If you can't find what I used to make the mats, have a look out for the thin plastic wall charts sold for class rooms and bedrooms, they are usually white on the back too and the same sort of plastic.

In USA one can buy a 14" wide by 30 foot long roll of white vinyl flashing for $30 at home depot or lowes.
I've seen Aleene's stick and restick glue used. total cost about $1.50 per 12x12 mat or $3 per 12x14 mat. I just bought supplies will try out soon.

I’m in America and I restick my mats all the time with a mixture of equal parts water and Aleen’s tack it over and over. (A teaspoon of each). Then I let them dry overnight. If it seems to tacky I take a linen sheet and go over it a few times to remove some of the tackiness.

I want to than you for saving me from a horrible, horrible mistake. My son bought me a 12 X 24 mat and I've wanted one for so very long. I got overly excited to use it. I stuck down the vinyl, it went down wrong, had a wrinkle in it so I tried to pull it up and it took up a little papper and all 24" of vinyl to my dismay! Not only was it the wrong tackiness ( needed low tack but got standard) but the mat would not register in my cm350. I was heart broken! So I took out my metal scrapper and spent the next 45 minutes removing the rest of the paper backing. I remembered this video from before and went straight to it! Used your cut files and 2 white paper for stickers and to my pleasant surprise the mat now works! You are my crafting hero! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Much love from Florida 🌞🥰🤗🎉

Love your channel thank you. I have an old cm machine with a ton of mats. Shouted myself to a new sdx machine and used your files to convert all my mats. Rather than cutting the shapes I converted your cut files to draw files and drew and filled in the design instead then just adhered that paper to the old cm mats, protected it with magic tape and it works brilliantly.I was a bit worried that the line size might need adjusting but it worked fine just as is. Hope this helps someone

@@createinspain I also discovered the same file will work on scanning mats. So i could convert my CX scanning mat to an SDX. Just need to add some extra card to the bottom as the cx mat is shorter.
@@crisscross104 just reading your comment - I have a CM machine. won't the latest mats from brother (bought on amazon) work for the cm machines?
@@bhamavemuru4076 The mats I have are all cm mats and I wanted to use them on my SDX machine. They do not work without the new file of symbols. The SDX does not recognise CM mats

Thank you so so much! I bought a CM mat by mistake and when I discovered the mistake, I couldn't send it back anymore. With your files, a cutter (to cut of a bit of the mat and to scrape off the black paint) and a black wates-resistant pencil, I could convert the mat into a SDX mat!
The DX mats are longer but if it works, go for it!
@@createinspain I had to attach a bit of carton the same thickness as the mat at the end so it can scan the whole mat.
I don’t know if it’s the carton or other properties of the mat, but my SDX eats the mat. It slips and slides from left to right and doesn’t stay flat :(

@@createinspain Yeah! I made it work with your tip on old mats. I glued a stencil mat on the backside and now it works fine :)

I'm still on a mission to find the plastic for scanncut sheets - but i did order a non brother mat from a place called artistix - i got the one that said double ended - to load both ends, but what i have found is it takes the mat almost right through, after looking at it i notice on the brother mat has dots at the bottom - so i cut a small strip of clear vinyl stuck it on the old mat and put dots on with a sharpie - this can then be put onto the bottom of new mat so the scanner knows it's at the end of the mat, Hope that makes sense,

Good for you! I don't use a Brother any longer but I'm sure someone will find it useful.

@@rollandelliott I prefer to be able to use what blades I want, choose my mats and generally have more control with a pro type cutter. (I've used them in the past) and most of all I wanted to be able to use SCAL (and send direct to the machine). I now use A Siser Juliet with SCAL 6. It comes with basic software or a subscription version but I use SCAL6. I'm very happy with it!

What if you were to use the high tack fabric sheets as a means to re-stick your mat? They can be scraped off at the end of their life, you get 4 in a pack, seems like it would do the trick.
I see no reason why not but this is not about making mats sticky again, this is about creating a mat from scratch and using a glue is cheaper anyway.
Thanks for sharing. 😀 I think the U.K. product for re-sticking is the Pinflair Stencil Glue. I haven’t tried it yet, I was wondering if any of the Silhouette or Cricket mats could be used? I spent a fortune in the early years buying new mats before I cottoned on . All my machines were second hand bar the Silhouette, so it didn’t matter too much . Great tips and hacks series 🥰 Xxchezzie
Yes, PinFlair in the UK is recommended. The mats have to be pretty thin and need the markings...

any aliexspress or Amazon stick mat?
I know this is an old video but I hope maybe I can get an answer to my lack of understanding. So, I have an SDX85 and before finding this, I tried to copy reg marks and put them onto a mat I got from Temu which is pretty thin but not as thin as Brothers, it did not work, to thick as it would not feed. I then came to your video. You show cutting out the reg marks on sticker vinyl and you cut it on the brother. I can't figure out how that works. If you measure markings on the mat that came with machine. From first little black circle all the way across to the other little black circle, it is 12 11/16". Brother does not cut more than 12" wide, correct?
I am tempted to split it right in half down the middle of the arrow and the one dot below it and cutting it into 2 pieces and piece it together. But not sure if that will work or not. Am I missing something? Is the registration file in fact wider than the mat is? Thank you for any and all help you can offer. I loved this video and browsing your files, you have lots of Brother files that I am anxious to watch.
Oh, I did have one more question. I noticed on the back of my original mat that their are what I call skid strips on each side. It is like scored strips in each side I guess to keep the rollers from letting it slide. Does anyone else have these and did your home made mat slide because you didn't have them?

@@createinspain So how do you print something bigger than 12x12. If you measure along the top of the DX mat from first DOT to last DOT it is 12 11/16 inches. How can you cut that when the Scan n Cut will only cut 12"? Your help is great needed and appreciated.
@@judipalumbo I had a file in there that cut the marks in half, but the other way is to put it on the mat diagonally, it will just fit :)

Hi, thanks for the video! I just ordered a SDX85 And tried to download the files that were in it the . FCM mode and when I try to open them on my iPad nothing was there. Not sure if I’m doing something wrong. Anyhow thanks for the tip, I’ll try to copy the mat when I receive it tomorrow - unless you know a quick fix for me. Have a great day!
You may have put them in a different location on your iPad...Check Files in Cloud and on the iPad itself. It will depend what directory you used. You would need to open them in Canvas as nothing else on the iPad will open them.
Hi is there any way of saving it as a pdf or jpeg? As I bought a CM mat by accident and now I cant use my machine as it came with no mats. I cant find any in the states that are reasonably in price...I have an old cricket expression but have no idea yet how to send files to it..but if I'm correct they cant read fcm files. Would be nice to use my cricut to print markings in vinyl..

What plastic do you use and where do you get it please?
Since I am in Spain, this answer may not help much, but as shown in the video, it is a 'for sale' sign, made from the same type and thickness of plastic as the Brother mats appear to be. I use the back of it which is white, facing up. Here, they sell those signs for a couple of Euros in all the Chinese shops (our version of dollar stores).

The DX mat files should work for the DX85.
I tried doing the CM mat as i have CM550DX but the markings are different than on the mat i have, my machine didn't recognize the mat, so took of the other marks so it resembled my original mat still doesn't preconizes the mat, am i doing anything wrong? anyone else have the same issue and or solved it?
I have no idea, others have used it without issue.
