Are Romanians the Last Real Descendants of the Roman Empire in the Balkans?

  • Many historians apposite that the modern Romanians (and Moldovans) are the last remaining descendants of the Romans in the Balkan Peninsula and Eastern Europe, and today we're going to look at the origin and history of the Romanian people and their relation to other Italic-peoples in the Balkan peninsula today.
    Be sure to let me know your thoughts on Romanian and Moldovan history, and the prospects of a Romania-Moldovia unification. No offense is meant by stating that Moldova is the poorest country in Europe, I have many Moldovan/Romanian friends and they told me about the hardships they had to endure.
    Thanks for watching!

    A Romanian friend I work with took me and another guy from work to stay with some of his friends in Bucharest and then some family in Constanța. I was completely bowled over with the people and how warm-hearted and generous they were. I have travelled a lot and they were certainly some of the kindest people I ever met. I have started to learn Romanian now (am început să învăț limba română!!) and we're going back next May to visit Cluj. Can't wait. Abia aștept!
    By the way, no doubt somebody has already mentioned it but I'll do it again. The official language of Moldova is now called Romanian and it certainly is NOT written in the Cyrillic alphabet anymore. Your info on that is out of date.

      Well, I tell you. that part of Moldavia was annexed by Russian Empire in 1812. And the other part with Wallachia formed Romania. The GREAT ROMANIA was established in 1918 when Transylvania and the other part of Moldova (Today's Rep of Moldova) united with Romania. After WW2 we lost Moldova to Russians again. They deported a lot of Romanians, trying to call them "Moldovans" to be different from us, they imposed a different alphabet , and they influenced their minds. Some of them who read and learn, know that they are Romanians and are our brothers. But other half of them are indoctrinated , even if we are speaking the same language :)) . They think they are not part of this country. So yeah ..

      Laszlo, what do you mean by they "not have even the elemental Human Rights"? Do not just throw out big words. I agree Hungarians in Romania are not satisfied with their rights, but on the other hand:
      They have several political parties, one of which was part of several governments. They've actually been part of the government for approx. 16 years (out of 27 since the revolution from 1989) and for another 4 their MPs offered support in parlament to the government (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Alliance_of_Hungarians_in_Romania + a more clear table: ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniunea_Democrat%C4%83_Maghiar%C4%83_din_Rom%C3%A2nia))
      They have state funded and private schools and universities. Moreover, given the fact that some of them do not even speak Romanian is proof to the fact that they can live pretty well without even knowing the official language of the country. They are helped by the fact that all public authorities (courts of law included) are bound to provide translators. So if you are part of a historic ethnic grup you can live in Romania without even speaking the Romanian language. They are not satisfied with this, they would rather have the oficial acts concluded in their own language, ignoring the fact that not all public clerks know Hungarian and knowledge of a foreign language may not be a condition to work in public administration.
      In terms of local autonomy, all towns and villages approve their own budges and may use a rather high percentage of the taxes they collect for their own projects. So, to sum up, they have schools at all levels and of all types, they have their own budgets, they receive as much money as any other town, they are free to travel and works anywhere in Romania and in the EU. They may even complain to European Court of Human Rights. Are you aware of any decision of ECHR against Romania establishing that ethnic minorities human rights are not observed?
      If only, their leaders would had more diplomacy they could gain so much more.

      Please, give an example of a country in Europe where a political party is banned.
      State funded university for hungarians? Please give an example. Oh, you mean Bolyai in Kolozsvár (architects were Ignác Alpár, Károly Meixner, Károly Reményik). That was established following the XIXth act of 1872. october 14 codified by the royal hungarian parlamient and financed it. Where were the romanians? They appeared only when it had been renamed to a romanian doctor named Babes..Of course all the professors, officers in civil service had to attest on bigromania after 1920.. If they did not they had to leave THEIR HOMELAND. You know, in the 20's there was saying about Hungary is a land of 2m beggars.. These 2m beggars were all refugees from formerly Northern, Eastern, Southern Hungary...highly educated personals, officers, aristocrats, peasants.
      But of course it is the past blabla.. In the paradise of human rights (you think this is romania), please give me an example where a pure hungarian-controlled university or college exists.. 2017. 06. 01. Marosvásárhely (Tirgu Mures) mayor ordered to remove the street signs (with two languages: one romanian the other hungarian) placed by human rights activists. etc,etc,etc
      My question is: Szeklerland where hungarians/szeklers are about 80% among local populations should talk romanian? Even they are not romanians? Why? So in the past the Kingdom of Hungary should have forced the the romanians (moți) in Middle Transsyilvania to speak hungarian? Even they did not paid any taxes because they lived in the high mountains contrary to the hungarians who lived in the valleys..

