Zan Gha it's because the lyrics. It's about a man (originally a man) who goes to church to pray because he'll commit suicide while he invites his lover (who cheated on him and is the reason why the man will commit suicide) to his funeral 'cause he loves her so much. Even in the last sentence he says: "Ne félj a szememtől, holtan is áldalak" which translates into "Don't be afraid of my eyes even in my death I praise you". People realised that they lost their pride or haven't even achieved one, that's why they commited suicide. It's II. WW version is even more suicidal and sad :(
It's from the movie "Gloomy Sunday" which you can watch on youtube (in 2 parts) in german with english subtitles when you turn the captions on. It's a very good movie by the way.
In Poland we also have suicide song, and it also contains Sunday in the title. It is "Ta ostatnia niedziela" - ang. "That last Sunday". Before WWII men were asking orchestra to play this song, buying glass of vodka and then shooting themselves in head.

I know a lot of Hungarian people, some of my friends are Hungarian, too! Despite I've heard it from my date of birth, I love it! Ay, good movie. The ending scene was just what needed to happen. I love how Marozsán Erika sings Gloomy Sunday. It's so beautiful and so much more dark in Hungarian than English can put it in.
This song is beautiful..and it was not written to emos..Emo is only a ,,trendy style",but this song is full of real pain and sorrow..and it is more than beautiful, because it contains real emotions, even thought Gloomy Sunday is not fashionable nowadays,I love this song very much:)

Well, I've learned how to sing it. I don't know the lyrics by heart, but I can pronounce them all correctly. Hungarian is difficult for English-speakers to pronounce.
Többször láttam ezt a filmet .... A dalt is jól ismerem. A film , próbálja megfejteni Seres Rezső szomorú dalának titkát. .....
Such a beautiful haunting scene from an amazing movie. The Hungarian cast (and German dub over ) were both excellent! I hope someday this movie can be remade with an english cast.

Sunday is gloomy,
My hours are slumberless
Dearest the shadows
I live with are numberless
Little white flowers
Will never awaken you
Not where the black coach of
Sorrow has taken you
Angels have no thought
Of ever returning you
Would they be angry
If I thought of joining you?
Gloomy Sunday
Gloomy is Sunday,
With shadows I spend it all
My heart and I
Have decided to end it all
Soon there'll be candles
And prayers that are said I know
Let them not weep
Let them know that I'm glad to go
Death is no dream
For in death I'm caressin' you
With the last breath of my soul
I'll be blessin' you
Gloomy Sunday
Dreaming, I was only dreaming
I wake and I find you asleep
In the deep of my heart, dear
Darling I hope
That my dream never haunted you
My heart is tellin' you
How much I wanted you

Sadly one Sunday, I waited and waited
With flowers
in my arms, for the grief I'd created
I waited 'til dreams like my heart were all broken
The flowers were all dead and the words were unspoken
The grief that I knew was beyond all consoling
The beat of my heart was a bell that was tolling
Saddest of Sundays
Then came the Sunday when you came to find me
They brought me to church and I left you behind me
My eyes would not see what I wanted to love me
The earth and the flowers of the lover above me*
The bell tolled for me and the wind whispered 'never'
But you I have loved and I bless you forever
Last of all Sundays

Words are sad but absolutely beautiful. They pluck at the heart like violin strings. And, yes she is beautiful.
Definitely, songs in their original languages are better because their transmit the real spirit that the authors want to tell us.

Gloomy Sunday.
Last Sunday, my love please come along,
There will even be priest, coffin, catafalque, hearse-cloth.
Even then flowers will be awaiting you, flowers and coffin.
Under blossoming trees my journey shall be the last.
My eyes will be open, so that I can see you one more time,
Don't be afraid of my eyes as I'm blessing you even in my death,
Last Sunday.
Yes, they say it's the hardest European language to learn. Bravo and congratulations on being able to speak this beautiful language, even if it isn't at fluency level. Progress is progress, and you deserve a pat on the back for being able to speak any foreign language =) I'm jealous!
