So many older games do not have decent teach/play throughs. Kudos to you for continuing to teach/play those games that have lost their hotness.
This was nice to watch! One of our cats has some separation anxiety, and we like to think that the other cat helps him feel less lonely when we aren’t home. Then again, we are home so much now that he rarely has to feel lonely...I fear how hard it will be for him when we finally get to go on vacation!

Awesome video, guys! Love your style and am happy you went for a Q&A. I've been playing over 1000 different titles and I now feel similar to you in many regards. On the 18XX games, they're fairly similar (at least on a 1st play). I tried several of them. 1889 was the best for us, tighter map, goes faster, good replayability, but in the end you still count numbers and plan what to do when trains rust. Good strategy, but a bit too long and mechanical at about 4-5 hours.

I’m a huge Niners fan and Muse fan (saw them in England at Emirates, as my husband is a Brit), and I’m also a health care provider in SoCal but went to Cal for school. As an Asian American, glad you guys are representing with great content and showing the world how multifaceted we are and that we are just not just into books :)
We LOVE Dexter (and you folks). I didn't realize he was nine, he is so cute! Beasley is super similar, she used to get motion sickness, also territorial and a bit of a jerk to other dogs but generally nice to other humans, she might get a sibling this summer. Love all your content folks, you continue to inspire us and we're so thankful for all your wonderful videos.

I don't do KickStarter usually unless it's a new edition and/or expansion for an existing game. I figure I might as well ensure I get a copy of the game and maybe get some KickStarter exclusives. I recently backed the following games with their new expansions:
Chronicles of Crime, Cartographers, Atlantis Rising, and Grand Austria Hotel.

I've enjoyed your videos this past year & this one is no exception. I found your advice in setting limits very interesting. That is something I started doing last year, ie., I set a limit of 100 games to have in my collection at any one point in time. Also my new year's resolution this year was to reduce my backlog of unplayed games. Percentage wise, you guys are actually doing better than I am in terms of that (I peeked at your collection :) ) It's really hard to not just keep buying games but at some point I felt I had to exert some control & set limits. I also am not into the Kickstarter phenomenon whatsoever, so I have managed to avoid that aspect of the hobby, thankfully. Great job doing what you do, thank you & I look forward to more of your content this year!

Well, Naveen a 49er. Also a big football fan since my first trip to the US through a school exchange program back in 2002. We stayed in Seattle, so I became a Seahawks 12th man :-). Loved the rivalry years with Harbaugh as coach. The 2013 NFC Championship game was just legendary.

Uwe Rosenberg series! I primarily play board games with me wife, and we both also love heavy euro games. Vital Lacerda is my favorite board game designer, with On Mars being my favorite (of the ones I have played).
I'd recommend Fields of Arle by Uwe Rosenberg. Specifically designed for 2-player, but still a huge game (literally and figuratively), with a lot of table presence

Really great video! It was fun to get to know you both. Gattaca is one of my favorite movies (as a science teacher, I enjoy those with science connections). I've never been to a convention, but am pretty new to the hobby. When it is safe again, hopefully I can attend the one you mentioned in SoCal since we live near LA. Did you say it is Strategicon? Naveen, what is your favorite NFL team? Monique, have you tried Dale of Merchants since you enjoy deck building? I like a few of the twists that game takes. Happy New Year!
Yes "Strategicon", it's typically held 3 times a year. Presidents Day weekend, Memorial Day Weekend, and Labor Day Weekend. It's really exciting and we highly highly recommend going! Favorite NFL team is the 49ers, don't think Monique hads played "Dale" but I know she is curious about it.

Great video, I found all your answers interesting. I have played 1830 just a couple of times. This is one of the most straightforward 18xx but it's long! At the moment my partner and I are playing 1862 which is more complicated but more interesting and there is "short" game variants. We are only beginners at 18xx but I do like them (more than my partner). Another interesting heavy game we have played is Pax Transhumanity, I liked that one.
Funny to see that we had almost 100% overlap in our favorite comic books. Only Postal was not on there, so I'll have to check that one out.

Daytripper is so good! Fabio Moon and Gabriel Bá are twin brothers from Brazil (where I’m from!), and it was the first time I saw my hometown portrayed so beautifully in a graphic novel. The story is amazing regardless, but just added another layer to me that made it extra special! If you haven’t already, you should check it out “Blankets” by Craig Thompson (it also won a few Eisner awards!). Actually, the guy in the comic shop recommended me Daytripper after I said I love Blankets, and he didn’t even know I was from Brazil.

