  • How not to fix a washing machine. Although… it was fixed… ultimately.
    They said it couldn’t be done. They said it was un-filmable. They said I’d had one over the eight and should probably put my dick back in my shorts. Actually, the wife said all these things, but I still repaired the blimmin’ washing machine while she slobbed around watching Coronation Street on the telly and scoffing a whole box of Terry’s All Gold…
    … and a toffee apple.
    As someone who volunteered at a repair café in the pre-pandemic times, I’m of the opinion that it’s always good to have a crack at attempting to find why something isn’t doing the business and if it can be fixed with some simple screwdriver twiddling, pliar-pulling or general fannying around. Often, it can but never undertake anything you’re not completely comfortable with, especially with dangerous stuff like electrics. See this video then not as a ‘how-to’, but more as a ’how-I-somehow-happened-to’. It’s not right, it’s not wrong…. much…, it’s just my own repair attempt on my own machine. And this time it worked…
    …eventually.
    Pro tip: Don’t drink and DIY. The booze made my evening go smoother, the lack of it would have made this repair go quicker. Following a Saturday spent nursing a beastly hangover, I found last Sunday the actual cause of the trouble. Skip to the end if (for whatever unfathomable reason) you don’t want to see the guts of a flimmin’ washing machine and forty-odd minutes of a good-looking drunk bloke reaching the wrong conclusions.
    Anyway, take this nonsense for what it is: common things that may cause a washing machine not to drain. Yes, I know it’s dull but as I said in the video, this is for my own benefit so that when it happens again, I don’t have to re-learn what I did before.
    An actual electrical work video will be coming soon, honest. Whaddya mean you’re feeling short changed? Don’t make me turn on mid-roll ads my friends. Nobody wants that.
    Note: Around the nine-minute mark, a disconnected hose can be seen on top of the drum. This was erroneously detached in a deleted scene and doesn’t have to be removed as part of the disassembly process.

I’m not an electrician, it all started with an EE powerbank search, big clive arrived in the results then Thomas Nagy pops up on recommended then it’s Nick copex Bundy then Dses. That's a common fault on Miele, the entrance to the pressure vessel gets blocked and the machine thinks that there is still water in the machine when it's empty and eventually times out (it can also lead to the machine overfilling), poor design, get it all the time on the commercial Miele machines. I was praying from the start that you would find it, well done!

    • @millomweb
      @millomweb 4 роки тому +1

      Did he find it ? Machines I've seen have big pipes for crud to rest in before it goes down to small bore for the pressure switch.
      Oh he did :) went back and watched the ending !
      Looks like the problem is that it doesn't fully drain to lose gunge that gathers in there.

    Thank you for taking the time to film, edit and share this video. Good to see a bit of DIY on an appliance and most of us recognise the scenario of the ‘journey of discovery’ and multiple repeated assembly, tests and strip downs (rinse and repeat). I know you have your machines up on high to meet the needs of your wife, but it is actually an advantage for maintenance (as you can get a bucket under the drain). I have reached the age where if I have to get on the floor to do a job like this, before I try and get back up, I ask myself is there anything else needs doing down here before I try and get back up.😉

    I retrieved £4.57 in legal tender, two old one-pound coins, €0.30, 7 Charles Tyrwhitt collar stiffeners, a piece of wire, a small silver cross, a little brass heart and the key to the shed that's been missing for three years.
    I also did it on Saturday morning and I hadn't drunk most of a wine box during the operation. Now the missus can do the washing again and everyone's happy! (only joking, people, I do the washing as well. Well, sometimes...)

      I've a Candy. One year it sulked and refused to respond to the power button. Couldn't fix it so it got a new board and a new programme. I noticed differences in the programming from the original but the most interesting one is at least one of the rinse only programmes never ends - fill, rinses, empties and repeats infinitely.

      I thhink that's because the impeller is shunted by magnets so if you spin it by hand it will stop when it lines up with the magnets. That's how the impeller works in my fish tank pump anyway

    Fantastic video David. You gave me the courage to take on this problem in my own laundry. Same model, same issue. However my washer had developed a leak which would flood the pan and set off the flood sensor. The leak was in the plastic backflow valve (5745751 MIELE WASHER BACKFLOW NON RETURN VALVE), located on the rear panel. The leak was near where the rubber hose connected at the bottom and unbelievably caused by a rough spin cycle banging the edge with its metal frame. This caused a rupture on the part where it would leak during the water extraction. I've used silicone sealant to hopefully stop the leak and double as make-shift padding to the drum frame. Hopefully this helps others with their washer.

