Easy way to Measure and mark ceramic tile for diagonal and Diamond Pattern cuts using a template made to the exact dimensions needed so no tape measure is necessary.
Marking ceramic tiles for diagonal cuts can be challenging with a ruler or tape measure, it is difficult to get the right angle to mark the tile correctly. There are tools available to accomplish this task, but some can be complicated and time consuming. Here I offer a suggestion on how to properly measure and mark tiles to be installed on a diagonal on a floor. There is no measuring and no complicated tools, just a simple piece of plywood or stiff cardboard cut to the correct size. This method is easy and will be possible to mark almost all your tiles using this simple process. A simple template cut to the correct size will make marking tiles for cuts much quicker and easier.

Bollox!! Been tiling 15 years and never done it this way before! I normally fuck around with measurements and then just shout and scream and punch the customer for wanting stupid diamond set before I eventually make it look great. You have just saved me hours and made me money, nice one mate. Thanks 👍
Honestly, it’s better to just measure it out.
I started my first diagonal floor tile job yesterday. I was nervous but knew there’d some awesome person that’d post how to make the measurements. I used your method and it’s working perfect! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Couldn’t have retiled my bathroom if Sal didn’t make these great videos. Thank you!
I've watched a ton of your videos, and I just wanted to say your awesome. 80% of "professional tilers" would have ignored that 1/8-1/4 inch indentation and just added grout or silicone to the top part.
Great job by you and I have never, ever, seen you take the short cut method and literally cut corners. Thanks for all these videos.
TheProdieus details are what separate a goid installers from the bad.
This is true! When learning sometimes we don't know any better
Using silicone and professional tilers in same sentence. Very bold. Also are we supposed to ignore the chipped right corner? I'm sure "professional" tiler would cut it again. Like I would. And I'm not even professional.
What chipped corner? That's the edge of the tile, his line didn't go all the way to the corner.
All of my great looking diy tile project owe a decent bit of thanks to Sal. If I had a tile guy like him I wouldn’t even DIY anymore.
😊👍
Probably the most valuable information I have found for tiling on youtube. I wish I would have found this before I did 50% of my home, but better late than never!!! Thank you! so much for sharing!!!
Been struggling with cutting diagonal tile in a bathroom for a bit. This is a God-send. thank you.
The best teachers have a knack for making things look easy...very nice.
Maybe you can point me to one :-)
This is a huge help for me on my first diagonal tile job coming up this week. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with the youtube community.
So thankful I found your channel!! I'm doing this in my laundry room as we speak and I had NO idea how to cut the tiles the correct size, doing mine at an angle. Thank you so much!
You're awesome mate! You have no idea how much pain and time you saved me with this method.
I'm a diy guy and I'm laying pavers diagonally for the first time at my house in an enclosed area.
Thank you very much!
Great, sometimes a little trick can be a big help
Always appreciate you taking the time out of a very busy day to pass on your knowledge. Thank you.
Amazing Sal. you are simply amazing. real skill and talent and years of experience. I'm a young tiler/remodeler and i feel like you've raised me like I've grown up on studying your videos. I'm grateful to you. I'm about 5 jobs deep now and starting to hone my craft. now, all the details come flooding in. the questions arise about the details. i have about ten right now in this minute i wish i could talk with you about. but really grateful you are really leaving a legacy here for us to carry forward.
send me a private message, i want to add you to a closed Facebook group that you will love to be a part of. give me a few days though i am out of town.
Nice job! i love when mecanics seperate themselves from average guys. Always strive to be better! Thanx!
Sal, you are a God-send! As an amateur, it's pretty hard to figure out the "tricks of the trade". You are truly an asset to guys like me who want to do stuff their self because we won't cut corners like many "tradesman" do. Fortunately, your videos fill in the gaps and make our projects look like quality!
Thanks, glad it helped
Had to watch the video 10 times to understand how your magic tric works, thanks alot sal, got a contract coming up with 24 by 24 tiles so this video came in perfect time
Glad it helped!
Had a hell of a tile job today. I'm rusty on tile. I norm do carpet an vinyl lamo hardwood an tile. Pretty much in that order also. Thanks for the vid. Brushing up my skills.
All these little tips and tricks are very helpful. Ive started doing this also while not only tiling but even when carrying out csrpentry work such as laying floors of all types of materials. Thanks alot
He is definitely a master tile setter, Ive learnt alot from him! Thanks!