    Romanian here. You made a mistake. Moldovans don't use the Cyrillic alphabet. They use the same Latin one. The only real difference is that they don't have the letter â. Just î. Same sound, different letters. Don't ask why, it's complicated. The only ones that still write Romanian in Cyrillic are the ones from Transnistria, a small Eastern part of Moldova. Again, don't ask why. Complicated.

      Actually, Moldova (or let's just say Bessarabia) has plenty of reasons to consider itself separate from the rest of Romania. It was administered by the Russian Empire from 1812 until 1919, when it was ceded to Romania, which lost it again first in 1940 and then in 1944.

      General Bandholtz’s daily contact with the Romanian military and diplomatic personnel for these six months gave him a unique learning experience. He made no
      secret about his conclusions. On November 11, 1919, he wrote in his Diary: “It is
      simply impossible to conceive such national depravity as those miserable “Latins” of Southeast Europe are displaying”.
      Having spent six months in Hungary, General Bandholtz [was America’s representative to the
      Inter-Allied Supreme Command’s Military Mission in Hungary at the end of World War I] was impressed by the
      Hungarians. Before his departure he concluded in his Diary:
      “Personally I came here rather inclined to condone or extenuate much of the Roumanian procedure, but their outrageous conduct in violation of all international law, decency, and humane considerations, has made me become an
      advocate of the Hungarian cause. Turning over portions of Hungary with its civilized and refined population will be like turning over Texas and California to the Mexicans. The great Powers of the Allies should hang their heads in shame for what they allowed to take place in this country after an armistice. It would be just as sensible to insist also that Switzerland, on account of her mixed French, German, and Italian population, be subdivided into three
      states, as to insist upon the illogical ethnographic subdivision and distribution of the territory and people of old Hungary. It is simply another case of the application of long-range theory as against actual conditions.
      The Hungarians certainly have many defects, at least from an American point of view, but they are so far superior to any of their neighbors that it is a crime against civilization to continue with the proposed dismemberment of this country.”🇭🇺✌🏻...

    Vive la Roumanie!
    As an adult, as soon as I heard Romanians speak, heard them sing*, laugh, be passionate in general, I felt some type of automatic affinity to Romanians. They are very latin indeed. The current world view regarding them, and many other countries or people is very inaccurate. Even when a person is informed on all things Romanian, they still follow some mainstream subconscious inaccurate view about them. They are so undervalued and underestimated and MISS-BRANDED. If I had to quickly explain to someone what they are MORE "like" I would just say Italian. Which would be better then the typical "oh, I thought more like Russian or Eastern Europe". BUT They have their complete own identity apart from Italians, maybe one day that will be know throughout the western world. From a French person. Vive la Roumanie! PS. While we were still talking, he wrote on the wall:” Te iubesc”. I asked him for translation. He smiled and said good buy. I never saw that gorgeous man again. He was gone, before I managed to translate what he wrote. 😢 But I’ve remembered that phrase through all my life.

    Moldavian language does not exist. It is only a Russian propaganda. As an Moldavian from the Romanian part that's stupid to say. Actually there is no difference the Chirilic alphabet was used before the latin one was invented in the 19th century because in the evolution by Alexandru Ioan Cuza's reform the one who realised the small union of Tara Romaneasca ( Wallachia ) and Moldova placed a series of reforms in which modernized and help place the country on its feet later to be exiled by the great powers and corrupt politicians. If you listen Moldavian or Romanian from Moldova the only difference is the accent it's like bringing together one from Texas and 1 from New Jersey or New york you'll see a differnce in the accent but it's still Romanian. Also the Chirilic alphabet is in the past Moldova is using the latin / if they speak or write in slavic they speak Russian or write russian due to being forced to do so.

    • @autnocens
      @autnocens 6 років тому +16

      Yea, but it is hard to prove the obvious. One who speaks Romanian notices immediately there's no difference between Romanian and "Moldovan" language, not even a mildly dialectal one.
      By the way, this is another infuriating topic for Hungarians and others who promote division of Romania and between Romanians, the Romanian language manifests a formidable unity regardless the region. This stems from an obvious strong and permanent relation between Romanian population groups across history which proves continuity as a single ethnic group. Of course, while some standardization comes with the modern era, the small local differences are so minor compared with other romance languages that it is clear there was no top down interference. This is not the case with French or Italian, even if those countries had a greater literacy rate and centuries of literary prowess.

