Well, yes 1 store is closing bc of the homeless in that area (hey, elected city officials what are doing to help your constituates?) and blatant shoplifting. Although, homelessness is a national crisis, those responsible are the states Governor, the county Mayor & county office representatives and the city respresentive and city office officials and lawmakers within those branches. Sorry, I digress point being Big Lots (way too much coffee).
Lots President and CEO Bruce Thorn said the Citrus Heights location is closing due to homeless & shoplifting. An employee said some people dial-up a cart and walk out and there's nothing they can do. She added that there's a "loophole" in the law that says anything below $950 in theft is only a misdemeanor (as opposed to a felony). Tough neighborhood.
They have over 1,400 stores in 47 states, CA has the most with 149 stores followed by TX 115, FL 106, OH 101. In January, Big Lots announced plans to open appx 500 new stores in 2022 alone, had plans to open 50 stores, with 80 or more opening per year after that. Prior to that announcement, Big Lots had had a "flat store count" for a decade, noting that they were introducing a "store invention program" to reduce # of closures. However, the situation has changed and a # of closing stores is picking up. Dec 1st earnings call from 3rd fiscal quarter of 2022 inflation impacting customers' discretionary spending- particularly on big-ticket items-thus affecting the retailers performance in this quarter. Net sales down 9%, loss of 87 million, compared with just $4 million during same quarter last year. Revenue losses is driving store closures.
