I like to imagine next door is filming a drill review video which they have to interrupt with "sorry, our neighbours are board game critics" whenever Tom or Quinn makes a strange noise
"Welcome to Chuck Up and Bit Down!"
My imagination is stupid because in my head the drill reviewing neighbours are just Tom, Matt and Quins wearing fake moustaches.
@@stumbling Completely fantastic puns, 10/10
"Number Siiiiiiiii-aaaAAAAGGGGH"
Revenge is a number served cold
Someone should make an asymmetrical board game where one player is managing a train line for a tyrannical despotic government, constantly fulfilling increasingly demanding orders from the dictator or risk losing their job while the other player runs a rebellion that is constantly sabotaging the railway at every opportunity. One person is trying to play a euro game while the other is playing a war game.
You mean like the EU?
Isn't that basically root?
Yes please
@@JAGFT in root, everyone is playing a war game with some limited eurogame-y elements
WHAAAAT
Kickstart it. NOW.
I've heard many foreigners butcher the pronunciation of Ljubljana (our capitol city), but this one is by far the best and the most entertaining.
The capital! Oh god, if I'd known that I'd have tried a BIT harder
le jibble janna
I had to check twice because I heard him say "little vag*na"
Is it more like "Lyooblyana"?
As I've said many times to explainmy name, the j is like an i. Still I also thought this was hilarious, and immediately had to wonder if I should get Imperial Steam simply because my father's birthplace is on the board!
The matching shirts are giving strong "dad teaching his large son board games" vibes.
i get more of a "two large sons run rampant" vibe and i love it
Tom sense of humor + Quinn's sense of humor = greater of the sum of their parts. this one was an A+ melding of two very funny people
You're absolutely right. It's like, they have such intentionally awkward timing that the jokes hit at a different beat then you expect, but also different beats then each other, so once a person gets the groove of one of them, the other one shakes the formula. It's very good.
It has a more improvisational feel, a bit like interdimensional cable.
You're right. But I find the way they're dressed the same upsetting.
This was honestly high quality comedy. I love every video with Quinns or with Tom. To get them both in one video... perfect.
If a person got to play board games with Quinn and Tom, they would have lived a good life.
"What made you think you'd be good at this job?"
"...I just thought it would be really easy."
Next expansion of Air, Land, and Sea -> Trains, Trains, and Civic Infrastructure!
I love that Tom and Matt's reviews still have an air of professionalism, but the minute Tom and Quinns get in a room all you get is unhinged chaos. Amazing video.
I dunno... I get a WE'RE BEING CRAZY vibe from Matt and Tom's reviews. I like the zany, but Quinns and Tom are just naturally... odd. It's like watching Blazing Saddles vs. Young Frankenstein. Same guys, COMPLETELY different feel.
I believe Quinns owns the company - so he's kind of their boss. It's easier to go off the rails with your boss' permission than on your own.
This video felt a lot more candid then some of your other ones. The bloopers and outtakes throughout the video really made me feel like you were in my kitchen next to me explaining these games. Air land sea is a banger, so picking up the sequel is such an easy buy for me. Good stuff.
NORMAL
It's the first video of them in years I could watch without quitting a quarter way or halfway through.
After a very long time they didn't bother with who's toes they were stepping on and just... did their thing.
Even the Fitzcarraldo comparison caught me offguard, because with the direction they were headed in the past few years, I didn't expect them to include scenes from a movie so heavily criticised for how the indigenous people were treated (or in some cases not treated, one person literally cut off their leg with a chainsaw after being bitten by a poisonous snake) on set. But instead, they focused on the bigger point of the comparison: the hustle.
It felt like the very early days with Quinns & Paul, using actual nazi propaganda footage just to set the theme for their Memoir 44 review and by that, showing us how it FELT to play the game, emphasizing its strengths.
Heck, for the longest time I walked away with not only one, but two recommendations. Akropolis as something my parents might like, and maybe The Guild of Merchant Explorers for myself.