My wife and I will be doing a very similar thing as you two here shortly, however, we will not necessarily only be tied to reviews and playthroughs. I really want to dive into those heavily obviously, but I want to focus more on bringing awareness to the "indie/hobby market" content creators. The "little guys". Lately, I have noticed I’m gravitating more towards channels hosted by couples. Probably because my wife is my main playing partner as well.
In any case, we usually play light to medium weight games, Root, Tapestry, and Spirit Island being the heaviest of them. We like this range because they tend to hit the table more than heavier games. However, I would like to try some heavy euros and today I learned that you two like them :).
What medium to heavy or heavy euros would you recommend for us? Two caveats: we like art, it can be “abstract” or low on theme, but we prefer beautiful art/components, and it would preferably need to play good at two players for obvious reason.

Awesome Video! U guys have always been my go to channel for playthroughs and honest opinions. I think Monique is really going to enjoy a game called Dale of Merchants, it's a none conventional deck builder with cute animals, great theme, unlimited custom machenics and re-playbility.
You're the second person who recommended that game for Monique! She has mentioned wanting to play it in the past, hopefully we can get our hands on a copy. How does it play at 2 players?
@@BeforeYouPlay It plays best at 2 and 3. U pick and mix player+1 number of animal decks from a selection of 27 (assume u have everything) to setup a game experience u want (game give u idea on each decks playstyle) plus optional 55 player powers. There's very few combinations that might not work as well as the rest, but it's pretty well tested considering the 80k (27pick5) unique deck combinations. Quackalope has a great video explaining the game. The game designer also did the art as well, pretty cool.

I'd definitely be up for seeing y'all try out new games like MTG. They did a set a while ago called Jumpstart that was really good for casual games, each booster pack has a unique curated theme and they're designed so you can take any two packs and combine them to get a fully functional deck.

I would really be interested in hearing why you did not like Puerto Rico that much. Except for its production (which varies from awful to mediocre in the different versions), I think it is one of the best mid-weight euros I have ever played, full of long term strategies and tactical decisions. Did you feel that there are balance issues (factory cost, corn player advantage, sit-after-newbie advantage, etc. have been discussed numerous times), or was it something else?

Awww us too!! It's probably one of the aspects we miss the most! We typically go for the entire weekend. Friday to Monday (and we attend the auction as well because it's so entertaining!) Really looking forward to the day we can all get together again, especially at that capacity.

Barrage and Pax Emancipation is best at 3, but they do work great at 2 aswell.

Thanks for tips on teaching a game but what tips wud u give for learning a game esp those heavy strategy ones like On Mars The Gallerist Gaia Project etc. I watch how to videos but I have to watch em 2 - 3 times (time consuming) bfor feeling confident to play.. guess I'm a slow learner.. Monique is so good at teaching w her how to vids
1846 is kind of a weird one. Lot's of people suggest it as a good starter because it sits more on the Euro end of 18XX. However, it does a bunch of weird stuff that isn't common in other 18XX games (eg drafting the private companies in the beginning, half dividend payouts, emphasis on east-west route building etc). Some people make the argument that it is actually better to start with something like 1830 even though it's more ruthless because it actually does a better job in showing the more common features of 18XX. Alternatively can try one of the often recommended starter ones like 18Chesapeake.

Never got to see Prince. We enjoy music festivals when a number of different artists perform. A few years ago the two of us went to Coachella, that is probably my (Naveen's) favorite!

Actually I am Spanish and yes the name comes from Lone Wolf and Cub, a real classic. So I would like to add a Spanish author, Paco Roca, all his books are good, he is famous for Wrinkles, quite good indeed, but I would particullarly recomend La Casa, The House, it is published in English, it is a small but complex book.
If open to trying 18xx again there is a new "best" starting one called 18chesapeake that is excellent. 18xx.games has a great implementation online. Also, yes on trying MTG. I suspect you will enjoy the accessibility and depth.

Curious how you get enough plays in to review. The review podcast I'm part of has a five play minimum for a game to be considered eligible for review and working in healthcare during COVID, I struggle to get there.
Hi Ruth! Thank you for everything you do, especially during this time! The answer to that is a few things. Monique is only working part-time now, so she has two extra days during the week to work on content. As for playtesting, we have a pretty strict calendar that we set weekly in order to get everything done. We're fortunate to be live-in gaming partners so we sometimes play games until REALLY late at night, and end up leaving games setup on our table until we've played it enough. So in short, we've had to develop shortcuts to make this endeavor less time-consuming.
New Frontiers replaced Puerto Rico for me. Alas, Naveen, there is some text, but it fixes a lot of problems I had with PR, and it plays well with two :)
Please try Ashes now that it´s being reborn. It SUCH a fun game, no collecting, just get decks and start playing.

What are your full time jobs? Since the first time I've started watching your videos, I keep thinking I've met Naveen in my professional life somewhere before.
