It is certainly not one of the INSANELY popular watches like the Submariners or Daytonas that everyone gravitates toward. But there are two other things to consider: 1) an awful lot of watch collecting “snobs” do have an open disdain for Rolex (not an older or established Swiss house but a “British” brand born in 1905); and 2) Adrian recently sold his high-demand No-Date Sub, opting instead for a not-so “mainstream” Tudor Black Bay (which some might argue is the poor man’s Sub) on the basis of build quality, style and other principles.

I'm not a fan of Hublot either, but to say it's hated because of being shown off or overpriced is a bit hypocritical considering plenty of people buy Rolex and AP Royal Oaks to flex. AP charging $20k for a stainless steel watch with a three hand movement and date is moronic too, but people happily pay through the noise for the status. Rolex charges $8100 for a stainless steel Submariner with a basic three hand movement and an ugly undecorated movement, but no one bats an eye. They also charge an extra grand for just adding a date to your Submariner which is incredibly moronic. Luxury watches in general are overpriced and to hate on another brand doing it's own thing is petty and immature. Watch snobs are distasteful. Just let other people enough what they want.

20 for the AP and 28K for the Nautilus are totally moronoic. Most of the cost in any swiss product comes from the labor a skilled worker here gets around 6000 to 7000 CHF a month a bit over $7200 but that still doesn't make any sense for the Nautilus that isn't really better finished to cost 8k more. Rolex does a phenomenal job decorating and adjusting their movements and put huge amounts of money into research and development of their in house made technology that powers and makes these movements accurate and robust. All the marketing aside, that makes them less pretentious to me. People paying 10,000 for a used 5,000 watch because of fake scarcity or swishing their wrists around begging people to enquire so they remark how it was worth the wait and effort shouldn't really critique people who walk around with a hublot with the price tag still on it. Richard Mille is a marketing genius though. Makes essentially plastic watches with less waterproofing and strength, let alone accuracy, than most 50 dollar seikos. Puts anywhere from 250k-1million price tag on them, gives some away to some celebs, dumb rappers and basketball players to market for him...and boom, you have a "luxury" brand. Crap quality at high end price, marketed to dumb people. Its like the modern Louis Vuitton bag. Lesser quality than in their past. Cheap material thats practically canvas with spray rubber, marketed as "leather", that practically falls apart if you set it on floor, in the sun, or get it wet. But they switched from actual quality, to marketing just the old LV name to the rapper community. People who think "expensive" is quality and just want to post pictures on their instagram with something "expensive" to shine. .

But they at least, make an effort to create some unique looking movements and they are supposedly very "innovative" in regards to their shock resistance. @Clay1404 well if you're playing tennis why are you even wearing a watch? It doesn't really serve any practical purpose other than potentially slow you down or annoy you. You won't need a chronograph or a time keeping device on a tennis track.
They don't look look at all. They look like toys. The movements are nice, I appreciate those. The watch cases are very large bulky and look like they're props from the fantastic 4.

    • @fVNzO
      @fVNzO 2 роки тому +8

@Clay1404 Yes the skeleton movements are very nice. I just feel like, when you make retail watches in the range of 80-500K (i believe they are), having their primary benefit be something that really doesn't make much sense anyway, to actually use the watch while doing sports - it's a bit dumb. Imagine wearing your 200K watch playing football or tennis. It doesn't make any sense. It would just get in your way, let alone be subject to undue wear with an item that's more expensive than most apartments. It quite literally is *the most* useless piece of technology in watchmaking.
That's not to say that an AP or Patek or rolex isn't (because of their pricing in particular) but they're a far cry from the likes of RM and actually do serve the function of being discreet time keeping devices - that also happen to, in pateks case be better finished.
All mechanical watches are essentially useless from a practical standpoint, but RM are just *the most* useless ones. Is my opinion.
For my money, i would enjoy a fine nomos watch, a BB58 or a GS. All very competitively priced and all excessively accurate and well put together. They provide plenty satisfaction in mechanical curiosity and material finishing, all at 5% the price of an RM.
And that's not to discredit your point, off course it's nice to be light and wearable. That's my number one focus. But plenty of 2-5K watches are impressively thin and light.

I went by the saying, that your first big watch purchase should be something "you" like, not an investment, just a watch you love and enjoy. And it was and still is big time. I love it and I'm glad I got it.
I understand the criticisms of Hublot but I adore the design, personally, and luckily paid cash so I got a very decent chunk off the sticker price anyway (and no tax ... ;) )
A note on your criticisms of the bolts not lining up though... I could be wrong, but I remember reading on forums that they are not allowed to line the bolts up like an Audemars because Audemars had trademarked that look against Hublot, as they were first to the design idea. So instead, Hublot have to have sporadic bolt angles. Also worth mentioning, I believe the Audy doesn't actually have screws, they are just nuts stuck into place and aren't actually holding the case together. Whereas Hublot actually uses Screws holding the bezel to the case. I believe that's correct but don't quote me on it.
Either way, great video mate, really enjoyed it. It's good to see the criticisms, but hey I still love mine just the same. You earned a sub!

And what about the Royal Oak? It's the same argument people use to slag TAG Heuer, yes there are watches just as good for half the price, but they don't have the 'brand value', that costs a lot of money to achieve - sponsoring F1 teams, football clubs and leagues... hence 'watch enthusiasts' feel these brands are overpriced and look down on them, whilst ignoring other overpriced brands (Panerai for example).

Imagine thinking that every movement from ETA is cheap. Just because they’re not in-house doesn’t mean they are cheap. If you can tell me the difference between putting an ETA movement in a Hublot and Rolex having incorporated an entire production site under company ownership to do the exact same thing except claiming now that it’s “in-house”, I’ll give you a point.
You tend to forget that Rolex still mass produces certain watch models like the date-just and the submariner(date).
Almost everything Rolex claims to be the first, have innovated or achieved were already done by previous watchmakers by sometimes even preceding decades. Or that there is always a caveat.
Perfect example is Rolex their claim of the Oyster being the first waterproof wristwatch however that’s bs. The first waterproof wrist watch was the Tavannes submarine wristwatch.

So this is an interesting one. I'll say up front Hublot are not my thing....at all. I also hate how they've been appropriated by footballers (building on your comment of them being for non watch people). However I'll say this. I'm a design director and I know how hard it is to do your own thing. They've managed to do it, love or hate it. The people who like them, really Mean it, and enjoy them. They're pretty well put together, and to be honest if we're talking prices...look at Rolex. Most of the watches you're comparing these with are VERY traditional. These are created to be the antidote to those. Most of the industry is backward looking, heritage based (which I like, but it is). Those who break out, Hublot, Richard Mille, get labeled as brash and vulgar. But they are original. I will never wear or buy a Hublot, but they probably deserve better than they get.

@@Ezekielchar Exactly. Hublot identified a market. People who want a status symbol on their wrist. 'Wrist Candy'. Something different, a conversation starter. A bit 'Rude' and outrageous. If you ask any guy on 'Love Island' what watch they'd aspire to buy, Hublot would be on that list....or Rolex. Which is why a lot of people hate Rolex (not me I like it just fine but you get what I mean). Watch 'Match Of The Day' (UK Football programme). Most of the managers are wearing them on the touchline, and Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer (the presenters) both wear them too. They've really nailed their demographic....and they sell watches when many other brands are dying. I love watches...but to a certain extent anything above a price point is luxury for lurxurys sake.