More of this, please, lads, and I might return as a subscriber.
Wormholes looks really nice. I could use a lightweight space themed game in my collection so i can get my fix without having to break out the 4x games.
That's my thinking too. Wormholes looks right up my alley.
there was something very contagious about Tom's uncontrolled laugh at Quinns' expense
This was my favourite video from SU&SD in some time: lighthearted, fun, sharing lots of games I hadn't heard of, and with just the right amount of corpsing left in the edit (which almost always gets me laughing out loud as well.)
A charming review. Edit: Tom's shrill "You're calling it a THRILL???" gives me life.
This one has SUCH fun and chaotic energy, I love this
I've discovered this channel three months ago and I've went through nearly half of all reviews. Sometimes I agree and sometimes I don't. Sometimes I watch the reviews of games I just would never play myself. And I absolutely love and adore the passion and humor of the crew. Please continue doing what you do. THANK YOU!
This whole thing was so damn enjoyable to watch, it felt more like you are new to board games and two of your friends are tying to tell you about them.
In the US, on any given day, there are probably more people playing train games than riding trains.
Not used to Tom being the voice of reason in collab videos, but I'm loving this new direction SU&SD is barreling towards with the brakes out and the tracks ending and oh God, we've gone off the rails. (That's a train pun just for Quinns since he loves trains so much.)
Quinns trying to swallow a standard reference pear leaves me wondering how one is supposed to eat a pair in the first place. If quinns is eating it from the bottom, but backwards. Does that mean I'm supposed to start with the stem?
Truly SUSD has so much to teach us. Quickly, support them on their website and patreon! What knowledge may be lost if we don't?
Thanks for a great video as always: one thing on Imperial Steam: you don't get negative points if nobody builds a route to Triest. In that case, your contract are worth 0. You DO get negative points if someone DOES connect to Triest and you haven't completed the obligations of your contracts. Makes a huge difference in my opinion and makes for an even better game! (You can play off of people's too optimistic acquisition of contracts and tank them by rushing to Triest). By the way: viaduct, not aquaduct.
The best expression of utter disintrest in this video is Tom scrolling through his phone while Quinns is just going on and on about Imperial Steam :p
Mirrors are tricky 😆
Took a sec but I found it lol
And the script precariously balanced on the edge of the bin
So good to be seeing multiple members of the team in video reviews again these days.
17:21 - the game is so engaging, Tom's barely even totally absorbed with his phone in the background through the mirror. Fair though, more than enough economical train games doing the rounds :)
You have given me hours of entertainment and I typically buy one board game a year. Thanks to your reviews, I don't have to spend tons of money seeing if I like the game past the box art. Those savings are passed on to you! Love your work and your dedication to staying independent. I don't typically leave UA-cam comments, but that's how great you guys are. Hope you get all the donations you deserve. NOW KISS ALREADY
I never thought, as I sat here eating cream crackers with hot sauce, to see quinns pour hot sauce on a cream cracker. This is just what we eat in britain now.
Omg what a treat to see Tom and Quinns energy in the same frame! More please. Love to all of you and thank you for bringing so much joy!
I had to get the heimlich maneuver for the first time ever watching this by choking on a halls when Quinn gags on the cracker. Like my wife literally saved my life, full on crying afraid for my life panic. Almost made it through covid and could have been undone at the end by a goddamn boardgame reviewer eating a cracker poorly.
I feel for you. I am SO glad I wasn't eating during this video. But many a cough occurred because of drinking water at the wrong time.
I dont know if its the format of reviewing multiple games in one video but I love the humor and style of this review. This is now my second favorite video, after the oink games one. More of this please!
the team handled doing solo vids during isolation really well, i thought, but the "learning how to be in a room with another person again" vibe of this one with the off-hand and off-script remarks was a blast
So exciting to see Akropolis included here! Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent use of dramatic irony to have Tom complaining about Burn Cycle being unnecessarily waterproof and then two weeks later have one of his boardgames waterboarded.
