Got the X2 (Advantage line, sDrive 18d) two months ago. What a great and stylish car. Yes, when it comes to practicality (load, space, etc.) the X1 might be the better choice, for sure. I went from Munich to Croatia (4 adults, 4 mid-size bags). Was pretty fine for all of us.
If you're a young person who doesn't usually load their trunk with stuff (camping, luggage, winter gear) then I would 100% opt for the X2. It's more stylish and has a few extra premium options vs the X1. If you're anything like myself who takes road-trips to the cottage, mountains, camping etc.. I would 10000% go for the X1. I compared both side by side and the difference in space in the back-seat is huge, as well as the trunk space. The X2 definitely looks more stylish but the X1 is the more practical car. The X1 is more of a compact SUV whereas the X2 is like a modern designed wagon. Both are great cars it just depends on what you're intended uses are. For me I take a lot of road trips, for camping the roads get pretty rough, I needed something more practical than my current 340i for taking my girlfriend and I on these trips . I also hunt and fish so I needed something higher up on the ground than the 5 inches of ground clearance on my 340i. Like I said, both cars are great, for looks the X2 wins, for practicality and cargo space the X1 is a no brainer.
Checked both out at my local dealers in the UK. Ordered the X1 xline, which I found more practical and with amazing standard spec. Looks lovely in Mineral white and looking forward to delivery in Mid December.
X1 for me, it's more practical, better view to outside and looks more like a SUV, the X2 is like a jacked up rally race car BTW, this X1 had ugly halogene lights, u should have compared both with Full LED, it changes the design completely
After now driving both, get the x1. The x2 looks good but does not warrant all the space lost and small feeling cabinet. It literally feels smaller than a 3 series inside
yea man I was shocked too when I went to the dealership. I would have thought for sure the suv's get larger as you go up the rank, but it seems all the even models (X2, X4,X6) look more like crossovers vs the X1, X3, X5, X7.
I bought a 2018 x1 sDrive. It was a base version with heated sets and steering wheel plus Park Assist that stickers for 36,540 and I got it for 29,000. It's a 2018 1/2. Midway through the model year hey redesigned the base front seats and moved the badging to the rear. It looks better that way. I love my x1. No sunroof. No extra gadgets to go wrong. A much better look than the x2. Sometimes simplicity is better.
Also something that this guy didn't mention, the X2's trunk button is actually the BMW badge. At first I thought it was very cool, I do like the badges on the side rear panels too. But I think the badge being the trunk button may not be ideal over time. Dirty fingers, if you're holding keys that could scratch it, and even in the winter when the car gets a sheet of ice around it, just doesn't seem ideal. I feel like it'll definitely get scratched up over time which sucks as that's the BMW label you're paying for.
If you plan on having anybody in the back-seat just get the X1 trust me. Sat in both of them side by side and had a good laugh at how small the back-seat in the X2 is, no better than a 3 series sedan. I have the Gran Turismo hatchback 340i and I think I have just as much room in the back-seat as the X2 if not more. It's a shame they didn't put the same sporty face of the X2 on the X1, the X2 definitely looks more like my 340i but with how small it is you should might as well just get a sedan.
It was such a tough choice for me. My heart wants the X2. Looks go to the X2 all the way, I especially like the badging on the rear sides. But for practicality and overall value my brain is telling me the X1 is a no brainer. And if you're big on sleek style like I am, I highly recommend getting the m-sport package with the 19" wheels. Makes the car look so much meaner. I put the Harman Kardon audio paired with the premium package essential and m sport package, it's been a dream to drive. I'll actually find myself going for drives just cause the same way I do in the summer with my modded 340i. Obviously the X1 is nowhere near as fast, but for cruising, and over-taking other drivers, this SUV kicks some serious ass. Love the sound system too
I love the gold one so you'd probably be better getting that one with the updated features, a great video Johnny I love it, didn't know you could drive, a huge advantage 👍
In my country tax is based on engine size so the 1.4 L is only offered for both models. Would you recommend the X2 M Sport 1.4 L Turbo for a guy who is looking for a sporty compact SUV?
I go to see the X2 this past sunday at the Denver Auto show. It was smaller on the inside than I thought it would be. I expected as much room as the X1. I love the shape & style of it though but not that gold colored one. lol! I currently have an X3 and also a 540i. Love BMW! I will probably eventually trade the X3 for an X1 to downsize just a bit. I'm going to give it another year and see if anything changes. Next time one of mine needs service I will get an X2 as a loaner and see how it drives. I hope i don't fall in love. lol!
Patrick Youngblood BMW are rumoured to be bringing out a new fwd. 1 Series, just to complicate things further. If it comes to Norrth America there are also rumours of a 300 hp. M 1 Series.
