a dumb music and you remember you live in a fucked up world and advertismemts are what's up
+George Jackson so much YES!
+home sanitarium You absolutely should help people! Good luck.
The soundtrack to this movie is heart wrenching. It was time for Maximus to join his wife and son. There was nothing left for him to do. That doesn't mean we had to like it.
This is the most emotionel moment of this awesome movie with awesome music.I cann’t keep it dry.
I think my favorite part of this scene while he is alive is the fact that when he is emperor of the great Roman Empire for all of about 2 minutes, he doesn't ask for help or anything. He only thinks of others. This scene is really powerful. Top 3 movie. Love it.
Did they ever really mention though that if he killed commodus he would become Emperor?
@@hieloz Appreciate this very quick reply of mine:
I'm pretty sure Maximus wouldn't become the Emperor. While Marcus (previous Caesar) wanted him to, he never wrote that request down or anything, it was just words, words that only Maximus had heard.
I believe those were just the "request of a dying man". And he was also deeply honoured and respected, and had the loyalty of the senators.
People say this is a fighting film with action, but it's more than this...
Just saw this in the theatre, those final 10 mins still hit so hard, made me cry even though I've seen it many times before. Legendary movie
Yes, Maximus was a fearless warrior and leader, but what makes him so powerful is that he actually preferred peace to violence, and men like that are more powerful than any army.
“I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien (Faramir, son of Denethor, Steward of Gondor, in THE TWO TOWERS)
The sound track during her speech still gets me every time I watch it ❤😭
Epilog:
Commodus gets up and says "well, that wound wasn't fatal after all, I'm still Emperor!"
Also Commodus: *Get strangled in his bathtub by his coach after that*
As great as this scene is, its the song that makes it so impactful and brings to "trying my best not to cry" tier. If you remove the song out of this scene, the scene is not as impactful. If you remove the scene out of the song its still very impactful and gives you the chills.
Who came here after gladiator 2??? ✋✋✋
Me😢
A man dying after being betrayed and taking his revenge and STILL saying " THERE WAS A DREAM THAT WAS ROME .... SHALL BE REALISED" only a true man who has real respect to his dreams and duty would utter those words
I cannot think of a single actor nowadays who would be as badass as Crowe to interpret this character.
Would have been an interesting movie if Adam Sandler had played Maximus instead
This and the end of "End of Days" always breaks me when he smiles when he sees his dead family while he is dying.
One of my all time favorite movies. Even though I've seen it hundreds of times, this scene still makes me cry. He finally gets to go home to his family, he's truly free.
One day I will see my father again.i miss him so much.
joseph james today nor tomorrow is your time, live the life your father couldn’t have that’ll be enough for him
Me too man, me too. And my cousin too
I miss my father too
But not yet, not yet.
Nubian guys words should be included there.
Me too