My top 5 favorite bits:
1. Tom's description of the Akropolis box artwork
2. Quinns' overacting during the Akropolis teach
3. I assume Tom hid the copy of Lizard Wizard behind the plant just to finally get it out of his house?
4. Quinns seeming to actually become really interested in Space Station Phoenix in real time
5. Those shirts tho 🔥
Cannot agree more with the first pick. By now, I’ve played Imperial Steam so many times, and it introduced me to Alexander Huemer’s style. Very tight and precise decision making.
I’ve also played the previous game of Huemer “Lignum 2nd Edition”, which is less elegant but still painfully fun, requiring almost the same levels of precise and cautious planning.
the whoosh sound effect for Air, Land, and Sea intro startled me enough that i actually ducked down in my chair
I like how when he smiles he turns up the dryer
i am rapidly acquiring a dangerous taste for the quinns-and-tom special brand of combo humor - dangerous because there's only so many videos that have it! it's SO GOOD. thank you so much for another lovely video, im gonna haveta check these games out!
Had to stop the video to laugh at Quinns eating the pear. Lovely.
So, if I understand him, Quinn's biggest problem with Air, Land & Sea: Spies, Lies & Supplies is that you can't tell the spies just by looking at them? Kind of the point of spies.
It is a good point. I respect Magic cards for their art, but the only practical purpose it holds is both shorthanding known cards and quickly informing the effects of unknown cards, so that one is never totally in the dark. Playing with inappropriate art actually makes my decisions harder because I have to stop and double check each card.
LIZARD WIZARD HIDING IN THE BACKGROUIND! This is a delicious treat for the podcast listeners.
the day that my local shop started stocking beef samosas in the fridge my life changed lol
I've very much missed SU&SD feeling like it was just a couple o' guys hangin' out that happened to decide to record a review. I didn't ever realize what was missing until this video showed it to me.
Played 3 of these tonight. The winner? VILLAGE RAILS. A lot of crunchy game in that dinky box!
Great. Almost died from that pear moment...
17:22 Tom scrolling on his phone in the background represents my interest in dry euro games lol
This was a journey of a video, and I loved every minute of it. Thank you guys for continuing to be so entertaining and informative!
Howling at the reveal of the back of the Akropolis box. Feels like the board game equivalent of increasing the font size to make up for being under the word count.
Or: a visual review of all the games we've heard about, but not seen, on the podcast.
The delivery on this review was rock solid. Best yet, there was enough humor along the way to keep it spicy without getting in the way of the review.
The matching shirts... that is all I needed.
I'm not really siked for any of these games but the chemistry you two have is so entertaining it kept me watching until the end! A great video from start to finish!
Oh Excited to hear about these! I appreciate the new discoveries for my impulse purchases
Absolute chaotic energy. Loved it. It was cool seeing some of the stuff from the podcast feature here
tom losing it at 10:09 is my fave piece of footage introducing a boardgame ever
I love how in this review, at 7:44, Quinns tries to communicate with the probe from Startrek IV: The Voyage Home...
I love you guys. I've been following Quinns for ages, and Tom is super-delightful, and wonderfully Obi Wan Kenobi-esque, which I adore. Thanks!
"The same seagull that's on the front of the box!" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I like that we could tell the two of you were having fun.
This is my favorite episode of SU&SD, this was great
Finally got my copy of IS to the table with a friend and was more pleasantly surprised than I expected. Lots of fiddly bits and pieces but not as overly long as I thought it might be and very scrunchy decision making.
This was awesome
Enjoyed it a lot :)
Liked the pace of the video, the jokes, the amount of games covered but still enough info about each, keeping the video around the 20min mark.
Good job :)
Absolutely loved this format. In particular Tom trying to sell a game to the audience while Quinn live reacts in the background. Now, off to buy at least 2 of these games.
The best thing about this video? The Lizard Wizard box that was probably dropped at Quinns place without him knowing. Or maybe he knew, it's chaos in this video, absolutely love it.