I originally wanted the X1 but I did not like how the center console was laid out. The 2013 did not have 2 proper cup holders now it does. So I need up getting the X3 instead with a nice M package.
I wouldn’t all it an iPhone X, the interior layouts are literally exact, and it’s just a foundation of the X1 platform. I get what you mean, but I’m a huge Apple geek... & a BMW enthusiast. The iPhone X differs greatly from an iPhone 8 for ex.
Anthony Like most manufacturers, BMW platform manufacturer, basically their whole range off 2 platforms, fwd. (UKL) or rwd. (CLAR), with awd. (Xdrive) variations.
Anthony "The iPhone X differs greatly from an iPhone 8 for ex." Don't know Apple but was agreeing with you - as you mention wrt interiors, most BMWs have a common gene pool. i3 & i8 have unique platforms but i8 hybrid drivetrain also used in volume models.
Thanx for the info. Personally, I like the X1 even though I prefer wagons, but the X2 looks kinda stupid to me. Pointless. No space and looks worse. Why not just buy the wagon?
BMW designed the X2 hoping to attract 25-40 year olds, but like the PT Cruiser, it's selling to old geezers wanting to look hip. Young professionals don't want a miniature SUV. They'll either buy an X3 or X5 or get something sportier like an M3.
I agree with you on 99% of your content, but I just don’t love how much BMW has spread out their line in the past few years. It’s old school thinking (full admit it,) but I loved when it was “one sausage, three lengths” with the 3, 5, and 7 models. Very German with the high performance vehicle done wonderfully. As the market changes, I understand that there needs to be diversification, which explains the introduction in the to X5 however many years back. Americans love their SUVs. C’mon, that breaks up the lines of the vehicles all together! That mustard gold though, love it.
Jon Dolias BMW were going under year I was born (I am very old). Their volume has quadrupled since the era you talk about, they are calling for a further 50% increase. Because I am old, BMW remind me of glory days Detroit, full model range manufacturer, something for everyone (founder of GM called it cradle to grave marketing). Without it, they may have gone the way of Saab, Hummer, Opel, Chrysler, Volvo, Jaguar, Rover - extinct or swallowed up by foreign owners.
Your a huge fan of B.M.W., I've seen a brand-new Mini Cooper S that came out last month I'm wanting to but, cars can be a very difficult decision to buy there so beautiful but decrease in value over the years
Lol I used to live a block away from p&w. Always thought it’d be nice to be able to drop the car off for service and walk back home. But I’m more of an Audi guy 😆 Ps ‘don’t know where I’m at, don’t know where I’m going’ sums up driving in the burgh for me. Pps LETS GO PENS
Sorry but I don't like the X2...it's smaller and more expensive. In fact there is significantly more blind spots on the X2. The grill on the X2 reminds me of the grill on the Kia Stinger...most likely because one of the ex designers from BMW now works for KIA. Also BMW places a the LOGO in a weird place on the upper rear panels. I also think that the new 2020 X3 M4.O is one of the best products from BMW from a value stand point. Power and comfort plus you can add the sport diff. The X3 competition's ride is too harsh and you feel all the bumps on the surface of the road. The X2 M is overpriced for it's size and therefore not as an attractive purchase as an X3 M4.0. I'm also very neutral about the X4 and would not choose it over the X3. The X6 reminds me of the old Mazda 3 hatch that was pumped up on steroids. I had my X1 programmed with all sorts of hidden features. I hired a guy that does this with an ODBII cable, laptop and software. I have LEDs now all around and mine came with LED headlights but I added the LED amber turns. I also added the LED fogs...big difference and now the front lights all match. There's a software switch to convert to LEDs. Also I did a stage one software upgrade on the turbo and added the BMS Cold Air Intake. There's also a JB4+ computer that you can use but the software programming is more stealth and you can add more HP and TQ easily without any issues to the turbo or motor. I have over 50 HP and 60 TQ more than stock.I took the run flats off and use the 18" wheels for winter and bought a set of 19" Niche aftermarket wheels with TOYO performance tires. 245/40/19's all around. I purchased a box to cover the console opening under the center armrest from EBAY and it looks OEM. I also added Pioneer tweeters on the top corner where the HK tweeters would go. They come with Xovers. I added a Pioneer self powered sub that has it's own EQ, Phase and Xover too and you can adjust the sound and volume from a controller that is hidden in the little compartment under the dash. I use the woofers under the seats as lower mids and now the sound it very clears! I have added a lot of other cool stuff too.
My BMW dealer service associate said, if you want realiabily go and buy Lexus or Toyota or Chevy. Is that true?. I bought BMW X1. Day after the free service is over at 40K mileage dealer said there is oil leakage from the engine. Very disappointed with BMW X1. Very unreliable vehicle as per BMW service associate.

