  • Errolson Hugh is co-founder of the Berlin-based technical apparel brand Acronym, one of the most sought after names in streetwear and fashion. At our recent Race Service Night School, Rod Chong sat down with Errolson to hear the story of Acronym and his principles of "Asymmetric Design." Following the presentation, we held a Q&A session with Errolson.
    A big thanks to McLaren Automotive for their support in the production of this special event.

    Yo Errolson is so badass that at 1:43 he had a spider 🕷 crawling near eyes and didn’t even blink once and just rubbed it off. Focused on the game! Just kept with the lecture and didn’t break his concentration- true master 🙏🙏🙏

      He didn't design techwear stuff. He even said that in this video, like "streetwear is still the best word to describe Acronym".

    Very insightful, thank you for sharing! Acronym has that brilliant approach to experimentation. Freeform creativity with tech approach.

    Thanks!, I watched every single second. Especially the part where Errolson explained why each Acronym piece is so expensive, they are designed to last 10 years so you don't have to buy multiple pieces every single season. This finally makes sense now because I never thought of it from this perspective. There are only 2 pieces left that I'm seeking and after that I'll apply the same analogy/mindset moving forward.

      Any designer/brand says their products are meant to last for years and years yet they come out with new product every year. If they really believed that they wouldn't produce a new product for you to buy because you wouldn't need it. How many "all weather, rain parka , ninja" jackets has he made? Not to mention the others he's designed for various other brands. I mean you only need one right? Have you ever seen anyone actually using Acronym gear in adverse conditions? It's not functional, it's fashion. That's ok, but it's amazing how many of his followers actually believe it.

      @@user-jj6uo4xg2i I bought Acronym specifically for decently surviving all types of weather conditions in the urban environment without worrying about what do I need to wear for the day, and it works perfectly. It’d never be functional or practical if you treated their garments as only the “expensive fashion pieces” . The idea is all about being tough and cool. And being cool alone is not a good enough reason for me to pay that much money.

    • @user-jj6uo4xg2i
      @user-jj6uo4xg2i 2 роки тому +1

      @@leoli6250 You don't need a $1200 jacket for "surviving" your day. Where would you live that the weather conditions vary that drastically and you don't have access to a weather forecast to dress appropriately ahead of time? You make my point for me. Most of the people that buy his clothes do treat it as purely fashion. They take pictures to post online and then resale them to buy the next collection. People that really need clothes for adverse conditions are wearing brands like Helly Hansen, Arcteryx, Crye Precision, not ACRNM. I've never seen someone sailing in a storm, in combat, or mountaineering etc. in ACRNM or any of the fashion based techwear brands. Pulling cellphones out of your sleeve and hanging jackets off of your back with suspenders looks cool and I guess can be described as "functional" because it does what he designed it to do but to say you need it for survival is a stretch. It's high end cosplay and that's fine. I like some of his stuff. Designs like drop crotch pants are not adding to the pants "function". It's aesthetic.

    • @leoli6250
      @leoli6250 2 роки тому

      @@user-jj6uo4xg2i Like I said being cool and being weather resistant are equally important to me, since I don’t want to look like a hardcore survival tryhard , not that it’s bad or anything, I used to be interested in that but not anymore. I won’t be sailing or mountain climbing in Acronym, I’ve got several Arcteryx garments for that. But I’m always pleased that I don’t need an umbrella with my ACRNM on when it’s raining heavily in CBD. Plus ACRNM invented its own kind of aesthetics that I considered to be cool and that’s really something which I won’t deny. My point is these two elements combined makes me want to pay that much for a jacket, taking any of the elements out of the equation and ACRNM will never be as good to me. There’re people buy this mostly for the fashion part and mainly to show it off on Instagram, I get that but I’m certainly not one of them, and I think your description does not speak for everyone who likes ACRNM. ACRNM plays its own role in urban environment and can be as functional in its own targeted conditions, this area doesn’t overlap with any of the outdoor brand, that’s what makes ACRNM irreplaceable to me.

    • @user-jj6uo4xg2i
      @user-jj6uo4xg2i 2 роки тому +1

      @@leoli6250 It overlaps heavily with outdoor brands. Thats where he got his start. He's designed for Burton and Arc'teryx and other sports/outdoor labels. The military and outdoor market is the catalyst for techwear, not urban survivalist. There are plenty of garments that would get the job done that don't cost nearly what ACRNM does. There is no "need" for most of the features on the garments and they are overbuilt. He jokes about it himself. I wouldn't say the aesthetic is all that original either as the basis for it existed already in Sports/outdoors and milspec gear. They have created some interesting patterns, but the aesthetic is more in how it's marketed than the actual look of the clothing imo. There isn't much difference between a "hardcore survival tryhard" and ACRNM/techwear enthusiast besides the aesthetic. Theres quite a bit of overlap in the mentality actually.