This has to be your funniest video in a while (which is saying something; you lot set a very high watermark!) I love the energy of two people mercilessly roasting games that they have to begrudgingly admit are really good.
I love that lizard wizard made its appearance in this video, haunting Quinn’s. 10/10 for the long running joke.
Fantastic chemistry as always. Love a silly multi-review.
The hidden lizard wizard now living in Quinns house made my day! Great content guys!
This is such a good video. Best reviews of the year so far, in a year worth of absolute /bangers/.
Man, what a treat of a video. Absolutely dynamite energy.
Also, I never thought my flavor-obsessed self could get so interested in "19th Century European Rail/Infrastructure Game #4326," but by the end of your Imperial Steam section I just might have to pop over to my shop & see if they have a copy.
Utter brilliance! Loving the style and on-point shirt action too :)
For the drilling I suggest you ask your neighbor to maybe drill on a mat or perhaps some kind of insulation under the desk if they are drilling using a table /bench. Another thing you can do is add insulation between you and the neighboring unit, by building out either permanent or a more portable sort of ‘fake wall’. Drills aren’t subwoofers so it should it should be too hard to reduce their noise. The lower the frequency the harder it is to prevent leaking (lower frequency = longer wavelength = more thickness needed to reduce it). Hope that helps!
"satisfying drunken impulse purchase" is the category of board game recommendation I never knew I needed until this video. thanks!
When I am depressed I watch one of your videos. Just 😂! Thank you! Keep it up!
As soon as I finished this one, I just hit replay. Thank you for making this :D
Hilarious and informative in equal measure - you guys are really great!
I love that the famous "But wait..." From Quinn's review of Mind Mgmt has influenced Tom's reviews... The boy is growing strong 😍😍
My favourite duo! Always an instant click when Tom and Quinn are on the thumbnail
What is better than Quinns? What is better than Tom? Quinns and Tom in the same video! This was a joy to watch!
Your guys’ videos crack me up! Thanks for the recs!
The podcast had me interested in Wormhole, and now I'm intrigued. Also, thanks for toning down your hawaiian shirts before starting filming
I love the unfettered chaos in this video.
The Lizard Wizard hiding in the plant! So good
Thank you for the video that was great. I lovr these kind of videos where one can learn a bit about several games.
I am not sure if i want one of the games but i am glad i heard about them.
Even though I'm not too interested in these games, I can't thank you enough for the laughs you gave me this fine morning. I look forward to having stable income so I can say last support you on Patreon. Keep making this fantastic content!
This made me laugh so hard at the end. Excellent job as always!
I live in Trieste. Happy that someone talk about us ❤️
I am very glad we are getting normal videos like this again.
Thank you for the video! I like the new SU&SD uniform.
I love Tom and Quinns in a video together , they work real well :) good job guys you played well today
I was considering a purchase of Imperial Steam, and this review definitely made up my mind. No thanks - at least, for now!
It would be too difficult to get people around the table for a game as dry - and complicated - as this. I’d REALLY have to find the right game group, and right now that would be like pulling a rabbit out of my hat.
Cheers on the great review, though!
Yep. That’s unfortunately an important consideration for most of us. We have to convince people to actually play it.
*wants to pay attention but can’t stop staring at Quinn’s Outer Wilds tat*
I loved the ending. Great video as always guys. Imperial steam sounds interesting.
Perfect comedy timings. You guys achieved perfection.
As previously promised the normalcy of this video has been increased by %15
I almost died at the pear bit
Watching this video is the most fun I have ever had being this bored.
I cannot believe how normal this video is, wonderful!
Akropolis reminds me of Cuzco as it also uses 3-hex tiles that can stack, but it has a shared board and no market mechanic.
This review brought me literally incalculable joy. Keep it up you magnificent bastards.
Also "Spies, Lies, and Supplies" is a genius title how DARE
This video had me chuckling at several moments. Tom's hair tuft is a little distracting, but it doesn't detract from is charm. I look forward to playing the Seagull game one day.