    • @teebee7679
      @teebee7679 2 роки тому

      @@christiannielsen3863 No, you'll have to take the top, front and left side panels off to get to the part. It's not too difficult to be honest. The top panel has spring loaded clips so don't unscrew the two side points completely. Just loosen them to release the clips, the top will pop off fine. When you get to the part, it is fastened with a screw at the rear. From there you'll be able to remove it. Be aware of the wooden float, that will likely drop out and is easy to lose. Just make sure when you are reassembling, to make sure the water inlet pipe to the drum (small pipe above the front door) is secure. It's easily bumped loose in the disassembly. You'll have water pouring everywhere otherwise!

    Hey dave love the video. I do commercial laundry repairs for a living and was praying the whole way through you'd check the pressure dome. Next time you have the m/c apart there is a hose coming off the left side of the drain pump that can cause drainage issue and also IR test the element as there fused so can go open circuit.

    That impeller on the drain motor seems to be working fine. As the motor is a permanent magnet, synchronous motor it basically "cogs" around to the next magnet. It can spin in either direction so if it gets stuck on something it can reverse direction...

      Our old Servis washer, the pump was belt driven from the main motor. Anytime the machine was running, the pump ran too. During agitation, it pumped in and during drain/spin it pumped out. Similar impeller but rubberier - and I coined the term 'button pump' as the impeller would flex so it would really pump buttons in the water !

Cleaning detritus is important in all 16 years not one day of problems. I wish I was 76 kg🤣. Having said that my USA washing machine is twice as large and 3 times as heavy. Don’t use powder in hard water areas always liquid but none of those plastic throw-in tabs. My missus tells me everyday clear your pockets. Tissues are the bane of my life. Another strangely entertaining video. We watch with an increasing feeling of schadenfreude and yet despair as we observe the descent into alcoholism and ultimate madness. Just a couple of points Dave, firstly it's not a good idea to base a diagnosis on a previous condition. Yes, it's worth bearing in mind but each problem should be considered on it's merit. So, in this case, it would have been good to have started at the drain hose end and worked back from there. A tricky one to spot though. Secondly, it is important, for the sake of your marriage, to appreciate the true value of the washing machine. It is the ultimate symbol of female emancipation, the babes know that if that magic box ain't working, they get sent straight down to the nearest river, to beat the old mans kecks clean on the nearest rock. Save the washing machine. Save the world! Keep it up Dave.

    Thank you for sharing this video. I have the same washing machine and got the same fault code. This video gave me the confidence to do the repair work myself. The issue with my Miele was most probably dirt deposits in the air hoses. Also great that you included the small mistakes in the video, it really helped me to avoid doing the same mistakes.

    Liked and subbed. Watching from Denmark, Scandinavia.
    Having a trusty Miele (W5745) ourselves with irregular drainage problems while spinning, I wonder if the solution to this could be that exact white pressure-tubing-thing you're handling at the very end. Yours look pretty gunky, so ours has to be in a state like that as well.
    And since it measures pressure in combination with the water level and the drainage, it makes perfectly sense why it works while washing, when there's a lot of water, but not while spinning, when the water pressure inside this tube is much less and with the accumulated gunk, it's no wonder why there's a problem.
    It also makes sense why drainage works, if there's a pause before trying the spinning procedure again
    ....well, well.....
    Very interesting video. I bet it has contributed to the solution of the bad habits of our 10 year old machine here, which I usually clean with a couple of dishwashertabs with the cotton 95C program and with Citric acid powder on yet another cotton 95C program.
    Other sites on the net have mentioned blowing some sort of an easy accessable tube free of gunk.....so it has to be this bad boy.
    Thanks. Great video. Very enjoyable. Cheers and bless your heart.

      Nope, I don’t think so… Actually signed into UA-cam to find your comment again which is a rarity for me. I think the problem with drainage (presuming you haven’t crushed the waste hose with the machine itself) is the ‘Non-Return/Check/Brake Valve’ (part: Miele 6044860). It is a long off-white/light-grey box that sits inside the machine, to the far left back corner behind the drum. It is connected at the bottom of the machine to the hose run between the pump outlet and to the top of the machine to the external waste connector that the external waste hose connects to (with also a drain back thing from the top of it into the filling hopper of the draw) I think this part is meant to separate suddy lint to prevent the home drains from blocking and also to prevent backflow somehow but am not too sure. It is easy enough to remove but hard to clean as it is fused together so has to be jet washed through from on end or the other. Thought of just getting a new one but at £80-£100, I shall have to clean it instead. Our one only seems to need a clean about 8 years after I last did it so not too bad really - of course it all depends on the amount of use, fluffiness of clothing etc. (we are family of 4, children are 7 & 9 now so tons of use for us).