Quick and precise. Thank you.
Love my X1 great video 👌🏾
Well the X1 is a compact SUV, I really don't know what the X2 is supposed to be.
compact compact suv?
SAC. Sports activity coupe?
x2 is a raised up 1 series lol
X1 looks much better just from looks point of view on top of that it's alot more practical. This is a no brainer
I have the X2 matallic grey with black interior and I love 💘 it. I do get lots of head turns
Sorry but you did not do a proper comparison. You just fanboy the design of X2
A friend of mine got the X1. I'm sure he made the right decision, a great car, IMHO.
X1 for me, it's more practical, better view to outside and looks more like a SUV, the X2 is like a jacked up rally race car
BTW, this X1 had ugly halogene lights, u should have compared both with Full LED, it changes the design completely
Great point, either jacked up rally car or squatty X1. Beauty in the eye of the beholder 😉
The Kavalier Hot hatch.
Some1 said in a review that when they asked a BMW official about the inspiration for the X2 he said that it is inspired from the world of rally racing
Let me be true to you all x1 is like the grandpa version of the younger looking x2
X2 is the ginger inbred from the grandpa family LOLMAOROFLCOPTER !
@@Zangetzu33 Is this 2005?

whats the drive like though. I hear they both are not smooth to drive due to a terrible stiff suspension
This review was exactly what I was looking for. Someone to explain WHY they have so many X models now.
Judging from this review, it seems like x1 is a lot better car
You should have unboxed it out of a giant box.
X1
X1 looks more comfortable
you should start doing car reviews as well !!!
That jacket is awesome!
Is there a difference in horsepower between the two?
I bought a 2018 x1 sDrive. It was a base version with heated sets and steering wheel plus Park Assist that stickers for 36,540 and I got it for 29,000. It's a 2018 1/2. I'm definitely In lust with the x6 but the x2 is gorgeous! I appreciate your breaking down tbe characteristics of the X models...
Deep diving into the X2 tomorrow. Embarking on journey to replace my i3 in October when lease runs out
X1 over x2 any day
mohand prince Choice!
X1 is like baby X5. So its an X1 for me too.
Great review
X2 seems pointless. It's just a compromised hatchback. Why not just design a proper sporty hatchback?
thats basically what it is lol

But I do like the design of the gold one. Our Mercedes is up in June maybe I'll check BMW out.
I'd go for X2 in white with M sport package 🧐
The Kavalier hey we do live in the same state ,we can always meet up

We purchased the New MKZ Lincoln but I'll still go see the Volvo 😀
Do the x1 come with the new digital screen !!!
my xdrive 25i msport makes the x2 look meh. more practical too... I asked the dealer when purchasing which is the BETTER car, they said x1 no doubt.
on X2, kidney grills are upside down. Just bought the X1 2018. didn't like the X2.

Good review but next time maybe use an area not full of trash?
I thought spring wasn’t coming to Boston but it looks like Pittsburgh’s not getting it either.

X1 is a better value all the way.
This car drives so smooth. I have a few months & love it! Best Best decision ever and it was a hard one.

Well judging from all the people here, the majority prefer the X1 over the X2.
The boot, not the trunk?
I watch too many UK reviews
Shane Wright Tailgate, hatchback - what trunk?
Just struck me as a very anglophilic term to use. maybe TK has watched too many episodes of "Life on Mars"...
Shane Wright What side of the rode does he drive on?
I'm from Australia so he drives on the wrong side of the road! :-)
They should have flipped the name. X1 should have been X2 cuz it's bigger
the even number vehicles tend to be the smaller, sportier versions.