      Of course I don't know the difference between english accents of northern America, but I witnessed how last pro-Romanian rally in Chisinau gathered up to 4000 people only.

    • @autnocens
      @autnocens 6 років тому +15

      Well, at least you acknowledge Americans speak English, it's a start.
      So... these aren't "pro-Romanian" rallies, there's no competition with your Russia, Rep. of Moldova is Romanian land. The only uncertainty is about how long it will take before it is reincorporated into Romanian state. A state which is not perfect, not by far, but it's the Romanian nation's state and it doesn't make sense to have two of them in the long run. Politics and economy matter but ultimately common nationhood and culture will trump, he, he, every other criteria. Even if it pisses some greatly.

    • @mishacol
      @mishacol 6 років тому +4

      I am not Romanian speaking, so I cannot impose my opinion to Moldovans how they should call their language, they can call it whatever they want. Even though I have my solid view on that.
      I also have no objection against unification, but only if there will be democratic expression of will of all ethnic minorities. The only thing which is embarassing me is that unionism is anchored on extreme rusophobia. This makes the idea unacceptable at least for a half of the population of MD.

    • @autnocens
      @autnocens 6 років тому +17

      Not at all. The language is called as it is. English is English in Australia, Canada, South Africa, United States and so on. Even in Great Britain, go figure! French is French all over the world. Spanish likewise. Of course, you can, if you want, distinguish between Australian English and Oxford English, but this doesn't change the fact you refer to the same language and that is English. Furthermore, even with languages where strong dialects are present, the language name remains the same. Inventing then imposing, as it was the case in Rep. Moldova, as a political diktat, a "new" language (in order to invent a "new" nation) has nothing to do with linguistics or free will, it's simply rape. Even more grotesque so as the language spoken in Rep. Moldova is identically the same, no dialectal differences, with the language spoken by the Romanians in other Romanian provinces. Nobody forbids someone to identify himself by his region/province or city or even neighbourhood, but this doesn't change a bit the reality, identity, common and scientific acceptance of the language he speaks. And, all in all, this discussion turns into absurdity. If you don't accept, when the sun is up in the sky, to call the day a day it's your problem.
      Minorities have the right to exist and express themselves but don't have the right to carve up the territory of the country the ethnic majority resides. Even less so after that territory was occupied by force by a foreign power who forced massive displacement of the native population and colonization with foreigners.
      There's no Russianphobia, at least not more than Romanianphobia from the Russian side. "Russian speaking" minority - here the Ukrainian ethnic minority is thrown in when it suits the Russian imperialism - exists and counts less than a third of the population and it's naturally decreasing since some of them were simply bureaucrats with no ties to the region and once the empire was gone and they got old their numbers began to dwindle. There's no half, not even a third, including the Ukrainians, based on ethnicity.
      As for how spread is the desire for political reintegration to Romania (there is going to be no union/federation in the sense of, for example, a Belgium) that's a different topic. First, let me clarify for possible "third party" readers: the territory called today Rep. of Moldova was taken by the Russian empire in 1812 from then principality of Moldova, vassal state to the Ottoman empire. It comprises, roughly, the land between the Prut and Nistru river (Dniestr in the Russian variant). Short cutting history, it reverted to the (then) kingdom of Romania [state formed starting with 1859 through unification of 2 principalities inhabited by Romanians - Moldova and Wallachia

      from [modern] Rumania ([in] 270) and the appearance of the Vlach states are separated by a millennium in which the country was the property of Slav and nomad and which is devoid of all evidence of Roman survival. Almost certainly the Vlachs came from the western Balkans."

    I'm surprised you didn't mention the Dalmatian language, another romance language in the region that was different from Romanian and died out fairly recently.

    Great video! Just a few things to add1. The official language of Moldova in the constitution of Moldova clearly states that the official language is Romanian not Moldovan2. Romanian language in Moldova is written exclusively in Latin and was introduced in 1990 after the fall of communism 3. There are regional dialects with smalll words and different accents in Romanian spoken in historical regions in Romania like Wallachia, Transylvania, Moldavia and the Country Moldova but we can understand each other more or less fluently4. Many ethnic Romanians in Moldova were deported and assimilated by the Russians when they invaded Moldova

    0:35 Why did you use the Albanians when you said "slavic speakers"?
    Albanian is not a slavic language.

      Andrei Vlad That doesnt mean you have to put Albanians as slavs.Its like putting a black woman as the queen of England.