      @@Darfyddi Thanks for taking your time to reply. It is very helpful. No, haven't crushed the hose with the machine itself, ha-ha.
      We've been a family of three (One guy and two girls until the daughter moved out) and it have lasted around 9-10 years from new, so seeing the equivalent timeframe does actually makes a lot of sense to take a look at this part. Thanks for the partnumber..
      £80-100 is an imposssibility and who doesn't have a jetwasher these days. Well I guess it's up to the clever one once again to do the repairs and refurbishments around here......

    I'm not saying my wife's rough but she managed to break the outer door off our Miele W1613. Managed to find a second hand door off eBay for £50 (new ones are £200-£250) but was then thinking how do I swap it over as on my model the bolts are on the back of the front panel, which needs the panel removing. Watched your video and read some of the comments such as you only need to remove the front lid bolts, 1 hour later new door swapped over and refitted. Even had a look on the bottom ribbed sump hose while I was at it. Wife did persuade me not to take the white pressure sensor out to de-crap as was getting occasional faults same as you, and is running a Calgon generic through it right now. Cracking video Dave, now I'm a white goods god in my wife's eyes :)

    I know this is some time on, but yes the pumps are like that from new.
    The ball in the sump hose is to prevent reverse filling via the drain hose, if it is connected to a spigot under the sink and a drain blockage backs up..
    That and in the days of soap powder, it stopped all the soap dropping straight out the bottom of the drum as the machine first started to fill.
    They started appearing in sump hoses in the late 1990s and likely to reduce soap waste for some EU reg or another.
    Not a worry with capsules that take time to dissolve.
    If your drain hose goes in to a stand pipe, do yourself a favour and leave the ball out next time.
    The slightest soap scum on them can make them stick and cause draining issues.
    I used to be an appliance engineer but wouldn't of course leave the ball out on a customers machine.

    Luckily I watched to the end of this very funny vid & hopefully found the secret to fixing my Miele in the last five mins (it's on an encouraging looking test drive), the Air Trap (the white thing that sticks into the bottom front of the drum). Like David I've had mine apart & back together countless times to repeated fails. Cleaned every bit of pipework I could find, all full of sludge but I hadn't noticed the white box with it's pipe that runs up to the control center. Like David this operation has got through lot's of wine to lift moral & give the courage to pull stuff apart. If I haven't solved the problem (but things are looking good), at least it's a very clean but useless machine.

  • @steverpcb
    @steverpcb 4 роки тому

    The machine monitors the water level via that gunked up hose from the bottom of the drum to the top of the machine, the old sensors at the top of the pipe were a round flatish thing with two level/pressure switches. Normally there is a scale trap where the pipe joins the drum, this gunks up so that the machine either does not know that the drum is full and keeps filling and flooding the kitchen, or does not know when the drum is empty and sits there pumping the empty drum for hours.
    It seems that your machine has a pressure sensor with a full range output and the machine knows the pump is running but is being told that the water level is not changing and so throws the drain fault error.

  • @ef7480
    @ef7480 2 роки тому

    I watched all of this video........................I've pissed about with washing machines in the past (and still do ). They are certainly a marvel. They all work the same with a pressure sensor for the drum so it knows it has enough water in there etc...There was common knowledge apparently that to get the 'top of the range' spin speed, the manufacturer would just remove a link on the pcb to alter the motor current through the electronics etc but charge an extra '£300' for the privilege. Also I did read somewhere that a centrifuge has a limit on how much liquid is displaced so increasing it''s RPM has no effect (some boffin messing about with a washing machine no doubt)
    Very entertaining video by the way David....

    Another very funny quality video, thoroughly enjoyed watching this! Bit of a nice change from rewires and EICRs etc. Pissed myself laughing every time the washer went into fault mode and that lovely, lovely beeper. (Except the last one, where I had true, genuine sympathy for you). Trust me pal, we have all sooooo been there! Usually with kids running round us, phone calls and other general social / family disturbances going on whilst trying to figure out where all those snapped wires should go. Got to say a lot of people swear by Miele washers but, from what I saw, I'm not overly impressed with the quality of this thing. In fact I think you were swearing by Miele that night, proper swearing!!! Just out of interest, how old is it, as that machine has got more shakes than a drunken spark the morning after.
