      Alido kadri, in the year 1939 the germany invade Poland, your book say that is the begginer of the WWII because is Eurocentric. But, Japan invade the Manchuria in 1931 and Moussoline invade Ethiopia 1936.
      If the world was less eurocentric, they will teach the world war began in 1931 in east and in 1936 the west... But as Euro-supremacy world. You belive the war began in 1939 (cause, just in this year the war arrive in European soil).

      It is worth noting that Thailand was not lucky about being branded as a buffer state. Thailand escaped the similar fate of it's neighbor from allying itself with Austria and Russia; instead of using France and Britain against one another, which both country had a secret deal to not fight each other prior to invasion. Also, Thailand cut Cambodia and Malay into two parts; moving all of the workforce into Siam before tricking Britain and France into conquering it and accepting Thailand sovereignty. Britain and France made multiple attempt in bribing state official to rebel and accept their rule. Furthermore, France and Britain even invaded Thailand, in an attempt to provoke retaliation from Thailand, but the result is minimal, and Thailand has a huge store of cash to buyout any war reparations made by the two superpower. Buffer state is simply an "excuse" for a failed colonization of Thailand.

    It's a good video - here are my provisos.
    1. Most Europeans have never wanted to own overseas areas.
    2. Large parts of Europe never had an empire - instead they were contained in empires, e.g. the Ottoman or Austria-Hungary.
    3. At 0:05 you only show the 'Big 5' original colonisers - but you actually mention several others later. Apart from the Big 5 there were Russian, Belgian, German, Italian, Swedish and Danish empires. The Russian one is huge, and has not been freed to this day, but unlike the Western European empires people have accepted it.
    4. The USA is also relevant, even tho it's not European and in fact is an ex-colony that threw off imperial rule and opposed colonisation. It nevertheless continued to expand its own territory, and then took over territory that had previously been part of the Russian and Spanish empires. I don't know if there was any territory it ruled which was not previously colonised by a European empire.
    5. ...except Liberia. That was effectively an American colony, even tho Americans didn't rule it. Local people ruled it, then it was taken over by the former American slaves. That's still a colony!
    6. I doubt distance was a factor in the non-colonisation of Japan and Korea. The Europeans managed the East Indies, the Philippines, Indochina, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, the western side of the Americas, eventually New Guinea. I think the main problem with China, Korea and Japan is that their cultures and militaries were too advanced, which put Europeans off. Even when the British attempted Tibet at the beginning of the 20th century they were repulsed.

      Well for America, I'd argue that they were not exactly colonizers.
      They did indeed expand territory, but it was through purchasing land and conquest due to war.
      The three closest to be considered colonies were Philippines, Cuba and Liberia.
      For the Philippines, they won it from the Spanish during the Spanish Civil War and ran it Administrativily until it could be able to become independent they started to full independence process in the 1920s but wasn't finished until WW2.
      Though shortly after the Spanish American War there was a Philippine rebellion who wanted to be independent right away which was suppressed.
      For Cuba, it was the cause of the Spanish American War. Cuban independents used propaganda to get the support of Americans for their independence cause. And the mysterious sinking of the battleship Maine provided the Just cause. After the war, Cuba effectively became independent but was administered by the Americans for a good couple years before they became fully independent.
      And lastly for Liberia, it was organized by Abolitionists in the US, to return black slaves back to Africa, and they bought large swathes of land from the locals which became Liberia. And it was run by former black slaves and became its own country for emancipated slaves who wanted to return to Africa.

    • @MatthewMcVeagh
      @MatthewMcVeagh 2 роки тому +1

      @@noticedruid4985 Almost all the points you made support the idea that the USA was a coloniser.
      * The European colonisers expanded territory by purchasing land and conquest due to war, among other means. The USA doing it fits right in.
      * The USA freed the Philippines from Spanish rule, but did not originally intend to keep hold of it. It then kept its troops there and turned it into a colony of the USA rather than Spain. There was no reason why it could not have been independent right away as with other former European colonies, that just didn't suit American commercial and military interests. And yes a lot of Filipinos fought to free themselves again and were horribly suppressed.
      * Same with Cuba except there wasn't the same level of resistance to American rule. It could have been independent immediately but that didn't suit the US' economic and strategic interests.
      * With Liberia the colonisers took over territory that already had people living in it, who were then second class citizens compared to the descendants of freed American slaves. That division continues to this day.
      I should also mention Puerto Rico, Guam, and various island groups the USA took over running just like European countries.

