    This is a test of the 1.25" Cut, 200 gr BloodFlow Broadhead, by Dead X Bowhunting.
    Here is summary of my 2023 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
    Total Score: 91.71 = 10 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
    This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 17.61 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (8.875"+.6"=2.475"/2.5 x 7 = 7.93 pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.475"/2.5" x 7 = 6.93 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.25"/2 x 6 = 3.75 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 19.8 pts)
    Initial sharpness (9%, 200 grs=10/10=9 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +0 grs=10/10=9 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (9/10=1.8 pts).
    4. Penetration (20%, 15.67 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (7.5" = 7.5 pts)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    (48 layers=6.17 pts)
    Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 19.88 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9.75/10 = 4.88 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts)
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
    BloodFlow Bonus:
    +1 Extra forgiving flight
    +.5 extra thick blades (.062")
    +.25 20 degree rotation at 11"
    +1 modular design with interchangeable 1.5" blades.
    Total Bonus = +2.75
    Total Score: 91.71 = 10 Golden Arrows
    Price = $21.66/head at Dead X Bowhunting ($20/head with Discount Code: LUSKFIVE)
    Grading Scale:
    90-100 10 Golden Arrows
    85-90 9
    80-85 8
    70-80 7
    60-70 6

    I’m of the mindset that we should not be counting the tip as cutting edge. I don’t believe it would be able to slice filament like a blade.

    • @butleroutdoors2188
      @butleroutdoors2188 Рік тому +1

      I agree, at least with that style of tip. Other styles that actually create a slit should be counted, even if they aren’t necessarily razor sharp.

    • @yourmomma2995
      @yourmomma2995 Рік тому +1

      right, i think it will stretch some flesh just like your arrow shaft will do, but i dont think it will do any slicing.

    • @jeffr8454
      @jeffr8454 Рік тому

      I agree. A sharpness test along any side of the tip would have proven that. This is a puncture tip, plain and simple. Not sure why he continues to call these muzzy-type tips cut-on-impact.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  Рік тому +3

      Well, I measure the cut of any cross cut tip like that, just to be consistent.
      Like a Sevr, for example, that cross cutting tip is making a cut, just as a bleeder would...maybe not as sharp, but cutting nonetheless.
      If a 3 blade chisel tip all lines up with the cutting blades, then I do not count that, because it's already being counted in the blade cutting diameter. Should I deduct the portion of the blade cutting diameter that is taken up by such a chisel tip?
      So if a tip has more cutting edges than blades, then it is "cutting" more tissue and should be accounted for.
      I'm just trying to be consistent.

    I look for a few things. Flite obviously, cutting diameter for blood, toughness for durability. This head and it's bigger brother max out all the above for me. Massive tip and ferrule, makes for a huge hole opening that permits ease of arrow penetration with less friction, therefore I feel better chance of a pass thru, and a pass thru is part of the end game isn't it ?
    Without question, IMHO I score both these heads as A+++.
    Next up John ? Iron Will has a new wide cut single bevel with a bleeder. Looks like a freight train. Try to get a test on those after you smoke a Brownie or Grizz.
    Good luck and safe adventures, those bad boys the Grizzlies get rambunctious, Brownies too fat from eating salmon all day to chase after you unless a sow has a couple youngins. You're safer on Brownie's for sure. lol

    I am definitely liking these Broadheads,, And i'm putting some serious thought behind purchasing some for this coming season,, I would like to see a video if it's out there of someone using these broadheads out of a High speed crossbow,, ( What are your thoughts and opinion about using them and a crossbow) Considering I have several (5) and all average 405 fps(4) and 1 @ 410 fps, Bolt weight is a minimum 525 g and a maximum 575g, This weight includes A lighted nock,, 25g less without it

      @Lusk Archery Adventures Well, I do thank you for your input. I appreciate it. However, if you would be willing to send me 1 of those, I would be willing to do some small testing on it. With exception to the cinder block and the gel, I'd be willing to do the rest of the tests, spin, flight, accuracy, penetration, angle shot, and make a video of it as well, I do have several crossbows including but not limited to Mission Sub 1-XR (410 fps). and a Killer Instinct Swat X1 l405 fps). Also the Killer Instinct Fatal X (405 fps). and a Killer Instinct Furious Pro 9.5 (400 fps). Bolt weight would average between 550 and 600 grains. I would really be interested to see how it would performe out of my Mission Sub 1XR crossbow and my Swat X1 crossbow.

    Tooth or the arrow is still best for me flies the same as my field points which was a surprise no adjustments at all and the sharpening systems are super easy and they are a strong head also they penetrate through my whole block target my friend shoots kudu heads and they only go in about 8” so it is far superior also he has to adjust his as the kudu doesn’t fly like field point

    Have you have tried to include the noise of the broadhead in testing? Maybe have a microphone with a decibel meter at five yards or so?

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  Рік тому +1

      I did consider that, several times. But the challenge is having a place with consistent ambient noise...and a distance that does not confuse the sound of the shot or impact with the sound of the arrow flying by. I do not have that kind of facility.

    Do I have to have right/left helical fletching in order to get proper flight?

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  Рік тому

      It’s not imperative, especially for flight. You will maximize the rotation if your vanes are attached helically the same way your arrow naturally rotates out of the bow. When that is also in synch with the bevel angle, then that will maximize rotation upon and thru impact.
      But if your vanes are right helical and the bevel is right helical, that is plenty, regardless of the natural rotation out of the bow.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  Рік тому

      It’s because without that cut, they are their full 1.5” cutting diameter. You can either use those blades or these that are cut off, and thus have a 1.25” cutting diameter. The shorter blades give better flight & penetration; the wider blades make bigger holes.
