    Regarding egg-eating snakes, they are another exception that can usually be housed together. I mean, they have no teeth, so even if they wanted to eat each other they wouldn't be able to. :P
    Occasionally they get stressed being housed with another egg-eater though, and refuse food. So certain individuals do better housed alone. It really depends on the snake :)

    Fantastic video!
    As a zookeeper I’m often trying to explain that while zoos often have multiple animals on display it’s not a good idea at home, generally zoological exhibits are much larger then terrariums, with multiple hides, basking spots and usually have experienced keepers observing the animals,
    So glad do have good quality channels to use an inspiration for my own!

    We’re so extremely social, it’s hard to understand that other animals aren’t. But if you think about cohabbing more like being forced to share a small apartment with a stranger you didn’t choose, then it’s easier to see why that would be bad for the animal.

    My friend has a red tail boa and a ball python living together, at first I was skeptical but then I saw how big the enclosure was. They cut off a corner of their house and build a wooden and plexiglass, two story tower for them. ITS HUGE. And the snakes are super sweet, they get fed nice plump rats and they often curl up on top of each other. Never any aggression. It was quite nice.
    Edit: they put the ball python in a separate feeding tank when fed, and they leave the boa in the bigger enclosure. I’ve held both of them and they are the most docile, active, and healthy snakes I’ve seen in a while. My friends mother even puts them around her shoulders while she does the dishes.

    • @jaspersreptiles7699
      @jaspersreptiles7699 5 років тому +3

      they curled up on each other probably because that was a warm spot in the cage. not because they liked each other, or were cuddling. Having other snakes with Ball Pythons has shown to cause stress almost all of the time lmao

    • @ellasinclair3015
      @ellasinclair3015 5 років тому +8

      Yes it could be a hot spot but there are multiple hotspots in the cage and they BOTH curl up there together. If the ball python was truly stressed out he would act a lot different. They both have full sheds, eat when it is offered, are are truly good mannered snakes. They have been living together since they were young and have been housed together for years.

    My neighbors got 3 ball pythons (like 6 years ago) and they did absolutely no research. They kept 3 very different sized ball pythons in the same enclosure and, Yes, they ended up eating eachother. The largest of the three, an adult female, ate a baby ball python (the smallest), not yet even 200 grams. The medium sized one died either due to stress or improper care (there was no humidity and no heat source). They rehomed the adult thank God but I just don't understand why people don't think to do research first.

    I have two corn snakes that I have housed together. They have been together all their lives but I read some thing about them not meant to be housed with each other so I separated them. One of them stopped taking food for around two months so I took it's to a reptile vet and they said its 100% fine. I moved it back with my other snake and it started eating normally, so I'm sorry I'm keeping mine together... When they feed I do place a board between them though since the owners before me let one grab the others head.

      There are ALWAYS outliers to biological norms. Always. Nothing in nature is 100%. She's not saying you must separate your snakes. They are obviously used to each other. Congrats your snakes are the 5% that can get along. But for the other 95% of snake owners, you should probably just not have them together. Will there be exceptions? Of course. It would be weird if there wasn't exceptions.

    My teacher who is also a herpetologist has two corn snakes living together. He took them in after a student couldn't care for them and was moving out of state. He tried to make them live separately but they became stressed, lethargic, and refused to eat for almost a year. He tried housing them together again and they immediately started eating and being active again. He always tells us students that we should always keep them separate unless you are breeding and not year round and that those two were a "strange exception". They never mated or showed any aggression towards each other. They just liked being together I guess.

    One of the baby corn snakes at my work ate the other it was housed with. Unfortunately, the other snake was about the same size or slightly larger. My work place is a petstore so these animals are confined in a smaller tanks than I would say is normal for multiple 5-8 week old corn snakes.
    The cornsnake had his meal burst through his stomach walling and it slowly killed him over the day. Meaning two perfectly heathy corn snake died because of their enclosure not being up to standard. I find it very sad and frustrating, I love these animals and losing them over something so easily preventable it’s just awful.

    As someone who's had leopard geckos my whole life, I've found that even when housing breeding pairs together it's better to have a male that's a bit smaller or more timid than the female. My oldest breeding pair currently (they've been together for 5-6 years now) coexist great, but I have had past experiences (specifically w/ the female of that same breeding pair, just w/ other males) that didn't work as well. The female's very dominant, although very docile so she hasn't gotten into fights w/ anything unless challenged, (so far).
    As long as you take their temperaments into strong consideration, introduce them properly, and give them enough space and food, you should be able to house more than one gecko peacefully.

    Very great as usual, love how well-informed this is on the appropriate form of reptile keeping in regards to the controversial subject when it comes to cohabbing. Unfortunately I get many people attempting to justify cohabbing to the point where I end up backing them into a corner and they literally just grasp at nothing and use excuses to continue and try to justify it. It's sad, but at the very least continuing to educate hopefully will get through to some at least.