Amazing,, everything is flush,
and it leaves the exact grout lines at the field area, as well as the perimeter of the cabinet base. Thanks for a simple and neat trick. 👍
You sir, are a genius!!
Wow, thanks!
I love this guy's videos! Awesome!
you are the god father of all tile installers
I had to watch it a couple of times to understand why it works and because i am a bit slow, I still don't understand, but it doesn't matter because I am just going to do it the way you show it and it will work. great video sir. I am giving it a like.
I've been tiling for 30 years or more might have just learnt something thanks
I learn something new every day, and I am in the same boat.
Superb!! I new this trick after doing an 8 week intensive tiling course but for got it cheers for the reminder I'll save this video. More tricks like this please.
More than 820 videos to go through.
Bro. Thank God for people like you who figure it out and make it easy for idiots like me
😊👍
SIR! You are a life saver. I am a hard surface flooring installer and diagonal corner cuts are my Achilles heel. Should I say "WERE" thanks to your vid. Keep up the good work.
Mike Stern sometimes there is a simple way to do something that otherwise seems difficult. Another skill you might want to learn is how to make a pattern of a difficult cut.
This trick is so good i hope as few people as possible learn about it!
Quite the opposite, we should all know.
Simple and perfect - good job Sal. Thanks!
Best tille video EVER!!!
Thanks for watching my video.
You Rock Bro i am not a tile guy and i do know some tricks i do my own home projects. i use a different method but sometimes i get stumped, You just made such a difference WOW not only that but any one who does there own remodeling like me will know this saves time going back to get more material and $$$$$ in trial and error.
THX SAL

George Guebely Glad you found it helpful.
This is an awesome hack to cut tile installed on an angle. I like doing tiled flooring and walls in my spare time. As a perfectionist, this out does my hand-cutting of cheap vinyl tile to make a layover template. More efficient and faster=a preferred method.
While cardboard will work with this video method, a more substantial substrate will give a cleaner cut line.
Don't go cheap or small on your tile saw. Good luck, Viewers. ~DT2
Life saver! Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Damn finally a real Craftsman.
😊👍
Tiling is trigonometry. Thanks for sharing your technique!
You make it look easy! Thanks for explaining.
You the man Sal love your videos can you tell me how to do this on a 12 x 24 offset?.. you would be a lifesaver
Great video Sal, all those little angles can be a nightmare
Thanks, easy way to do a difficult task.
Nice job Sal!
The master at work
Great Video.Thank you.
Brilliant Sal I'm learning a lot from your videos you inspire me to strive to be better keep up the good work
Thanks
best contractor on you tube man...ur videos help...thnx
+clint williams Thanks
Really nice of you provide instructional videos, but have you never used a speed square for measuring diagonal corners? Old school semi retired production installer here, and while your method works, I could have three or four tiles marked and ready to cut in the time it took you to make one, and they would be perfect fits.
Sure I use a speed square all the time, this method is faster than you might think, it takes longer when doing a demonstration and explaining how it is done. If you take out all the talking, camera action, pointing etc. You are looking at 15 seconds or less to mark a tile, I think that is pretty fast. You only need to make the template once, then ig is good for the whole job.
I gotta see that again. Great cut
Yes great tip Thanks for sharing, have watched several of your vids over the last 6 months and just subscribed.
Wow Sal ,good job
Thank you kindly
You’re the man!
Very confusing, but also very impressive. Nice👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
That was impressive. You make it look so easy!
Incredible Hulk 😀 incredible Sal 😉 great job and perfect cut 👍🏼💐😊
You're a lifesaver!
Sal, that's brilliant... Best ever. Did you come up with this or did someone teach you? If I can put this tool in my bag of tricks, you just saved me a ton of work tiling 2 baths and some stairs with a tricky pattern. Thanks!
Learned it many years ago, don't remember exactly where.
brilliant. nice video straight to the point.
Recently came across your channel I love it. Subscribing
Great cut
😊👍
Outstanding use of geometry
awesome ......love these short cut jigs...amazing. thanks
Wtf!!!!
Awesome!!
Got it, thanks.
Hi dare great idea but this template have space for the tile or its direct measurement am a tiler and i cant wait to try this ☺
THX! VERY USEFULL!
Brilliant! How is it that you always seem to be releasing videos of things that I'm going to have to do soon on my projects. Once again, thanks a lot for all of your videos!
I made a similar video of this technique a couple of years ago, went into a little more detail on this one. A lot if people struggle with diagonals, this makes it much easier.
