    The translation is the following:
    Gloomy Sunday with hundred flowers,
I was waiting for you with church prayer,
on a dream chasing Sunday morning,
without you, my sorrows chariot has returned
    -Play for me
Sunday is always gloomy since then,
just tear is my beverage, sorrow's my bread,
    Gloomy Sunday
Last Sunday please come my dear,
There'll be priest, coffin, bier, hearsecloth,
Even then, flower will await, flower and coffin
under floral trees, my journey, the last
My eyes will be open to see you once more
Don't be afraid of my eyes, I'll bless you in death as well
    Last Sunday

      István Balázs
      Sunday is gloomy,
      My hours are slumberless
      Dearest the shadows
      I live with are numberless
      Little white flowers
      Will never awaken you
Not where the black coach of
      Sorrow has taken you
      Angels have no thought
      Of ever returning you
      Would they be angry
If I thought of joining you?
      Gloomy Sunday
      Gloomy is Sunday,
With shadows I spend it all
      My heart and I
Have decided to end it all
      Soon there'll be candles
And prayers that are said I know
      Let them not weep
Let them know that I'm glad to go
      Death is no dream
For in death I'm caressin' you
With the last breath of my soul
      I'll be blessin' you
      Gloomy Sunday
      Dreaming, I was only dreaming
I wake and I find you asleep
In the deep of my heart, dear
      Darling I hope
That my dream never haunted you
      My heart is tellin' you
      How much I wanted you

    • @FrancescaS.
      @FrancescaS. 10 років тому +4

Zan Gha it's because the lyrics. It's about a man (originally a man) who goes to church to pray because he'll commit suicide while he invites his lover (who cheated on him and is the reason why the man will commit suicide) to his funeral 'cause he loves her so much. Even in the last sentence he says: "Ne félj a szememtől, holtan is áldalak" which translates into "Don't be afraid of my eyes even in my death I praise you". People realised that they lost their pride or haven't even achieved one, that's why they commited suicide. It's II. WW version is even more suicidal and sad :(

In Poland we also have suicide song, and it also contains Sunday in the title. It is "Ta ostatnia niedziela" - ang. "That last Sunday". Before WWII men were asking orchestra to play this song, buying glass of vodka and then shooting themselves in head.

    The translation:
    On a sorrowful Sunday
I waited for you darling with one hundred white flowers and with prayers
Chasing dreams on a sorrowful Sunday
My grief's swing has come back without you
Ever since that day, the Sundays are always sorrowful
    Tears are my drink
    Sadness is my bread
    Sorrowful Sunday
    On the last Sunday
    Honey please come to there
There'll be priest, coffin, bier and hearse cloth
Even there flowers are waiting for you, flowers and the coffin
Under the blooming trees it's my last journey
My eyes will be open to see you once more
Don't be afraid of my eyes, I will praise even if I'm dead
    The last Sunday
I tried my real best. Please correct me, if there are some mistakes.

What a haunting song! I read about it in histories of Indian cinema, and how it had moved our composers in the 1950s
And if this film was made in 1943 it speaks volumes about the extremely high levels of filmmaking, including photography and set design, Hungary had reached by then
    abszolút zseniális!

Sadly one Sunday, I waited and waited
    With flowers
in my arms, for the grief I'd created
I waited 'til dreams like my heart were all broken
The flowers were all dead and the words were unspoken
The grief that I knew was beyond all consoling
The beat of my heart was a bell that was tolling
    Saddest of Sundays
Then came the Sunday when you came to find me
They brought me to church and I left you behind me
My eyes would not see what I wanted to love me
The earth and the flowers of the lover above me*
The bell tolled for me and the wind whispered 'never'
But you I have loved and I bless you forever
    Last of all Sundays
    LYRICS: (Hungarian)
    Szomorú vasárnap száz fehér virággal
    Vártalak kedvesem templomi imával
    Álmokat kergető vasárnap délelőtt
    Bánatom hintaja nélküled visszajött
    Azóta szomorú mindig a vasárnap
Könny csak az italom kenyerem a bánat...
    Szomorú vasárnap
    Utolsó vasárnap kedvesem gyere el
Pap is lesz, koporsó, ravatal, gyászlepel

I'm thinking the real reason for mass suicides over this song is World War 2 which devastated almost every country in the entire world. Many lives were lost and many more were mourning the death of their family and friends and this song was so sad it just kinda took them over the edge.

    I have a question
Why is this song both I the original and in translation sung so often by female artists. I can't fault this very beautiful rendition, your woman the actress plays her role of the singer incredibly well and deserves the praise she has had but I think it suits a male voice better.
The ideas in the song are not exclusively male or female ideas but ,on youtube at least, it seems to have been mainly taken up by women. It's a shame the film didn't include a scene of the guy singing it so himself as he composed the lyrics.
Still before you trolls all brand me a sexist philistine I liked the film and I love the song.

      Gloomy sunday
      With a
      hundred of white flowers,
I was waiting you my love, with a church prayer,
      That dream-chasing Sunday morning,
The chariot of my sadness returned without you.
Ever since then, Sundays are always sad,
Tears are my drink, and sorrow is my bread,
      Gloomy Sunday.
Last Sunday, my love please come along,
There will even be priest, coffin, catafalque, hearse-cloth.
Even then flowers will be awaiting you, flowers and coffin.
Under blossoming trees my journey shall be the last.
My eyes will be open, so that I can see you one more time,
Don't be afraid of my eyes as I'm blessing you even in my death,
      Last Sunday.

Yes, they say it's the hardest European language to learn. Bravo and congratulations on being able to speak this beautiful language, even if it isn't at fluency level. Progress is progress, and you deserve a pat on the back for being able to speak any foreign language =) I'm jealous!