    Would you consider doing a video on how you set up your snake rack and where you found your tubs? I ask because I feel like the tubs in your snake rack, while they are long, seem to be a bit taller than tubs you'll find in most rack systems. I like that they're a little taller because then you can actually give them enough substrate for burrowing as well as hides and enrichment (versus just putting them in an empty tub with a water dish).

      Marissa Russo I asked that on the last video and someone said it’s basically because the snakes enclosures are too small and they don’t like that. Like Emily doesn’t go over that in one of her other videos. I think it’s just any excuse to hate a popular UA-camr who isn’t going out for the shock value.

    There are many species of snakes who need to be with companions for best husbandry. However! They are NOT the most commonly kept species. King/milk snakes? Nope. Ratsnakes? Not generally safe. Ball/blood/reticulated/burmese pythons? Definitely not.
    Water snakes, garter snakes, and many types of vipers like rattle snakes, are a few specific examples who not only thrive with buddies but often fail without. There are a lot of individual species of mixed colubrid types that need to/can be housed with companions, and there are some scattered examples of pythons and boas who exhibit some social behaviors. Again though... Very few of them are kept commonly.
    I would definitely suggest to new keepers not to cohab anything off the bat, and not to start with a species that requires it (except garter snakes, specifically). Once you learn more about reptile body language and habits, and what the signs of bullying and fighting are, then it could be worth attempting. It is very fulfilling.
    One of my favorite social species of herps is collared lizards. They are adorable, stay small, and are so confident and friendly. As a beginner to keeping colonies, I highly recommend collared lizards or garter snakes due to the ease of care and manageable sizes. There is a group on facebook as well with AMAZING advanced husbandry techniques and extremely skilled keepers, biologists, zoologists, etc., for those who want the resources. It is called Advancing Herpetological Husbandry or AHH. I strongly recommend it. You can see great examples of many rare and very social species there.

    just incase anyone is doubting that you cannot house bearded dragons together, im here to tell you keep them apart! My female leatherback Lettie was housed with a bigger female and when i got her she is missing all but one toe on her back foot and all of her fingers on her front hand and its permanently bent under. she gets around fine but basically the bigger female attacked her and drug her around the cage by her arm. She is with me and in a huge enclosure with a waterfall that she likes to soak in and ive been keeping an eye on her hand and its shedding good but its just sad that that had to happen in the first place.

    Really interesting video! My friends used to cohab her 3 male Boas together. She never had an issue in the 3 years of having them. One unfortunately had to be euthanized and the other one died, it was really old. All 3 where a different size and age. I don't know much about reptiles but her Boas seemed to do just fine. All of them where eating good and friendly to humans. But she fed them in different containers and she kept them in a huge enclosure.

    I had adopted an elderly male and female leopard gecko a long long time ago that were in the same tank. Soon as I got them I got the girl a separate tank. They immediately stopped eating and only started again when I put them back together. He flirted with her often and despite being little she would just snub him and he’d just mope. No fighting. Honestly to this day I have no idea what was up with those geckos. Maybe it because they were old. The male being 8 and the female going on 10.

    my first snake was a rescue named Cyril that was co-habited by his old owner. he was maybe a year old when we got him and had been housed with two, fully grown male carpet pythons, and that went about as well as you might expect. The guy told us he came home one day and one of the adults had eaten the other, and was chasing Cyril. Since then he'd been keeping Cyril in a hatchling box because he just didn't know what to do with him.

    With quite a few snakes, it also comes down to the question of how big the enclosure is. They need enough space to roam, enough hides, enough spots for basking, enough space to avoid each other and not be forced to compete for the best spots. Then, you have snakes like king snakes that eat other snakes - of course, keeping them together is a really bad idea.

    I have an 11 year old Nicaraguan Boa Constrictor that was really problematic and extremely aggressive for the majority of her life. For many years I couldn't get her in out of her cage without her striking at me and I had always thought it was just part of being a dwarf species. I have always housed my snakes individually, but three years ago I got a crazy idea that she was agressive because she was nervous, so I put her with one of my extremely calm male boas. Within a few weeks her demeanor noticeably changed. Within a month she went from striking at me every time I walked by her cage to curling up calmly in my lap. Now she's not even the same animal she was before. She is sweet, gentle, and actively seeks attention. The only time I see her become agitated since they became room mates is when I take him out and leave her in the cage by herself. After this experience, I have thought that boas might also benefit from cohabitation. After all, it has been discovered quite recently that Cuban Boas hunt in groups, so it's quite possible that the true degree of natural socialization in snakes is misunderstood for lack of information.

    My friend housed a red-tailed boa, and two ball pythons together in a 50 gallon tank. I didn't think much of it as a kid, cause they looked to peaceful together, but after learning more about snakes I realized how bad that was. They didn't have a heat mat either, just a lamp and the snakes would shed in bits instead of one full one. They even thought the boa and the male python had breed and were expecting eggs.