      p and
      Yes that's true, the British helped Ethiopia because they were allies like France and Britain were. And It is common for allies to help one another. Ethiopia's Patriots' struggle was of the biggest contribution. And the very reason Italy could invade Ethiopia was because Ethiopia was banned from buying weapons by the League of Nations, instead it was allowed to be helped by Britain. You can read about it, that's for real. A weapon bought by Ethiopia with millions of dollars was banned in the sea while in transit to Ethiopia.
      Colonialization is not like that. Even though Italians have modern weapons, the people of Ethiopia didn't surrender. They chose their death than being colonized. That's why Ethiopia lost more than thausands of its citizens. But if they did surrender and started to be ruled by Italians, that would definitely be colonialization. But that's not the case, it was very difficult for Italians to rule the country. They wasted their money, time and energy and at last they lost.

Of course Italy and Great Britain has their own problems but nothing to do with Ethiopian. They might help involved in direct but they don't fight with Italians. Because all European colonisers were not happy because of there's need to colonised one anothers.

    It can be argued that there were colonies inside Europe as well, like for example the balcans, being owned by either the Austrians or the Ottomans(the last being the exception, since they came from Central Asia and ended up "colonizing" a sizable portion of Europe... and also, never being colonized by Europe at the same time, despite being very close to it...) And distance isn't a great excuse for not being colonized, since the Shogun even felt threatened by the Iberian Union in the 1600's, seeing how Catholicism could turn Japan as an Iberian puppet state, and if distance was a reason, why were Australia and New Zealand colonized at all?! Since they were much more farther from Europe than Japan!!
    Also, I thought that China, Afghanistan and Ethiopia would be included, and I would definitely discard both Liberia, since in the beginning was almost an U.S colony...

    I have a question for you, that is what does it mean colonization? Ethiopia is never colonized becouse Italian come to ethipia and weighting for 5 year in this 5 Italian never rule Ethiopian people every body was in the jungle to fighting Italian. Italian was at a time no connection with other countries in diplomacy because always they are in big chaleng with gallant ethipian. so Ethiopia is never colonized you can refer from UN.

    7:44 Trying to transclude a MediaWiki template MediaWiki-style in a video isn't the proper way to credit a file in the public domain. When you type _{{PD-Japan-film}}_ in Wikipedia or any other MW wiki, it shows correct attribution. But in a UA-cam video, it doesn't, because they don't use MediaWiki.
    You have to type "Released under the public domain"... or not. A file in the public domain is a file with zero copyright whatsoever. No attribution required.

      Yep, Turkey was ruled by the Ottoman Empire for centuries after it invaded the last vestiges of the Roman Empire, and was very much an equal in Europe for much of its existence. In the late 19th-early 20th century, its declining power earnt it the label "the sick man of Europe."

      Flavio Mongiovi Turkey doesnt see itself as a european country. Its more complicated than that. Turkey was rather occupied than colonized after WW1 (not WW2) because it lasted for only about 5 years. The country gained independence under Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923.

    whats with turkey ? turkey always had a independent policy. just because they lost territory in the balkans and in the middle east doesn't mean "turkey" was colonized. when it comes to every other nation in the middle east I get it. For example Egypt, palastine, jordan, Iraq, saudi arabia were british colonies and lebanon and syria french. But Iran and turkey were never colonized if so then i guess russia was also colonized because the french came and went for a few seconds. The ottomans themselves were an empire just like russia and in WW1 they could save their heartland trough the independence war (which is very unique) unlike germany in ww2. Half of europe was an ottoman colony though for a long time

    • @faraoofegypt
      @faraoofegypt 7 років тому

      yea indeed. its just that the term ''colonialism'' is very vage. see most historians begin seeing colonialism after the 15th century ... where indeed the europeans never conquered Turkey or afghanistan (aldo some do consider afghanistan at that point a combination of puppet tribes to either Russia or the UK). But if you look pre-15th century both modern day afghanistan and Turkey where conquered by Europeans at one point (wich some see as pre-15th century colonization). So it depends how you look at it.
