Part of the reason is simply that Ethiopia was Christian majority. When the Portuguese "discovered" Ethiopia, they thought that they had found the legendary Christian lands of "Prester John". So the "we need to colonize these people to save their souls" argument didn't work in Ethiopia.

One correction: the treaty of Wuchale had two versions: the one in Aramaic and one in Italian. Due to the mistranslation of a single word, the Aramaic treaty said Ethiopia COULD conduct their foreign affairs through Italy, while the Italian treaty said they MUST. Menalik II had only signed the Aramaic treaty, and so was not aware that the Italian treaty had a different meaning due to mistranslation. When the mistake was found out, Menilik II wanted to renegotiate the treaty to fix the mistranslation, but the leader of Italy, Francisco Crispi, refused to negotiate, falsely claiming that Menelik II was aware of the Italian version when signing. In 1893, when Meneli II felt his power was secure, denounced the treaty of Wuchale and refused to follow any of its requirements, due to a treaty he never actually agreed to negatively affecting his nation. The Italians, in response, declared war.
TLDR: Correction, Menelik II wasn’t actually aware of most of article 17 of the treaty of Wuchale, not ignoring it.
    Edit: Amharic, not Aramaic.

@Jonny Karr yeah, although in Lincoln's time holding that stance would've been considered "anti-slavery" as it would not allow slave owners to make the argument that blacks can't culturally mix with whites. Despite it being "anti-slavery" it really, really did not age well.

    • @idkwut4523
      @idkwut4523 3 роки тому +9

@Jonny Karr dude you took that quote out of context. It was a part of a larger quote, you're making Lincoln sound bad dude. He says "If I could save the union without freeing any slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that." This was in response to a news article criticizing his indecisive actions against slavery. However, by this point in time the emancipation proclamation was already drafted and Lincoln just needed a military victory to give it some legitimacy. He ends the letter saying " I have where stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men everywhere would be free." But dude I think this argument in its entirety is pointless because we shouldn't judge historical figures by modern standards in 19th century America someone who "probably would've freed the slaves" was honestly the best the black people at the time could've hoped for. While yes, perhaps some parts of him may not have aged well and perhaps he was racist in the end he still freed the slaves and that's what matters and I'm sure that's all that mattered to those freed slaves at the time.

I lived in Ethiopia during what was supposed to have been the school year 1989 -- 1990.
There was a military takeover in May 1990. US troops had been sent and did everything they could to keep bloodshed to a minimum. The takeover lasted four days. Then I couldn't get out of the country. Had to wait for a plane seat.
The airport was closed after the takeover, but one night shortly following I heard airplanes overhead taking the Falasha (possibly lost tribe of Israel) from Addis to Israel. I think I counted a dozen planes. Was told they were 747s and all the seats had been taken out to fit as many passengers as possible in. The Ethiopians are very resourceful. I came away with positive impressions of them. From what I've seen on social media, things are a lot better now.

Hey so this is much better and much more detailed than alot of other videos on the subject but id like to leave criticisms. Most are nitpicks, a few are actual factual errors.
    1. Shewa is pronounced closer to ‘Shahwah’. I cant judge too hard though; i can barely pronounce most ethiopian words properly, and butcher alot of others.
    2. Tewodros (Theodore ) was not from the Shewan branche; He hailed from Begemeder, the region province inwhich the former royal city of gondar was held. More specifically, he was from Qwara (Koara).
    3. The invasion was hella expensive.
    4. ‘Negus’ is pronounced more like ‘nuh-goose’.
    5. Negus does not mean ruling over all people. Negus means ‘king’. It generally applied to a governor of a major province / subkingdom of the empire. (That said it should also be noted that the term’s use in this way was dying out, and that by the late rule of Yohannes, only two of the major provinces, Shewa and Gojjam, had a negus, the rest being ruled by those with the title ‘Ras’. ‘Negus Nagast’ means king of kings.
    6. Its not that menelik did not think much of the ‘you must pass diplomacy through italy’ clause of the treaty. He literally didnt think it was valid; his version of the treaty, in his Ethiopian language Amharic made no mention of this, instead recommending Ethiopia make use of Italy, not mandating it necessary.

The dude tried to warn the world about Mussolini and Hitler, nearly no one cared until it was almost too late. After leading his people back to freedom, what did he do? Train his troops back up, sent them to Korea, and helped smash back another tyrannical force. The U.S. officers discovered that the Ethiopians were so well trained that all they needed was practice working with American-made weaponry. One reason why Ethiopia defeated Italy was that Menelik was trying to convince the Italians that Ethiopians were savages with spears while secrety he was building up an arsenal of cannons and guns. When the Italians invaded they underestimated just how strong the Ethiopians would be and being defeated by what people considered to be less than human was very damaging for Italian prestige. This is one of the reasons why Italians were the but of jokes. This victory is also why the Ethiopians started to be called Caucasians by Western nations and it's why Menelik considered him and his people to be white lol

@@theotheagendashill818 However, you have to remember that the times play a very important role in how people see each other, unfortunately. During the first Italian invasion of Ethiopia the consensus was that Blacks were sub-human. That's why when Ethiopia won the war Europeans begin to change their opinions, or rather justify why the Ethiopians won. At the time it was thought that they were not as black, that they had larger skulls, and that's what lead to the Victory. Menelik was all to happy to embrace the idea that certain Ethiopians were superior to other Sub-Sahran groups. Maybe it was because he understood that it would give himself and his Nation more prestige thus more legitimacy or maybe he truly did believe it.
My point is just that the first Italian invasion was just a different time in history. That a lot would change by the second invasion of Ethiopia as time does that.

At the end of the day it was just buisness as far as European countries were concerned. If they thought it was worth the cost Britain or France would have colonised it, but they already had far more valuable colonies and Ethiopia wasn't seen as terribly useful or valuable so not worth the trouble to capture and hold. It's not a case of if they could, just if they thought it was worth the cost. It's the same situation with most wars not just Ethiopia, Africa or Europe, winning wars is relatively easy, but it costs a lot to hold territory until it settles down and there just wasn't sufficient value in Ethiopia to be worthwhile.

The reason why there was a dissonance between Italian and Ethiopian understandings of the treaty was because it literally said a different thing in Italian compared to Amharic. The part that mentioned conducting foreign affairs through Italy in Amharic instead mentioned annexation in Italian. The Italians stupidly tried to swindle them into giving up their independence, as if they'd somehow just shrug their shoulders and say "Well, it's in the treaty".

Nice video, but you made one mistake. Menelik did not change his mind on the treaty, the treaty was actually different in Italian and Amharic. In Amharic there was no mention of Ethiopia becoming an Italian satellite, while in Italian Italy had a lot more control over Ethiopia. When Menelik found out about the difference on the treaties war broke out.