Amazing!! Thank you so much for the help!! You are awesome!
So helpful . Please keep it up. Thanks
That was awesome! I am thinking of doing my lounge myself and this just gave me the confidence to lay my tiles diagonally! Thank you.
Awesome tip. Thanks!
Thanks Sal 😉👍
Great and Easy way , Cheers sal
awesome work and great idea.
HI, good video and the template has saved me a lot of time. But now I have to cut a tile that goes through a doorway that is too narrow for me to lay a whole tile down behind it to take the measurement using the template. How do I measure the tile in this case?
When I get to those type of cuts i will either use a speed square with a small straight edge or make a patern with a piece of cardboard, or just measure it. Undercut what you can to make it as easy as possible.
Like a glove 👌
😊👍
smart idea thank you
wish i knew this when everyone wanted them on a 45. great tip thanks.
Don't worry, diagonals will be back, what goes around comes around.
Great tip, but how do you maintain the gap between its adjacent tiles. In other words is there a part of the pencil line you have cut on, bang on the line with the cutting blade, to the right or left of the cutting blade. Great job with all your vids many thanks.
leave the line on the tile, but cut right next to it.
Sal DiBlasi is the line you leave on the tile, is that the tile you use ?
yes
You've just made me more money! Haha thank you 😁 easy way to do it.
Enjoy.
Great info Sal. Can you comment on cutting the tile upside down to avoid over cutting with the round blade of the wet saw. How would you change marking the tile to avoid this? Many thanks,
Bern
Bernard Galat I will make a video of that at some point.
What about rectangle 12 by 24 tiles? How do you make the template?
Where were you ten years ago when i started> this is so simple and fantastic. Thank you!!
Right here where I have been for decades. :-)
Incredible... I want to get that good.
That is fabulous! Thanks man
I dont really understand how you are supposed to figure out what tiles to set the piece on but pretty cool
You made clear the length of the template but not the diameter. Is in 12 x 12 tiles which would be 16 inches width 12in correct ??
Width does not matter, you are only gong to use the one side, if you want, the template would be a perfect square. Often times it is a good idea to make a narrow piece for tight spots.
That’s very impressive!
Show de bola excelente trabalho
When you are butting wood floor into tile floor, is there a preferred side of the door threshold to make the transition. And do you ever just butt the two materials together or always use a piece of threshold material? What if the two materials are slightly out of plane? Thank you!
All depends on the situation, if you re using a threshold yo may have that be the width of the jamb, if the floor need to meet on the same plain, then the floor transition should be halfway under the door. if the floors are not at the same height, then a transition of some kind can be used.
Thank you for the content your nothing but the pure truth. Just so I know your a human, how many hours did you burn and patches of hair did you pullout before you got to the point you are now because you made this look effortless and I know those little cuts are capable of breaking a man. I'm asking for a friend. LOL
This was something I learned early on, always done it this way.
Very neat trick.
VERY GOOD GREAT WORK
Hope I can remember this until the next time I need it, thanks!
you only have to remember to watch the video again when it is time.
That's so true. We no longer have to remember how to do something, just how to learn it again when we need to.
Sal, came across your videos and subscribed immediately! These are some amazing tips and instructions. Question on this technique. On my diy project I’m laying 12x24 in a diagonal herring bone. Between what four points on the full tiles do I draw my lines to figure out the template length? Will I need two templates for the cuts (one in the x direction and one in the y direction)?
This tip is really only good for square tiles, not practical with a rectangle. Sorry
Sal..why do you leave the width of a grout line plus a little more on a 90 degree cut but not on a diagnol cut?
Because the template is made to cut the tile net to the wall on the diagonal, but you use another tile to mark them square, if you made a template to include the width of the grout line on the square, then you would not have to allow for it.
***** thanks mate
Like a boss!!
Genius!
Hey sal, after you transfer your pencil marks with this measuring system are you subtracting or cutting 1/8 in back from those marks for your expansion joint at the base of the cabinet? Thank you for your time
If you allow for it when you place your tile it will be all set
do you have a video that demonstrates how to layout/plan a diagonal tile floor?
Where I bought the tool
Awesome!
Thanks!
How did you know which floor tile to make your original template, the first tile line and the last tile line? Also, was there room for a spacer and do you tile up to the cabinet w/ no space?
Did you watch the video, I thought I was pretty clear on how to make the template and that the grout space was allowed for.
great video...
